>table top isnt a set amount of paint or washes

Yes it is, its the set amount of effort required to be put in to allow your army to participate in most if not all major events.

Thats why its known and has been known for a long time as TABLETOP standard, as its the standard effort of paint job you need to attend events that arent your local FLGS.

The term is over a decade old, and is a carry over rule from when GW still ran tourneys. It is still used in major events like the ITC even to this day.

Thats objective fact, anyone whos ever been to an old GW grand tourney knows it.

When anon ran off at the mouth about tabletop standard he was wrong. Google is your friend.

I've played for now 15 years, attendedlots of tourneys and never used TTS to describe something with 3 colors. That's always been the painting MINIMUM to attend, whereas TTS describes a decently painted army, which looks good on a table. An army with the 3 color minimum doesnt.

I live in a cold climate too. Here's a trick.

>fill sink with hot water (not boiling)
>place can upright in sink with heavy object on top to stop it floating around
>wait 3-5 minutes
>go outside and prime
>repeat when the can cools, and don't forget to shake the shit out of it.

I have an airbrush, and have tried almost every airbrush primer out there. Nothing bonds with plastic as good as the GW chaos black. That's why I still use it.

i use a badger krome (https://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-RK-1-Additional-Regulator/dp/B0078MEXX8) airbrush with that same exact compressor in that picture

the compressor is not the best, but the airbrush is 10x more important that the compressor, and i honestly do not notice any real difference between this and a high end compressor except it is hard to run the cheap compressor at higher pressure and get steady flow, but being that you will be airbrushing models you do not wan to go above 20 psi anyways wich it is pretty good at supply consistently.

What's a good colour to put between my black prime layer and a top pink layer to keep the pink reasonably bright without 50,000 layers.

>>
>>52059350
You were told not to do that shit faggot.
>>
>>52059468
mephiston red is a good choice since it covers really good.

consider priming in white though, will save you a headache for lighter colors
>>
>>52059511
Don't have a white primer since I can only brush my primer since I live somewhere where it's too cold to prime outside just now and I don't have space for an airbrush area.

I'll try Mephiston. Hopefully the red under the slightly transparent pink might make it look better.

just use your brush with vallejo grey primer

if you cant airbrush then apply the mephiston and then the pink

Vallejo Light Grey or Ghost Grey MIGHT be light enough, but you might need to do like a 1:1 white to Light Grey ratio depending on how dark it actually is when it dries. I know the GW paint that is recommended is Ulthuan Grey if that helps give an idea of how light you want.

I know the grey primer dries pretty light, so light grey by itself might be alright.

TTS is not the same as tournament standard, or minimum standard. The difference is what many have already pointed out, one hand is an army that looks respectable at arms length. The other is what fat neckbeards use as a poor excuse of a paintjob to play army´o the month every chance they get on your local tournament events (I'm talking 3 colors minimum).

any ideas on what kind of metallic base paint to use to get this sort of mottled look?

I'm familiar with painting candies, what I'm specifically looking for is how to best get the sparkle effect with the silver metal base.
>>
>>52061475
First off, you should thin your paints, now it looks all clumpy and detail is lost. Youd also want to concider getting a highlight color for each basecoat color you have. As for color choices, black and white looks very dull without some other color to compliment them.
>>
>>52059141
If it makes you feel better, i just used your mini because of the pose. I think it looks fine
>>
>>52061199
Thanks, though not quite sure how I would do a soot effect. Streak black? This is a new kind of weathering for me, haven't done fliers.
>>52060396
Ooh, this is pretty nifty. I could certainly give it a shit on the lower portion alongside the soot effect
>>
>>52061501
Sparkle will be hard, my best advice would be to simply put metalic on a old toothbrush and flick it on the model to create those sparkles
>>
>>52061475
thin your paints, baka desu
>>
>>52061532
Oh, not a bad idea. Would the paint need to be very thin, to avoid it making bumps?
>>
>>52061502
...are highlights really that bad that they aren't visible?
Fuck.

And I swear to god the phone camera makes it look much more like I needed thin the paints than irl(though I must admit, it is a bit too thick in some places).
>>
>>52061501
Looks more like they used a Metal Flake, and then sealed it in with a clear rather than a strait up paint.
Though I imagine metallic auto-motive paints have substantially larger flakes, so those may have a similar effect.

Inspire is a brand that I know has both flakes (applied with a flake attachment to the airbrush, called Inspire Flakes) and coarser metallic paints in their Inspire Sparkle Pearl line.
>>
>>52061551
not really showing though, and if youre speaking of the white parts i wouldnt really blame the camera, i would go for an off white color for the basecoat, and pure white for the highlights. Trousers seem to lack highlights too, my advice would be to get atleast 2 highlight colors for the leathery parts, one to pronounce the bigger areas and one to highlight the edges/greases.
>>
>>52061501
Hot rod paint jobs like that actually use some p big metal flakes to get that effect, like 1-2mm across. I'm not sure if there's a mini paint brand that has noticeably larger flakes than others, but you might want to find one, or even see about adding some larger flakes to you paint.
>>
>>52061551
also, take a look at Duncan´s painting tutorial videos on youtube, theres a fuckload of them and are really good.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEaPE4sLDA7s-26V0v6SepDFiznb3y6hx
>>
>>52061607
Right, hmm, I'm not looking for flakes THAT big, but big enough that you could see an interesting texture on a miniature.

So I guess trying to find the shittiest metallics I can?
>>
>>52061475
Paint your thins.
Layer your colours (especially if you have a high contrast between basecoat and final coat).
Use highlights for definition.
Try to avoid using black for large areas of your model (for now).

Hey guys. just finished my first model. Can I get some C&C? I know its nice table top standard, but I'm here to improve! :)
>>
>>52059409

I say there is a huge difference in quality as well. Yes, the relatively good compressor costs a good 4 times as much as a cheap one, but Ill say this as someone who has spend the last 8 years with an airbrush;
- The compressor without a tank is faster worn out.
- The cheaper compressors break more easily, its a bad quality to start with, and it usually shows.
- It sounds WAY more than a oil driven compressor. Im talking, try listening to your refrigerator (this is the sound of a good compressor, which only sounds like this at the time it fills up the tank), compared to fairly noticeable "Brrrrrrr.... Brrrrrrr..... Brrrrrr" at every press of your airbrush.

So yes, having gone thorough 2 cheep compressors during my time with an airbrush, and now having a oil driven, still on the cheap end (as far as "real" airbrush compressors go) airbrush, Id say get a better one. It will save you both time and money, and its an investment that you will be glad you got over the course of time.
>>
>>52061545
Wouldnt thin too muh, just thin enough so it would not clump

Would also reccomend using an enamel metal for this kind of effect, much better coverage
>>
>>52061671
Problem with "shittiest" is that it might also be shit at applying smooth. While looking up Inspire like >>52061574 mentioned, I did find this: http://usa.specialistpaints.com/collections/specialist-paints-metal-flake and that might be what you're looking for.

Any tips on cleaning up when glue runs from a model's joints and leaves shiny patches on the surface of the mini? I'm a retard who's new at this and I don't want to start painting my dudes in case they retain this awkward sheen through the paint and reveal my shame forever.

Tips on avoiding this (i.e. using less fucking glue) would also be appreciated.
>>
>>52061762
0/10 did not prime and basecoat your nails.
>>
>>52061819
You put primer on after gluing that covers it, also use less glue, not even a drop just enough to wet the surface after you put them together.
>>
>>52061762
next time i'd go with a black basecoat for the nails, with a balthazar gold first layer, then layer it with some nice geheena and go for some sweet french tip highlights with auric armor. nice first try tho

How are army painter brushes? Looking to upgrade from my GW brushes since they just split at the end and hairs jar out from the side no matter how much paint I have on the brush.

Thinking of getting this set plus another which has another smaller dry brush and a larger normal brush and a tiny detail brush.
>>
>>52062084
In my experience they are worse quality than gw brushes. Don't buy them as an upgrade they are bargain basement.
>>
>>52061762

>those knuckle hairs

>>
>>52062084
Sounds like you have paint stuck near the ferrule. Have you tried cleaning the brushes? I use "The Masters Brush Cleaner" every couple of days on my brushes and it keeps them in really good order.

As for Army Painter, they're about the same level as GW brushes in my experience. They're going to have the same problem as your other brushes though if you're getting paint near the base of the brush on a regular basis.

i airbrush at -45 degres dark brown into all the recesses, i then coated it in cadian, then on the very top i used a lighter cadian fleshtone

after dry i put fleshade into the cracks, especially the eyes and mouth and line highlight the side of the skull, tops of the eyebrows, nose, and tops of cheeks with ushbati bone.

doesnt take long, overall the mini is done in an hour.

What colour are you using for the highlights on the red? Assuming the red is Mephiston.

You need more practice on getting crisp highlights, and a second highlight towards corners and the tops of surfaces would be good.

Eagle would benefit a fair bit from a careful edge highlight of silver.

>>
>>52066855
Nope. Unpainted basing material looks like real sand / grit at our scale, but its purpose is to look like real dirt at 28mm scale, next to a painted miniature. As is it looks out of place and really jarring, as unpainted surfaces do next to painted ones.

By painting it you paint in shadows and highlights that play into the scale so that the entire miniature is lying to people's eyes that it's lit like a 7-foot tall dude riding a giant wolf.

I also think your grit is too large to be used across the entire base like that, soft sand with maybe 30% of that grit mixed in would look much more like dirt with rocks in and less like a gravel path.

Finally got these guys as done as they're going to get before I prime 'em. The heads and pauldrons are all going on separate since they're going to a be a different color than the rest of the armor (black as opposed to red). Lighting claws will also stay off since I can just easily to those separately as well. Any opinions on the poses? It took me a lot of work to get something I'm semi-okay with. This kit isn't too flexible sadly.

Also, I'm happy to announce the official return of Chainsword Musashi, my old (and new) Chapter Champion. He's been a long time gone, but I'm happy to have him back.

try using a glaze instead of a yellow paint, GW Bloodletter might be a good option for Salamanders as it goes well with the Fiery theme. put a little dot in the lens and let it flow around the area and pool slightly, it helps to use a fine tip brush for this.

From what i can see it may be possible to mix a bit of paint and silver glitter and try to stipple it on, you could also try getting a cheap car pray gun from your local Harbor Freight or equivalent and mixing up a little custom batch of paint, might be expensive but worth it. if that is the color you are looking for then try Tamiya X-13 Mettalic Blue and a bit of hot rod glitter.

IF noob from past few days starting on marines 2 and 3 here. I think I am going to try with a base coat of averland sunset before I put on some yriel yellow.

What is the best way to layer on the yriel? Do you cover completely? I'll post a pic after I get the basecoat down.

>Looking to upgrade from my GW brushes since they just split at the end and hairs jar out from the side no matter how much paint I have on the brush.

It doesn't really matter if you don't take care of your brushes. I have used all sorts of brushes during my years, and if your not a pro painter, it matters not what brand you get. As long as you clean your brush gently with soap and water after each session, and stiff them up in a good shape (usually with saliva) when you put it in your jar, its all good. Armypainter has an ok standard, but I like the shape and sizes of GW´s latest series. The quality is roughly the same, that being said, they will hold for years on end if you take care of them.
>>
>>52062427

Base
Wash
Re-base (gently take your time with EACH straw, careful not to paint over to deep in the recess)
highlights x3 (at the minimum, brighter at the end)
Edge highlights

There you go. Its all about taking your time with the miniature.

I like mine.

It's just brught blues with a 'Ardcoat layer, then some Viva White Crackle Paint on it and once it's dried drybrushed with blue and 2 different dhades of grey.

The base doesn't make much sense, since anything big would just fall through the ice, but when does this stuff ever make sense anyway?

>It's for beastclaw if that matters at all

Painted bases will look out of place next to your unpainted FOTM.

DESU you might as well choose the bases off how you do your Stonehorns and Thundertusks, as I imagine you're light on other units.

If you've painted / will paint the models mostly brown, go with the ice sheets. If you paint the majority of them with white / icy fur, go for dark brown with snowy accents.

>>52069594

I just convinced my brother to stop pussyfooting around and get into the hobby and he'll pick up a SC! Necrons box soon.
How hard is assembling and painting a Triarch Stalker for a complete beginner whose last experience in modeling were Revell tanks and airplanes 10 years ago? Will he be alright and how many sub-assemblies are a good idea?

Playing AdMech myself and won't be able to help him assemble it due to living 2 hours apart.
>>
>>52069231
The recommended wisdom is usually before, so the spray doesn't lift any loose flock and stick it to your mini.
>>
>>52069832
undercoat rust brown
spray with hairspray (2 coats allow to dry)
undercoat with finish color (red)
with hot water and a toothbrush or scouring pad, rub red paint away exposing rust, as if the paint had chipped away.
add weathering powders to blend. (not yet shown)

saves alot of time, especially if you are doing alot of robots.

>>52070028
Uh, thanks.

>>
>>52070046
Ah, I get it

Wouldn't you have to be really careful with the model until you're ready to seal it?
>>
>>52070381
nope, it takes hot water to activate it. and even if it does get scratched more, its just more rust underneath. the randomness is what gives it realism.
>>
>>52069867
I would wash after, as well make sure to only apply it in the recesses. If you want also try to water it down and use very little on the brush as to not have it overflow onto the flat areas like on the shoulders as yellow can very quickly be darkened.
