What's your favourite midrange beater? What makes a midrange creature good enough for EDH?
>>
>>51850830
What Are some Good commanders for a Timmy who loves green and a dooshbag who loves counterspells and blue? I'm trying to get some friends into edh
>>
>>51851258
Omnath and Talrand
>>

Selvala and Baral Obama.
>>
>>51851436
Well one's a big fucking green thing that helps you get big fucking green things and one's a landfall combo laser factory
which one do you think is timmier
>>
OTHER THREAD QUESTION:

What are your biggest pet peeves DURING a game?
>>
>>51851436
I meant old but if your buddy has a thing for elementals and will be playing along side douchy McCounter Dick splashing red for the sake of Gutteral Response, Vexing Shusher and Red Elemental blast is certainly not terrible. I meant old Omnath though.
>>
>>51851531
Excuse my redundant statement for being redundant. I am very tired.
>>
>>51851500
Friends use to drive me fucking insane playing creatures and shit close to themselves and lands up front towards me. Glad they ruled that shit out. Excessive hand shuffling will drive me crazy if the match goes for longer and my opponent takes long turns. Finally grabbing my cards without asking. Just kinda rude.

My "swamps matter" Korlash deck is so mediocre but I love it.
When it actually gets going and you have Korlash dual-wielding Nightmare Lash and Lashwrithe for triple lash combo is just plain fun.

Something snaps in me when people just sit there looking at their cards processing in silence. I turn into that guy and ask "my turn? " every 30 seconds.

why does this fucker exile the creatures it zombifies

i'm complaining because i want to run him as a commander, but he shuts down any creature death strategies in such an unfun way that i don't want to. also all the fun stuff like sangromancer and grave betrayal don't work because of the exile clause and that sucks too

also that 18 dollar price tag wtf
>>
>>51850830
>What's your favourite midrange beater?
This bad boy
>what makes a midrange creature good enough for EDH
It has to represent a good threat that needs responding or it needs to put a clock of some sort on your opponents.

And 5 mana isn't egregious in EDH. I can hit that safely turn 3 and have leftover mana.
>>
>>51852224
>why does this fucker exile the creatures it zombifies
So you don't zombify it the normal way and illogically get multiple units out of one corpse, also he's feeding it to Ulamog.
>>
>>51852224

Run him with sac effects so you get zombies to keep saccing while your opponents get nothing

Dictate of Erebos, Grave Pact, Butcher of Malakir, you know, the usual

>>
>>51851500
When people don't pay attention. Like, it's fine to not be 100% laser-focused when we're playing- answer that text, turn around to watch what just happened on the Pro Tour coverage, discuss why SAO is trash with the guy watching the game, sure

But when you turn around to trade, or get tunnel-visioned on your phone or whatever, and then we have to basically knock you across the head to say IT'S YOUR FUCKING TURN and you suddenly want to counter the thing that got played 2 entire turns ago when you weren't paying attention, get fucked

>lmaochaos on their phone whenever it's not their turn; confused as to why everyone is scooping, asked what I was comboing off with
>"Oh I chaos warp the mana echoes in response to queen!"
Holy shit that was like a full 2 minutes ago why do you do this to me world?
The rest of the table got on their case about paying attention and the combo did go off but it was still one of my biggest "ugh" moments to date.

Derevi if you want to trigger people.
Arcades Sabboth or Ragnar if you want to troll people.
Angus Mackenzie or Rubinia Soulsinger if you want to have something alright but not deck bending to do.
Phelddagrif if you want to smile like the Cheshire Cat, causing your opponents to be slowly overwhelmed by growing paranoia as they attempt and fail to figure out what the hell you're doing.

You have to admit that Gisela lends herself pretty hard to combo, considering all you have to do is give her 1 more power and she can two-shot people.

Like yeah, she interacts well with things like Earthquake to keep your guys alive and their guys dead, or using Manabarbs, but the primary focus is gonna be smashing face.

Combo players: What do you announce when you cast a combo piece? Just the effect written on the card or the interaction it might have with something on the board? I feel like I'm going to run into some deflating wins from "Oh I would have countered that if I had known about that interaction". Yeah, it's their responsibility to keep track of what's going on, but there are often a lot of things on the board, and I couldn't blame them for not noticing something like Darkest Hour + Teysa.

Saving others is the worst element of this, not if it's an educated move like I can't beat you without him but like saving the person.

The game that had me up the fucking wall was this 3 player game. Elf combo deck was popping off and would have lethal for both of us next turn, I had a bloodrush gruul that was running out of steam fast and the other guy was a kor equipment that wasn't going as aggro as planned.

I have enough to go lethal against the elf player and the kor guy pops pic related saving the elf. I scoop on the spot and elf stomps kor.

Wanted to strangle something
>>
>>51853571
Never announce more than the name of the spell. If you win the game once it's resolved, say "Resolves? Cool, I win-" and demonstrate the combo. You shouldn't hold your group's hand by saying "I cast Sanguine Bond, which will go infinite with my Exquisite Blood if it resolves and I crack this fetchland. Response?".
>>
>>51854125
I'm pretty sure he was playing to win, that's the thing. That guy only brews super competitive shit, like Narset or Azami.

If I'm going to go infinite and my playgroup doesnt' know about the cards (which they usually don't), I explain it before casting only the first time. After that, it's their problem
>>
>>51853571
I agree I shouldn't baby my group like that, but I'd also prefer to win when all my opponents play optimally. I wouldn't enjoy the win as much if I find out after the game that I won purely because my opponent just didn't know the interaction. I usually explain things what I'm about to do and give them a chance to respond, if I would win the game through it.
>>
ADDITIONAL OPTIONAL THREAD QUESTION

How 'serious' are you guys about the rules and the takebacks? Scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is "anything goes, I'd let them undo a whole turn" and 10 is "Day 2 of a GP"
>>
>>51854269

3 if kitchen table, 6 if store
>>
>>51854269
Depends on how much I hate the person, but usually a 3 or 4
>>
>>51853571
i basically always tell my opponents what i intend to do with my spell if it would be obvious to someone who knows how my deck works. so when i cast ashnod's altar i tend to say "i will probably win if you let this stick for a turn" or "i will be casting the tooth and nail i tutored for last turn to win the game so you should be focusing me"
>>
>>51854320
also if my opponent is thinking about what he should remove from my table, i usually just tell them straight up what permanent would hurt me the most to lose
>>
>>51854269
2 kitchen table, 4 store, and 8-9 with money on the line.
>>
>>51854142
>which will go infinite with my Exquisite Blood if it resolves and I crack this fetchland. Response?".
But that's wrong
>>
>>51854269
depends.
triggers you'll have topay attention to, if you miss a may trigger you missed it, no going back.
if you play a card that doesn't do what you thought it would because you forgot something was on the board etc. we also allow to undo it because we're usually quite high while playing but it's not anarchy because we actually want to improve our game

Oh, my group actually tries as hard as possible to fuck over the player that had lethal on them by tactical scooping. It adds a hilarious layer of strategy to the game in my opinion.
>>
>>51854429
Conceding is a sorcery speed action in my playgroup.
>>
>>51854269
really depends on playgroup.
One play group is mostly new people that I had to teach them about turn phases, that you don't have to tap to block, and how indestrucable works. There I usually let them take it back as it is still there turn and it easy to fix the responses.

Another is people I meet at my normal bar and they probably a 4 or 5

Final group is my home meta and there are no take backs because we've all been playing long enough to know better and are super competitive with hopes of doing a team sealed/draft event at a grand prix one day.

i'm also less inclined to let a take back happen if the mistake they made puts me ahead I "won" a game of catan yesterday before my second turn because everyone conceded. My main opponent was racing me to a spot and traded me to try to build something. He did the wrong materials and tried to force me to trade back. I asked him if I traded him back would he use it to build in the spot we were fighting for. He said yes so I said no and he said he was done playing since that would make him lose and he needed to study for class. Everyone else conceded to me as well since it got super awkward.

Main point being I got knocked out by shu yun. Shu yun was looking to lethal one of the other 2 and had gods willing in hand. I remind him protection from color makes shu yun unblockable. The guy he chooses to attack has only green out and can't block the 21 commander damage. Green guy bitches me out for rest of night for "making him lose."

I play in a pretty closed meta, any card I know my playgroup knows, I'm known as combo player. When I say "alright I cast this?" I hand the card to anyone who wants to see it.

If they don't understand what that card can do then well that's on them man.
>>
>>51855023
I let nooblets take back mostly anything if it's still their turn. I also remind them about missed triggers after their turn.

In my somewhat casual playgroup I let people take back a wrong land drop, change how they tapped their mana, and a trigger that doesn't say "you may" as long as it's in the same phase.

In my regular playgroup people get to take back jack fucking shit.

It's not an issue with attention. Forcing everyone to be fully aware of exactly every play and every possible combo before it resolves just bogs the game down, stifles conversation and leads to anticlimactic games whenever an infinite manages to sneak through.
It's acceptable in a cutthroat Spike meta with everyone on the same power level or in prized events, but nowhere else.

Well, that depends. It's possibly a 'correct' play in the sense that it might knock someone's legs out from under them and make it much harder for them to win, but it's also a dick move to basically say "Nah, you lose on turn 2" in a format like multiplayer EDH. And if that dick move was done not out of actual strategy, but just sheer petty spite, then it's a double dick move.

How does phasing work? I bought this Equipoise card for like 50 cents and it seems too bonkers for mortal men, unless I'm missing something.
>>
>>51858712
When something phases out, it basically holds up a sign saying "I don't exist" with regards to all other effects in game. Permanents phase back in during the untap step, when no one has priority

phasing in/out does NOT count as entering leaving the battlefield

when a token phases out it, and all things attached to it, cease to exist. They aren't exiled, they're gone 5ever

if something has 'phasing' that means at it will either phase in or out at each of it's controller's untap steps
>>
>>51858712
Their shit phases out on your upkeep. Phasing out is similar to being exiled, except it doesn't change zones. You just pretend they don't exist. They phase back in when their turn starts, before the untap step. Creatures that phase in are not affected by summoning sickness.
>>
>>51858712

Basically, it "removes" the lands, artifacts and creatures from target opponent in excess of your own until his next upkeep, but without him getting the enter the battlefield or leave the battlefield trigger.

>you have 5 lands and 0 artifacts
>opponent has 8 lands, 4 untapped, and 3 artifacts
>you phase out 3 of his untapped lands and all his artifacts
>he gets them back on his next upkeep

So it's a resounding "meh", the best part about it is phasing all the creatures of the guy to your right, so that the next two players can attack him without him being able to block, but that requires you have no creatures.

It's a good token remover.

>>
>>51858770
>>51858776

>>
>>51858864
fun fact, even though phasing isn't changing zones, tokens still stop existing if they fade out. So if you phase a token with equipment on it out, the token will stop existing and the equipment will never phase back in.

On an unrelated topic, how important is for a deck to stay on theme and not deviate into tricks? Say, in my deck I run 2 pieces of countermagic and some goodstuff like eWitness and Sun Titan. Is this a good idea or should I have just kept jamming enchantments/protection in?

I mean, it seems nice but it is an artifact which doesn't do much outside of giving you some value for mana during a boardwipe/exile protection in a deck which otherwise doesn't care about artifacts.

It seems extraordinarily unlikely that you'd cast Revelation for four cards or more, which is what you'd need to do for it to be better than the other one.

This seems like a cool idea albeit a bit mana intensive. I will do that and play around with land ratios to sustain UU.

My problem is that both Awakening and Elder are ramp pieces. Say I ax them, I will be then running 36 lands + Nature's Lore, Sol Ring, Land Tax, Burgeoning, Utopia Sprawl and Abundant Growth (+Bear Umbra and Mirrari's Wake at high end) for acceleration. Doesn't it seem kinda unreliable?

Don't get me wrong - I am all up for axing ramp in favour of actual cards but I also want the deck to remain consistent

I think it depends. Are you running Big Black Mana with plenty of ways to tutor for urborg/cabal coffers? If so I'd run Revelation. In pretty much any other case barring something like BGx Ramp i'd run Behold the Beyond.

But I feel they're both pretty flawed since in a competitive meta you shouldn't be able to make it to that much mana with out the game being essentially over and in a non-competive/casual meta you probably shouldn't be tutoring and if you are you def shouldn't be running a tutor that essentially reads "put your 2 to 4 card combo in your hand and win next turn."

But I guess it comes down to a matter of play group.

We can Compare
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/queen-marcheezys-super-prison/

The only things I'd say you're missing are assemble the legion and lapse of certainty. You might want to put exsanguinate/debt to the deathless in just as a wincon/ohshit! button.

Also like your sunforger package and support. You could always run a copy of mistviel plains to return instants from the yard to the library so you can reuse them sunfforger but that gets stupid expensive mana wise.

All of my suggestions are just personal prefference. You're deck looks good over all. I don't think you're really missing any mardu staples.
>>
>>51861227
Awakening zone is weak ramp. It has its uses but your deck is fairly low to the ground to begin with. I don't feel good about cutting Elder but I don't feel bad about it either. I tend to run low land counts myself but ensure my land drops through light ramp (which you seem to have, even without the aforementioned cards) and a pile of card draw and filtering (which you don't have a lot of). That may be skewing my perception of what can be accomplished with such a low land count but my deck also has a higher curve than yours. Still, without playing your deck to get a feel for it, I would try cutting the cards mentioned.
>>
>>51861364
Do the Doran/C16 Naga and Sidar thing where you do big butts tribal. Sidar gives them evasion, Naga heals you based on toughness, and doran does damage based on toughness for all creatures. Behind the scenes as back up plan. Murder your opponents with unblockable Yoked Oxen and Tassled Dromedaries.
>>
>>51861148
Do you want to bin cards? Run Beyond.
Do you want to keep cards in hand? Run Revelation.

Additionally: Tutoring for anything more than one card at a time is silly and often unnecessary with smart play.

What I will do I think is cut the zone and if I later find in testing that I am often mana-starved, I will just add a kodama's reach or carpet of flowers.

By the way, what do you think of countermagic in my deck? Worth keeping at least some? Increasing to 3-4 pieces? Cutting in favour of recursion/more enchantments?

On the subject of countermagic, a few peices don't seem bad, perhaps not what your deck wants to be doing though. I don't play white, much less enchantment based strategies so my assessment of your deck has been entirely theoretical and this is an area that I feel uncertain. I wouldn't put to much in for fear of diluting your decks strategy but a few couldn't hurt. Perhaps not more than four and that's just gut feeling.

>I don't know if it's possible to win without paying like $10 for a piece of fucking cardboard
I will tell you right now, you will not have a good time with Magic if you have this attitude. You cannot hope to have a competitive deck if you won't go over $10 on a card.
"This shit's just cardboard" is reductive and can be applied to literally any hobby. Yes, you can play on the cheap and casually, but you better find a like-minded table.

>I played tarkir standard and bought packs instead of singletons
>I found out that a format called edh exists, but it's arguably just as bad
Yikes. This is just plain stupid. You paid for enough packs to brew decks with, and you can't put down a few bucks on staples that you'll use all the time? Just fucking buy lottery tickets.
>>
>>51862025

There are more affordable choices and you may be imagining a much higher barrier than there actually is. JTMS isn't as good in a multiplayer game and true-name nemesis isn't always an auto-include. If you're looking specifically at destroying lands, then RG might be a good combo to look into since you can combine red's nonbasic land hate, like ruination, with green's basic land ramp to keep yourself ahead.

If there is any out-of-the-box MtG -product that is worth buying it's commander precons. Most if not all of them are at least playable and at best - quite good. From there on you can proceed to slowly add and expand the list, eventually turning it into your own thing.

But, judging from your earlier disdainful post, I don't think that's what you want. I am not sure you even want to play the game if you moan about paying money for cardboard. As the other guy said, this can be applied to literally any hobby.

Not sure what to make my next commander. I currently have Newzuri and Angry Omnath, and wouldn't want to splurge on expensive cards.

Ruhan of the Fomori
+ aggressive in the "sorry but I have to attack someone" way
+ RW has a lot of combat utility spells I've wanted to try like Boros Charm and Deflecting Palm, but the U would give me a little control if I needed it
- may get himself killed
- even a 7/7 may be lackluster late game after multiple summons without any positive extra abilities

Arjun, the Shifting Flame
+ not an obvious threat like either of my 2 current commanders, so unlikely to get focus fired
+ lets me dig for that one spell I need by letting me cycle through many hands' worth of cards via cantrips
+ potential mill or Lab Man wins
- high CMC
- little combat presence/deterrence

Ruric Thar
+ hilarious
+ ruins other people's masturbatory combos
+ aggressive in the "sorry but I have to attack someone" way
- high CMC
- may get focus fired by people who want to combo

Gaddock Teeg
+ ruins many plans by completely blocking many/most dangerous artifacts, enchantments, and instants/sorceries
+ could maybe run as a goofy (although suboptimal) elfball given that he blocks boardwipes
- may just be unfun to play against
