Hi there, I'm considering picking up AoS after a long holiday away from wargaming in general. I've read over the rulebook and some of the army books and it seems very, very simple. So with that in mind are there any tactics or tricks anyone might know? I have the feeling it's what isn't written is what you can use in a match.

Also, is there a tier list yet? Or perhaps more importantly, a points system as of yet? Google throws up the facebook, but there's nothing showing point values as of yet.
>>
>>51816743
The general handbook has a point system. For your tier list please join /40kg/.
>>
>>51816743
Yes read the general's handbook
>>
>>51816743
>point system
General's handbook can be found in the OP. Also, the army builder has the points as well and is also in the OP.

Hello young one, I shall be your spoon feeder.

>So with that in mind are there any tactics or tricks anyone might know?

Just play games until you have a feel for it, watch battle reports on youtube, watch warhammer live streams on a Wednesday

>Also, is there a tier list yet?

Irrelevant, play with what looks coolest. If you are determined to see a tier list so you can pick the most powerful army, just play 40k, it might be more up your street.

>Or perhaps more importantly, a points system as of yet?

Generals handbook, it's in the storage parts of the pastebin

>>
>>51816743
Do you really need anything spoonfed to you? Do you stroll into the D&D threads like:

>So I like dungeons, and I like dragons. What is better a Rogue or a Death Knight?
>>
>>51816784
You could look at the tournament winning armies section

>>51816782
>>51816770
>>51816768
Ah, I see now. Thanks for explaining that! I'm more general curious about tiers so I can show my friends a list so they can get a sense of balance to the game. Ideally everyone is the same, but considering GW stuff in general, that's a hard pill to swallow. The last we heard was that in fantasy, demons wrecked everything and in 40k it was necrons. I'm unsure if that's relevant now.

What seems to be the most popular armies you've all seen then? The game is still very young, but I love musing over and seeing all that stuff.

Been working on my Knight-Questor for Hinterlands. Haven't really decided on a name or a backstory yet. All i know that said Knight-Questor and a trio of Vanguard-Hunters are traveling the realm of beasts in search of something.

Also, this is the first model using round bases for my Radiant Gallants, so I hope whoever kept bitching about square bases is happy now.
>>
>>51816818
I know. If anything it's to avoid races that are strong and popular. I personally like to try things that are different.

Between the strongest sub faction of each alliance kinda : TK / SE - Sylvaneth / Skryre - Nurgle / beastriders - gobs.
I've also seen great success with some original lists (deathlord - wright). Some factions are definitely subpar and it will be hard to pull it off (Dwarf / Brets for example).

i have this 1500 point start list and i have 2 ways to finish it. not sure what is better when you have random scenarios from the GH

frostlord on stonehorn 460
3x3 bulls 360
20 gnoblars 100
1 butcher 140

now i can either add 6 ironguts ooor 6 bulls and 40 gnoblars. i was wondering if 6 ironguts would leave me to low on models.

other option is to remove the butcher and add a tyrant plus 3 bulls and 60 fucking gnoblars(i could use my 120 painted gnoblars from hordehammer for a change) this would make 2 units of 40 gnoblars i can use bully on to make them unbreakable. which would give me 2 giant ass meat shields.

Alright fa\tg\uys its time to make your predictions

Whats gonna happen in the send ed of sigmar?

Do you think GW is going to restore the old world mid/low western fantasy?

Will free people get any love and attention?

Will death get raised from the dead? Or are they going to turn to dust.

How many more stormcast are we gonna get before destruction gets some love?

What?

>Do you think GW is going to restore the old world mid/low western fantasy?
Hahahaha, you're funny guy, anon.

>Will free people get any love and attention?
Probably a little while down the road.

>Will death get raised from the dead? Or are they going to turn to dust.
I have no idea where they'd even take Death from here. Most of the possible angles are either already taken by another faction, are boring or make no sense.

>How many more stormcast are we gonna get before destruction gets some love?
We had Beastclaw Raiders, Bonesplitterz and (I think) Ironjawz since the last SC battletome, so why don't you stop bitching?
>>
>>51817141
Fat fingered, i meant changes in the second edition.

Yeah but since then how many stromcast toys have we gotten?
>>
>>51817127
>It's for fucking ghouls
It also has far and away the best lore, presents a unique and interesting playstlye and does greatly improve a one-note sub-faction into an actual army.
>>
>>
>>51817127

Flesh Eater Courts is objectively great.

It's a shame Death doesn't have more Battletomes but FEC is awesome.
>>
>>51817154
I think still through the biggest issue death has right now is the army was designed around summoning. Problem with that is, summoning was designed around the idea that there would be no points, which no matter how much of an AoS fan you are, GW thinking that they could just drop this game with no points and have everything be ok was a good idea, is really a bad one.

So you have an army whos main gimic is to summon, which go nerfed hardcore and nerfed them.

Hell one of their artifacts they cant even take unless they want to pay double for the model thats taking it.

Sure, but Seraphon get around that despite also being a summoning army, as do Tomb Kings and Flesheater Courts.
But I overall hold that reinforcement points, while needed, were a clumsy solution.

>>
>>51817227
They wouldn't bring them back in the lore if they had no intention to bring them back to the tabletop.
>>
>>51817239
Keep clinging to that hope.
There's been tons of shit with way more mention than the one blurb of TK, but none of that has any chance of becoming a faction, either.
>>
would I be utter scum if I were to go with Stormcasts?

I've never been 'that' Ultramarines guy back in 40K, and ever since I saw Stormcasts back at launch I thought they just looked as dumb and generic, but I did used to play Black Templars for that sick Crusading aesthetic, and now every time I look at Stormcasts I just think about giving them some kind of holy order paint scheme.
>>
As a 40k player who finds it increasingly plausible that 40k will have it's own 'Age of Sigmar', I have some questions for you guys:

How prevalent are the 'comedy' rules which require you to do socially awkward stuff for a mechanical advantage? How bad are they?

Now that there's a points system, what is the AoS balance actually like? Usual GW shit or actually reasonable? Am I likely to be auto-losing with orks forever or is there hope?

How often are the points costs revised? Are they all done at once by the same people or are they done on a per-army basis like the traditional Army Book / Codex system? I don't really know how points work for AoS... I get the impression there's something called the General's Handbook which has all the points in and then your army book just has the rules? Is that close to how it is? What about models which weren't around when the last General's Handbook was written?
>>
>>51817227

Friend of mine is building a dwarven airship, I made some custom rules for it. Anyone want to give it a review?
>>
>>51817321
Eh moot point again, because the whole rebranding of fantasy was because nothing was selling.

Besides tombkings were the only non kitbashed way to get range for death.

Its kind of ironic, the faction they squated was the one that death needed the most to make them viable.
>>
>>51817318
I asked earlier on.

You can check the general handbook at the top of the thread, I've yet to have a look myself, so I'm unsure how well the points are balanced.

I've been told that there's good balance between the factions, but some like the Brets and dwarves have it a bit harder than others.

- They don't exist outside of legacy armies and even then they are invariably ignored.

- Fairly reasonable balance. Far from perfect, but the yearly rebalance should blunt the worst offenders rapidly.

- The General's Handbook with all point cost (bar the Forgeworld shit) is supposed to be redone yearly. We've seen some stuff from GBH 2.0 and it hints of fairly significant and needed changes.

- The newer Battletomes (think Codices) contain all the points for that faction, as well, so no unit is without cost.
>>
>>51817318
From what i have heard from a good source, GW is going to AoS 40k...sorta, they are going to have 2 ways to play a watered down AoS version, and a more rules intensive version which i heard is going to be 30k ish.

As for the socially awkward stuff, thats removed, they dont actually exist in point play anymore.

Balance is pretty skewed right now between order and chaos, namely stormcast right now.

I dont think anyone can answer the 3rd since there has not been a point revise yet.

- If you want the regen, make them forgo all shooting with the organ gun.
- Why does the Long Rifle fire like a gattling gun? And Damage 2? Seriously?

Appers the first time in the 8th edition of warhammer fantasy, you can notice karl franz with ghal maraz on deathclaw; then reappeared in the book for the grand alliance of order, it's debatable whether it was done with AoS in mind or just with the same key thematics and aesthetics, the artist, kevin chin always depicts in those terms so it's difficult to say.

Eventually, sure.

>Will death get raised from the dead? Or are they going to turn to dust.
I'm betting Deathrattle will be the next battletome. I'd prefer Soulblight, but Deathrattle require less work, such as having almost a full range of models.

>How many more stormcast are we gonna get before destruction gets some love?
I think Stormcast may actually take a break. The new battletome format seems to be what GW wants to settle on, and now that it's out (along with most angles one can take on Stormcast mechanically), Stormcast may be taking a back seat as far as releases go.

How strict are people on wysisyg considering command items like banners and musicians? I know the FAQ ruled that the models still keep their weapons, but visually in a unit of 5 if three of them have special things going on (banner, icon, horn) then that leaves only two with weapons which looks kind of silly

if a model with a banner also keeps their weapons, could a model with weapons also keep their banner?

I'm going to want that model to unambiguously be a banner bearer, and also be the only model that could be the banner bearer in the unit. I don't care how that's modelled, but that's what would make me happy.
>>
>>51818741
Command groups need to be modelled as such. Since they no longer cost points I expect people to at least make the effort to model their command group.

Only a retard would disallow normal attacks by your command miniatures, since nowhere in the rules is it stated that they don't have a weapon or something like that.

Long story short, unit options needs to be modelled, otherwise just follow the rules as stated on the warscroll.

in a unit of 5 it really just feels silly though to have 3 of them not holding their weapons. What if the banners were modeled strapped to their back rather than in their hands?
>>
>>51818868
How does it look silly, the champion always has a swag weapon, the musician often still has a weapon if he's not a drummer and the banner beared could fight with his banner or stick it in the ground and draw his weapon. I mean, if you want to do a conversion go fit it but don't make this harder than it is... By the way what kind of unit are you running in groups of 5? Also remember, that just because they hold the item on the miniature doesnt mean that in real life they'd be holding it 24/7.

>>
>>51817318
It's a hell of a lot more balanced than 40k. Some factions and combos are pretty powerful, but smart players can counter them even with less competitive factions.

The important thing is GW plans on releasing a new GHB every year with all the points for everything updated and adjusted at once. The adjustments are done based on community and tournament feedback.

Now try telling me 40k doesn't need something like that
>>
>>51819416
Seekers also have less attacks and less benefits from more models. Daemonettes get bonuses in larger groups, but seekers don't. In a larger army, I could see seekers playing a role, but at 1000k, this army is fine. Also Battleline.

My personal list for Slaanesh for 2k was Exalted Chariot with herald, Keeper, a bunch of Daemonettes (I'm also partial to Daemonettes) with other chariots like regular seeker and exalted seeker chariots.

I like the idea of the Prince, but I'd end up waiting to see what the prince may end up getting in the future such as traits and allegiance abilities (implying that Slaanesh gets this). But I could see the prince being able to take out a support structure to remove buffs. I can see it like this. Prince charges a support hero that imbeds himself in a group. Prince charges hero and draws in his guards. The Hero guards are getting buffed by the hero due to his aura, but now the prince beign able activate first always will allow him to kill the hero to remove buffs from the hero.

I'm hoping we get a Orruk book like stormcast and tzeentch. Combine all of the orruks in there. Give us traits and artefacts based on keywords and allow us to run combined forces. I have 3k of Ironjawz yet no reason to field it. A bunch of angry orruks running across the field is cool as hell, but with no ranged support, I can never soften the blow. I thought about going general destruction and Taking a Kunnin Rukk with my battleline savage orruks in there to give me something. Then take support models as needed, like a shaman or a banner.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the list you fight. Objective game, you should be covered. Against retributor spam or the new raptor spam? Maybe might have some trouble due to 30" range of bullshit of -2 2 damage that you can't negate, but that's your opponent trying to get WAAC as possible. With Stormcasts actually seeing some balance in not being allowed to deepstrike 3" away from you at any point, you're armies may get the chance to charge. Against liberators, I think you'll overwhelm them. 5+ saves versus most of your attacks and the keeper of secrets allowing Daemonettes to pull the witch aelf move of double pile in is surely something to use.
>>
>>51820100
>Combine all of the orruks in there
I don't see that happening. It's clear GW wants to keep all the little factions separate. Gone are the days of the old army books.

But I agree something needs to be done about the allegiance benefits. I would like to see them either loosen up and give more standard battleline options (like just make brutes battlelines standard), or make it so some battlelines become available when a certain model is a general (make brutes battleline when a megaboss is your general, or something).

A lot of people are in your boat, they just want to add a giant to their ironjaws force or something, and they can't without taking grots or some shit that messes with the theme.

I am totally shocked what GW has done to WH Fantasy. This new travesty of a game is an utter trainwreck. I am really sad for people who put a lot of love and effort in their Old World armies.

And before you jump, troglodites, I have actually tried it. It was at best a very shallow gaming experience.
The battle was fought between a Night Goblin warband and a Warriors of Chaos (Nurgle) warband. The Chaos Warriors chose the Sudden Death victory condition Assassinate. While the combatants brawled in the inevitable and hideous AOS mosh pit (there is no rank & file in the mortal realms), the mounted Chaos Lord slew the Night Goblin Warboss with ease and this travesty of a battle finally ended.
Just imagine to move every single Night Goblin around without the help of a regimental base. That fact alone is enough to drive any person insane. Also measuring the threat distance of close combat weapons to determine, if a model is eligible for combat is diplomatically formulated quite a hassle.
AOS is suited for twelve-year olds, who can´t comprehend or appreciate a more complex ruleset

You should be ashamed for this insult to wargming you call game.

>considering how much we are talking about them, and how they are still present in spite of having been squatted

I chalk this up to two main things. The first is that, like bretonians, they were never blasted into a thousand three unit mini factions and were able to hang onto what is essentially a complete force with all the tools to deal with any opponent an great army wide synergies that pack a lot of punch. The second thing is that TK had some standout objectively under pointed powerful units. Point for point things like the tomb snake and buff combos of supporting units would outshine pretty much everything in the game.

Now that the TK got the points nerf bat to the face it remains to be seen how popular they will be moving forward, maybe some diehards who actually liked TK for the aesthetic and fluff will still play them but I suspect the majority were just riding the coattails of the FOTM hotness and will disappear onto whatever floats to the top of the new meta.
>>
>>51820292
Not that guy but he has a point even if he is bad at explaining.

If you take the age of sigmar official community page at face value and disregard the various unconfirmed sources on the subject then all that we really have officially is that 5 guys spent one day reviewing all the player feedback and making all the balance changes and then the next day they played games to test those changes.

That is the objective reading of the official GW source material on the subject.

I'm not trying to start shit with anyone, but I did want to interject some facts into the debate (assuming there is some kind of debate).

>>
>>51819445
Does counter mean they can build an all comers list that can work against all other list,or at least most, or is it the case having to have to own a separate army for specific builds of other armies?

Also how good are the old factions. I don't realy like the way the new stuff looks like, but I do like how empire models look like. Or to be specific the non crazy stuff. I would like to play an army with cannons and formations of hand guns and spearman with some light cavalery just like in the XVI century.

And my last question are there dragoon style units in AoS? Stuff that moves fast, but then can disembark or dismount and fight like normal infantry.
>>
>>51822565
Barring some outliers many sensibly built armies can either counter a powerbuild or can play around them in some way.
The two actual legacy factions, Bretonnia and and Tomb Kings are both pretty powerful, especially TK. The other 'old factions' are so numerous that it'd be difficult to make a general assssment, but at least all of them are reasonable (bar Beastmen, who are the benchmark of shit).
No dismounting in AoS. And thank fuck for that. Can you imagine the rules clusterfuck that would entail? At no functional benefit?
>>
>>51821658
So baseline human Calvary will be Gryph related. Will they release a light scouting version of demigryphs? perhaps.

"BTW Bob have you guys heard anything about the slightly Cthulu/Deep One elves (Aelves) due out later this year? (After Steamheads, which I think are next - oh and there's chat of some skaven stuff too iirc)"
>>
>>51822696
What do you mean by no functional benefit. you could get infantry units faster to objectives and then dig them in and let them fight like normal infantry. Just like dragoons did. This plus artilery support and slower moving blocks of infantry was the mainstay of western warfare for a long time.

Would an army build around 2/3 handguners, 1/3 spearmen and cannons + light cavalery be a viable army vs armies that are played right now?

Also how important is the "magic" stuff to winning ? Are armies that don't use magic at a big disadventage ?

>>51822729
Then why are there horse mounted pistoliers in the game ?
>>
>>51822885
>What do you mean by no functional benefit.
Obviously in game terms, dumb-dumb.

That seems like a viable army, though you might want somewhat more melee fighters for whan the enemy arrives to kick your teeth in.

Magic is useful, but generally not that important; depending on the army.
>>
I know slaanesh isn't getting a good stroking any time soon, but is it still a viable army? I just love the colors and concepts.
>>
>>51823041
Won't hand guns stop enemy armies from getting en mass in to melee range? Plus for every 2 handgunners I would have one spearman. Would having a 50/50 split between handgunners and spearman be more efficient.
>>
>>51823236
It would be awful game design if you could completely destroy any melee army just by taking regular ranged units, with the melee army getting no chance to do anything.

Dedicated melee armies either have the armor to endure your shooting or have movement shenanigans to deliver their punch fast. You'll need some way to stall them out while your ranged troops do their thing.
I'm generalizing here, of course, but a rough 1/3 ranged troopers, 1/3 melee troops and 1/3 support troops and artillery is generally a good split to aim for in the beginning. You can do fine-tuning to your tastes later.

Nurgle and Khorne for sure, but Slaanesh is in a odd position, since he has been lost or kidnapped since the start of AoS. Her blessings have been absent from Archaon's redone mount and his symbol cannot be found on the wheel of the gods, the Horned Rat taking her place. People suspect that the upcoming aelven release is tied to Slaanesh, since Tyrion, Teclis and Malerion are implied to be behind the abduction, possibly taking turns punching it in the gut so he'll vomit up all the elven souls consumed during the End Times.
Maybe there wil be some Stockholm syndrome going on?

Start masterbating with cock rings and leather straps. If you have a gf, ask her to whip you until you enjoy the pain, and then take turns whipping her until you both climax without having sex. Start degrading each other on a day to day basis and give each other pet names. Get to the point where you can have entire conversations and make her wet just by looking at her. Go to a few raves and then host an orgy in the penthouse suite of an expensive hotel room. Rub chocolate covered strawberries on your nipple and them dangle them infront of your gfs face, just out of reach for her hungry mouth, and then afterwards watch a marathon of red shoe diaries with your hands and feet tied down while she straddles you wearing only her panties. Then go to your local hobby store and buy some chaos dudes, paint them purple and pink.

Well I played a few demo games, and don't even have my own army. And even if I did, I doubt I could force everyone to play in a different way.
But that is unimportant. So how does a Free Man faction 2k pts army look like, a take on all comers list ? Also I noticed that the faction, does seem to lack starter boxs like the new factions have, are there any cheaper stand ins for GW models. I have seen some awesome looking models done by other firms, but they are metal and building an army out of those is just way over my budget. I was thinking about getting the core of the list first, or what ever can I get for around 150$, and later get the less important thing that brings me to 2k. The initial buy doesn't have to be super optimised, as long as I can play smaller 1000-1500 games.

I was at an impasse with using stormcast weapons on my Seraphon, when using the stormcast rules would ruin the fluffiness of the army as they aren't Daemons, then I had an idea, plenty of lizardmen were on the ships, and could have started colonies in the realms, using old one's tech discoveries to make new spawning pools or something, in short, the lizards using storm cast rules and weapons would be Living lizards while the seraphon would still be daemons, I'd just need to paint them differently based on gear to make one look more mortal than the other

Multitudinuous Host is hilarious and undercosted, getting to fill your Pink and Blue horrors by d6 every hero phase for free is pretty great. Essentially as long as you can keep the unit alive, you're pretty safe especially with Fold Reality model filling taken into account. You have an incredibly long hero phase full of mortal wounds and Flamers and Chariots are both great fun for ranged pain. Lord of Change is a very strong hero with the new rules. I'm enjoying them.

Warriors are a very strong defensive unit but a poor offensive one because they are slow and lack ways to buff their offensive abilities

Knights are a powerful unit in both offense and defense, and decently quick too, but cost a lot of points.

Exalted heroes don't really synergize much. They are more of a "Fire and Forget" hero to runs at something and chops heads until they are killed.

Check the command abilities of different heroes.

Some other units you could consider:
>Chosen - an offensive unit, but kind of slow
>marauders - a cheap swarm of units which are sturdier than you would expect, but not good at killing. Sit them on an objective or use them as a distraction
>marauder horsemen - fast cavalry that are half the cost as knights. Good for harassing soft or isolated enemies, but not good for face tanking tough enemies.
>chariots - fast and powerful
>warshrines - a buffing unit that in itself is also fairly potent
>bloodreavers - technically a khorne unit but you can include them anyway due to how AoS list building is structured. They are crazy berserkers that can be buffed to goofball levels but have no save at all. A pure offensive unit

Slaves to darkness really needs speed and range, something the chaos warriors in particular sorely lack.

Hallowed KNIGHTS. And yes they have pretty awesome abilities, especially shrugging off spells and having their dead heroes act until the end of turn. It's a very hero-centric lineup.

will these cover things like marks of khorne/nurgle ??
>>
>>51831485
yes

marks of khorne and nurgle don't do anything on their own, but give the models the appropriate keyword which can then interact with other models (the Warshrine, for example)

Marks are chosen during deployment and not during list building
