It is 751 years since the Battle of Benevento was fought near Benevento, in present-day Southern Italy. It was waged between the troops of Charles of Anjou and Manfred of Sicily. Manfred's defeat and death resulted in the capture of the Kingdom of Sicily by Charles, effectively ending the rule of the Hohenstaufen in the Italian Peninsula. The Papacy had long been in conflict with the Imperial house of Hohenstaufen over their rule in Italy. At the time of the battle, the Hohenstaufen ruler in the Kingdom of Sicily (which included Sicily and southern Italy) was Manfred, illegitimate son of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. While the rightful heir to the kingdom was Frederick's legitimate grandson Conradin, he was young and safely across the Alps in Bavaria. Taking advantage of a false rumor of Conradin's death, Manfred had usurped the throne in 1258. Pope Urban IV determined to wrench the Kingdom from him, and in 1263, concluded a secret treaty with Charles of Anjou, giving him the Sicilian throne.

Charles reached Rome in 1265, but was temporarily halted by financial embarrassments. Manfred, however, did not take the field against him until January 1266, when Charles' main army had crossed the Alps. Alarmed by desertions among his followers and fearing further treachery, Manfred sought to bring Charles to battle as swiftly as possible. Charles attempted to turn Manfred's position at Capua by a perilous crossing of the Apennines which wrecked his supply line; but Manfred had intelligence of his move and lay in a strong position across the River Calore, crossed only by one bridge.

Charles had divided his cavalry into three "battles". The infantry and the first battle, consisting of 900 Provençals were at the front, commanded by Hugh of Mirepoix, Marshal of France, and Philip of Montfort, Lord of Castres. Behind them were the second battle, which consisted of 400 Italians and 1,000 men of Languedoc and central France. Charles would command the second battle in person. Behind them, the third battle consisted of about 700 men from the county of Flanders under Gilles II de Trasignies, Constable of France, and Robert III of Flanders.

Manfred had adopted similar dispositions. His Saracen archers were in the fore. Behind them was the first battle, 1,200 German mercenaries armed in coats of plate (a novelty at the time), commanded by his cousin Giordano d'Anglano and Galvano of Anglona. The second battle consisted of the Italian mercenaries, about 1,000, and 300 Saracen light horse, commanded by his uncle Galvano Lancia. The third battle, numbering 1,400, were the feudatories of the Kingdom, under Manfred's personal command.

The battle began in the morning, when Manfred advanced his Saracens (archers and a few light cavalry) across the bridge to skirmish. They drove off Charles' infantry, but were put to flight by his Provençal cavalry. Rashly, Manfred's first battle crossed the bridge and counter-charged. At first, the German mercenaries seemed unstoppable; all blows rebounded from their armor plates, and Charles was forced to commit his second battle. The Germans continued to advance, but then the French discovered that the new plate armor did not protect the armpits when the arm was lifted to strike. The Germans were swiftly broken.

The tide of battle now rapidly turned against Manfred. His troops were forced to defile across the single bridge over the Calore to reach the field. By the time his second battle had crossed the bridge, Charles had ordered his third battle to charge them on both flanks and they were swiftly destroyed. Upon the defeat of the Italians, most of the nobles in Manfred's third battle deserted him, leaving only the king and a few faithful followers. After exchanging the royal surcoat with his friend Tebaldo Annibaldi, Manfred and his followers charged into the fray and were slain. The narrow bridge acted as a bottleneck, causing many to be killed or captured. Only 600 of the 3,600 horsemen escaped.

The destruction of Manfred's army marked the collapse of Hohenstaufen rule in Italy. The remainder of the Kingdom of Sicily was conquered almost without resistance. Settled in his new kingdom, Charles could await the coming of Conradin, the last hope of the Hohenstaufen, in 1268, and meet him at the Battle of Tagliacozzo.

This is a pretty classic medieval battle definitely worth bringing to the tabletop. The role of the bridge is hugely important and the player who exploits it the best will probably win the day.

I've got some provincials, their canoes and plenty of civilians in my 'to paint' list.

Then it should be on to scenery...
>>
Great. Now I want to paint pike blocks. And I don't even have any game to use them for. Nor any models for it, really, or a FLGS to get models for it from...
>>
>>51898695
Welcome to my world.

Though if you have no local store (like most of us I'd bet) then just order online. Same for games.
>>
>>51898796
I do order online. It's just that there's a delivery delay, so I can't go out right now, buy some pikemen, glue them together and start painting in a few hours.

Ah, well you should have prepared for the urge ahead of time then.

I think I've got a handful of unpainted pikemen sitting in an unfinished/not even started projects box... gotta keep that lead pile going after all.

Why do that when you can have glorious inanimate soldiers willing to not obey your every order?
>>
>>51899079
Because I already have a moderate shit-ton of stuff to paint, and three times that (at least) to put together?
>>
I organized my collection today. Put stuff I want to work on into sorted boxes and threw all the old things and projects that didn't materialise into a big box.

If I don't buy anything I will probably finish these things in 2-3 years...
>>
Any of you guys pick up Blood and Plunder? I got my stuff in yesterday and am really excited to play it
>>

Oh yes. Estimated delivery wednesday next week... I might just be "sick" on thursday.
>>

What scenery do we need, Jackie? I could paint buildings or start fucking about with trees.

Doing themed scenery or objective markers might be a cool project this month.

Should also be applicable to pretty much any scale and era.

Depends how pretty you want them to be, could be passable without.

Trees is more challenging. We could crowd source a scenario to /hwg/. We're looking at Indians and Brits vs. French in the 7YW. Block house and some buildings as scenery so far.

How would you set up a scenario where one side is supposed to recon an area?

Just need to visit a number of points on the board or what?
>>
>>51904477
The recon unit has to make it to the enemy deployment zone, and then either survive the game, or make it back to the friendly deployment zone.

Recon is mostly important games where you dont really know where the enemy is, or what kind of forces they have. Anything double blind or with blinds on the table. If you can see the entire enemy force, recon becomes pretty useless and to implement it in a scenario you end up making a unit go for a forced mission to enemy territory or visit some points on the table.

I remember playing Men of War, recon was primarily done with an officer's binoculars... he could see into the fog of war, and work out what was going on, without endangering any units by sending them out to scout
>>
>>51904477
Either that or maybe get to the other side of the board.

Or tokens that disappear as the unit moves into 3" if them like checkpoints. Although I would give the recon player some additional limitations as well as the opponent.
>>
>>51904477
Chain of Command's pre-game patrol phase works a bit like this.
>>
>>51904477
Depends on the system, time period and scoring system.

You could have patrolling to certain points, force assessment with spotting checks, dynamic/rolled change of objective once you complete the recon.

I've run a Force on Force scenario to recon a village and had the objective to patrol to X point and speak with Y. OPFOR rolls a D6 in secret and generates the intel/objective for BLUFOR which is then revealed. OPFOR also controls civilians in this scenario and rolls dice to determine movement range and do some spotting. Only a certain proportion of these civilians are actual informants though and part of BLUFORs job is to try and differentiate which civilians are informants to prevent OPFOR from activating his fire teams prematurely. BLUFOR also gets a score bonus for successfully identifying informants.

There's some more stuff, but that's the gist of it.

I have one buddy I play with primarily, and while we're competitive, FoF is more about the experience than other games we play. We treat it more akin to a tabletop version of ArmA.

My bases are on washers, so we put a small amount of poster tac to mark the informants. The rest of it is primarily handled by FoFs inbuilt systems. The nice thing about FoF is that a lot of the skill checks can be easily adapted for a variety of uses.

What's a good miniature provider for WW2 era armies? I'm looking for 28mm I'm going to use for bolt action. Price is a pretty big factor for me.
>>
>>51901068
Finished cleaning mine today, one had a horrible casting issue, 30+ mins with a pin vice, and file to make it look even remotely decent. Huge clump of pewter under an arm had to be drilled out and filed and scraped to make it look like he didnt have one solid lump for a right arm.
>>
>>51896197

Can anyone share any siege battle stories? Or does anyone have any pics of wargame sieges? I'd like to see some more!
>>
>>51906511
28mm is expensive regardless of manufacturer.

If you can get away with it, play it at 1/72 / 20mm scale. Only problem is everyone else plays at 28mm so your army will look a bit odd if your opponents aren't playing 1/72 also.
If you can convince your buddies to play at 1/72, everyone will save money:
$16 US will give you 48 infantry per side - 96 in total - enough for even the largest games.
Tanks are about $9 US each

Or you could buy something like the Airfix BattleFront Gift set:
https://www.amazon.com/Airfix-76-BattleFront-Gift-Set/dp/B003MANNY0/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1488084235&sr

1 Tiger, 1 Sherman, some infantry for each side. maximum cheap-ness
>>
Cruds, I've not played a siege game since Warhammer 5th edition was still a thing. They're really uncommon, and I don't think it's the terrain requirements either. Basically unless the game involves a significant amount of preparation before actually getting to battle, all you really get is an attack/defence scenario with a very limited frontage of engagement for the attackers, and probably some really unrealistic stuff like breaching walls due to attacks made during the battle itself.
>>
>>51907237
1/72 is hard to paint
>>
>>51907945
Its no harder to paint than 28mm. Could be considered easier becuase there's less details and you can get away with basecoat - oil - highlight
>>
>>51907945
Bullshit.
>>
>>51906511
What nation do you want to play?

The cheapest 28mm plastics available are the russians in summer uniform by PSC (plastic soldier company).

All were Vallejo Model Color from a wargaming set for waffen ss. It also has the greens necessary for the spring version and 2 more colors for pea dot.

Base color (the light brown): 70.825 German C(amo) Pale Brown

Dark brown dots: 70.822 German Camo Black Brown

Orange dots: 70.824 German Camo Orange Ochre

After applying the base brown i gave the parts i painted a thinned down brown wash (i used Agrax Earthshade). Then i re-applied the pale brown to the raised areas, then with a toothpick the dark brown and the orange dots.

Force on Force Companion Book 2: Afghanistan, 2001 - 2010.

Enduring Freedom provides Force on Force players with everything they need to recreate battles in one of the most punshing theaters of the Global War on Terror: Afghanistan. Beginning with a detailed background section, the book presents extensive orders of battle for all of the combatants, including the Coalition, Northern Alliance, Taliban and Al-Qaeda. It also presents numerous new scenarios, new mission objectives and guidelines for constructing your own scenarios. This book is an indispensable guide for depicting the complex and intense pressures of combat in Afghanistan on the tabletop.

Is ASL beginner friendly? Never played a wargame before but this caught my attention
>>
>>51921289
You should probably start with squad leader, then move on to advanced squad leader...
>>
I found this. We didn't seem to have it in the OP folders.
>>
I also bought a copy of this. There is a copy of the smaller scale/more RPG-like long rifle in the OP. This is the larger scale game with units of 10ish figures. Enjoy!
>>
>>51921289
Short answer, yes. Long answer, it depends.

Start with the starter kits. You can get all three from the mediafire up top. Starter kit 2 isn't the ful package, though, it's missing reference charts and scenario cards, which I wish somebody would fix some day.

Read Jay Richardson's starter kit tutorials on BGG. There's five parts about core mechanics and then two parts about specific rules. The first one is here: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/157922/aslsk-tutorial-part-1

The three starter kits all progressively introduce new core mechanics to the general ASL package. SK1 starts with just basic infantry combat and support weapons (flamethrowers, machine guns, demo charges). SK2 introduces guns and ordnance. And then 3 finally introduces tanks and vehicles.

I say ASL is beginner friendly because the progression learning from SK1->2->3 is about as straightforward as an introduction to ASL can get. But at the same time it isn't very beginner friendly because frankly the rules are dense. There are a lot of nuances and exceptions and special rules and special rolls and case-by-case mechanics that you need to keep track of even with just the starter kit system.

I myself have only been exploring ASL for a couple of months now, and I feel it's really, really rewarding if you put in the effort to learn it. And besides, this general needs more ASL/hex and counter discussion instead of just minis stuff all the time.

is ASL beginner friendly?

Yes
and
No

if it is your first foray into hex and counter games then I really would not recommend it. even with the starter kits which do make the game MUCH easier to learn if you go in progression 1>2>3 or just jump into the Decision at Elst campaign starter kit (which is in media fire as well) the game is not easy. Hell the 3 ring binder is up over 800 pages with all the modules put together in it. (now granted MOST of that you dont need to play any single game)

it is a difficult game but the build up to getting into it has been made pretty easy by MMP and the Starter Kits.

Ive been playing SL/ASL for over 30 years. i still dont know all the rules. But feel free to ask any questions. Ill do what i can to answer.

Im working on it. SK2 is OOP and none of my normal crew ever bothered with the SKs. so hard to get my hands on. And yes im still working on getting the PDF of the pocket edition. Ill put the call out to my crew 2 weeks from now when we get together again.

Alright, wow. That would be the sickest shit imaginable.

I own SK1, but play 50/50 between board and VASL. I still consider myself an ASL noob, and even though I know how guns work, I would love to "dry run" a few basic ordnance scenarios on VASL. Even if you just manged to put up the SK2 scenario cards that would be amazing my man.

Well....ASL obviously. Im a fan of the 'Panzer Blitz' series as well. The Fleet series from VG, 'Up Front', 'Gunslinger'(an odd one I know but i love the hell out of the mechanics in it). Hell Ill play most any of the old school hex and counter games. and I LOVE the Metagame Concepts Microgames! I own a few of the titles-printed out a few more from the media fire. 'Ice War' was the very first wargame I actually bought on my own. Also a real big fan of Avalance Press's 'Great War at Sea' and 'WWII at Sea' series

>how did the SS cavalry units do?
historically or in game? I havnt been able to do any of the scenarios from 'Festung Budapest' so cant say how they perform in game. I would say typical of any other cav units with the SS special rules. but i am playing through 'Budapest '45' from Tiller Software but havnt gotten to many scenarios done yet. 3 or 4. did do one where I was the soviets against Hungarian cav.....but not from the 8th or the 22nd Cav divisions.

The guys say I have a look of intense concentration when I play. I think of it more as confused befuddlement.
>>
>>51922938
>and even though I know how guns work, I would love to "dry run" a few basic ordnance scenarios on VASL

take a look at 'Decision at Elst' up on the mediafire. Its a historical campaign with all the rules from SK1-3 in them. some good ordinance stuff in there. 1st scenario is a blast. 3 tigers against several British infantry with Piats.

I'm assuming you mean as opposed to games set in fantasy or sci-fi.

I think most of us are just really big history nerds. It's as simple as that. Getting autistic about which German infantry unit on which part of which front in which year of the war would have one specific piece of field equipment is satisfying for us.

For me, a hectic firefight in Stalingrad is a lot more engaging than some faggot elves running around throwing magic at each other.

>>51923146
Both of those specific games are pretty bland imo.

The appeal of historicals is you get to command real forces and use real tactics - or try your own. There's much more "fluff" in real life - first hand experiences, documentaries. You can get a much better sense of the units and backgrounds than with fantasy.

Like the other anon said, it starts as an appreciation of military history. Then once you have that you think "damn... It would be cool to re-fight midway but use my own tactics" or "I would love to play a game of veteran Finns fighting off hordes of clueless Soviet conscripts - skiiing out of the wilderness to ambush an aerosan crew before they've had a chance to realize they're under attack..."

Then you realize you can play those games and there are hundreds of rulesets to choose from - everything from simple fast play games to complex, detailed games, and all the shades in between to suit your needs.
>>
>>51923146
It's fun if you're passionate about games and history.
Also requires a healthy imagination.
>>
>>51923146
This guy:
>>51923595
Nailed it.

Though I'll add in it's also possible to play games with no appreciation of military history at all. Some games are simply played because they are games and very little else. Some are actively bad to try and mimic historical tactics whilst playing. Some games let you try historical things in incredibly un-historical ways, such as playing the French from the 1420s versus the French of the 1520s. Or Roman Republic versus Three Kingdoms era Chinese.

There's a huge spread. Flames of war is a very small slice of what goes on.

I've found some 1:72 stuff just has far too fine a set of details to be easily paintable. I've had serious trouble getting through my Zvezda samurai because the models are just too well done. A most wargaming stuff is intentionally chunky rather than to scale so is much easier to paint.

any advice on if black powder can be played with fixed bases?

want to try it with small scale minis, which are easier to base effectively at a battalion level, not a company level. This gives space for adding base details, scenery etc, but means you cant re-arrange the battalion between line/column/square etc. just add formation configuration tokens, or ?
>>
>>51934983
>just add formation configuration tokens
Yeah, that sounds the most logical thing. Or maybe break them up for smaller bases, with 4 bases (2 bigger, 2 smaller) you can make a nice square, but if you don't want to do it, the tokens would work.
>>
>>51934983
I play black powder using 3mm minis. I use a 2cmx2cm square base to represent 4 "normal scale" soldiers with a 12cm frontage total for a standard unit

What scale? Really just tan/grey paint is probably good enough. I have a sample of that same rock. Individual shells are no more than half a cm or so wide; reduced to table scale they won't show up. Go for the color + texture the walls look like from 100 feet away and you'll be more accurate than some grossly mis-scaled shell texture.

Darwin 1942: The Japanese attack on Australia (Osprey Campaign 304)

Following the devastating raids on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, lightning advances by Japanese forces throughout the Pacific and the Far East, and a desperate battle by the Allied command in the Dutch East Indies, it became evident that an attack on Australia was more a matter of 'when' and not 'if'. On 19 February, just eleven weeks after the attacks on Pearl Harbor and two weeks after the fall of Singapore, the same Japanese battle group that had attacked Hawaii was ordered to attack the ill-prepared and under-defended Australian port of Darwin. Publishing 75 years after this little-known yet devastating attack, this fully illustrated study details what happened on that dramatic day in 1942 with the help of contemporary photographs, maps, and profiles of the commanders and machines involved in the assault.

South African Armour of the Border War 1975-1989 (Osprey New Vanguard 243)

The Border War saw the biggest armoured battles in Africa since World War II. Starting as a counter-insurgency operation by the South African Defence Force (SADF) against the South West Africa People's Organisation, South Africa became embroiled in the complex Angolan Civil War, where they came up against enemies well supplied with equipment and armoured vehicles from the Soviet Union. With the aid of stunning illustrations and photographs, this study details the characteristics, capabilities and performance of the wide variety of armoured vehicles deployed by the SADF, from the Eland armoured car to the Ratel infantry combat vehicle and the Olifant tank. Designed for the unique conditions of the region, South Africa's armour was distinctive and innovative, and has influenced the design of counterinsurgency armoured vehicles around the world. Frequently requested by Osprey readers, and written by two renowned experts on armoured vehicles, this will appeal to all those interested in modern armour and the Cold War proxy wars.

The FN Minimi Light Machine Gun (Osprey Weapon 53)

In 1974, renowned Belgian arms company Fabrique Nationale brought out a ground-breaking new light machine gun, the Minimi. Its success has been meteoric, arming more than 45 countries around the world. The Minimi offers the ultimate in portable firepower. Firing the high-velocity 5.56×45mm round, the Minimi is a gas-operated, lightweight, belt- or magazine-fed weapon, able to burn through cartridges at a cyclical rate of up to 1,150 rounds per minute, making it the weapon of choice for fire support at squad level. This study uses gripping first-hand accounts and striking combat photographs, following the Minimi to war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan. It tracks its design and development, as well as investigating what has made it so compelling a choice for armed forces around the world for more than 40 years.

Something along the lines of a particularly dominant feature or structure. I can't remember what exactly the wording was from the anon that suggested it two or so threads ago, so that was my best guess of intent. So either something that either through size, value, or any other quality you can think of means that a battle will sort of center itself around it. As an example, I had been going to try to do a model of the island of Leros for the fiction challenge, that's the real life island that inspired The Guns of Navarone, and it's gonna take up a significant chunk of the board, and would also be something the action centered around for obvious reasons.

as long as things are a shade of green, grey or brown you should be ok. You can use different shades to define different units too - the regulars might be khaki uniforms with grey caps, while the old veterans might have grey uniforms and a variety of brown and green caps

This picture is small, but the colors should be legit. Just an example of some of the variety even within units.

From our friends up the road; a couple of hard-to-find hex&counter classics from SPI

Air War: Modern Tactical Air Combat is a unique, ultra-complex simulation of almost every facet of modern aerial combat. Thirty of the most important aircraft types to emerge since 1952 - from the Soviet Union, United States, Great Britain, France, Israel and other nations - do battle in historical scenarios from the Middle East to Vietnam, from Korea to India-Pakistan, and in various hypothetical scenarios that include World War Three. The game is played on a geomorphic map across which playing pieces move through a hexagonal grid, which functions like the squares of a chessboard in regulating movement. Probability charts reveal the outcome of various game functions.

Grenadier.jpg
460KB, 698x954px
Grenadier is a company/battery/squadron scale game of warfare in the period of the dominance of cannon and musket. The game depicts sixteen famous battles from the introduction of the bayonet to the invention of rifling. Because of the tactical scale of Grenadier some of the battles are represented by crucial segments, isolated and simulated. For example the Battle of Waterloo (1815) is represented by the attack of Napoleon's Old Guard on the center of the British line, The Battle of the Pyramids (1798) by the attack of the Marmeluke cavalry on the most exposed French infantry. Several other battles such as Palo Alto (1846) from the Mexican War are covered entirely. Commanders represented include Marlborough, Frederick the Great, Napoleon, Ney, Wellington, and Zachary Taylor. Some of the 16 battles depicted in Grenadier are Blenheim, Austerlitz, Marengo and Jena. Attacks are divided into fire (musket and cannon) and shock (bayonet and saber) modes. There are nine types of infantry units, three cavalry and five artillery. Grenadiers combat resolution systems depends less on chance (die rolls) than any game then yet developed.

as >>51964541 already posted, the colors varied heavily. Maybe during the Blitz most uniforms were the same, but from '42 onward it really depended on availability of both dye and quality of wool. A uniform tailor in France would make it different from a tailor in Poland or Netherlands. Another example straight from wikipedia:
M41 Tunic
The M41 is exactly the same as the M40, but with a 6 button front due to the decline of material quality, which by now was 50% or more viscose rayon and recycled shoddy. SS-specific uniforms nonetheless stayed with 5 buttons."

>from what ive been able to gather so far it is a very slow plodding game

Well, the campaign was slow and plodding. What do you want?

The G-1, G-2, etc. makes it very interesting for both sides.

IIRC Train's design was a P&P MDG several years back whose mechanics were so good they deserved a professional release. You're no "500m Tall General" with perfect control over all of your unit at all times and you really have to plan ahead. You have a limited number of G chits each of which allow different things. You can't even move/fight without them and they neatly model operational concerns like supply, planning, reinforcements, etc.

I've got a Decision Games folio of the same campaign and we've yet to figure out how the Germans can avoid getting stomped let alone "win". (By win, I mean do better than they did historically)

In the folio, the WAllies basically steamroll the Germans until the Walcharen landings get triggered and then things get even worse. If there are no German units in a marked region after a certain turn, basically representing being in artillery range of the Scheldt, the WAllies win.

Whle the folio is a WAllie zerg rush the Germans can't counter, the Train design forces you to actually plan turns ahead allowing the Germans to "win" by pouncing on WAllie missteps and miscues.

For me it's the best option for armored cars in early/mid (100 pts), since its not open topped like the 250/9 (90 pts) or the 222 (95 pts), plus it has dual steering for only 5/10 points more (Bolt Action obviously)

>Well, the campaign was slow and plodding. What do you want?

I would say that the slow and plodding effect is exactly whats needed to mimic the historic pace of battle. Im not saying its a bad thing, but there are people who like the grand maneuver and blitzkrieg style of play, and this game may not be for them.

And yes I know of the Micro Design Groups original design. Never played it but I know of it. And I agree with the G chits. its not something you see enough in games. I think it does mirror more the actual command constraints that are in effect in any engagement.

and i havnt run into anyone yet who really liked Decision Games folio game of the same topic.

If you like the G chits then look at some of Joe Mirandas earlier designs. The Buldge '20' series-its where Train got the idea for the G chits.

and a good friend of mine wrote a review for it you may be interested in

>Im not saying its a bad thing, but there are people who like the grand maneuver and blitzkrieg style of play, and this game may not be for them.

Then they're limiting themselves a small fraction of historical battles and campaigns. There's a Cinematic!!!/Realistic spectrum. Limiting your self to one end or the end, limits your play experiences.

>>If you like the G chits then look at some of Joe Mirandas earlier designs.

Miranda, one of my favorite designers, used the mechanic again in a WaW magazine game covering WW2's SWPAC.

Anyone has the old Chipco rulesets? They seem to be gone and I can't find "Days of Knight" medieval rules or "Chrysanthemum Throne" samurai rules.

New Zealand Infantryman vs German Motorcycle Soldier: Greece and Crete 1941 (Osprey Combat 23)

In April 1941, as Churchill strove to counter the German threat to the Balkans, New Zealand troops were hastily committed to combat in the wake of the German invasion of Greece where they would face off against the German Kradschützen - motorcycle troops. Examining three major encounters in detail with the help of maps and contemporary photographs, this lively study shows how the New Zealanders used all their courage and ingenuity to counter the mobile and well-trained motorcycle forces opposing them in the mountains and plains of Greece and Crete. Featuring specially commissioned artwork and drawing upon first-hand accounts, this exciting account pits New Zealand's infantrymen against Germany's motorcycle troops at the height of World War II in the Mediterranean theatre, assessing the origins, doctrine and combat performance of both sides.

Man, if the basic color of the plastic would be different from the color of the tank, that'd be fucking lovely. Moulding US and British tanks in Olive Drab makes them airbrushing lot harder.

Especially that I use the airbrush in a not really well lit bathroom.

Main problem here might not be the plastic color m8.

Get a couple chicken lights from the hardware store. They're like $10 and you can easily position them where you need the light. Also you better be wearing a respirator.
>>
>>51981007
>Also you better be wearing a respirator.
Meh, not worth the hassle. I usually paint one tank per session with Vallejo, AK or Mig paints without any thinner over the sink. Had no problems for the 10 years or so since I've been doing this.
>>
>>51981104
>Had no problems for the 10 years or so since I've been doing this.

I'm sure you'll be fine anon, but the point of wearing the respirator is because of the potential negative long term effects, some of which are subtle and slow to manifest.
>>
>>51979861
There's this thing called "primer". It's seldom olive drab in color.

>>51981181
If you need a respirator for non-toxic acrylics then you'd better be wearing a fully sealed hazmat suit before you get to work with the plastic cement.
>>
>>51981398
I'd rather be a massive pussy than harmed by something this stupid.
>>
>>51981398
The issue is having aerosolized paint depositing in your lungs. It can lead to respiratory issues like asthma or chronic bronchitis.

>>51976940

This.

Acrylic isn't nearly as big a deal as solvent-based paints but there's still a fine vapor of easily respirable paint particles that I personally don't want in my lungs. Particles in that size range can say airborne for hours. Suit yourself though; it's your health that's affected.
>>
>>51981398
>There's this thing called "primer".
I use the base color as a primer...since after applying the decals I spray it with glossy varnish anyway, the primer is rather redundant.

>>51981637
You need to breath in a lot more to have your health affected. But as I don't use it more than maybe once in every two weeks...still say I'll be fine, but in case I'll try coughing up pigments, you'll have the right to say "I told you so".
>>
>>51981850
I get exposed to silica dust and diesel particulates at work (e.g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgBM19l8Qio) so I wear a respirator when airbrushing or woodworking since I don't need to add to that risk with my hobbies. If you're not breathing a lot of it you're probably right, it's likely not going to hurt you but wearing a respirator doesn't bother me and I don't see any benefit to breathing even small amounts of crap into my lungs.
>>
>>51976460
I'd skim your LT to a 2nd LT for less points (nazi's already have an extra "snap to" die), and instead of only small teams make one or two full strength teams. Maybe get rid of the last 2x5 vets and put in one full regular squad.

Also always bring a spotter for your mortar so you can put your mortar all the way in the back behind a building and hide your spotter somewhere in the bushes. Remember that spotters are always down (-2 to hit) unless they are running/advancing. So when he's in soft cover and down, he's already on -3 to hit. If you manage to get him in some building in the middle, he's near impossible to kill unless with an assault.

Also, get rid of half your transport vehicles. Moving around is nice but not every unit gotta go fast. If you can save some points, get a nice recce vehicle (250/9, 222, 231) or maybe even a STUH42 or Pz3. If you got more points, put in a Pz4 (2mgs, heavy anti tank, tiger fear!)

But mostly get yourself a spotter because without it your mortar will be ass.

And maybe a sniper. They can be fucking annoying if you can kill the NCO, or their sniper, or their command unit, or their anti tank guys, or their MG guy in their full squad. Don't forget, a squad without NCO gets -1 on morale.

>>51981104
Mate, you really don't want aerosol shit in your lungs. It'll fuck you up eventually, and then you'll die and someone'll slap all your models up on ebay as PRO PAINTED L@@K and they'll be passed on to another grog, in the endless cycle.

I was wondering if anyone had the Black Powder Napoleonics books? Especially the second one? Getting into it with the starter set (I'll be doing the French), any useful tips for tactics, painting, sources? I have the whole slew of Osprey books from the mediafire folder, but is there anything else to recommend?

>>51982803
>aerosol shit
Standard acrylic paint from an airbrush...for aerosols (spray cans) I obviously don't use them in a badly-ventillated room.
>>
>>51983236
Yeah, it's standard paint, but it's in fine spray of particles form. A well-ventilated room isn't appropriate for that - you want outdoors, or a small fume hood (which is a good idea if you're airbrushing regularly anyway), or at least a proper mask.
