>comparing Mage to every fictional setting ever

That's not what was happening. The previous discussion was based around the rather blatant fact that the strongest fictional magicians greatly overpower the strongest fictional vampires.

Nothing more than that. Moving on!
>>
What are people's favorite Vampire faction, old or new WoD?

I'm personally fond of the Sabbat. Path of Enlightenment, Viniculum, glorying in the vampiric condition, and fighting Elders and the apocalypse all appeal to me.

>>
>>51958403
You've got a lenient ST if they let you get away with just wooden arrowheads.
>>
>>51958456

>At close range, an arrow from a short bow hits as hard as a small-caliber bullet, and bows are silent, so their combat potential is obvious. Another common use for bows is driving a sharp wooden shaft into a vampire's heart. To do so, the player must roll five successes to hit the heart, and at least three health levels of damage must be inflicted after soak.

From the WtA revised core rulebook.

It might not be intended in CofD but it's supported in WoD.

My point is more that, while it's nebulous just what makes a stake so effective, a wooden arrow just doesn't cut it. Perhaps it's the girth of a stake that makes it work, or some mystical thing that has to do with the nature of a pure stake, but wooden arrows seem like a cop out to me, and it wouldn't fly in my group.

The cereblium of a mage, for all the telecom shit. I'd suggest grabbing one of the techier ones. Freedom Coders is the code name they call themselves I think.

For the full body conversion I'd suggest ripping the brain out of a Promethean and implanting the agent's brain as a replacement. But that might just make your agent a Promethean, but at least it's YOUR Promethean Agent.

>>

Well if you're suicidal You could try to jack a Demon going Loud. Could also work for the optic thermo camo as well. Work off that quantum entanglement.

Getting all this as implants is kind of impractical and could work better with complementary devices. Like just beat up that Potter kid for his cloak of fuck you. and wear therm retardant military gear. In fact I think a good bit of the kit could just be military gear + ghoul blood. So Maybe look over at TFV and kidnap a vampire that has a the weakness that they can't form blood bonds. Then you just milk that puppy till you're done.

Because any limitation you impose on a simple human hunter is going to be overcome by a 2 dot mage so nerfing a human's limited options is irrational.

Staking is thematic, if you want vampires to be better house rule away their aversion to sunlight while you're trimming away everything that makes them vampires.

Archers are already at a disadvantage in the hand gun age. Your vampire is a thinblood if he doesn't notice the beefy amazon walking around with a longbow. He's also a dolt if he can't snap her bowstring with a single attack. Bows ARE for staking. Their cumbersome size and inability to be smuggled is the hilarious trade off.

And sorry if your character stands out in the open and can be ended with a single arrow shaft. I'd assume you'd develop a defense for this. Namely a cuirass or hanging out in night clubs or by having I dunno, celerity.

ALSO

>Vamp chilling in his house.
>Suddenly massive fiery explosion
>Wooden splinters stake Vamp 9 times out of 10

This is probably why vampires hate traveling by ship, those splinters from cannonballs just mow them down as if they were regular sailors.
>>
>>51959642
>you can get accidentally staked by random woodchips

That is not how vampires work and is dumb.
>>
>>51959642

>tfw you will never get penetrated by a beefy amazon
>>
>>51959642
Firstly, If you're using Mage in Hunter, you're doing something wrong, this is why Witch Finders exists. Staking is thematic, that's why it's better saved for stakes fired from crossbows, a rule which exists in CofD. The stake itself is iconic, not an arrow that happens to be wooden.

Lastly, why do you keep implying I'm the vampire? I don't play vampire, it doesn't interest me. You seem to have an issue like I'm some malicious force just because I find using bows to stake iffy.

You have a point in the cumbersome size, and I agree, but I simply don't enjoy the concept of using a bow. Crossbows are cooler thematically, plus have no advantages when compared to bows outside of stake firing, provides it's exclusive. And for practicality the stake firing zip-guns mentioned in one of the Hunter books work wonders for stealth.

Although I wonder if they're still human because they still remember their lives.

How would one even capture a Demon? We know that arrows totally wreck Fanger's shit both RAW and RAI, as do most wooden objects, but what can a Demon even do?

shurgs and this is where I have no idea.

Since demons can drift in and out of their covers. You'd have to tag down their Covers, which is possible but difficult. (In fact it might just be easier to go after their kids) Luckily most obvious demons have tells, environmental, behavioral and physical. Speaking tics, water running uphill. Family histories not adding up. Which makes them more prone to going loud. Which is bad because the GM sends out hitmarks after it.

Loud Demons are super tough. So tactically I would suggest taking a ripper to one of their arms or mechanical parts then run like hell, hope the GM's angels take care of the rest.

As for which part. I'd bet the "Horns" might be the transmitting and broadcasting signal wave they use for transformation. which would be the physical manifestation of their entanglement powers

Super felony if you're searched.
Bows are legal everywhere.

If you're talking about stakes being iconic as in they steak things down, then so do arrows. Stories abound of one arrow staking two people together.

I'm sure you'd agree a Roman Scorpion can hurl stake sized bolts, but for some reason a crossbow can stake a vamp but an arrow can't.

Then you can just stab them with the arrow, no bow needed.

Depends on the country. S'not like Europe is one gigantic country with completely identical laws across all borders.

>>51961557
>And, according to Bloodlines at least, they can have sex.

In Revised, vampires rarely had sex, because there was an overarching theme of grim-derp "herp-a-derp, sex isn't grimdark enough, it has to be rape or it's not allowed". So, it could happen (though vampires not on high-humanity had to spend a lot of blood to let their bodies get erections and get the "juices" flowing again), but it was still pretty rare.

In V20, that's been changed: vampires can, and often do, have sex now. If nothing else, many use it as a great way to feed on mortals.

>>51961557
>Indeed, they have no bodily fluids BUT blood.

Close, but not 100% true: a famed kindred doctor, Netchurch, proved that vampires still produce saliva (which helps them close wounds caused by their fangs) and retain their ocular fluids: that's why not every vampire's eyes are blood-red.

Most of their other fluids (tears, sweat, urine, semen, etc.) *are* made up of blood.

>>51961557
>Does that mean you can diablerize a vampire by sucking his dick?

Theoretically, yes. Though probably only if said vampire was using Blush of Health/Life to pump blood into his dick.

I mean, the Giovanni (both male and female) have been stated to sometimes use oral sex as a way to feed their ghouls.

That will be unfortunate, but unsurprising. Dave's definitely been far less active as of late, likely having real life issues dominate his time. It's probably why the Mage FAQ hasn't been released, nor have new Deviat spoilers. Add his very annoyed response on rpg.net and elsewhere about the ZakS controversy, he probably felt it was time to move on.

I'm curious if he leaves the role of developer if he still intends to write for the various gamelines. He's one of the most prolific CofD authors, and if he leaves, he absence will be noticed and missed.

Yes, even the magefags and the werewolves that want to fuck everything.

Running CofD, my players are a bunch of regular mortals thrown into the supernatural, gradually becoming hunters. One of them has an aspiration to cure their infertility, what are some fucked up ways I could offer them a supernatural solution to this, with a price? Barring the obvious deal with a demon.

>>
>>51963452

It was Hill, Young (his partner), and a White Wolf writer who got more or less driven out of the industry after a Zak related controversy. There are others, but those three are directly connected to White Wolf/OPP.

Folks are mad and will continue to be mad over ZakS, because even if you don't think there's a problem with him specifically, there's enough potential problems around his hiring and what that means for the company's closest licensor and, so far, the only company to actually make money on any WW IP at the moment. We know how close Dracula is to the company, so this isn't some kind of corporate blindness. While the narrative itself fell into yet another Zak Trap (unless you knew that Zak accused the creator of Monsterhearts of pedophilia once, you're not going to put together that the political quizzing Trans serial killer just might be named after her), the issue is that Dracula didn't vet his freelancers properly and now we're going to see more content delays. That Dracula probably just hired ZakS because they're Facebook friends is icing on the cake.

Dave is not going to tell us anything, at least not until OPP makes some official announcement. Even if he's choosing to not develop or author any more, he wouldn't want to burn any bridges with RichT or nWW in case he might want to return.

Dave is also a very fickle and angry god, and not telling us about the current state of affairs probably amuses him or he considers it punishment for our myriad of transgressions.

I hate bring up mage stuff here because annoying assholes who spam nonsense but is it possible to become an archmaster without knowing it? I donlt mean gamewise I mean character a explores the temenos as much as he can. visits a forgotten place thats about to die, He's gnosis 6 space/mind five through series of events he figures out that by making an infectious sympathetic link he can make one. Finds the quintessence, casts the spell, ends up successfully passing the trials. Realizes only after that he's now an archmaster.

The logic is that it's wood, which is the really important part of a stake being effective against a vampire.

Imperial Mysteries suggests that one does not accidentally become an archmaster.

It is a very deliberate and calculated act to attempt to breach the Threshold.

Also, the prerequisites to attempt archmastery require more than just Gnosis 6 and second degree mastery, and even requires the expenditure of substantial Arcane XP.
>>
>>51964955

It sounds more like someone isn't housebroken.

I made a character for a Boston campaign from the book. Haven't had a chance to play him, because short of running a Boston campaign myself I'm not likely to find one, and I'm no good at GMing.

The concept is a Moros Mystagogue who has ancestral and familial ties to Boston's Awakened community, but wasn't raised there. The goals for him were to dig through the history of the area to learn about where he came from. Speaking and dealing with ghosts, looking for ruins of the old colonial Mage strongholds, that sort of thing. If you read the book then you know that means getting tied up in conspiracies and cannibal cults and Seer shenanigans.

Someone with The Goblin Midwife contract ( Goblin Markets Page 25)

>The stories of infertile couples seeking out the supernatural in order to have children have their basis in fact. This Contract allows the changeling to act as that go-between, blessing the subject with a temporary increase in fertility. The drawback is twofold, however. First, the child or children conceived with the aid of this Contract will bear some sort of faerie curse. Second, the character using the Contract suffers a mild backlash of twisted love; a former or current paramour develops a strong antipathy for the character. If the character using the Contract has no lovers past or present who are not already bitter and resentful towards him, then the curse will fall on the next object of his affections. He cannot use this Contract again until the curse has been expiated.

Young Neo. The reason a stake through the heart stops vampires and a twig does not is easy to explain.

To demonstrate I have taken the liberty of steal these pigs from the local farmer's market, and extracting their organs. They tasted exactly as you would expect, like porkrins. If I still had a working digestive track I would vomit their blood. But you can't always have Doctorates. Oh how I miss my university tenure. But I digress.

You can see I have peeled back the skin on these two, and cracked the ribs within. And you can see the heart underneath has been exposed. Normally a stake would have to crack the bones here or here to get at the heart, but We already know and understand the hardness of bone verse wood. It's a documented science, so I shall not retread a known quantity, as it is not apart of the question.

*First pig is impaled by a stake* This one I call Link

The Stake ruptures all four of the heart's chambers, while a toothpick is too flimsy and breaks when forced into the skin or organ.

*Second pig heart is covered in toothpicks all over it* This one I call Zelda

Therefore due to empirical evidence, I can concluded this argument, that not only is the wood important but also the rupturing of the four heart chambers. Link are you paying attention? The four chambers are where the curse is metaphysically localized. It has to pump the blood through the dead flesh and revitalize it. Stopping that function is critical to stopping an undead.

I'd wager that those snake fiends have also come to this realization as well, and are able to translocate their hearts while not stopping the heart from pumping. But they fall when you rupture their four heart chambers as well.

Now for a hands on demonstration I'm going to need you to lie on the table. Just for a moment

A lot of the things in the book have potential, and I like most of the characters. Playing a Moros Pharmcist who Awakened in a car accident that took the life of her husband and unborn child. Husband's ghost is her familiar but molded him to look like his child self so she can experience motherhood. How does one use matter to make potions?
>>
>>51967595
Rolls eyes, Neonate if you're not going to take this experiment seriously There is no point in it.

*Shoots neo in the heart*

See the wood does not stay in the four chambers. Therefore a vampire's heart would knit itself back. Wood acts as a clotting and blocking agent against reforming of the heart. And the toothpick as already been proven not structurally sound enough to hold shape or pierce the necessarily organs.

The cases of exploding splinters have exaggerated to make the splinters seem small. but in the documented cases these 'splinters' have prove to be roughly foot length. The force of an explosion i.e. the cannonball ripping through the hull, fractures the wooden beam. which is roughly 3 yards in length at least which then creates these smaller but still large enough to stake, roughly about one foot. And that piece of wood then ruptures the four chambers after breaking through bone and fleshly layers. And undead too stupid and too unlucky to not to take precautions against it. Young Neo if you will not research these cases on your own at least understand the empirical evidence in front of you

I believe such temporary enchanted items will be included in the upcoming Signs of Sorcery.

Tome of the Mysteries has a chapter on Awakened alchemy, but truthfully I found it kind of underwhelming. To summarize it, you would use Matter and another arcanum to create a base substance that you would imbue with a spell from that arcanum. For potions I think you would need Matter and Life, and I do remember that for bombs you need Matter and Forces.

What makes demons and mummies strong?
>>
>>51971083
>What makes demons and mummies strong?
Mummies wake up at Powerstat 10 and Demons can 'Go Loud' blowing one of their covers in order to go Powerstat 10 for a scene and heal all their damage and gain access to the full range of 'affinity' powers as well as all of the templates 'big' powers, Exploits.
>>
>>51971083
>>51971114
They can go full endgame.
When a demon goes loud or a mummy first wakes up, it's on part with a vampire or werewolf with a maxed power stat, full disciplines/renown, every (or at least most) devotions/gifts, etc.
>>
>>51957776
so umm..what figure is that?
>>
>>51971114
And then you got those genius high-Gnosis mages that can prepare so precisely well that not even freshly awakened mummies or demons going loud are going to manage survival when they're in play.

Throw in the world-bending Seekers and it's no longer a trinity of powers, but now a one-sided stomp in the heavy favor of Awakening.
Thank god for the Pax Arcanum, something Ascension dearly needed.

These three game-lines should only ever scarcely be used in crossover. Although I do figure mixing both Mage & Demon has great potential. Mummy has never fit into my view, no matter how thorough I read into it.
>>
>>51970858
Best vidya game ever made.
>>
>>51971525
I wouldn't say that, but the scenario writing is not bad, and it's nice to see the jump from Dark Ages to modern, even if it doesn't seem like there's ANY challenge to the game at all.
>>
>>51971421
The issue with Mage and balance is that the gain in utility and power is not linear with the number of arcana you have access too.
>>
>>51971402
Unless you got a couple spare burner covers you'll almost never want to go loud and demons are surprisingly squishy. So if you're going loud you better murder everybody and get out quick.
>>
>>51971818
>Not collecting at least 1 'spare' low rank Cover to burn for emergencies.

Is it though?
>>
>>51970093

Because some people just want to play mage and dont care for a game about demigods snapping their finger and solving everything with mages slapped on it.
>>
>>51972456
But this has been this way since ascension were they are even stronger. Like there are other games and other systems for something weaker. Not like it matters most early magic is just a lot of shortcutting then raw bruteforcing. If you are having an issue maybe learning the system and responding appropriately would be better.

Mage the awakening has always been about people with incredibly strong powers fighting against equally strong enemies. If you want something weaker just use proximi or hedge mages.
>>
Hey tg, i am planning on running my first awakening game. My idea is that players start with a cap in maximum 2 arcanum to let the player who havent and probably wont read the book get used to their arcanums.

I am not using no other splat as neither pcs or npcs. No archmastery and player would only be allowed mastery in any arcanum by the last arc of the game. That said i read in previous threads that mages will never face any difficulty unless i constantly and relentlessly attack them with 10+ enemies and things like that.

Is that true? Even with all the limitations i am putting should i be worry that the pcs will never face any difficulty?
>>
>>51972640
There's no way your game will last long enough for you to worry about mastery, let alone archmastery.
>>
How do I third impact?
>>
>>51972640
Powers don't get strong until 3 and that's just strong. 4-5 is where the powers get absurd. Do not bash them with super strong enemies until you understand the game and powers. There are a few really strong two dot powers like psychic domination but even at max gnosis and arcana for a character at that level without a rote making that spell hit anything moderately strong is hard. Mages have some serious fire power but it's not front loaded.

Max gnosis for the character which is at best 3 even at 3+3 mind six dice, between resistance and the chances of getting even three dice is bad on an 8 or above. You'll be able to make a normal sleeper kill themselves you won't be able to do the same with the vampire cultist.
>>
>>51972869
Sorcerer is oWoD. Essentially a watered down mage with a more linear magic system and nowhere near as powerful.

There are similar things in nWoD/CofD, but that's not one of them.

>>51972928
Well yeah. Gnosis is honestly the best power stat in nwod because of how much it governs. At ten all your improvised spell casting gives you 10 to all spells. It's also tied to legacies and praxsis. But at start most mages are going to be shit at improvised spell casting. Even ritual spell casting sucks because you'll eventually have no dice to roll if you go for too long.

>>51972713
Thanks for the clarification, inwas just curious because people here always compare mage agaisnt other splat but not much how it stands alone as a game.

For example i read paradox sounds good on paper but in play it only relevant if i am throwing everything but the kitchen sink at them.
>>
>>51972916
>Essentially a watered down mage with a more linear magic system and nowhere near as powerful

Step One:Find Demon.
Step Two:Help Demon capture other Demon.
Step Three:Form Gadget extraction.
Step Four:Repeat.
>>

Thank god my players never buy the power stats.
>>
>>51973035

Unfortunately the rules of sorcerers are badly written and brucatto doesnt want a sorcerer 20th because magic is spelled magick
>>
>>51973025
The issue with paradox is that it was changed from vulgar covert to reach based. Basically adding on to a spell too many times makes it invoke paradox. Unless players need to add more paradox early game anyway doesn't come much into play. That doesn't mean it has no teeth. Just that it's only really going to start biting when a character needs to think on their feet or cast something stronger. If you want paradox coming into play I would play with reach the issue is that the system is so delicate in it's state that it could end up being punishing.

>>51973103
That's unfortunate.
>>
>>51973035
Sorcerer only goes up to 6 dots as well, much like Werewolf. Not as wanked, and exceptionally slow to pull of effects.

So no 10 dot "I'm going DC/Marvel mode" Discipline/Sphere equivalents for them.
Not that 6-10 dot Disciplines are unusable, as they're far weaker than the arch-Spheres and don't go beyond the borders of the earth in terms of scale.

>>
>>51973316
Yeah but you really want gnosis it's such big fact though having too much makes it harder to deal with paradox, it's such an advantage but i guess they can find out the hard way.
>>
>>51973381

Can you raise gnosis with regular xp? I though you can only use arcane xp for gnosis and arcanums
>>
>>51973381
The increased paradox risk is an issue until it isn't. In the latter parts of the game you can reliably get exceptional successes on spell casts and side step a lot of paradox by just throwing mana at the problem and recuperating it from the exceptional success.

Assuming of course you're not using your exceptional success to blast past withstand.
>>
>>51973198
>archspheres
What can they do that makes them so powerful?
>>
>>51973471
Gnosis can be raised with either regular or arcane xp.
>>
>>51973488
the exceptional success caveats are probably the biggest issues that shouldn't have been added at least they should have been reduced.
>>
>>51973512

>>
>>51973589 huh i just reread that. i would just make it so that mana per paradox doesn't get refunded. i haven't gotten an exceptional success wo i skimmed it but i think all mana is just a liberal interpretation.
>>
>>51973790

Not really, it turns the game in a "one hit kill" and/or forces the DM to make the NPC idiots and not use all their tools at their disposal to give them a fucking chance.

It even forces PCs to permashield themselves if they can, which in turn makes most normal threat null as a side effect and forces the DM hand to make the threats the PCs are countermeasuring agaisnt as the ONLY threats he can use.

Yeah.
To TL;DR it for >>51974960:
>Documentary roughly states that WW took the gaming and made it more mainstream and less 'nerd, geek, outcast' culture
>Documentary talks about WW's influence on other things such as goth scene/clubs/etc.
>RPG.net goes insane refuting any and all parts of the documentary, such as games that weren't D&D that predated WW games
>RPG.net is going on about 'WW says you're not mature if you play elfgames'.

So it's essentially a big ass echo chamber with people trying to put in a little bit of perspective on 'Hey, these are PEOPLE'S FUCKING OPINIONS and EXPERIENCES,' and also everyone is ignoring the fact that WW had a huge market visibility comparable really ONLY to D&D in many areas.
>>
>>51975112

A lot of it is discussion of new media and ww's biz plans.

>>
White Wolf is coming across as totally pretentious, inept and incapable of doing anything right.

They seem to forget that the 90s are long over.
>>
>>51975242
Is there anything concrete? Because I really do doubt that White Wolf will expand as much as it wants to. For example, I don't think there will be a Netflix series. Future video games will depend on how Werewolf is received, and from the info on that front, it isn't too promising.

Counting chickens before they hatch, and all that.
>>
>>51975355

Given how these past couple of years have been working out, this will actually end up meaning that they're totally going to succeed and America's gonna have tons of Eurolarps in five years.
>>

>>51975478

This seems to be the time when sure bets for success and failure end up becoming the total and complete opposite. Last year's World Series, this year's Super Bowl, this year's Oscars Best Picture winner, that sort of thing.

In times like these, I could totally see White Wolf essentially stumbling its way back to success and a 90s gaming revival in all aspects, somehow.
