What are you waiting on post wise lads?

I have a Metal Greymon resin kit on the way from some ching chong place. Was 50% off and it looked a good place to start working with resin on.

Just got my sylvaneth starter kit, how should I paint these dudes. Was thinking cherry blossom, but figured the pink would look strange on a tabletop.
>>
>>51970316
Pink is all over the place these days, the novelty is long worn off when every other week is a charity event for tit tumours so everyone has a half pink army.
>>
What bits are ideal for building a shoulder mounted gun, either firing over the shoulder (see: Predator) or a harness hooked into tbe armor (see: Doom)? Got a decent chunk of Mechanicus dudes in power armor who'd likely want their shoulder guns going while they worked with their hands. And the latter just looks better for Devs.
>>
>>51970266
I just bought, essentially, the rest of my army for dirt cheap (less than $100 for 1600 points). Gonna be loads of fun putting it all together and getting it painted.

Alright, I followed your advice on the skin, and lightened it up significantly, then applied a shade of druchii violet to it in order to give it a bit of definition.

I also added some more metallic blue to the carapace.

All in all I can't say it's amazing. The skin is still really dark, not very striking on the table top, ya.know?
The paint itself is also really thick, so work on thinning it down.
Could be camera lighting, but I kinda like the carapace itself. With the skin I recommend some edge highlighting to give.definition.
Side suggestion, the carapace can be two toned. A lighter Metta license blue feathered on the edges can bring out contrast. I like the talons, though

All in all, it's meh. It won't look striking on the tabletop and with nids that can actually be a problem as dudes blend together from a distance. A brighter base can mitigate that if you want to keep your color scheme.
In summary: edge highlight, add more contrasting tones.

Will copper plated BBs work as paint bottle agitators? My hobby lobby has a bunch of Vallejo paint for 3 dollars a bottle but a lot of it has separated and I would have to shake the fuck out of them before they could be used
>>
>>51970867
have you thought about some brighter metallic highlights on the carapace? I think a very fine silver highlight could really add some definition, as the scheme looks a bit muddy/same-y. I dig the palette overall though!
>>
>>51970839
Looking better, think about applying a layer of the colour under your wash then some much lighter highlights

try glass or silica beads instead, amazon or ebay should have them pretty cheap
>>
>>51970839
>>51970867

Looks pretty good. I like the.. Iridescent theme

If it was me, I'd maybe highlight ever so slightly around edges so that detail wasn't lost.

But I'd put it on a nice bright base for contrast, consider snow effect on brown earth for example.

I'd happily play against you and your army and you will only get better with practice too.

Keep it up and try to ignore the trolls.

I am happy with the carapace, (might need some lighter metallic blue for highlighting) but the skin bugs me. I might have to try testing out going with really pale look to see how it would fit. I don't want to make white skin though, just sort of really pale, sickly grey.

I Love the black and glowing look but I dare not try to replicate it without a guide of somekind and I am aparently too stupid to find it if there is one.

>>51971861

From the looks of it, it uses a very bright metallic undercoat and then uses a few different colors of glaze to create a sort of iridescent effect like a beetle's shell.

I would guess the glazes are done very thin in a few layers to get it just right and in the right spots. Positioning those colors seems to be the key to the effect after that.

sup /wip/ how would you recommend going about making a foot-slogging model for Balthasar Gelt? I figured I could probably kitbash something using a stormcast eternal head, but I'm having trouble finding a good body.
>>
>>51971929

WHFB Empire torso might have the right cloth for it, but the robed legs would be what ties it together. Arms to taste, those shouldn't be too hard to find. After that, you might have to greenstuff a robe.

Stormcast head is right on the money. If not that, try a Sanguinary Priest mask.

Just finished up on the skin for these guys
>>
>>51972025

I suck at skin. How'd you do this?
>>
>>51971929
The easiest thing would be to use the mounted model, chop the torso off and plopp it onto any robed body you can find. The model doesn't seem to have any specific details below the waiste, so any warrior priest or sorcerer you like could do. Or use something cheaper like one of the robed plastic bodies from the high elf range.

If you don't want to use the old model the regular plastic sorcerer kit is a really good place to start as well. Has all the parts for a metal sorcerer, the robes, cape and the high collar. You just need to add the halo to the model then,
Maybe the blood angels range has some useful heads too.

>>51972099
It's easy. Base colour, flesh colour, wash then flesh again and a final highlight.

For the majority of my guys I started with rakarth flesh as the base then a layer of kislev flesh, washed with reiklands fleshshade, another layer of kislev and a highlight of flayed one flesh. Hope that helps
>>
>>51971558
Anyone?
>>
>>51971115
Sickly pale, try mechanicum standard grey, pallid wych flesh highlight, and (guessing you want the violet) druchii violet wash.
>>
>>51972153

Maybe. I'm thinking of doing a more sickly kind of skin for a servitor, something that turns an unhealthy blue/purple in the recesses and pallid everywhere else.

Thinking that with my terrible painting skills but pretty good converting talent, I might have to send my stuff off for commission rather than suffer a good model a bad coat of paint.
>>
>>51972257
Could start with something like Fenris Grey and work up from that, maybe a wash of purple or blue instead with a highlight of wych flesh
>>
>>51972296

I might have to make a test mini for concept. Something I can fuck up and not care about.

I might also need to get more specific paints.

The casters ask the catalogs to not be posted because they just don't need to be. They can be found if you have half a brain and google. Much like they should in threads, recasts shouldn't be flaunted. It is considered ILLEGAL here. However price gouging is IMMORAL. That is my opinion.

>>
OK, two questions:

1) does anyone know of a way to selectively strip certain sections of a model of paint? I accidentally messed up a couple sections of my land raider when priming, but don't want to try to strip the entire thing.

2) what specific brand/kind of plastic glue would you guys recommend? I've been using super glue exclusively on everything since I started but I would like to use plastic glue. I would prefer to use something cheaper than GW, but if GW's is the highest quality for their plastics I'll use it.

Waiting for my Ahriman blue to get here, and then these'll be all blued up and done. I'm still getting back into the swing of things, and these are probably disgusting to most of you but. I am aware i need to thin my paints. And it's been working.
These are Normal Chaos Marines painted in thousand son colours, i have rubrics ready to paint aswell. any pro-tips for anyone doing this army and colour scheme?

considering how long these models have been around they could even be with GW paints that's two generations old. Hexpot screw on lid old.

Or they could be Vallejo, P3, Coat d'Arms or any other brand of paint.
You'll just have to eyeball it anyway. Don't obsess about getting the 'right' shades.

needs a bit of highlighting. They're pretty flat.
>>
>>51974713
Shitty pic, but I'll r8 if you're not trolling.

>1. THIN YOUR PAINTS
Put a few drops of water in your paints. Aim to make them the consistency of milk. Use a wet palette (put some water in the bottom of a tupperware container, put a sponge in it (top of sponge should be above the water line), and put some parchment paper or a baking sheet over it and mix your paints on that) to keep your paints from drying out and looking chunky.
>2. Shave your moldlines
Almost all the guy's helmets have big old lines on them from the molding process. You want to shave those away either with a pocket/hobby knife or a file.
>3. File down your sprue nubs.
Look at the muzzle of the plasma pistol on the guy second to the left in the front. That's bad. You don't want that. Shave/file it down.
>4. Drill out your barrels
Simple thing to do that makes all your guns look better. Get a little handheld pin vise and some drill bits and put a little hole in each barrel. You don't have to go deep, but it creates a nice effect. For the Heavy Bolter I'd drill out the barrel and each of the little side holes - makes it look really nice.
>5. Use a wash and do some highlights.
It looks like you used Agrax on a few of the guys, but you should have really used Drakenhoff Nightshade on the blue armor. A good rule of thumb is to match the color of the basecoat with the color of wash: Nuln Oil on silver and blacks, Carroburg Crimson on dark reds, Athonian Camoshade on greens, etc. Other than the wash, I don't see almost any highlights on any of the guys however. Pick up some layers and/or drybrush paints and learn how to use 'em.

Also, take a better picture. Put a backdrop behind these guys and disable flash on the camera. Flash fucks with the color of the minis something awful. Anyway, good models for a new guy. I may have kinda tore you a new one here, but you got promise. Stick with it and learn and you'll get somewhere. I've definitely seen worse.

I got back into painting after a couple years after teaching a friend the basics for his d&d figures so I painted some plague drones along with him. I'm kinda curious what the best way to go about highlighting plague drones is? I can highlight plaguebearers just fine I think but I'm not super sure on the big ol flies. Oh, honey, what did you do?
Get yourself some Blu-Tack or some other adhesive putty and use it to play around with posing and seeing how parts on your minis fit together. Not all of these arms are compatible, so make sure you've got the right pairing, and don't try to rush yourself when gluing, you don't need to do both arms at once. Do one arm, let it dry, get the bolter or whatever in place with the putty, glue the other arm.

Sup /wip/. I painted this up on Comission for a friend. He wanted me to do L3(tabletop), with an L2 base, and I'm charging him 13$ a model to paint mechs.

My method for painting this was to first prime black, then I painted all-over with Eshin Grey. I followed up by painting the red stripes with Mephiston red, and then used Nuln Oil to darken everything.

After the nuln oil, I used a second coat of Nuln Oil Gloss to darken everything further to a near-black, while also producing natty highlights.

The red stripes were then touched back up by mixing Wild Rider Red with the mephiston still in my wet palette, and then adding nuln oil gloss to the mix to produce a wetblend, that I selected a sufficiently bright+gloss mix from.

The Cockpit was done with stormhost silver and some waystone green.

He's usually pretty good at walking you through it, if you don't already have the catalogue you can email and inquire, then you need to give him the product codes for what you want to order, let him write up the cost, pay him via PayPal and send shipping details.
>>
Utterly botched magnetising a Calth heavy bolter. Saved it from uselessness, but it's going to take some GS and it's not going to be of any use except letting me paint the HB separately.

Bit of a noob question, but is there a trick to aligning the three pieces (2 arms and bolter+hand) so that the two magnetised parts at the wrist snap together flush while the bolter's handle rests well in the palm of the other arm? I think what I fucked up on was getting the magnet into the right arm at an angle, but if anyone has had experience/trouble with this particular task before, can you tell me what the pitfalls you learnt to avoid were and how you managed to achieve this properly?

Havign difficulty deciding between a Leviathan dread and the BT dread to be honest. On one hand, I love the detail of the Templar dreadnought, but on the other hand, I have wanted a Leviathan since someone described them as "tiny dishwashers of pure hatred and rage"

Get a leviathan. After I had my Leviathan survive an entire Apoc game and kill 2 superheavies on his own, I've been wanting to get more leviathans.

My dream now is to get SIX leviathans and call them " The BFG Division", all in drop pods, all there to fuck shit up. Purely because I want to see the look on people's faces in an apoc game as I put six drop pods on the table, all with Leviathan Dreadnoughts. It's totally unexpected, and vastly scarier than just some big-ass titan.
>>
>>51976184
I'd recommend just picking the bt dread for the moment, seems like it'd be easier to build than a leviathan. Resin can be a nightmare to work with, and sometimes you're going to make up the discount with China resin in terms of labour involved in putting it together, so I'd only recommend getting one dread atm.

I don't know who alpharius is in this context, but maybe someone else can help.

I'm charging him the Frontline Gaming chart, at the lowest possible scale(25mm infantry). Which is quite reasonable apparently.. Honestly I just don't like that he wants me to paint black. I CAN paint black, and I CAN make it look good, but it just doesn't look as great as it could with other colour schemes.

I used to do "Friend prices", up until a "Friend" abused that by getting me to paint 60 Ork Boyz all at once. That shit made me literally lose my will to paint for an entire year, it was so fucking miserable.

I'm a professional painter now, and have been painting for 5 years. I have 2 level 5 models under my belt, and a consistent track record with doing level 4. I'm completely within my right to charge what is normal for other professional painters.
>>

I just gotta figure out what Loadouts I want to run them with. Obviously every last one of them is going to have Armoured Ceramite, 3 Hunter Killers(just for that extra Alpha Strike firepower), and a Lucius Drop Pod.

Right now my current leviathan has a Storm Cannon and Shredding Claw. I know I want to have one leviathan with Two Cyclone Meltas, just for pure damage output against vehicles.

So let's see this setup:
> Storm Cannon + Claws
> Double Cyclone Melta
> Claw+Drill
> Double Storm Cannon
> Drill+Melta
> Melta+Claw

>>51976431
Z's leviathan is straight up indistinguishable in every conceivable way from forgeworld. And it's assembly went completely without a hitch, with the only time I needed to break out a hair-dryer was with his storm cannon. But as I understand, the forgeworld storm cannon has that same issue.

You can't get much better quality than "indistinguishable from forgeworld", especially since he sent mine in ABS PLASTIC instead of resin. That's the indestructible shit that legos are made out of.

Why is white so difficult to paint? Every time I try it, it will take 3-4 thick layers to get a consistent colour throughout unless i am painting on complete white, and any shading makes a complete mess.
What am I doing wrong?
>>
>bundle costs 20 cents more than adding the individual pieces separately
What did the Chinaman mean by this?
>>
>>51977153
> Thick layers
You have SEVERAL options for painting white

Primer Method:
> Start with White Primer
> Wash with Agrax Earthshade
> Thin your fucking paints you dense fucker
> Rakarth Flesh on everything but the recesses
> White Scar

Black Primer Method:
> Your choice of 2 THINNED COATS of Rakarth Flesh or Celestra Grey
> White Scar

It's not that hard, it just takes time. The reason it fucking sucks is because you aren't using your base-coat properly. YOU CANNOT PAINT WHITE ON SOMETHING THAT ISN'T ALREADY EITHER WHITE, OR OFF-WHITE.

All of the white paints are highly transparent, and very poorly pigmented. That means they show a LOT of the colour underneath them.
>>
>>51977320
I'll go with the first method. I'll stick to pin washing though because i tried general washing and it just left stains that needed another few layers of white, as i'm using some old space marines i bought when I was a kid. Thanks.

Different dude here

Is there anything in Z's catalogue that should be avoided, or is most of his stuff on the same level? I'm sure there's some variance between two of the same cast, but I wasn't sure if anything was consistently poor.
>>
>>51977694
>>
>>51977765
To clarify on this further, he straight up uses Google Translate to communicate with you. So you need to use a 1st grade english kind of speaking when talking with Z.

>>51977797
Anything that is already bad with real forgeworld. So any model that would have excessively large/long flat pieces like the Fire Raptor.

Also the Malcador Vanquisher should never be bought, and even the catalog warns against buying it, because the original forgeworld model is dogshit. Also avoid geedubs bikes like the plague.
>>
>>51977834

Does that include drop pod variants? I know the claws can be a little fucky sometimes.

Also, are the sales in that catalogue current? If so, I think I might finally get an Avenger Strike Fighter for my Sisters.
>>
>>51977797
The big downside to Z is that his stuff varies wildly in quality. I got some perfect casts from him along side miscast, warped, bubble filled, flash ridden stuff. I said it earlier in the thread but sometimes you'll end up losing any savings you'd have from Chinese resin due to the labour involved in getting it to a decent quality.

In general I'd avoid large vehicles. He seems to have some issues with casting large pieces, resulting in loads of bubbles and warping. While you can fix some warping, other warping is hell. I still have nightmares about a particularly badly warped wave serpent hull I got from him.

His basic infantry is pretty solid however. Most of his infantry casts are done in ABS plastic which is a lot more durable and less prone to warping than resin.

However, you should remember that he actually replaces miscasts for free, covering postage himself. I did it once just recently, recently enough that the stuff is still currently in the post. Dunno what the quality will be like, but anything better than before is fine by me.
>>
>>51977901
I have two drop pods from him. They're kinda difficult to assemble as you need a hair-dryer to put the fins together, but otherwise the models were completely flawless. My drop pod was literally untouched by a knife, and I put it on the tabletop twice-weekly at a games workshop, alongside my chinese leviathan, my chinese deredeo, and all my chinese razorbacks. Not a single person can tell the difference.

>>51977915
Z has evidently been moving more of his stuff to ABS(Dark Grey Plastic) recently. All 10 of my Razorbacks were in ABS.

However, out of 10 razorbacks I got from him, 2 are now terrain pieces. So always be ready for that possibility...
>>
Alright, so after I sent him the first email, which I now realize might e a bit confusing if put through Google translate, I sent him a second email saying:

"yes, the order detailed in the attachment is correct.

Send a paypal invoice to: ___"

is that worded in a clear enough manner?
>>
>>51977915

Hrm, so the smaller the better? Maybe I'll try a legion squad of ass Marines from him. I also kinda wish I had this info earlier because I ordered a bunch of weapons from MI last week, and his are significantly cheaper. Can't say anything about quality yet obviously.

>>51977977

Core, Kyra and Lavarath, Shub, Marthrangul, some expansions and some add ons. Can't wait!

I got to work on building up my first Deathwatch team and am thrilled to see cloaked bodies and cowled heads in the kits. Other than Deathwatch vets and DA vet kits, anyone know any good sources of robed bodies/cloaks/capes/cowled heads?

Citadel Painting Chart.jpg

I'm still trying to get started with painting (only done a few minis and really basics/minimum) so please bear with me and all my annoying questions.

First, how do I know whether a model needs to be primed to paint? I was looking at getting some of the hero forge premium plastic ones if that makes any difference. But I've come across some minis that people say have to be primed, and some that people say don't.

Second, how do I know what colors go well with other colors? I don't mean the shades/layering stuff (I've been using pic related for that which I assume is good enough, right?) I mean the primary color for an outfit versus the secondary color for (because it'd probably be boring if I made every section of a wizard robe purple, right?)

Third, I honestly still don't understand how to tell which colors "go" with the other ones (this time I AM talking about shades and layering). I was trying to figure out how much can I deviate from the chart to buy fewer paints, or if it'd look "wrong" if you used different colors. Is there any easy way to tell if you can use certain colors together?
>>
A couple of questions regarding modelling:

1) May I have some recommendations regarding what brand of plastic glue to use? I have been usign superglue exclusively so far, and would like a more permanent bond.

2) What's a good set of files to get? I bought a set of three Army Painter brand files, but there isn't a particularly fine file in the set, so there are always scratches.
>>
>>51979233
What are you ordering?
I'm contemplating a $300 order
>>
>>51979380

20 assault marines, a bunch of night lord upgrade kits(FW and derpy GW), an Avenger strike fighter, bases, dragon wings for my wingless princes, special weapons, maybe more terminators and a helldrake.

I just don't know if I should. Buyer's remorse and I haven't even pulled the trigger lol. I feel like I want to put a bigger order in because free shipping at $150, and less than that cuts into the savings. I feel like an addict sometimes.

What I learned doing my first box of Sons:
Do the complete gold first - basecoat, layer, shade, neaten up layer, highlights, extreme highlights
Then fill in the blue panels including recess shade with Nuln Oil and highlights
If you're neat enough you'll only have to clean up a few occasional slips onto the gold, which is much easier than having to reapply recess shades and redoing the blue.

General tips: paint in subassemblies. Because I'm a lazy fuck I only left their right arms, including bolter and shoulderpad off, but it still allowed for access to difficult spots.

>>
>>51980139
Looking great dude, what were you planning on doing with the base?
>>
>>51975199
The entire Ork race is latently psychic. Individually, it doesn't do much, but when you have a lot of Orks in one place it starts to get strong enough to fuck with reality. The thing is, most Orks don't notice this because they're bloody stupid (I think Weirdboyz are the ones who've started to twig something is up) and jsut assume that the warped reality is how its suppsoed to be. This leads to them making bizarre collective decisions like "This gun works" and, well, the gun will work. There's an offhand comment in a codex somewhere about an Ork pistol that is literally a tube with a magazine attatched that still fired when an Ork used it. It's the same reason why the Warboss is always the biggest Ork; they assume that the top Ork is the biggest, so the collective power of the waaaagh! makes him bigger, thus cementing his position as the boss.

Yeah, that's why their prices are so high. Know what you sound like? A victim of domestic abuse. You rationalize for these multi-million dollar conglomerates when they triple their MSRP while only having to adjust few costs. The value of the dollar, pound or euro didn't inflate to that degree nor does the cost of doing business. Especially not when their in store staffing is close to nil and battle bunkers absorb outliers.

I do commissions on and off since college got really busy, I let people send in their own models to be painted rather than me buy and assemble it for an extra fee.

I always put in the condition i would never paint recasts of any sort, for the following reason.

I can not tell you how many times i got a shitty recast of a FW model or some GW hq. I could always tell wich recast came from who because how the general lack of quality and work put into these models

First off there a mold slips absolutely everywhere which is what this anon pointed out on the leviathan.>>51980587 They also cannot do straight lines for shit, which is why the gun barels are so fucking crooked and aspie looking

Also for anyone who has ever tried to get rid of mold lines on these things will get the unpleasent smell that is released by whatever chink plastic they use. It literally smells like someone dumped gasoline in your room everytime you cut off a little plastic

And the worst part is that any curved area has these little lines from when hte rescaster did not even feel like making a good curve, putting on paint just makes it more obvious

probably nothing, but recasters normally won't let you order a ton of shit all at once, and many don't even take new customers except a few times a year. They might tell other recasters as well about your info to put you on a blacklist.

My first thousand son though the gold isn't quite finished, need to get reikland fleshade tomorrow since it needs to be redder than seraphim sepia.

Pleased with the white, dunno why GW doesn't paint the bolters white since it really adds to the egyptian theme.

Thanks for the Protips guys. Greatly Appreciated. As i said, i havn't got my Ahriman Blue yet. should get it on Sat. So. We'll see how it goes with them when i get it.

I have been doing all the golds first, as it is miles easier to do, and thanks for the mold-lines and Flash tips, i'l get round to drilling the gun holes in, in due time.

And thanks for the Arm/Bolter tip too, it is a pain, the hardest part to paint on these normal chaos marines, are the legs where they curve around the back, good thing the rubrics and occult terminators i've got have gilded edges where the gold will go, so i don't feel like smashing the model to bits.

I applied nuln oil on the blue parts because, it's what it says to do on the box for the blues on the rubrics, i can try to apply less.

Also. Is there a video to show you how to set up a wet pallette like you described? That sounds pretty awesome. And thanks for actually telling me HOW my paint should look, i have been thinning them. First time doing this seriously, when i was a kid i did this, but it was not as serious as i'm into it now, and i want to get some really nice looking models.

Batch painting these six so that I stand a chance of finishing them before I go on holiday this weekend.

>Yellow helmet is the BA standard for assault marines. He could do a kneepad too, I think the official scheme has something like that.

Indeed, yellow helmet is assault marines. The squad badge is the right poleyn (knee guard), so black with yellow lightning bolt for 7th squad and yellow with black lightning bolt for 8th squad.

>but screw buying OOP/Exclusive

>>51981646
If they're sending in for commission probably don't need to be in the hobby anyway. The only real exception is a store wanting nice looking tutorial models.

>>51983492
>lmao you need to buy oop from GW

are you actually retarded? what do you think the term OOP means you fucking moron?
>>
>>51983492
you do realize you can't buy OUT OF PRODUCTION models from gw, because they're literally out of production. same with event models, since most of them require going to a place halfway across the world for a fucking model that you can only get one of.

kek, thats what gw wants you to believe.

If some shady chinks actually manage to provid better casting quality then that is the problem, not the "evil" pirates.
>>
>>51983527
>>51983560
Why aren't you buying them second hand? What, too expensive for you because there's an element of rarity to it?
>>
>>51983626
>buying secondhand models
>>
>>51983671
Stop your fucking bitching because you can't have readily available access to said models. Either put up with scalpers or second hand sales and put your autist dollars where your mouth is, or shut the fuck up about chink model buyers in general.
