Pathfinder General /pfg/

How chuunibyou/edgelordy are your characters? Do any of them embrace the darkness, walk the path between shadow and light, or teleport behind enemies for katana stabs?

How do I become a meme?

>First session of my new campaign
>Party is on an airship, going about the decks
>One PC is gambling, another is smuggling food into his shirt, another is minding her own business at a table while the fourth is up on the main deck
>Captain announces that they're headed for a storm and requests that everyone return to their rooms
>Three hours later, the captain announces that the ship is going down and everyone should brace for impact
>The female PC goes to the top deck and sees there is a large hole in the airship and deduces that a fireball impacted with it
>Launches herself off the ship, relying on a trinket with featherfall on it to guide her to safety
>As the airship careens towards the surface, she sees another fireball come flying out of the forest and crash into the ship again
>As she lands, the ship explodes, and she manages to find the other PCs alive but unconscious
>As she wakes them up, the natives in the forest find them and take them back to their village
>The party learns that some of the hunters have reported seeing the dead walking about in the forest and are asked to handle it as the tribe venerate the dead and cannot bring themselves to harm their ancestors' bodies
>Party makes their way through the forest, fighting some skeletons, and come across a cave that is magically sealed
>A strange, masked man confronts them and tells them that the necromancer they seek has already fled and that the trees themselves cry out for justice

And then the game ended because my computer decided to restart.

How did your last session go?

That is an extremely subtle and sneaky kitsune in the OP thumbnail.

Is that OP thumbnail what a kitsune using Disguise looks like to the untrained eye?

Oh, and to provide warning as to how the rolling works.

You roll for five separate fetishes.

Let's say my character is a Lawful Good Paladin, which means 1d10+2. I roll and get an 8, which means I got a 10 total. I consult the left of the table which says I go to Table A. I roll again and get a 9, which means the 9th fetish on Table A, virginity. I do this four more times.

I always wind up playing Good or Lawful characters, with varying other alignments. So my next is going to be a CE or NE tiefling brat who wants to get revenge on the world that never cared for her. >How chuunibyou/edgelordy are your characters? Do any of them embrace the darkness, walk the path between shadow and light, or teleport behind enemies for katana stabs?
I made a super-dickwad ronin mercenary once, who killed people because he liked it. He wasn't particularly sadistic, just murderous, and discovered that as a mercenary/assassin with a simple contract, you get to kill people and get money for it instead of pursued by law enforcement. He unironically used "Nothin' personal" regularly. He was also apt to call other people on their bullshit, you're just as awful as I am, blah, blah, blah.
The DM told everyone to make characters who weren't "good guys". Naturally, my NE fighter wound up being the only killer in a group of thieves and totally morally ambiguous, I promise CN types.
Hilariously, my character wasn't the one to turn on the party. The guy who stole everything because it was in character, but was like Robin Hood turned first, followed by the "no ethics" wizard. Nothin' Personal'd both of 'em. He was the only character of the group to survive the whole campaign, largely because of his pragmatic approach to fucking people over.

I ran a Kobold illusionist a while back who regularly did scouting runs of dungeons and trapped the shit out of them and preloaded illusions. Some traps that had triggers flippable by Prestigidation, some were more simple proximity based, and there were others that were more elaborate.
One of these two was usually playing.

As for the rest?
>Kitsune are actually mechanically amazing now unfortunately, even though their fluff is shit (can be +Dex/Cha or +Dex/Int, can have +1 Skill/level or turn into a tiny creature at level 1)

>If you have a custom setting where goblins aren't little balloons of shitty memes, Goblins would actually be a pretty good small race

I think it's been stated that Jubilex was a Qlippoth once
in terms of whatit thinks of it's past life, I don't thin Jubilex thinks very much in general.
>>
>>51810043
The Bestiary 2 mentions that Dagon and Jubilex were once Qlippoth Lords, and that most of the nonhumanoid Demon Lords were Qlippoth Lords once as well.

See, that'd be kind of interesting to actually see a writeup of Dagon's mindset.

Does he have a ton of self-loathing, hating what he's become?
Is he enjoying his new self, and violently lashing out at any sign of qlippoth influence?
Does he have any particular insights on the nature of the abyss, if he remembers how his mind used to work?
What does he think, really, of mortal races besides "their souls taste good"?
>>
>>51809942
Samsaran are the most bullshit caster race.
Skinwalker bats are fucking annoyingly good too, since they start with flight.

I'll note that Lashunta are interesting because of their unique racial bonuses. You don't see Str paired with Int anywhere else, and I'm not sure about Int and Cha either. Males are one, females are the other.

Tengu are sometimes liked for the free proficiencies, but unless you're using both the racial attribute bonuses, I don't see how it's better than human or half-elf which can also get them. (none of those are good options with the existence of cracked Opalescent White Pyramid ioun stones)

Lizardfolk are just statistically solid for melee characters. +2 Str, +2 Con with no drawback stat, a swim speed, 2 natural armor, and 3 starting natural attacks.

Saturday's session went pretty well, I'd say.
The group finished up an encounter with some recently raised undead and their summoned reinforcements, after having to end halfway through the week prior.

They found clues in the swamp about their attacker, and now have an intriguing side-quest ready and waiting to be acted upon once they finish their current job.

Other than the Monk being miffed about rolling 7 or less 2/3 of the time, it was a good game, and everyone was happy.

Taldor Ascendant is a level 8 gestalt campaign set in Golarion's near-future, where the Qadiran war machine invades Osirion which, in a stroke of luck, is relieved by Taldor swooping in to join their forces and kick Qadira's ass!

Katheer is now in control of Taldor, however the Qadiran Remnant is now begging the Keleshite Empire to call their banners and march the thousand nations of their vast, continental kingdom to war.

It'll get weaker as you get higher in level, but it is any kind of non-magical ranged attack. So like an abberation that spits acid at you or such could fall under that.

Still, unless you're a Sorcerer or a Cleric, Breeze-Kissed is better than Air Affinity, and Breeze-Kissed is more useful than any of the other racial traits you could trade it out for.

>>
>>51812035
Incanter is a Spheres of Power class with a primary class feature of having a bunch of bonus feats that you can trade in for stuff like Sorcerer Bloodlines or Cleric Domains. But you can trade in for all of your stuff at 1st level, so taking a 1 level dip of Incanter is very powerful and versatile.

>>51812045
There's a Fighter Archetype in Heroes of the High Court that gets Strength based Combat Reflexes, I think at 2nd level.

Except not every caster even GETS Detect Magic.

Also, the ability to instantly know 'is this magic' is a massively game-changing ability compared to not having it.

You can afford one dang talent.
>>
>>51812073
Are you sure you don't mean Incanter 1/Sphere Wizard? Because I don't really see a reason to dip Wizard over dipping Incanter, assuming you are dipping.
>>
>>51812124
You dip wizard for the free incanter focus without sacrificing your bonus feats, as well as it nets you like one bonus sphere in the long run.
>>
>>51812045
If you use Path of War it's pretty easy. Several Disciplines give Stances that increase your AoO's and there's the Warder. Other than that though, good luck.
>>
>>51812116
>Except not every caster even GETS Detect Magic.

Name anything that's at least a half caster that doesn't get it.

>Also, the ability to instantly know 'is this magic' is a massively game-changing ability compared to not having it.

Which is why when it's a SYSTEM EXPECTATION that every party has access to it, you're pretty fucked over when you don't.
>>
>>51812185
Again, it's one talent.

Or a feat if your DM goes with that 'Cantrips feat lets you recreate any preexisting vancian cantrip' rule.
>>
>>51812116
>the talent in spheres takes fucking forever until you spend two more talents or suck several drawback cocks
>anyone without full CL/talent progression just has to get fucked

fucking amazing
>>
>>51812142
Except that the point of dipping 1 level in Incanter is that you're never going to go past that one level, so you're not losing any feats other than the first level one. Sure, between the Specialization, and the Arcane Bond the Wizard is getting the equivalent of 5 specialization points, plus Scribe Scroll, from that one level dip, but you don't get any of the choices of flexibility that the Incanter has, with access to Bloodlines, Domains, or even Channel Energy.
>>
>>51812185
Yeah, I'm playing a modified spheres game that doesn't have a divination sphere, among other things, and I gave the caster player a magic item that lets them detect magic 3/day. They don't want to use because it spooks them and so the party has been able to identify loot, which is very amusing to me.
>>
>>51812202
>Magical abilities require investment

Whoda thunkit.
>>
>>51812045
Hero's of High Court has a Fighter archetype that uses Str mod in place of Dex for Combat Reflexes.

For 3rd party options, Warder from PoW can use int mod, and some Disciplines have stances that focus on giving bonus AoOs like Combat Reflexes.
>>
>>51812219
*unable, dammit
>>
>>51812201
You say one talent like it's a small cost, but it's really not.
Especially when the system expectation is that casters have Detect Magic starting from level 1, and early levels is when your talents are at their tightest.

If a 3/4 caster wants to have this /basic necessity/ at level 1, they need to sacrifice half their starting talents.
Even at level 5, it's a fifth of your resources.

>Or a feat if your DM goes with that 'Cantrips feat lets you recreate any preexisting vancian cantrip' rule.
I'm pretty sure that was a 'any preexisting vancian cantrip that can't be recreated by spheres' rule.
Also needing to rely on GM generosity to fix a system's shortcomings has always been bullshit.
>>
>>51812282
Detect Magic isn't critically vital, y'know.

Just go see Deckard Cain or your regional equivalent.
>>
>>51812235
Pathfinder expects every caster (apart from things like rangers/paladins) to be able to have detect magic from level 1. APs are designed around this.

The build investment is one cantrip among four, plus all your normal level 1 spells.

Saying spheres of power needs you to spend a talent to detect magic is like if every spheres of might class started with no weapon proficiency and needed to spent a talent to get it, because 'guess what, learning to fight requires investment'.
>>
>>51812321
>needing to rely on GM generosity to fix a system's shortcomings has always been bullshit.

I know we're all playing pathfinder drugged up on 3pp and homerules, but it's saying something that SoP took that step to actively make things worse for their classes.
>>
So folks

What have your GMs done to make goblinoids weirder/cooler in your games? One of my favorite differentiations for goblinoids actually came from a vidya, where it was revealed that ALL the goblinoids (ogres, goblins, hobgoblins, orks, ourgs (goblinoid giants), etc.) were all actually from another plane, where they lived in peace, and were brought over from that plane by a god of war who forced them to become his soldiers many centuries ago!

So, /pfg/ how have your GMs done things with goblinoids? Hopefully, better than Paizo's attempts at them!
>>
>>51812210
An incanter 1/arcanist 7 will get you 5 permanent spheres, and 3 you can change.

And an Incanter 1/Wizard 7 gets 15 permanent spheres, a familiar, scribe scroll, a bonus feat, a specialization, and your choice of a specialization, domains, the ability to channel energy, a sorcerer bloodline, or the admixture talent.

I'm picking Arcanist for the Dimensional Slide exploit and the ability to problem solve as I go.

It takes place in Nirmathas, a fairly traditional tabletop adventure region. An army of hobgoblins has gotten its shit together and started sweeping the land. The PCs living (Or whatever excuse you have to be) in a small village are pulled into the war, and need to go on an adventure to find the strength and the allies to route the hobgoblin horde.

Suggestion has to be something reasonable, so no, it won't work to get someone to have sex with /you/.
>>
>>51812851
Only if they might've done it in the first place under reasonable circumstances.
>>
>>51812851

You need to Charm first.

Suggestion merely makes the idea sound really tempting, but even a tempting offer for sex from a stranger will not have guaranteed success.

Charm, however, raises their opinion of you, so now it's practically guaranteed since you went from "stranger" to "my closest friend."
>>
>>51812851
The addition of "monster" here makes me worried.
>>
>>51812851
It needs to be something they'd sort of want to do in the first place. If you're an ugly git and you smell like an outhouse, a Suggestion won't work. But if you're already handsome and they're interested in you, then it'll be enough.

And if you Charm them first and then Suggest for them to have sex with you, it;ll work unless you're a really, really ugly and stinky git. Or like, if you're a gnome and they're a kobold and would never be interested in having sex with you no matter what.

Ok everyone, I compiled some statistics on the Wrath of the Raunchy characters. Let's talk about them. These stats only include characters with character sheets.

For races we don't really have any surprises there. Humans are the most common followed by aasimar. The rest is a smattering of 1s. Humans are almost always the most common race, but aasimar fit the campaign.

Next for sexes. Female is more common than male by a pretty wide margin, not exactly hard to guess with a 'lewd' game.

Now for classes. Vigilante is the most common, but almost all of them are exposed. Paladin is not unexpected. I am surprised how many wizards and bards there are. Warlords are the most common initiator. Then we trail off into a ton of one offs.

For alignment I am surprised that Neutral Good is the overwhelming dominant alignment. Out of the entire list there are only two evil characters, both lawful.

So what do you all think?

Let's start with that race choice. Sure, half-nymph, half-elf, that's kind of neat, but what does that do for her? What's it like being half-nymph among elves, or half-elf among fey? I don't see how it really informs her character.

Second, the backstory. It's short, sweet, to the point, but not really in a good way. Years and years get glossed over, never really telling much about *her*. Also, you learned all your skills in "a month and a day"? Really? Come on, you're level 1, but you're not that poorly trained.

Next the personality. There's not much to say, really, just a few bullet points about how she's kind of a bimbo with the suggestion that she'd be DTF regardless of alignment.

All in all, she seems kind of flat. I know it seems like a bad idea to gild the lily too much, but this backstory is in desperate need of some actual meat on its skeleton.

NG female Gnome Warlord (Vanguard Commander)|Bard
Campaign Trait: Exposed to Awfulness
>From Ustalav, close to the Worldwound
>Hey sis, let's go over near the wardstones, what could possibly go wrong?
>Oh, a demon that breaks my sister's legs may or may not have raped her, that's what
>Like fuck I'm gonna let that slide, I'mma toughen up and join the Crusades

Backstory's pretty standard stuff, good workhorse idea of "this is why I hate demons". Having the sister still be around is nice, opens some more potential plot threads than just having Mimi being vengeful and grieving. Perhaps she sends letters home regularly, or maybe Mevida tries to send some to her but she lets them pile up, too busy or too unable to find something to talk about.

Personality is likewise kind of your usual "feisty small folk" schtick. On the one hand, it's kind of Zootopia esque in the idea of trying to succeed in a profession that needs brawn as a smaller, weaker race. On the other, that and "misogyny" being her buttons sound like the character's gonna be a one-note hothead.

>expecting in-depth characters and storytelling from RPG players
Why does everyone expect apps to be done by novelists? Just because someone might not be able to write as strong a backstory doesn't mean they aren't a stellar roleplayer. Most are doing this to have fun, not to do their high school English assignment.
>>
>>51813705
Yeah her backstory is still to thin. It doesn't give me any reason to like the character or find interest in them. Plus if they don't care enough to write at least a fairly detailed backstory then I doubt they care enough to really invest in the game.

>Most are doing this to have fun, not to do their high school English assignment.
What are you mad that someone gave you negative criticism on your app?
>>
>>51813705
Yeah. I know someone who honestly despises writing backstories because prefer the character to come to life during the game, so he mostly just writes a description of where they came from, who trained them, who their family is, that sort of thing, and fills in a lot of blanks during ingame Roleplay.

In my opinion, Backstories shouldn't tell you everything about the character. they shouldn't be complete stories either.

I expect apps to be interesting and give me a reason to give a single shit about the character, hers doesn't.

>>51813735

Yeah even then all I get from her app is a whole lot of empty space. She doesn't tackle any of the obvious things that are important. Plus the fact she appears to just be a DTF bimbo half-nymph doesn't give me any interest in her character.

It's really obvious the player is mostly there just to ERP. They should do that in a just ERP setting, not try and tie dice to it unless they want to be involved in the campaign and from what I'm seeing it's a solid 'meh' for campaign involvement.

Nope, wood. Because plant. And because I'm tired of rolling randomly and then having to do so again because I forgot to include it, let's bitch about...

Wisteria
NG female Ghoran Wood Kineticist|Vigilante (Exposed Vigilante)
Campaign Trait: Stolen Fury
>Used to be a merc in the Mana Wastes, her seed ended up in Cheliax when she got ganked
>Planted in Mendev by a knight who thought that he'd ended up with a fairy tale style child gifted from on high
>Dragged off to a ritual, but it doesn't work right on ghorans
>Used kineticist skills to escape back to Kenabres where her "dad" lives, assumingly to arrive just as campaign starts

The problem with this backstory is that it says almost jack shit about Wisteria herself. She is, in fact, pretty much dead for about 40% of it. We learn a bit about her adoptive father, which is nice, but who is *she*? Why has she decided to just settle down and be a cook? Why have the events of her life (lives?) not driven her to PC-hood already? She seems like she has no real drive or ambitions.

Now we do get an idea of what she's like from the personality section, granted. It's interesting to see the language used about why, as a plant, she likes to be seen as a woman by mammalian humanoids. But the second half clashes with what's previously established--while her backstory makes her sound passive, her personality sounds like she's planning to gear up and be a warrior.

A fix should be easy--just add at least another line or two to resolve this conflict, say something to the tune of "and then she decided to go fight the demons because [x]".

Zefira
NG male Azata-Blooded Aasimar Bard (Dawnflower Dervish)|Warlord (Steelfist Commando)
Campaign Trait: Child of the Crusades
>Crusader mom mind-raped by Minagho, a major Worldwound-dwelling villain, and impregnated by a similarly addled crusader
>Left babby Zefirah at a Qadiran convent that mixed Iroran ascetism and self-denial with Sarenite ideas of joyfulness, I guess
>Always wanted to join the crusades because fate I guess, and hey, can't have taken that campaign trait for nothing
>Mother Superior and his mom who never acknowledged him as hers tried and failed to talk him out of it

There's a bit of a trend emerging in that most backstories are primarily about other people. You're all level 1, I get that, but just a schtick and a femboy appearance do not a good character make, no matter how many thirsty motherfuckers want your boipussy.

That aside, I like this kid. He does seem to have a genuine reason to be optimistic, having been fairly sheltered, and could serve as a good younger sibling figure to more jaded characters.

But please, do something with your backstory other than just say he's got a chastity belt. I don't care what he does, just make him an active figure rather than a non-active mannequin.

Lucius to follow in next post.

Lucius Maeca Lebeda, a.k.a. Irina
N/CG male Azata-Blooded Aasimar Warlord|Vigilante
Campaign Trait: Stolen Fury
>Orphaned son of a Brevic swordswoman raised by his aunt in the House Lebeda stronghold
>Friendless sheltered prince background goes here
>Stayed youthful and boyish for decades, got abused like a motherfucker
>Ended up in attendance at a demonic ritual held by decadent nobles, so naive he never realized what it was 'till later
>Found out about his mom's adventures and background, and decided "fuck this backstabbing Brevoy shit, peace out bitches"

Feel like I went from eating crackers to trying to stuff a pound cake in my gob reading this. Mixed feelings, but here we go anyhow.

The background's got stock bits, but the sum of its parts makes it stand out pretty well. It builds up the character's personality and outlook on life, and while it's the kind of fucked up shit I personally cringe at a bit, it's actually an interesting idea--he's broken his rose-tinted glasses, and wants to finally do something meaningful with his life.

It's also an impressive use of the vigilante identity. Where most might just use it for some out-of-place Zorro analogue, he's actually using it to emulate an idealized image of his mother and try to create his own ideal for others to get inspired by. At least, that's the vibe I get from it. I almost don't mind that it's mostly just an excuse to play a femboy in a dress.

It's a well-thought-out character who has experience, but also has room to grow.

But fuck, that campaign trait deserves to be more than a footnote. You almost had an A+, and then you lost it.

Solomon Kreet III
LG male Human Paladin (Knight Disciple)|Bloodrager (Steelblood), Destined Bloodline
Campaign Trait: Child of the Crusades
>Every man in his family fought in one of the Crusades going back generations
>Lost his grandfather and older brother, dad got jaded and sick of losing family for nothing
>Decides he's going to carve out his own kingdom and make the Worldwound great again
>Barely escaped getting trapped behind enemy lines, but that's almost a footnote

Huhboy, another wall of text. This one says a lot, but without actually saying much. Okay, so we get a good idea of how Sully #3 turns out the way he does, but for a man driven primarily by Griffith-esque ambition, he's kind of bland. Ironically, for somebody trying to strike out and forge his own path, he has little definition in his backstory apart from being a member of his family. His focus and his dream actually seem to cost him the ability to have a life outside of the Crusades rather than allow him to do so. So he gets drunk and parties every now and then--that's not how you make a character live.

His personality blurb gives a little more depth, thankfully. The little things, like his passion for history and love of finding out what makes people tick, that's an interesting quirk. But the problem rears its ugly head again when it basically admits that he's kind of a blank slate on his own. I want to hear less of what he does, and more of what he is, what he himself thinks. Giving yourself a cop-out like "indecisiveness" to avoid telling your readers/GM that isn't going to win any points.

...fuck and here I hoped to like this one a lot more.
>>
>>51814306
I see. I have been editing it slowly and was more trying to go for something else, but I do not think I am conveying it correctly, at least not yet.

Part of the idea is he has had a personality flaw since early age that he has little to no personal mental state. His inability to feel much at his brother's or grandfather's death was a symptom. His inability to make decisions without external leeway another. The bloodrage was supposed to be another thing in this case. I think perhaps making him VMC oracle might do the trick and actually taking the curse for deadened emotions.

I have to think of a better way to convey this.

Right now it is coming through as muddled and I think that comes partially from the fact this was originally supposed to be a different character. Instead of writing a new back story entirely I tried to adapt the old one and it turned into a bit of both watered down.

Thank you.
