Yes. Let's all start the Caine vs Archmage argument again.

It's not like we haven't all already come to a generalized consensus as to whom would win such an encounter.

>Caine vs Archmage
>Archmage wins
>God is angry
>God vs Archmage
>Outcome uncertain

Unless the authors themselves step down, we have absolutely no way of knowing who would win.
It's the same with having the Triat fight God. Both are supreme in their respective settings, as are the Archmages/Oracles and the extradimensional consciousness (post-ascension) in Ascension.

Text based rpgs do a much better job of immersing you, in my opinion. Audio ones constantly remind you that you're listening to other dorks play a game.

I like listening to dorks play a game, because given the opportunity I'd be right there with them, dorkin' it up, forgettin' how to roll a foot chase or initiative. as for starts and stops they can add gravity to surprises and hard choices, though I do agree that um's and uh's can get a bit eh to listen to when the players get together to bring their characters to life it adds more than using imagination to guess at how something should be read.

Caine was cursed by a character inspired by the judeo-christian god. I also don't recall this character granting Caine immunity to magic.

As for Tremere, dude was an idiot. He wanted all the pros of vampirism with none of the cons, and he fucked it up horribly. They didn't willingly give up the spheres for a shitty half-existence. They're a prime example of what happens when mages get full of themselves.

It's a piece of fiction. Every character depicted within is just that, a character. And yes, it is "inspired by", in this case. Or have you forgotten that biblical Caine wasn't actually a vampire and that those characters share a universe with beings and aspects that don't line up with the irl bible?

It's fiction, full of made-up characters. The irl bible is not 100% canon to the WoD. Get over it.

Can love blossom between a magefag and a werefag?
>>
>>51977083
>No one is dumb enough to label Caine as an Archmage's equal.

Magefags, on the other hand, are dumb enough to think that people are actually saying that, when time and again, Vampire fans have stressed that no we're not.

The thing is that if you have Caine, you also have the Judeo-Christian God, or at least a close facsimile, which even Mage puts at the absolute highest tier of power in M20.

The reason why an Archmage has trouble with Caine has nothing to do with Caine himself. It's the issue that God Himself has said that he has Caine's back if anyone tries to hurt him.

Magefags have at best tried to claim that God is just a very powerful Archmage. Well, fair enough: then God is a very powerful Archmage. What Archmage wants to fuck with another Archmage, who is powerful and ancient enough to be behind every single monotheistic myth?

>>51977391
>How are Archmages not the strongest things playable in the oWoD?
>playable

To be honest, I question this, by virtue of the fact that it doesn't seem fun at all to play as one, and as such I question whether or not anyone actually would.

An archmage is playable in the abstract, but who'd want to actually be running one in real life?

>which even Mage puts at the absolute highest tier of power in M20

The ascended "Godhead" that mages unite with upon actual ascension, might not actually be the same being that cursed Caine, if we go by previously published material. It might be something on an entirely different scale.
>>
>>51977610
All according to keikaku my friend.
>>
>>51977546
Vampfags have totally been wanking Caine just as hard as Magefags have been wanking Archmasters. You apparently haven't been here for all the mindless repetitions of "YOU FUCKING LOSE" and those vampfags that argued that Caine can make up what Disciplines he wants and have total mastery of them, essentially making him a god unto himself. There were other, more mindless arguments, like how Antediluvians and Caine could possibly remove sunlight and their thirst for blood with Disciplines as well.

Don't try to rationalize one side when they're both fucking stupid.
>>
>>51977598

Again. It's like trying to start a Triat x God double-decker boxing match. It's just not going to work.

I'm honestly amazed by the select few Anons that believe Caine actually has a shot against an Arete 9-10 Archmage / Exemplar / Oracle.

Prime 6 can already remove Vampirism and God-driven curses / blessings, effectively deleting all access to the Disciplines and Caine's seven-fold shield / curse, which is nowhere near as powerful as people seem to think it is.

>>51977633
Well, Caine CAN make up Disciplines on the spot, or at least it is theorized that he can.

And Antediluvians with Fortitude 10 actually can tank sunlight. Zapathasura did. It took 3 Technocracy satellites focusing the sunlight into many thousands of times its normal intensity to kill him (while he was starving, after having fought 3 demigods for 3 days straight and had just tanked 2 nukes to the face on both the physical and spiritual planes).

Normal sunlight? Didn't even phase Zapathasura, even in his weakened state. I doubt the Technocracy's satellite trick would have worked without the leadup, too.

And Zapathasura is in the lower tier of the Antediluvians. Only Tremere and Giovanni are weaker. He had nothing on, say, Absmiliard, or Tzimisce. And Caine was two steps beyond THEM.

Which is not to say that Caine could take an Archmage (without God's help)...but I pity anything lesser than an Archmage who thinks that he can do anything to Caine.
>>

>Prime 6 can already remove Vampirism and God-driven curses / blessings

I refuse to believe that it can do so without allowing some kind of check to resist it. And with stats of 10 in everything (by virtue of WW's own rules for making ancient vampires as outlined in Children of the Night), Caine can probably resist anything.
>>
>>51977698

*sigh* Again, please review >>51976108

A sufficiently powerful Archmage will annihilate Caine, yes, but then it turns into something far more blurred and nonsensical.

They win the battle against the first-and-strongest vampire known to human history, but they then pile unto something that is entirely senseless and without a definitive conclusion.

Technically, the Antediluvians equal Caine in their area of speciality. Caine's forte is his blood and extensive Disciplines, which he may or may not be able to improvise reliably.

That's all I needed to read. It's not like this wasn't always the case with True Magick. If the Technocracy could take down Ravnos without Archmagic, weakened or not, I highly doubt Caine would be able to resist, even if he did so a bit better than the crispy (and quite dead) gypsy.

Well yeah, like the previous bubble gum example posted a couple threads down.

You could, by RAW (via Charm mechanics found in Forged by Dragon's Fire), blow up the universe by chewing candy. In this case, blowing a luscious pink bubble and popping it.

Mind you, not all Wonders are broken. Just Artifacts (which only requires a single success, no matter what) and Charms.

It's books like IM that ensured DaveB became developer of Mage 2e.

Quite a while ago, Dave mentioned that he mostly formulated an update for the applicable parts of IM from 1e to 2e. I would gladly pay for such material, even if it was only a small PDF-only supplement.

I bet if Mage 2e had a Kickstarter, there would have been a lot more promised 2e material, and much of it would have already been released.

Imperial spells still require Quintessences each time they are cast. It's a major limitation on the use of such spells.

However, archmasters can always use Imperial Factors when casting, and along with their huge dice pools and other abilities, make them crazy scary even without resort to level 6+ Arcana.

>Quintessence

One of the reasons why Imperial Mysteries is a better system. It takes a long time to acquire such resources (Even though the effects are quire permanent, barring Dynamics) and is always cast as a ritual.

Ascension Archmasters could do their shit at the snap of their fingers, if they planned a accordingly beforehand.

Of course, 10 dot Assumption grants permanent Transfiguration, effectively erasing the need for Quintessence and the capability to do whatever you want (with your specific Arcana, of course) at the snap of a finger, no more rituals needed.

The only thing limiting them is sensory range.

DaveB, if you're still around, would it be possible for a mage to have 2 shadow names (and the merit for each of them) ?

More common than not. Dabbling with the ghoul families is more of an elitist thing, and even those who do it are likely looking out for talented individuals who fit their ideals, no matter what background they might have.

Most Sabbat is still glorified rabble, Tzimisce included, and their rules aren't as strict about embracing new vampires. They might be picky, but when they find someone who is Tzimisce-material in their own personal opinion they are likely to embrace him.

So check this out. Last weekend my friends came over and spotted my VtM book on the table and inquired about it. Note that neither of them have played a tabletop RPG before. I gave them a brief explanation of what it was and while I was making dinner for them (I am an awesome host) they read through it a bit. The following weekend we are watching anime and hanging out and drinking a little, and one of them asks if they could roll a Vampire and play the game. I spent 20 minutes throwing together a few NPCs and a basic plot, and then helped them with character creation. We played a session on the fly packed with roleplaying and some combat and they really got into it.....

I haven't played VtM in years and I have *never* run a game until now. But they are both stoked and I am writing up NPCs but I don't have a plot for them or any hooks or anything even! I want to continue to make this experience positive for them.....suggestions? Adventure hooks?

The Bloodlines Malk comes close to being a fishmalk, but pulls it off by being creepy, acting reasonably, and having genuinely clever insights. Note- playing Bloodline Malk right now- the patch plus adds some great elements- creepy whispers and all the power lines twist like serpents in an invisible breeze- genuinely disturbing. Bloodlines Malk is good, but on the tabletop he'd need a great player or it'd be awful.

That could work. I sorta wanted them fighting the Camarilla, but that could be pt.2- instead it could start off dealing with the awfulness of the Kuei-Jin mixed in with some Anarch being ineffectual. I want the first segment to really hammer in the Sabbat as being valid- my original plan was to throw them against an Elder (along with a ton of other shovelheads, several of which would be player made backup characters in case their first characters bite it) who'd deal inhuman destruction before going down, really hammer in the idea of Elders as being awful and deadly pawns of the antediluvians. Wouldn't say Space. A Shadow Name's just something you call yourself - the Merit represents it starting to resonante Supernally over time, such that you can use it as a Yantra. I would say Prime. Possibly archmaster-y.

Yes. In fact, you have to, because you can't as shit touch someone through a scrying window.

So - "counts as remote casting" does not mean "counts as using sympathetic range", though the two often go together. It means that you're casting on something you can't see in real time in front of you, which costs an extra Reach. Using a scrying window is no different to casting on someone you can see over CCTV.

When you're not in a Cover, they don't exist. People they know will miss them, their house will be empty, and you'll eventually get a Compromise for that Cover.

The Mailman's route might get covered by a co-worker, but his boss and co-workers will still wonder where he is, unless you switch to him for a few minutes to call in sick.
Same goes for the business man; people will wonder where you are, but as a boss, you'll probably get a bit of leeway(assuming you're a CEO or something like that).

So i have weird question guys.

How do you deal with modern times in modern nights?

Back in the 00' and later even when Requiem was brand new it was kind of neat to put Vampire in current timeline.

Now with all these modern shit we have, jewbooks, drones, modern electronics and completely new internet culture more an more its starts to resemble fucking Shadowrun.
Just add Orcs, and god damn me i did that to once with the Changeling. So my question is do you also struggle with it, any tips?

Dave, have you written something for every nWOD / CofD gameline?

-The Strix creating the clans like they did with the Julii;
-If you consider the theory that nWoD is the sequel to oWoD, Caine somehow surviving the reboot of the universe, at least as a concept, and then spreading the curse by proxy;
-One or more (G)god(s) cursing or blessing individuals to become vampires, like what may have happened with Longinus, Dracula and quite a few other less important vampires;
-Random supernatural creatures following a convergent path of evolution.

They're not remotely spooky as a result. Because they're fucking owls. Which have nothing to do with vampires at all.

Two mages:

Technocrat: He straight up doesn't believe in magic. His power derives from complete faith in efficient bureaucracy. He doesn't perform "rituals," he files a form and the powers that be get shit done.

Mage: Power derives from poorly interpreting Wikipedia scientific and mathematical articles. He can teleport because he "knows" he can view the world as a set of disjoint human-sized spaces, and under the discrete metric all these spaces are separated by unit distance.

>hat the fuck were you thinking when you added, exceptional successes return all mana and completely negate withstand

An Exceptional Success can return all mana plus one, ignore Withstand OR other listed options. ES's don't provide all the bonuses, you need to pick one.

In any event, even with Praxes, you're unlikely to regularly get ES bonuses until you have a large dice pool from both high Gnosis and high Arcana ratings. Mages with both high Gnosis and Arcana are damn well supposed to friggin' terrifying, and the ES rule simply acts as to reinforce this circumstance.

>>51984177
I means all the opponents have to magically have a shielding spell for every arcana. It's unplayable because the only way to defend against other masters is to have the same arcana. There's nothing to do at that point. Either you steam roll or get steam rolled the only way to make a game work is to completely remove that power.or make powers where pretty much tantamount to removing it.
>>
>>51982712
It's gotten easier to set things in the CURRENT YEAR. All those technological innovations are just improvements on existing tech, not major innovations. Sure, more people are getting LCD tans, but that just means they are paying less attention to the shadows. Head outside major cities or the 1st world and things haven't changed at all. When people turn their news sources into echo chambers, they become easier to manipulate and hide things from.
All the new tech you are worried about relies on electricity and signal strength. Cut one and people start to panic.

Remember, the World of Darkness is our world where the shadows are darker, longer and things go bump in the night. Think about how things could be much worse, and in the World of Darkness, they already are.
>>
>>51984398

This.
>>
>>51984398
>I means all the opponents have to magically have a shielding spell for every arcana.

Or, a modicum of proficiency in just Prime.

Also, relying on an ES is a risky endeavor. ES are hardly guaranteed, and a mage would need to limit spell factors in order to maximize their dice pool.
>>
>>51984316
>So have you talk with your Other brother lately?

Wait a minute - WHAT?
>>
>>51984669
It's 3 successes with a praxis. There is no risk. Just choose the most powerful spell. OR a 2-3 point spell like psychic domination that gives you 3-4 free reach.
>>
>>51984693

Reach has nothing to do with whether you can garner an ES.

The spell will also have to be fairly limited as Spell Factors reduce the dice pools needed to obtain those extra successes.

Note also that you cannot combine a Praxis and Rote.
>>
>>51984443

>Remember, the World of Darkness is our world where the shadows are darker...
I played WoD for years so no need to tell me what it is about.

>All the new tech you are worried about relies on electricity and signal strength
Don't get me wrong, the tech alone gives amazing possibilities. One of my players is a Model Instagram slash Cult Leader. So lot'sa playing field to turn that shit upsidedown into a very dark mirror of our world.
Its just not the same.
Fighting Uncertanity, Gender and Identity politics and Google,NSA and Jewbook overlords isn't really Gothic/Horror anymore.

>It's gotten easier to set things in the CURRENT YEAR.

...and that is what im trying to say, not for me, at least in my sessions the more tech oriented we are the more that mix of mysticism and technology starts to resemble Shadowrun and less Vampire.

I lost my edge and immersion and this is possible as i don't consider myself really good GM, or perhaps it its really a problem.

With nWoD it isn't that noticable but playing oWoD now is just kind of... weird.
>>
>>51984742
For every dot past the necessary arcana you get one additional free reach. You gain one at start meaning you just cast a praxis unmaking spell hit three successes and viola enemy gone unless they have an extra shielding spell that can't be bypassed.

>>51984780

Reach does nothing to increase or decrease a pc's spellcasting dice pool, and thus has no effect on ES's.
>>
>>51984866
No but you can get about 15 dice with a yantra +5 arcana +5 gnosis even 3 gnosis is 13 dice. more than enough to get enough for an exceptional success.
>>
>>51984843

>anon still hasn't posted artowork for his thicc Coraxfu
>>
>>51984897

You cannot have Gnosis 3 and Arcana 5. Mastery requires a Gnosis of 5.

>>51984780 was discussing using an Unmaking praxis as an attack spell. Under such conditions, a mage will almost certainly not have the time or opportunity to employ more than his one reflexive Yantra.

Most likely, a mage will need an applicable praxis, and have a dice pool of 11-12. If using a high level spell, he will probably need to spend Reach for instant casting, sensory range, etc, with the incumbent high Paradox risk of a high Gnosis mage. In order to maintain a statistically sufficient dice pool, he will not be able to use additional Spell Factors to deal with circumstances like multiple targets, increased duration, or extra potency in the event he doesn't roll an ES.

The discussion is clearly veering into useless featureless white room one-on-one battles that do not model actual play.

Simply, do master mages, particularly those with applicable praxes and rotes, have certain advantages? Absolutely, as this was the design intent. Are these advantages nearly as game-breaking as some suggest in actual play? Not really, particularly against the high-level adversaries that such a master mage should be encountering.

The advantage already existed before adding an effect that just breaks the game. Yeah in some cases you won't have all 15 possible dice but paradox isn't that big of a deal if you just go for instant casting and sensory. Praxis and ignore withstand ability are just a broken combination and even outside of white room test it is an issue. You can pretend that's not the case but it is.

That mage better hope he's not facing more than one opponent, or the resulting Spell Factor penalties could prove fatal.

In any event, I'm hardly suggesting that master mages who happen to have a praxis useful for a particular situation and a advantageous environment are not scary and powerful. I just don't believe the ES rule is as game-breaking in actual play as you and some others suggest.
