Can we go back to talking about minis and painting now? Anyone know some good ways to sculpt hair? The method I've been using works alright, but I wouldn't mind learning some new things I could try.
>>
>>52047620
Whats your method bro?
>>
>>52047648

I start by rolling thin strands, which I then apply to the scalp one at a time. Once I've done that I go back with a razor and carefully add thin lines on each strand to add texture and simulate individal hairs. It takes a while, and occasionally I have to try two or three times before I get a satisfying result, but it makes decent looking hair. Still wouldn't mind being able to make better of course.
>>
>>52047701

I also haven't figured out how to so anything but loose flowing hair. Trying to figure out braids or pony tails is sadly beyond me. I'm not an artist, just an enthusiast.
>>
>>52047089
A lot better, but the carbines still bug me. I suppose trying to install actual burst cannons would be impractical, though.

>>
>>52047648

>>
>>52047701
I found a method similar to yours, but instead of individual strands use a strip of strands.

http://www.talkwargaming.com/2013/09/how-to-sculpt-hair-green-stuff.html?m=0

Dont know if its of any use to you but it helped me.

>>52047728
I think for plaits you'd need to actually make a plait out of multiple strands then fix it to the model and then add the detail.

I'll probably just leave all my models bawld tbqh

>>
>>52047829
Looks pretty good for a novice painter. The skin lacks definition though, something a wash will definitely help with. Then after the wash, if you feel confident enough, some highlights will help further the definition.

I was thinking of fluffing the carbines as being modified for a higher rate of fire and a coolant system being placed inside the grenade launcher. Would that be believable?

Working on a couple of Obliterators for an IW kill team. Never liked the available models, so I'm doing ground-up kitbashes. All legit GW parts, plus plastic stock and wire and Greenstuff, but nothing at all from the actual obliterator kit. Are people likely to sperg about that?
Related, but I have nothing for the legs right now- what would you guys recommend?
>>
>>52047925

I personally love bashes, and I would have no problem with it. Can't speak about others though.
>>
>>52047925
If people sperg about shit like that then they can go fuck themselves.

Ive always found the space marine centurions make nice bases for Oblits.
>>
>>52047925
You can't use Obliterators in kill team. No 2+ saves and I don't think Heavy Support is an approved slot.
>>
>>52047925

Oh, and to answer your question I would need to know what else you are using before I could make a recommendation for the legs.
>>
>>52047908
It's a good excuse. A slight modification to the carbine would make it more beleivable (like physically replacing the grenade launcher with something), but it's not strictly necessary.

>>52047925
I have yet to meet anyone who has sperged over good conversions/scratchbuilds.

Depends on how you want your legs. I've used LOTR trolls as the basis for some similarly sized conversions before, but that might be too organic for Oblits.
>>
>>52047925
No one should sperg about it. Use Centurions!
>>
>>52047907

Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>52047979
HoR rules allow Oblits as 'Special' and IW can take them as 'Core'
>>
>>52048043
Anytime bro
>>
>>52048066
Ah okay, HoR has different rules for unit selection. Regular GW wouldn't allow them solely due to the 2+ regardless.

>>
>>52048133
If you have a look at the Forgeworld heresy painting guide (free on google), they use their own thing called a world eater wash.

Its basically part nuln oil, part drakenhof nightshide and part lahmium medium. Paint it directly over white and it gives a nice bluish grey tint in the recesses. Ive used it loads and swear by it for white now.
>>
>>52048133
You don't wash white armour. You apply targeted recess shades. Agrax works fine with white.

The only thing I have mostly hashed out right now is the torsos, which are the armor from the IG Bullgryn kit with an ordinary chaos marine torso jammed inside and a head from the Prospero Mk. 3 marine kit. The torso and head are set low, and I'm running a bunch of wires and hoses from the back of the head to the back torso plus some green stuff to fill in the available space. I should probably MSpaint up the design as I'm picturing it so far.

Help me make a battle plan to go from here.

I'll most definitely do something about those hooked whip mechadendrites, since they're too chaos.

Not sure if I should keep the Electro-Priest arms that I have on his chest right now or not (kinda hard to see in this image).
Looks too much like a regular ol' robot without them but might be too goofy looking with them. Alternatively, maybe use small robot pincers instead of the human arms.

When I paint white over black I start with astronomican grey, wash it with nuln oil, then start working up to pure white.

Crude MSpaint of what I have done or decided on so far. I'm using a lot of bits from the kataphron kit because it's a great way to get lots of guns cheaply. I wanna mount the flamer and phosphor blaster under the arms like some kind of servo-harness/T-rex hybrid. I'd like to put sensor units on the shoulders (like the ones on Deathwatch backpacks, or the devastator sargeant) or possibly some kind of missile launcher. I have lots of ideas for the powerplants, using some admech engine bits and lots of scratchbuilt exhaust pipes. I like the idea of using the Centurion bits, but I'm afraid that might look a little too dude-in-a-suit, though I for sure don't want to go too organic either. Would it make sense to just use the leg armor with some other parts underneath?
Arm suggestions appreciated as well.

Except that tabletop is a perfect term for them

People seem to have a critical misunderstanding of what table top means, table top isnt a set amount of paint or washes, but is a term used to describe quality of the models at different distances

Tabletop means that at arms length or more, and with the same guys around the model, it looks good, but upon close inspection its quality degrades

Display and competition are the opposite wear you dont see much from a distance but it looks fantastic up close

There are a lot of things wrong with his paint job and he should have taken the critism with stride rather than whining about it, since thats the whole reason you post here
>>
>>52049595

>>
>>52049694
Why insult people? Just give constructive criticism. Its not hard, friend.

Read the sticky.
>>
>>52049694

I preface this by saying that at no point have I participated in this slapping fight, nor do I wish to be drawn in, but I am going to attempt to explain why this term may aggravate some people.

As it was explained to me when I entered the hobby there are three levels of quality. Tabletop, which is the lowest level of quality. These are meant for play, and not much else. They don't look so good generally speaking, but they are at least painted. Desktop, which is better than tabletop and has more effort put into it, but is still nothing to brag about, and finally Display quality, which are the ones you puff out your chest and show to people and enter into contests.

Whether or not this is true I do not know, but it was what I was told, and it seems that it, or something like it, is believed by at least a few other anons. Which is why they consider Tabletop to be an insult, because to them it's saying you put the minimum effort into the model so it was at least painted, and it's quality is shit.
>>
>>52049773

We've been over this last thread and it's been explained this thread.
Tabletop standard is not an insult but merely a classification. It simply means that it looks great on the table but has issues up-close. Meanwhile, competition and display standard usually looks way too buys and overdone when used on the table from a distance, since there'll be a lot more details and paint steps, causing the model details to be blurred and not "pop" as much. Both have their merits and downsides.

And like last thread: if you are not the painter of the motherfucking Wulfen then stop your ungodly amount of autistic shitposting about an issue that should be absolutely irrelevant to your personal interests. What you are doing is like defending some chick you think looks damn fine from a dude that said "Yeah, looks pretty, but not a model", which the girl herself would be fine with. Stop patronizing the dude when he even agreed with the original guy saying the Wulfen are "Nice tabletop standard" and take the fucking pole out of your ass. 80-90% of the models posted here are tabletop standard and rarely ever fit as a collection centerpiece or to be submitted for a competition, even the very good ones. Most people accept that fact and don't see it as being called shit at their hobby or as an insult to what their models look like, because it has no relation to the model looking good or bad. A good tabletop standard looks usually way better in a full unit on the table than a bunch of competition-tier models.
>>
>>52049806
>>52049865
Except it wasn't, and the guy was being a cunt to someone that had really good looking minis and were definitely above tabletop standard.

Shall we go around again?
>>

>>52049911
It comes up with several images of miniatures and threads of people that almost all agree that everything should be painted and that details and highlights should be done to the point of having every detail you can make out from a play range is painted and worked on.

Your "3 colors and was" shit is what people say is the absolute minimum that is acceptable as being "painted". He explicitly said it's a nice tabletop standard. What you're describing would more fit a "would at least play against but still looks shit" level of painting, so the absolute lowest end of the spectrum.
>>
>>52049948
That's a good idea. I was thinking of putting one on his chest but he could do with an Iron Halo for fluff. I tried taking before taking apart a broken watch but it was too modern to have proper cogs. I didn't realise they sold so many for crafts I would have added more to my army.

Tabletop painting is the average level, m8. It looks good on the table. Literally the namesake.

PRO PAINTED would be lowest of the low tier.

You're likely thinking of three-colours-and-based, which was the bare minimum for tournament painting, born from the old GW painting requirements (which also used to be in place at the stores themselves! Corporate deciding to remove that restriction was the start of the dark ages)

For the record they aren't mine. I'm just spinning a silky narative. You see the grey is the paint base, which they then add pigments to to make colored paint (yes I know this makes no sense and grey would be terrible for it. Space magic, don't argue) unfortunately when the time came for a new coat they didn't have the materials to make the paint yellow due to shortages. They started to put on the new coat anyway, but the comander couldn't stand to have his beautiful suit made such boring grey, and ordered them to discontinue the maintanence.

Looks very good, congrats on how fast you learn.
I've seen armies from "experienced painters" that looked worse than that Marine. Honestly surprised that you were able to translate the tips you got so well off the bat.

Only thing that really bothers me is the gold bits on the legs and the rough lines on the shoulder pads. The gold just kind of bites with the rest I feel and the lines are just a small nitpick I guess and nothing 3 brush strokes couldn't fix whenever you feel like doing it.

Though I pity you for never going to have the nostalgia of looking back in a few years to a god-awful first paintjob that the world would be better off if it was burned that serves as a reminder of how bad it was at the start.

Anyone have any tips for building/cleaning minis faster? It took me about 2 weeks to finish building Start Collecting Dark eldar doing a bit a day.

I have been scraping moldlines with back of hobby knife and filing using a multi sided sandpaper thingy made for plastics.

I started doing the minis in stages after doing them one at a time was taking even longer.

Legs, then body then arms then head etc.

Any other tips for speeding things up? I have a bunch of older fantasy stuff unprimed that needs to be cleaned as I was a kid who didn't even care about that shit and just wanted to game. Now picking them back up years later it kills me.
>>
>>52052819
I dont think the wash took dark enough in the recesses. Its very neat, but i feel like it could benefit from more contrast. So either a second coat of wash, or a heavier first coat, in my opinion, would up the contrast and look better

Also, for your Bolter question: I just use Mephiston Red, give it a good Agrax Earthshade wash, re-do the flat surfaces with Mephiston Red again, then highlight with Khorne Red and do a final high-highlight using Evil Sunz Scarlet.

Works for pretty much every kind of red surface, is quick to do and looks good.

Just angle the sharp edge of he knife and forget the sandpaper

If you want to do it fast then just cut off the spreq marks instead of sanding really carefully, on most areas its basically impossible to tell, only really need sand paper on raised flat surfaces that are obvious like the top of space marine jump packs

The red looks just a little bit too thick, though can't do much against that now, and might need a little more dominant highlighting.

Other than that (and maybe tidying up the white on the boltgun a bit since it looks a little sloppy), I'd say you're good to go.

I'm not the dude I replied to, I've personally only put two models together I just feel like I was going slow as well and was wondering if anyone had any getneral tips about putting models together for the very fist time. Since I'm an idiot when it comes to this kind of stuff I'm sure there will be a lot of stuff that I look back on with regret once I start paining so I'm trying to minimise that. For instance I saw that people are leaving the arms off before paining which seems like a good idea.

That and the edges don't really look sharp.

White is always a bit fiddly and you probably shouldn't use plain white for large areas in the future and stick to off-white, highlighted by pure white (I like Palid Wych Flesh with a White Scar highlight, personally. Pic related).
Using pure white quickly looks very chalky and thick, even if applied in several almost fully liquid layers.
My guys are far from perfect and the white still looks too uneven and thick for my tastes, and I had to use 2 coats of Rakarth Flesh as a base and 3-4 coats of Palid Wych to even get things covered.

Just a moderate amount of good old Agrax Earthshade.

Duncan may have not paid it much attention lately but it's still up there in the pantheon of "Paints that ALWAYS pull off miracles".

>>52054013
Thanks. Had to learn it the hard way myself. You don't want to take a closer look at the right Dominus, who I used for figuring things out. His cloak is so thick in some places that I literally managed to from a few folds on his back when holding him while painting, which ironically makes it look like it's a winter cloak.

not the guy you responded to, but the yellow is looking smooth, and the highlights are good, if a little subtle.

Shade the nooks and crannies with something darker to make some contrast. Nuln Oil/Agrax Earthshade if you want dark/gritty, or Casandora Yellow if you want to keep the colors in.
>>

Also, makes me want to eat lemons, which absolutley is a positive thing.
Only C&C is some of the previously mentioned minor things (trims, white, gold leg bits) but I probably wouldn't even bother going to such lengths if it were my own model. Looks perfectly good as it is.

Now to your next challenge of making a good base.

Agrax is brown, cant ruin much with it on yellow if you're careful.

I'd give a small bit of it a try for just the most obvious recesses, just to pronounce the shadows a bit more.
>>
>>52054198
this is something you cannot fix without matt varnish

your model is begging for some more shade dude, it looks like you barely applied any

also stay away from light metals as much as possible on light models as they just end up looking either blended in or gross, your next models shoudl have all his hosing and rubber undersuit as black.
>>
>>52054231
>all his hosing and rubber undersuit as black.

>>
>>52054262
The problem with Reikland is that it's not really made as a shade color and more for giving things a reddish tone and make them more vibrant. Agrax is normally its "dark equivalent" for actually getting some shadows on things and not just a slightly darkened tone, at least that"s what I got from my times using both of them, especially on Gold/Copper.

I'm just being honest and don't feel like unnecessarily being nitpicky about someone's first model. It's obviously far from perfect and has some minor issues, but it's a perfectly fine first step and none of its problems are bad enough to need dire fixing for what is ultimately going to be a single dude out of dozens. If it were a Captain or anything of the like then yeah, it'd need things cleaned up and fixed, but it's absolutely fine for a normal Marine.

>table top isnt a set amount of paint or washes

Yes it is, its the set amount of effort required to be put in to allow your army to participate in most if not all major events.

Thats why its known and has been known for a long time as TABLETOP standard, as its the standard effort of paint job you need to attend events that arent your local FLGS.

The term is over a decade old, and is a carry over rule from when GW still ran tourneys. It is still used in major events like the ITC even to this day.

Thats objective fact, anyone whos ever been to an old GW grand tourney knows it.

When anon ran off at the mouth about tabletop standard he was wrong. Google is your friend.

Not him, but what your describing here is not "table top standard" its "tournament standard" which is a completely different league. The first is exactly as >>52049595 described

>Tabletop means that at arms length or more, and with the same guys around the model, it looks good, but upon close inspection its quality degrades

And the latter is what a bunch of fat neckbeards that plays cheese lists use to get by with 3 color minimum.
