have you considered that it might just be the format in which GW games' are designed that turns you off?
i.e. paint 50 of the same miniatures until you got a basic army.

I'd recommend trying a skirmish game instead. If you got about a dozen minis you are basically done. Depending on the system all unique and a challenge on their own to paint.
It's a lot more fun.

>>51922153
They *are* painted, believe it or not.

>>51922173
>all unique and a challenge on their own to paint.
This is about 75% of the problem right here. I hate painting with a passion; I love conversions, but they have a semi-annoying tendency to sit as black-primed plastic for a long time afterwards. If commission painters charged anything remotely reasonable, I'd ship them off to one of the local guys that does it.

Plus, "all unique" models in skirmish games... that are all identical across different players. Not my thing.
Doesn't help that our Infinity community is led by the guy that duped me into buying into 40k by claiming "we've got a ton of players still, you'll get plenty of games!", then letting me know a week later that the store had stopped having any 40k players come in months ago and they were actively encouraging Dropzone and Infinity over 40k, to the point of cancelling 40k events for skirmish open play, full-scale politely declined. Considering the group is almost exclusively "that guy's friends", I have no intention to support him again, with my dollar or my patronage.

>>
>>51922278
Were it only that fast. My 30k Marines (the one faction I intend on sticking with) take me 3-4 hours per model, skipping the highlight part.
>>
>>51922235
>I hate painting with a passion
Yeah, then it doesn't really matter what mini you pic up.

Unless you do necrons or tyranids for 40k.
But if you don't give a fuck about 40k anyway you don't have to worry about that either.

Is there even a game that you actually want to play yourself?
If you're pissed off about the whole thing with 40k painting the models is hardly gonna be fun either.

I'm similar, except that when I pick up a brush I do enjoy it. I just enjoy converting a lot more. And picking up a brush takes a lot of determination.

Seriously though, the commission painter thing is a possibility. Or you could see if one of your gaming buddies is wired so that he hates building models, but loves painting them...
>>
I fucking want my conversion bits to arrive this week. Can't wait to start fiddling with those things, god dammit.

And I want something different to work on after non-stop painting up AdMech models to MAYBE finish in time for Saturday with 5 1/2 Kataphrons still left to paint and having my next chance of painting them on Thursday.
>>
Does anyone have any tips on how to do large areas of very red rust? Like that on an oxidized I-Beam?
>>
>>51922304
>Is there even a game that you actually want to play yourself?
I enjoy 40k, sorta. As mentioned above, most of my experience is with Tau, and I hate their play style, but I still have a decent bit of fun with it. I don't really like wargames in general, and like 40k specifically for the models first, game second. If there was a better solution to digital 40k than Tabletop Sim, though, I'd switch over in a heartbeat, sell my collection, and never look back. Even with the loss of conversions.
I do like some of Infinity's aesthetics, but dislike the gameplay. Handful of Flames of War lying around, but I moved away from where the community was. DZC/Warmahordes/Sigmar never did either, KD:M is prohibitively expensive.

>If you're pissed off about the whole thing with 40k
I harbor a grudge, but I found another store that does have a community, and I've been playing there even if it's more distant.

>Seriously though, the commission painter thing is a possibility.
Not on my income. I have yet to see a remotely acceptable-looking commission painter that's within my discretionary spending for a *year* to afford, let alone to have do all my models.

I'd love it if there'd be a market for making conversions but not painting them. That way you could build stuff for people, sell it and finance someonr to paint your own stuff. It'd be great.

And if I were you, I'd honestly just ask one of your friends with acceptable painting skills to maybe paint some models for you for a few six-packs of beer or just give you a friend-price.

I want to do a different theme for my nurgle bikers than "fat guys with engorged bellies on choppers"
Preferably something with a different bike entirely than the standard, like the MK IV outriders or a conversion entirely. The MKIV are sleek but much like Thousand Sons they're husks. Or perhaps using the old frame I could make the frame of the bike completely rotted, with bone and flesh growths that almost encase the rider, using it as a host.
Any suggestions?

I made a Morkanaut out of a Gundam Zeon Mobile Worker. Most of the non-gundam parts are from the Wazbomma kit. That kit has good bits left over for days once you decide which flyer you're building. The gundam itself was a little too short for a 'naut, so I hacked up the shield it came with with some extra sprue and an ork glyph air intake to extend the torso, which had the added bonus of giving it a rather orky physique. I ran out of space for the weapons loadout it was supposed to have on the torso due to putting both twin-linked big shootas there, so I made the head as the kustom mega blasta. This thing is going to be hell to paint.

The torso compartment is also magnetized and opens on a hinge to sort of almost make the transport capacity feasible. My cell phone is horrible about making anything I do with styrene get washed out in a sea of white, but the inside of the door has a ladder to help the boys get out into battle. I still have a ton of rivets and greenstuff welding to add before I get it ready to prime.

$25/infantry model. Basecoat, highlight, and wash only.
That's the complaint. Not "get a living wage"- I live that every day, I know how it feels to be underpaid. Effectively $50-75 an hour, on the other hand, is a little high. And a little cost-prohibitive to have even a squad done.

So I just started getting back into painting and I'm having a shit time at highlighting my marines. I've been doing a decent job everywhere besides the helmet. I've been painting up some crimson fists so it's a pretty dark blue, but whenever I highlight the brow area above the lenses it just reminds me of blue fucking eyebrows. My base is the typical kantor blue then a nightshade wash and a highlight of alaitoc blue. Anyways is there some way I can highlight the brow area without it looking like blue eyebrows?

To be perfectly honest, the 1000 grit is probably excessive. Ultrafine grit like that is usually for polishing cars, but my autism demands the GS be indistinguishable from the plastic. fine grit and superfine grit should be fine.

Check some online painters, there are some reasonably priced ones out there.
>>
>>51925492
Check some other commission painters online, then you can gauge your skill level and prices. If you get no orders, you're charging too much, if you get swamped, to little. Over all, you have to find a price with which you're comfortable.
>>
>>51923930
My commission rates end up being like $3 an hour on line infantry because I'm always scared to charge more appropriately for the amount of work and ask more than the box itself cost. Big box sets are even worse because you'd have to charge like $200 to paint dark vengeance on the low end. It's why I prefer to paint heroes because it's easier to ask for more and recoop your lost time invested.

very nice effort on your models, they look good.

Just an FYI your file size is

This is very very big for an image, and you could shrink in a program like mspaint, to make it a third of the size - plus the file size is like a 15th of the size and it would still look fine (pic related)

So, quite a few theads ago I asked on how to make bases that look like they are in the Warp. The problem with simple over the top elements is the nature of Warhammer and Warhammer art makes it hard to actually make something Warpy. Skulls are fucking everywhere, pools of blood and pussy swamps exist in the material plane due to Daemon proximity, lava isn't unique, and the nature of magic in Fantasy and just how the entirety of Age of Sigmar works even makes psychedelic ground colors seem mundane.

So here's my idea. Using greenstuff I will sculpt a multi-layer base with long organic threads like vines or tree branches, but then cover them in super heavy acrylic gel. This then gets an ink coat in the color of whatever kind of Daemon it is, and a quick drybrush of a few related colors sporadically. Each Daemon will appear somewhat elevated above the "ground" which will be plain black and meant to be ignored.

While a swamp is mundane, a swamp pocket held up by what looks like swirly sickly green transparent tendril clouds is Warpy. Meadow flowers are mundane, meadow flowers held up by swirly purple tendril coulds are not.

My army is Slaaneshi so I'll be experimenting in that.

Thoughts?

Just (finally) finished my first Kataphron. Does that color scheme fit with the other dudes? Went pretty heavy and dark on the metal and didnt really find a lot of good places to apply the white to, so I figured I might as well do them a bit different.

Also tried to simulate a rust kind of thing on the treads, since metal on metal with some metal would've looked incredibly dull. First time doing any tread weathering and rust, turned out kind of alright I think.

No idea why the colors appear as bright and shiny in that image as they do (especially the copper tones looking golden) while the Kataphron's blue parts are near black. It's more in line with the other units IRL.

Yeah, was split between either doing that panel red or white as well. Opted for the red instead since I like to have a few easily recognizable red parts on my AdMech guys but don't want it to be a primary color either. Only having those small red plates between the treads would be barely noticeable, so a panel in the "propulsion half" of the Servitor seemed the most appropriate spot.
>>
>>51933786

Needing more white, I think I actually do agree with after giving it some more thought. The color theme's distribution is supposed to be:
>robes and primary vehicle plating = white
>inner coat, electronics and lights = red
>secondary armor plates and body armor = blue with bright silver
>open machinery = dark silver

So I'll have to disagree with making the chestplate white and front plate blue. I think however that having a white front plate and white "hip socket" on that Servitor would probably improve things quite a bit. Maybe do those two front nubs as red lights to still have it present on the front facing.

Also, thanks for the compliment! I am pretty proud of my angry Ork slappers myself.

That sounds like a pretty cool idea as well, actually. Allows for a ton of nifty conversions with Guard vehicles.
These guys' Forge World is tasked with getting cryptic, ancient Blueprints to work again and have been under siege from dozens of Waaghs for millennia to the point of the Orks thinking that the Mechanicus can somehow get everything to work, which means they actually can make all those blueprints work, but the moment they send their prototype off to Mars it breaks since it only worked due to Orks thinking that they get things to work. Means they rarely ever bring in good results, meaning Mars never gives them funding, support or the Archmagos a promotion, which makes the Archmagos angry enough to go and beat up "those dirty sabotaging Greenskins" himself with a giant Power Cane.

>>51934648
those flames are definitely teal. are you colourblind?
>>
>>51934664
I'm actually currently putting together that guy as his own mini and even worked out some rules for him.

It's basically going to be a giant mace the size of Cawl's axe and designed like the Rod of Office all Tech-Priests have. Just bigger. Much bigger. I have no fucking idea where to get a skull large enough for it.
>>
>>51934648
The flames come out pretty teal on the image (blue/green). Either way, the suggestion remains that I'd just use the same color throughout.
>>
>>51934633
Well, that IS also a way to use magnetizing and it's pretty damn useful, but also much rarer than a simple Wargear-swap magnetization.
>>
>>51934760
I'd just take a skull from one of those skeletal kid's toys they have in museum gift shops and stuff, depending on how large you want it. and of course it's always worth asking around at your LGS
>>
>>51934633
>I had thought it might be magnetizing the whole thing to make it easy to carry without damaging it.
That can be done too, though often its more of an unintended side effect of magnetization than the primary intent.
Some fragile minis are much easier to transport in subassemblies (combinations of parts that aren't quite the complete mode, but easily fit together make the full model; it's kind of like how some mecha or robots combine to make even bigger robots) than they are fully assembled.
>>
>>51934832
>skeletal kid's toys they have in museum gift shops
Why have I been so blind to not have that idea myself? You just enlightened me so much, holy shit, thank you. I've been combing through Sigmar and FB sets for days trying to find something with a skull bigger than ~4mm with no luck.

Hey WIP I have a question. So I really wanna put some custom decals onto shields and banners for my army, but I'm shite at free handing. I have the design I want in picture form. What I was wondering was if I took and scaled it down and then cut it out of masking tape and put the tape over what i wanted the design on before painting in the cut out areas do you think that would work? And when i peeled the tape back would it strip paint from the area it had been covering?

Okay, so I posted this a while back, and when I did I was told it needed to be shaded. I've been working on assembling the others, but now that they are all at the point where I'm going to start painting them soon I need to revisit how I paint them, and I was hoping for some specific advice.

As far as shading goes I had actually shaded this, though apparently not enough. I took Rikeland fleshshade to the face and I didn't like the splotchy drunken look it gave it so i went back over and cleaned up non recessed areas. Perhaps I was overzealous when painting and got rid of too much of the shade.

As for the armor I hit some of the recesses and under her uh assets, with nuln, and then went over the whole thing with a watered down nuln oil wash a few times, but apparently that's too subtle. I'm afraid to just slather it in nuln because it took a lot of effort to get the white plate like that and I don't want to fuck it up. I understand it looks a little flat, but I'm afraid it'll just come out looking worse after i'm done. I'm really not very good at painting.

So WIP i ask you, what do I do? Advice? Useful videos I should watch? Maybe some pictures showing what you do?

>What should I try to improve next time?
You could look up some references for the NMM stuff next time and try to sharpen up the contrasts there. Right now you have a very smooth, creamy transition between bright and dark. That looks nice, but is not representative of how metal reflects light.
Depends on what style you are going for though.

Either way nice job.
I also like the presentation. The base does a good job of framing the model. Some painters kind of go a bit overboard on that and create huge displays that overshadow the mini itself. You didn't do that, which I like.

I have a lot of work ahead of me...

I would rate them slightly under Kromlech in terms of quality, which is still aces. Bought lots of ork and chaos stuff from them in the past.
>>
>>51939151
Good luck, doing pos in plastic is bad enough, I'd hate to do them in fucking resin.
>>
>>51939244

Kromlech ork sculpts are god tier though. Spellcrow has interesting stuff but their sculpts seem more Wargames Exclusive quality than Kromlech quality.

This is from someone who has no on hand experience with any of these brands, only review videos, high res photos, and official stock images.
>>
>>51939287
As someone with ork bits from both Spellcrow and Kromlech (and maxmini too) Kromlech is definitely the tops for detail and character, but Spellcrow is almost as good and is nice for variety.
>>
I wanna do something like this. Thoughts?

Thanks. I'm up to 5 teeth broken off the bottom door, and I might just he others off at this point. They're hardly noticeable.

There are some rivets missing from the panels, but that's not bad.

There's broken panel on one of the claws, but it's at least underneath, so it's no so bad. The tips of the claws themselves need some love, though.

ahh, ok thanks

>>51939351
Ridiculous

>>51939409
It's not glued yet but I'm trying to make it work. I don't plan on fucking tons of models so unless I get a good idea built off my master, I won't pursue the project.

Done assembling my sentinel squadron. I liked the idea of each Walker filling a different role in the squadron.

I like the idea of people not posting 5 MB jpgs.

Welp, these may not be the images for you then, bud.

>>51939848
You whiny phoneposting plebs need to fuck off.

I feel like being seen in public on 4chan isnt a risk most people would want to take.
>>
>>51939919
I browse this shit on my laptop during University while taking notes in a second window and having a BatRep running on mute in a third. No need to try and not draw attention in a 50k students university, dince there's always someone weirder around anyway.
>>
>>51939987
I mean being on /tg/ is mostly okay Ive never seen anything on here thats TOO awful at least compared to the rest of 4chan, but I would feel weird about displaying my power level openly.
>>
>>51940229
Eh, I just stay clear of non-blue boards. And I'm just doing what I'm doing and don't exactly care what some strangers think of me, especially when others in the room play Hearthstone on the laptops, watch anime on tablets and even played a fucking digital Poker round across 4 different laptops while their neighbours played UNO.

At that point, browsing 4chan seems normal and orderly.

I just think it looks the best from an aesthetic standpoint.
>>
>>51940618

The middle one looks the best dude. It's perfect. I'm pretty sure that's also how Salamanders looked in older editions. They weren't always this dark.
