>>51790631
Mind's Dilation is incredible value. Your opponent casts their first spell on their turn? You might get one of their cards. Someone else wants to counter their spell? You also might get one of their cards. It goes off all the time and has great interactions with other cards that do things when you cast, like Rashmi, because you're casting what you steal.

Honestly, if Mind's Dilation isn't countered or otherwise dealt with immediately, it can become a huge problem.
>>
>>51790863
Great to know, cheers!

My Jori deck specialises in ramping out very very fast, so finding big mana cards like this that can return a huge amount of value over time is always a welcome sight

Probably Time Spiral. Even though I started playing during Innistrad, the concept of a set that revisits old cards and characters and changes them up is pretty cool. If I could, I would make Time Spiral a standalone set a la Conspiracy, where it revisits old sets/planes and does a "what if..." version, with colorshifted, timeshifted, and futureshifted version of cards.

>>
>>51791285
It depends entirely on (you)
>>
So, Enchanted Evening and Ajani's Chosen normally result in a draw, but if you can capitalize either on etb triggers or a way to Sac for death triggers, you could win.

How would you go about doing this? Impact Tremors and going to Jeskai? Or Esper for Sac outlets and Blood Artist/cutthroat? Or some other third thing?

It's a cute combo, I want to see how it could work out
>>
>>51791285
enlightment comes when you realize edh is a casual format and stop playing tryhard decks and go back to playing dumb shit and have fun with your friends instead of measuring dicks

>>

I've been at the casual, lets just have fun with this stage for years (my tryhard only comes out in draft, sealed, or cube), unfortunately I can't say the same for everyone in our play group.

>let's spend hundreds of dollars on Modern Summer Bloom for kitchen table magic
>it's banned in modern a week and a half later

My smug satisfaction of telling him that it was banned was almost as satisfying as locking down his legacy elf deck with the single copy of Gideon Jura in my garbage tier white weenie deck (he'd been losing all night and busted out elves just to show us).

I went first and my weenie deck is packed full of first strikers (and vigilance) so he wasn't going to attack me (this is FFA multiplayer mind you) until his stuff was too big for that to matter. Gideon came out before that could happen and made it so everything he had must attack Gideon, he kept tapping his creatures for mana so that he wouldn't lose them to combat, also pic related is quite effective.

why does Wizards insist in making Boros commanders about huge creatures when that color combination is the best for small, cheap creatures and sucks at ramping? do they even play their own game?
>>
>>51792421
Oh, for sure- the mana base was literally just "Command Tower, all relevant shocks/duals/fetches, and then 9 of each basic" so I had 37 lands while I brewed the rest of the deck. I just hadn't gone through and tweaked the color balance yet.

DESU, not really. Heavenly Inferno is expensive because of scarcity rather than being that interesting, and you can probably find a Plunder the Graves on the shelf at a lot of stores still (and maybe a Guided by Nature, too). Really the price is dragged up by the Kaalia deck, the four life counters, and having the tokens for all the decks.
>>
>>51792529
Probably. Though I always thought it'd be interesting if they were built to be like mono-colored decks that are splashing in the other four colors.

>>51792612
Fairly degenerate, but there's not much else that makes monoblack viable (I play Nekusar so I'm also quite guilty).

>>
>>51792759
Literally the only thing I can think that's "neat" is that it'll have the tokens for all those decks, and the 'special life counters'. I'm hoping that's 4 of the kind they had in the Commander Anthology, rather than four spindowns.
>>
>>51791557

This, it's not a color so nothing changes, the only thing that it does is let you determine generic mana from colorless, which mana rocks and lands that produce colorless mana already did, just now symbolized with <>, so <><><> equals old (3) that thran dynamo would produce. Obviously this only really means anything when it comes to creatures or abilities that demand colorless mana, like thought knot seer that has (3)<>, so 3 can be paid with anything from wubrg or <> but the <> can only be paid with <> that you see on things like lanowar wastes.
>>

The deck wins with Splinter Twin or infinite turns, I think that should be obvious. Perhaps Staff + Rings + Monolith would be a better wincon?

Pretty bad wincon. Easier to tutor in your colors but much easier to disrupt and much slower. Twin is good because you can constantly threaten the combo and force people to retain answers.
>>
>>51795988
But I have to draw both of them, and it's pretty hard to tutor for an enchantment and a creature in these colors. I'm not saying it's bad, but it can be inconsistent.

After playing mazirek for the longest time its becoming nearly impossible to play him anymore since he dies to shock immediately on entering or gets wiped and the tax makes him ridiculous and not worth playing so I decided to build Meren, so how the fuck does meren win besides using grave pact/dick of erebos to constantly wipe the board?

You do realize that Tier 1 decks are Tier 1 because they CONSISTENTLY win quickly, through disruption? It's not "I can win on turn 3 if nobody stops me and I get the god hand", it's "I can win on turn 3 unless you have like 3 pieces of disruption, about 8 games out of 10".
>>
>>51797211
You use Tazri because she's 5 colors (so you have access to every 1-drop mana dork in the game, across all colors) and because she lets you tutor for an Ally win-con. With Tazri, you only really need Food Chain and Griffin/the exile-eldrazi, since Tazri will find your Halimar Excavator/Hagra Diabolist.

I want to build around his ability specifically, without it becoming a pile of casual garbage. I'd like to make something reasonably competitive, but I'm trying to scale back from my other decks (Marchessa, Karlov, the Mimeoplasm) which are all on the strong end of my local meta.

I think she works best with control cards, as opposed to some of the other stuff you could in sultai colors, like some sort of self-mill, sac-reanimate plan

Her ability is good with 1 for 1 removal and running lots of ramp, removal, and board wipes will let you get to your 7 mana commander more consistently

because tempo in legacy is like I play delver turn 1, daze your first play and get in for 3, now you're facing a flying threat that you must deal with against open mana, and you haven't even had a chance to advance your own gameplan

In multiplayer edh it doesn't really work that way because there's no way to actually pressure your opponents' gargantuan life totals (thanks Sheldoofus)

You can still "tempo" out the table but it really just means you ramp hard with mana rocks and disrupt just enough early plays to land a combo victory before anybody else really gets started, in which case you want to be mono U probably

Food chain makes infinite mana of all colors though, so it wouldn't really matter in the end.
>>
>>51799457

In the end, yes, once you've got multiple creatures in play, it's trivial to make all the colors you need

but if you've ever played prossh food chain, it's not always guaranteed that you have the colors to start the chain, particularly if you're trying to go off through disruption, because food chain's mana is all one color, meaning you need to exile 3 things if you're tapped out and trying to cast prossh

Tazri doesn't have that problem

It doesn't come up that often but it's convenient
>>
Is there a commander that goes well with ancient obscure cards from shit like The Dark and Fallen Empires rather than just the tried and true goodstuffs? I've discovered a plenty of secret tech for monored in the old sets and I'd like to search for new stuff (in any color)
>>
>>51799544

I mean are you looking for a card that says "creatures you control that were printed before the year 2000 get +2/+2" ??

There's no inherent connection between the age of a card and it being good with a specific commander, I mean maybe there's some really nonspecific generalizations you can make like older creatures are bad, newer removal spells cost more mana, but that's about it
>>
>>51799508
No, tazri food chain wouldn't be affected as it goes off with Misthollow or that new 3 drop, not through Prossh.

It always makes infinite mana of all colors. There is no point where you'd "almost" go off.
>>
>>51799596
>>51799508
Basically, you don't start casting Tazri until the mana issues have been completely dealt with, unlike Prossh.

Sure they can counter your Tazri, but you still have 100,000 of each color mana in your pool. Tazri could cost WWWWUUUUBBBBRRRRGGG and it wouldn't matter.
>>
>>51799613
>>51799596

??

You certainly can go off with misthollow griffin or eternal scourge but that's not the only way

My friend's version of the deck didn't even run either of those cards, he just cast food chain, exiled a thing, cast Tazri, tutored an ally, exiled Tazri, recast, tutored an ally, exiled Tazri, recast, tutored an ally, and so on, occasionally exiling one of the allies he tutored instead to make more mana
>>
>>51799650
well, that's a really sub-par way of doing it.
>>
>>51799671

Why is it sub par?

I actually agree it's worth having misthollow griffin in the deck, but only as an alternative plan

The plan to just use Tazri + food chain seems better because it's a "1-card combo" so to speak, all you need is food chain because Tazri is always available

To combo with misthollow you need to draw/tutor both misthollow and food chain
>>
>>51799686
Because it doesn't win you the game on the spot?

Your friend is playing a really shitty repeatable tutor that exiles your creatures permanently for a limited number of ETB triggers, while misthollow or eternal scourge wins the game.
>>
>>51799700

But it did win the game, all the time

He would swing with like 10, hasty, double strike, trample/pro colors, allies that were getting +5/+5 and stuff, it didn't matter that he exiled like 5-6 allies along the way

Also he had that life drain ally
>>
>>51799773
Jesus christ, your scenario implies he already had a fucking immense board of allies BEFORE he cast food chain, as well as a ton of mana from other sources.

How good it is in your playgroup doesn't matter for shit, as we know nothing about the rest of your playgroups meta or powerlevel, but judging by your explanations I assume it's not "competetive EDH" at all.
>>
>>51799821
Food Chain Tazri is good because once you assemble your infinite combo (Food Chain + Cast from Exile creature) Tazri can win without any further cards needed, as she can tutor for the allies that lifedrain or mill on ETB, then you recast Tazri until everyone dies, while also having access to all 5 colors worth of tutors and disruption to protect yourself.

Your friends use of Tazri is nowhere even near that.
>>
>>51799585
I wanted maybe some more incentive to explore those cards, whether there's something cool to be found in all those overlooked brutal color-hosers, Rhystic things besides Study or maybe cards with phasing, flanking, horsemanship etc. Stuff like that. Mirage block in particular strikes me as full of hidden EDH gold.
>>
>>51799849
Oh, and the biggest piece of evidence that your friends tazri deck is nowhere near competetive, it's actually an Ally Tribal deck.

Tazri Food Chain plays 2-3 allies other than its commander, and both of them are there just to combo with recasting your commander over and over.
>>
>>51799544
I pour over the card lists for those old expansions all the time. I'll save you the time and let you know that if you've never heard of the card, there's like a 90% chance that there's a good reason you've never heard of it.
>>
>>51799897
Cinder Cloud served me well as a silver bullet against a mad Atraxa deck. Noetic Scales is another cool card that I haven't heard anybody talk about. Surely there are more cards like this.
>>
>>51799912
You realize Cinder Cloud wouldn't deal damage because putting their commander into the command zone is a replacement effect, meaning it never goes to the graveyard, right?

Otherwise, a kill spell is fine.
>>
>>51799821

He didn't need any other allies already in play, he had like 20-24 allies in the deck and he would exile like 5-10 of those while he got the rest into play, and they would all get haste and +X/+X

But anyway I see your point though, you have to dedicate lots of deck slots to his plan, whereas even though the combo with misthollow griffin requires more pieces to get going, it requires less deckslots so you have more room for 5 color goodstuff
>>
>>51799992
It's literally a 2 card combo, how would that ever require mre pieces to get going than your scenario of "20-24 allies"?

>>
>>51799999

I already explained that bro. Tazri is always available, so you start with just food chain instead of food chain AND misthollow griffin/eternal scourge

In the version you're talking about, top decking food chain without another tutor does nothing for you, you're still another top deck or tutor away from going off, for him, top decking food chain was almost always a win, games where he started with ramp + food chain in the opener were often easy wins

Again I agree with you, and see your point, that the most competitive version doesn't do all the allies because it's a lot of slots dedicated to bad BFZ cards and such

I'm just saying it's easier to start up the chain of allies with 1 card (food chain) than it is to find a 2 card combo
>>
>>51800049
I don't see how what your saying goes anywhere close to infinite, after your second loop of the combo tazri costs way too much to cast and the whole thing fizzled out.

I especially like just leaving her untapped, because oftentimes the threat of taking something is much better than actually doing it.
>>
>>51800190

It's actually a lot more viable because mono black can make 35 mana easier than bug as well

The real issue is that it's not even a very good use of 35 mana, if you have mono black Sidisi, and you have 35 mana, you can tutor anything, and then have 30 mana, or tutor 2 things, and have 23 mana, which should be able to win you game
>>
>>51800206
And I find that extremely amusing.
>>
>>51800211

I just built an enchantress pillow fort deck, and i wanted angus Mackenzie to be the commander, but he's $80, so I've settled on Rubinia here. I was a little disappointed but I do think it sounds fun to hold her ability over everybody's head

People aren't likely to want to play like a Vorinclex or a consecrated Sphinx while I have her ability up, and that's good for me
>>
>>51800272
Thats basically what my rubinia deck is, but with more grabbing other people's stuff. Fun as hell to pillow fort until someone else has their board state set up, then yank it out from underneath them. Never gets old leading a horde of goblins into battle with a mind controlled krenko and soulsang rabblemaster.
Also incredibly fun to have someone attack you while rubinia is up, take another person's creature as a response, then block with it, killing both.

Mono-Black should never have a problem with creatures. Sigarda 1.0 is an exception, but she's composed of Black's two Enemy Colors and even she has vulnerabilities.

i really hate having my money so i want to brew my 5th deck

what's a good commander/archetype/colors for a deck that likes to build a big unkillable board? i really just want to be that guy who puts out permanents all game until i have like 40 indestructible hexproof permanents out and no one can even dream of board wiping me
>>
>>51801489
Sigarda, Host of Herons. Gets you the two colours you need, White and Green, while giving you protection from sacrifice effects like Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos and Martyr's Bond. Then you obviously want things like Avacyn and Asceticism, plus fog effects.
>>
>>51801201
All flashback spells are exiled as part of leaving the stack, whatever the cause
>>
>>51801508
shouldn't i run the other sigarda instead? there aren't that many sac effects in my meta. i feel like a hexproof human tribal could be more fun. maybe a bit of ETB focus and some mass flicker effects to protect them from board wipes

>>

That makes it a lot better then I thought, but your still have to dump your hand into your graveyard every turn. I do not know why you would ever run it over arena, like even if it's a very GY centered deck.

Why do you think ultimate guard is better? I have fiddled with both and other than the cut being on the diagonal for ultimate guard there is no big difference.

Once you start buying one though you should stick with it, that way you can mix and match tops and bottoms.

Geez anon, Aurelia works better as an equipment general than that, since she doubles the value of equipment, has evasion and haste.

I think he wants an equipment general though, some sort of bastard child of SRAM and GODO, while stonehewer watched.

I never played against Tazri but my guess is that you use the usual Food Chain + Misthollow Griffin/Eternal Scourge to generate infinite mana and then you can cast Tazri as many times as you want and tutor all your Allies and cast them all.
>>
>>51801995
Dude just Google the deck. You get infinite mana with one of two creatures, cast Tazri searching for Hagra Diabolist, Halimar Excavator, or Kalastria Healer and proceed to kill the table by endlessly casting Tazri and giving her to Food Chain.

I just started playing this format and got a Kalemne deck but it feels pretty basic and straightforward so boring.

What's something more exciting that has multiple win conditions? I play Izzet and Golgari outside of this so I want something new
>>
>>51802059
Well you just listed every color so Hope of Ghirapur MUD?
>>
>>51801995
You food chain creatures that can be cast from exile, (a griffon and eldrazi) to get infinite mana. This strat is particularly strong because you have 5 colors to pull your protection and tutors from, including tutors that exile like tainted pact to get both your infinite mana combo pieces for only 2 mana.

With food chain out and infinite mana you can cast your general and get the mill ally or the lifeloss one (hagra diabolist). Then keep exiling and recasting your general with infinite mana and food chain.

You can take a look at lists for all the wierd stuff you can run when you don't give a fuck when your combo pieces are exiled, but there's more than one like tainted pact. Low cost "one card" combos like this are very hard to beat, especially when only five slots in your deck are pieces, the rest can be protection, tutors and ramp.
>>
>>51802059
Kalemne is awful. like, "top 5 most garbage commanders" awful. I reccomend literally anything else.
>>
>>51801837
In my experience it lasts longer since the
Seams are better welded. Also the plastic doesn't get worn as quick in the lid bend
>>
>>51795780
Drop twin and since you're already running high tide, play turnabout, reset and reiterate and use fireminds foresight.
>>
>>51802120
Infinite mana during someone else's turn, and I copy a Bolt and kill everyone? Sounds fun. I just have to find a Reset and a Reiterate for this plan.
It's like a way worse Mizzix, but that's fine
>>
>>51802199
Honestly if your deck was going to won through a janky UR interaction it was going to do so with or without Mizzix.
>>
>>51802244
Mizzix helps the deck and makes it way easier to combo off. Jori Ein is "why would you play this" tier.

Should Sheldon remain in control of the ban-list?
>>
>>51802296
No.

Will he? Yes.
>>
>>51802255
She's pretty good in a casual meta as she's pure value that will never eat removal whereas Mizzix would generally be a priority target.

Especially if you're trying to draw into Splinter Twin of all things in 99 card singleton.
>>
>>51802379
The thing is, I have to combo while not being a priority target so I can play politics to stay in second place if things go awry. My Jarad and Yisan are already targeted enough when I bring them to the tables. Seriously, they'd rather focus me instead of Teferi, Mimeoplasm, or Azami.
>>
Is Anafenza (either one) good for Atraxa? I'm going wide with Hangarback Walker, Hooded Hydra, and Chasm Skulker. Also, Gilder Bairn or Viral Drake or both
>>

After the recent yugioh nonsense I'm just happy wizards doesn't have a monopoly on power.
>>
>>51802296
Yes. Even if you don't agree with his opinions which makes you part of the problem with the format the alternative is objectively a worse scenario. Wizards is already fucking up Commander pretty good by designs cards for the format.
>>
>>51802429
>complaining about Yisan being targeted
What did you think was going to happen? They would just let you tutor eight times?
>>
>>51802561
At least Wizards is willing to ban the cards Wizards designed.
>>
>>51802614
Considering I need 2-4 turns to win the game and I need a bunch of creatures on the board, the deck is no less dangerous than the other ones I've mentioned. It's just really good against control/stax decks.
>>
>>51802627
Yeah then they design cards like Cyclonic Rift and Boundless Realms and the Primordials and Deepglow Skate and whatever other stupid cards that are balanced with the subtlty of a mallet for the format.

Quick question: if i have cathars crusade and cauldron of souls out with a 1/1 creature on the feild and cast a board wipe, when I activate cauldron does cathars crusade save my creature? What about staff of heliod?
>>
>>51803180
Crusade won't, because the creature will come back with a -1/-1 counter and be a 0/0, dying before the Crusade trigger even goes on the stack.

An Anthem effect like Spear of Heliod will save it, because in that case it'll be a 1/1, not a 0/0. Combine an Anthem like Spear with Crusade, and it'll come back safe as a 1/1, then get a +1/+1 counter which'll negate the -1/-1, so you can Cauldron it all over again next turn.
>>
>>51803180
Cathar's Crusade is a triggered ability. Persist has the creature enter with a -1/-1 counter, so it will be put into the graveyard as a state based effect with the CC trigger on the stack.
>>
>>51803180
Crusade doesn't, but staff does. Staff gives a static buff and crusade is a trigger and the creature dies before the trigger is put on the stack because of state-based actions.
