Last time on Song of Swords:
They forgot to edition it, the fools.
New characters for the tournament.
Reminiscing about killing Sulla and dooming the world
Arguments about Strength, which are so 2013

The KS link & Opaque's website
https://www.kickstarter.com/project
http://www.songofswords.net/

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. Kickstarter is happening NOW we are kicking ass baby!

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements. It's NOT what's currently on Opaque's website, because Jimmy is Jimmy.

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:

We also have a Discord now, at https://discord.gg/zzTq7Xw
And a Rediit: https://www.reddit.com/r/SongofSwor

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/
If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread. We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room.

Fair warning in four hours I will be dropping my Vis. Noble (NOT +) for the GM tier because I like printed goodies and I gave myself a week to think of something interesting enough to be satisfactory and have not been able to.

If you want a Vis. Noble and want it badly keep those fingers on the trigger, four hours.

I made the sheet for my Ballad Tournament character with latex. But I think, for actually designing a nice and usable sheet using scribus might be better. Easier to do fancy stuff, and can make fillable and calculated fields. I've started to make a (ugly) one. But it's far from usable.

Anyways, this is the latex sheet. Ugly AF. but whatevs. It served its purpose back then I guess.

>Armor pretty much much is impossible to cut through with a sword. It takes like six bonus successes to damage someone in plate with a longsword cut if both have average stats.

Notice how you went straight to the second most powerful armor to make this claim, and it's still wrong. It's far from impossible to get 7 BS on a swing, and you only need 5 BS because you have power attack, which is easily doable especially if you steal initiative and have about CP 15. With that average CP your ability to cut through armor is limited by the target's ability to defend himself, not by the inherent property of swords not being able to cut metal armor.

Longswords shouldn't be able to cut through lamellar or brigandine, but those are only AVC 5, they only need 4 BS with a longsword, or 2 BS with a power attack, real easy.

You can stick a custom tight grip on any sword so go and drop those BS by another 1. But most swords are only +1c so it evens out back to the BS above

How do unarmed attacks work with TZMs for this tournament? In the real world it is certainly easier to kick a guy in the shin or groin than it is to kick him in the jaw.
>>
I have some questions if anyone feels like answering.

What's a good, introductory scenario for a new party of 3-4 people? I always liked Jimmy's little impromptu 'games' run in the thread, like the Zell dude taking the Ruvian to Mudakhistan or whatever the fuck it was.

How does combat 'run' when it's more than just a 1v1? It seems like there'd be a lot of book-keeping if you're running encounters for 3 people at the same time.
>>
>>52057135
For a good introductory story, the classic Algenburg campaign is a good one. Players wander into a spooky town, get hired to find out what the spooking is, fight cultists and whatever you want the big secret to be. There's more lore details on the wiki and a good game someone ran somewhere in the archives. Just search for Algenburg.

As for combat, ignore the book rules. Use the Combat Update which is probably in the LaTeX document in the OP. The gist is, a round is three phases. Everyone with ADR 7+ acts in all three, everyone with 4+ acts in the second two, and everyone with 3 or less only acts in the last one. Everyone declares their intention in reverse order of ADR, that is lowest to highest, and then resolves it highest to lowest. If two or more people meet for melee, all of the fights are resolved at the end of the phase with their participants.

>>52054542
They should have started preparing for this ages ago when it became apparent that they'd definitely need more stretch goals. I mean, they asked for suggestions quite a while ago now. I can only assume that they need more concrete price estimates on the stuff they want to do before they can announce it with numbers attached, and somewhere along the line with potential producers there's been a hold-up.
>>
>>52060101
Would be nice if Bones were to at least pop by and drop us a short list.

>>
>>52060149
We're discussing options. Cost, time, risk, all play a part. Part of my focus is to minimize risk so we can deliver everything as promised thus far on schedule.
At the same time we of course want to deliver as many awesome things as possible in terms of stretch goals. So we're exploring lots of options. The previous polling, ideation, etc you all did around stretch goals earlier was very helpful.

So for our first weapon we have an...
Oversized break-action pistol that throws out .303 Albish at MTN 8, it's proper huge so you'd need an overcoat to hid it in so it's got Conceal [1] but it's got the Reliable quality.

Seems like a hunting pistol go wrong, gone right, gone Third World police force?

Anyway onto the next weapon, for speeds sake let's have two d100 each time now.

Rolled 98, 80 = 178 (2d100)

>>52061971
Maybe a home-built rural-insurgent weapon? Like a Kyber Pass AK or all the various VC spud-guns. They don't have the technical know-how for semi-auto so they go break-action and they have a lot of .303 Albish on hand, so you get this.
>>
>>52061988
That's a break action RoF 1 Shotgun, I think >>52062017 may be on to something.

It's pretty similar to the S4M, a 2 shot break-open assasination weapon firing silenced 7.62 rounds.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S4M

This new gun is a fair bit larger than the S4M which does detract somewhat from the role as a concealed silent weapon for assasination, but could be seen as a bridge between the S4M and the Welrod. Probably more a commando weapon for ops where silence is golden than for spys.

And... it's a Piece of Shit

Some silly sportsman's show-piece that's not built for the abuse that these penniless bushmen put it through?
>>
>>52062391
I'm not sure how a break-action weapon /can/ jam. I mean, I'm sure it's possible, but aside from the action physically rusting shut I just can't think of anything.

>>
>>52062484
Opaque didn't make this document I don't think, SMGs can also have a RoF of 1 in this.

Still moving on let have two more d100s for our next weapon we'll stop when we feel we have the character of the faction down.
>>
Rolled 61, 2 = 63 (2d100)

>>52062546
>>
>>52062649
That's another shotgun but it's one away from a rifle so let's have one of those instead since we don't have one yet and with that 2 it's a carbine, perfect for our rough rag-tag mounted raiders.

A Self Loading Action is one in which the energy of a round fired is recycled, working the action and loading a fresh cartridge. Self Loading Actions have no special rules.

So that's a box magazine, with RoF 30. This is fucking weird.

We've only a 15% change of even holding 30 rounds.

>>
>>52063096
The amusing answer is of course that we ordered these fancy new guns for our partisans and they came in perfect condition with the exception of a manufacturing fuck up that stuck us with tiny magazines and not enough money or connections to fix the problem.

1: Croaker's fine, he's probably doing better than any of us in objective terms because he's got an airtight game plan and he dgaf about anything except whether or not he has a clear succession of meals from now until he dies of kidney failure in 50 years. So far the answer is yeah, he's set. He could probably move to china now and die before he ran out of money the way he lives.
If I thought for a second I'd be able to stand the lack of 4chan I'd go with him and we'd spend the rest of our lives getting into fights in Shanghai like the stupid violent Americans we are. It'd be great.

2: Anyway we're all fine, we've just had some time to take in the fact that we actually did it, and it's only getting bigger. Right now a lot of effort is going into ensuring that nothing gets in the way of our fulfilling our goals. Making sure all the venues of production are still in service--there might be some gravel in the gears but for now it looks like everything's flowing as intended.

A round of fanfare for blowing past all the stretch goals is in order. Many congratulations to Jimmy and the Opaque team for pulling through and getting the Kickstarter funded. Hopefully, there's more to come as their social media presence increases

As for me, I am unable to do too much work lately on the LaTeX PDF, for which reason the PDF has been mostly unchanged the past month or two, but I've put in the updated Grappling rules and hopefully I've not made the PDF worse than before by fucking something up in the meanwhile.

The reason I'm in doubt is because I don't have the necessary time for thorough QA, so I'm now reliant on you dear Anons to report any issues you find at https://pad.riseup.net/p/Song-of-Swords so I can fix them. The fixes usually take little time, compared to the finding of errors, so any slightly misaligned table, any typos, any ugliness, please write it on the etherpad and I'll try to see what I can do.

As always, the source code is available in the GitHub repo at https://github.com/progamanon/latexed-SOS/tree/spacemacs (I've pushed 0.2.0 to a separate branch, so that the last working version, 0.1.3, isn't overridden yet)

Party on, dudes

>vi
Don't be a hipster yo. Vim is great, no reason to use vi. Even the "vi is on every system, gotta have it handy when tunneling in" argument seems a bit disingenuous with vim being arguably more prevalent than vi nowadays.

>>52045105
They really aren't interchangeable. Emacs can do things vim can't, but vi does what it does far more conveniently and (arguably) efficiently than Emacs

Personally I just use evil-mode in Emacs and get the best of both worlds, but hey, degenerate race-mixing is to be expected from a dune coon like me I suppose
>>
>>52073496
>They really aren't interchangeable
Most people are not going to use the trillion extra features emacs provides, so it really comes down to preference. I mean who the fuck actually uses the emacs IRC clients? There's like six of them bundled with the standard package until you purge them.

>no reason to use vi
Learning to use vi is still important because a lot of systems don't use vim. I use emacs but vi is generally all that's available in 'basic' environments like "oops you fucked your system here's your rescue shell gl'. I mean nano and ed always exist too, I guess.
>>
>>52073496
Under Social Classes, Beautiful is supposed to be (3) for slave.
Also can you do something about Ch12? It's basically just an empty chapter and feels like it belongs as a summary for Part II more than a chapter of its own.
>>
>>52073577
Fixed the Slave thing
As for the Equipment chapter, you're absolutely right, and I've been meaning to remove it, I had just forgotten since I haven't used the PDF in a while. It is now removed, and there's a page with the description for Equipment under the Part heading instead.

Thanks for bringing these issues to my notice

>>52073560
...I like erc though
Emacs' configurability is definitely a very strong point for it tough, and people do use it, unless they really, really would be better off with Atom or whatever. AUCTeX with cdlatex is the only way I've found I can take notes for chaos theory stuff or quantum mechanics fast enough. `Q'. is a lot faster than manually typing $\dot{\Theta}$

I haven't used Vim-LaTeX, so I can't say for sure whether it works as well, but that Emacs is configurable enough that you could make those things yourself, and for just about anything you could think of, is definitely a difference. The fact that you don't have to uninstall a shitload of packages that you'll never use, and in general that you won't HAVE to configure it, is a huge thing in vim's favor, so I'd argue that they're far from interchangeable.

Also, the core editing styles are vastly different. You can't really compare modal editing to what emacs' chorded system directly.

Also, if you know vim, you probably know vi enough to do whatever you need in one of those bare-bones environments, was my impression.

Fuck ed though, I'm not enough of a real man to be able to comprehend that shit
>>
>>52073658
>AUCTeX with cdlatex is the only way I've found I can take notes for chaos theory stuff or quantum mechanics fast enough. `Q'. is a lot faster than manually typing $\dot{\Theta}$
>not just scribbling them down and organizing them later in full color
Man I still remember in university, my sister came home every semester with hundreds of pages that looked like they were typed and printed by full color printers, but were actually just re-copied after the fact with rulers and everything, and the killer was she did this AFTER acing the finals just because she wanted pretty notes to shove in her shelves.

>if you know vim
That's the problem though, vim is to vi as C++ is to C. There's things you can do in vim that vi, at least its bare version, doesn't recognize.

So...is Complete Monster just "psychopath"? Because that really sounds like munchkin material, even for non-munchkins, considering that while psychopaths look after themselves and themselves, only, they are generally speaking well and truly experts in human interaction and know what they're 'supposed' to act like. It's not like a psychopath, generally speaking, behaves visibly monstrous, as a rule, unless this is expected to help them. CM is just the in-universe munchkin trait, which includes not acting like a munchkin unless called for.

Can't just scribble down lemmas or expanded Dirac notation and expect to be able to parse it afterwards. I've decent handwriting, but if you haven't tried the horror of trying to decipher notation for vibrational/rotational spectroscopy where xi, alpha, a, v, nu, V are all very different, very important factors, and S is different from *S* in a critical way, and they're all used in the same equations, and are written at breakneck pace by someone who only reveals whether he means Lambda or OR or even 1 (his 1s are awful), you have not felt the bliss that LaTeX can provide,

I do revise my notes, but I do it with org-velocity and org-drill, among others, but I need my Emacs to make notes useful at all, rather than just decoration

I'm studying nanoscience, first year but with several extra electives because I'm a masochist

We don't have major/minor things here, just a major of sorts, which isn't a subject as much as a field.

I'm not sure how that relates to having to write those variables and constants over and over in a discernible way while also listening to the lecture, though. I left out a bunch of letters too, so I can't imagine doing it well by hand when including vartheta and varphi and phi and Psi and the rest of the gang

Hold the fuck up, undergraduate first year, and you're taking QM and using Dirac? That doesn't seem right at all.

Because I'm in particle physics and took philosophy -> ontology and mathematics -> topology as minors, and your classes sounded like particle physics.
>>
>>52074035
It's a second-year/third-year undergraduate elective, for which QM was a prereq, but we're allowed to sign up for classes whenever. It's our own job making sure we don't sign up for something we can't deal with.

I had a short course on philosophy of science actually, pretty good stuff. Sadly no particle physics, and way too little mathematics for my taste, but I try to get by with electives. Sorry to disappoint.

"Yeah, but no ADR?"
>Nope. [Implied: You are correct, no ADR is added. I'm not sure how you expected this to be answered in more depth, since it wasn't clear why you thought no ADR was an issue, since aiming had been mentioned, and it had been assumed you were then aware of the other mods since you were aware that ADR was not one of those mods]

That is correct. Additionally, the two paragraphs for Red/Red contradict each other and one should replace the other.
However, that's how it is in the updated Combat chapter too, which is why I hadn't changed it. I added a 'to-do' in the source code to fix it whenever Jimmy clarified, but... y'know

I double checked the rules on creating a character as best I could and paid attention to what sounded nice to have from the last tournament. I spent way too long deciding on the damn armor though.

The wrestling was admittedly just me throwing shit on there because I wanted something else but couldn't think of anything. Mild debate if I should just change it to pugilism but I don't want to change it too much.

Burma is a joke
Singapore is a literal fucking city-state that only got its shit together after the Brits literally put everything in place
Also SEAniggers are a cancer on this very website, and also haven't made any actual cultural contributions. Vietnam is just South China Lite without the whole "and then pulled ahead like Japan" and the rest of SEA is like, mini-India except hotter and sweatier

Given how ancient a tradition horse archery is in Japan, and how emblematic samurai are of Japanese warrior culture, I'd say it's fair to count the Japanese as horse archers for the purpose of memeing on China.

>>52081810
Actually two generations of Chinese and then half-Chinese men marrying blonde Germna women.
>>

Yeah but the one time the Ming actually fought samurai they weren't really doing as much horse archery. They also won the war...if primarily because the Nips couldn't get their logistical shit together and stop the Koreans from sinking all their damn ships.

At sea, yeah. On land, not as much. Japanese land armies were pretty competent in that war, even against Ming forces.

I think it's mostly because doing stories about that in any more detail than a brief reference would probably start a lot of butthurt from the South Korean market.
>>
>>52082709
>butthurt from the SK market
They don't fucking care about the SK market, it's miniscule compared to anything in Japan or even China.

>on land, not as much
Look, first off they would need to bite the bullet that they fucking lost. Second off, it was a war of aggression. These are relatively rare in manga, at least where the Japanese are concerned.
>>
>>52082693
I think that's his point. Chinks hate SEA.

>They don't fucking care about the SK market, it's miniscule compared to anything in Japan or even China.

China too, honestly. Though I've heard that South Korean popular media tends to play the Ming intervention in the war WAY the fuck down.

>Look, first off they would need to bite the bullet that they fucking lost. Second off, it was a war of aggression. These are relatively rare in manga, at least where the Japanese are concerned.

True. And now for some reason I can't stop thinking about GATE and the hilarious amounts of ultranationalism in that series.
>>
>>52082817
>China too
You mean the chinks would get butthurt? Not really, the chinese remember that war as "the koreans nearly got btfo even after we sent massive help to them and we did most of the work anyway" - the war. Chinks don't actually like the Koreans.

>Though I've heard that South Korean popular media tends to play the Ming intervention in the war WAY the fuck down.
I mean look, would you want to admit that the only reason your shit didn't get pushed in was because you used smuggled technology from your neighbor and your neighbor, who you had basically a vassal relationship with, decided to send a few reserves your way and help a lil'feller out?

>GATE
Gate is stupid as hell, honestly. I mean, is it somewhat realistic? Yes, but it gets to the point where there's just no conflict, it's just wank. I would like it a lot more if they ran into an epic PF mage or something like a Tarraresque or something. Also maybe the legions would be less fucking retarded.
>>
>>52082892
>Chinks don't actually like the Koreans.

No, but you know what they like even less than the Koreans? The Japanese. China gets assblasted at *anything* that portrays Japs as anything less than demons incarnate.

>I mean look, would you want to admit that the only reason your shit didn't get pushed in was because you used smuggled technology from your neighbor and your neighbor, who you had basically a vassal relationship with, decided to send a few reserves your way and help a lil'feller out?

Haha, yeah. Though admittedly they also had Admiral Yi, the Skullfucker of Japs, on their side.
>>
>>52082967
>China gets assblasted at *anything* that portrays Japs as anything less than demons incarnate.
This explains why stuff like Oda Nobuna or NA sells well. They generally get assblasted at ANYTHING past the late Qing era aka "we were at the top of the world and then suddenly we were the cumslut of the world everyone wanted a piece of wtf happened" the era, or shit like GATE which is blatant glorification and whitewashing on more than one account. The part where the media dude asks "are we going to become like the nazis and commit war crimes" implying they were totally pure before, I could almost hear the howls for Sino Japanese III.

I want to run a 19th century monsterhunting game. Some people suggested I use a mix of Ballad and (LaTeX) Song of Swords for various reasons. Namely:
1. I like the Luck rules and how Toughness is redone.
2. More modern firearms will eventually come up. Starting firearms will be the gray area that SoS and Ballad don't specifically cover in detail, which are advanced blackpowder guns.
3. Melee combat will still be a big thing, as will armor.
4. Missile combat is apparently better in Ballad?

Please help me make this less of a clusterfuck. What do I need to do to make this work?

My group never played SoS and vanilla SoS can be confusing enough for new players. Right now I'm trying to make an edited version of Ballad that combines some SoS elements and removes Ballad setting-specific elements that I don't want.

So far I'm thinking that I"ll need to stat new firearms. Someone mentioned there are no missile penalties for shooting in Ballad and the ones in SoS can't be used for Ballad so IDK what to do there.

Oh, and how would you make a Dhampir or Dhampir-esque race work in the system?
