If you look at the trends in mtgoldfih, FoW was hovering around the $70 range since April 2011, then it moved to the $80 from April 2013 until April 2014, where it spiked to $100. Then it went down to the $60 when EMA was spoiled, Feb 2016. Oct 2016 it is already back to $80.

I'm not saying it can't go up, but this is what people are actually buying the card for.

mtggoldfish has Volcanic Island at 300ish for almost a year according to their price history. but again, ebay solds are showing 180-200ish for a copy depending on condition.

Legacy staple prices seem to follow this trend; extremely expensive things like this are usually better to pick up on eBay because a lot of stores seem to have no qualms setting prices higher and sitting on them forever

To be fair, Bolt and Go for the Throat are pretty shit in a multiplayer format where everyone wants to go big or wide. In fact, conditional removal is pretty bad at EDH, even when it's efficient.

They are good in 1v1 EDH or french EDH, but those are pretty much Legacy Lite at this point.

So wherever I go, I always advocate "responsible EDH". It's too easy to build a Rhy deck or a Purphoros deck or a Narset turns deck and go to town, or an Oloro enchantment lockdown, but the best EDH games I played were ones where everyone got to cast big ass spells. So there's an unspoken agreement there.

Also regarding your removal argument, the way to go isn't point removal, its board wipes and 2-for-1s, as well as Enchantment hate. There are usually going to be too many threats on the board for point removal spells to be relevant. That's why Damnation has been in need of a reprint in recent times.

You can have mana costs and color identity without lands. Some ideas used in other games are having the option to play normal cards as lands or resources, or having a separate land/resources deck.
The problem with lands is that it's hardly an engaging part of deckbuilding, it's just a best-in-slot, mandatory fee to cast your spells consistently, and on top of that, even the best manabase won't save you from unfortunate shuffling.

Duel Masters was awful and so is that resource system. The choice is only "skill intensive" if you think choosing the least useful card for you at the moment is "skill intensive". Once you've played a matchup even once you know whay cards in your deck don't do well against it and selecting which to pitch for mana is easy.

A good solution was the Vs System option, where basically Instants and Sorceries could be used as "mana" to cast creatures, but you could also cast them even if they were in the resource row. Only creatures and artifacts would get "lost" if used as a resource.
