Reposting my first finished Skitarii squad for my 850 army.

Still need to finish 6 Kataphron Destroyers, a second Tech-Priest Dominus and an Onager Dunecrawler without an airbrush by the 4th. Really don't know how to do this all in time.

Acolytes and Metamorphs.
The red on the metamorph bases is to brightly separate the two because hindsight is 20/20
>>
Grey or White primer when using The Fang as the basecoat? I was thinking White.
>>
>>51732879
Forge World makes some wonderful models but I can't stand those marines. They're such lanklets. The resin IV helmets in particular look super derpy to me.
>>
>>51733070
The white primer could finish shiny and won't provide alot of grit for the base. Tough to find a good white primer.
>>
>>51733070
I'd use white one. Brightens the color up a bit and makes it easier to tell which parts are well covered.

Posting from last thread. This is my veteran scheme, not quite complete (redoing black and doing the backpack still on the armor side). Would Tamiya Clear Red metallic forearm guards/hands be enough of a distinction between veterans and normal Marines? For that matter, would it look good?
>>
>>51733110
That's what I was thinking.

>>51733107
How is Vallejo's?

I think also Badger was suggested here once.
>>
>>51733115
Seems a little weird IMO for normal marines to have extra colour than the veterans instead of the other way around. It could look a bit garish too. Maybe match it with the eyes?
>>
>>51733161
That could work, too, though I'm not sure what wash would work well to replicate Sybarite Green without either pooling like hell (thinned Sybarite) or being way off in color (Biel-tan is the closest I know of).

The normal Marines being marked is a fluff thing. Bloodborn Brothers versus Steelborn Brothers. The chapter's got a thing about the nature (and natural-ness) of a recruit's birth. Normal Marines are a mix of both, but only Steelborn become veterans. The real reason is because I field 30 Sternguard Veterans and I only have eight non-Veteran Marines in my entire army, so I picked the veteran scheme first.
>>
>>51732950
I recommend doing the bottom half and legs separately for the onager.
>>
>>51733220
Yeah, going to. Added a detachable swivel joint on the hip with some green stuff and only glued the "shoe plates" to the base so far but sodn't glue those to the actual legs yet, so it's basically in 3 parts plus the magnetized weapon options.

https://youtu.be/lU4uXWliRTM

The only difference is I paint the sept symbol white and I use a copper color for the metallic parts instead of a goldish. Granted they're both close to Farsight Enclave scheme but different enough to be one hell of a coincidence anyway

Working away on the first of many loyal and hardworking Imperial citizens. This guy is my prototype for the rest that will follow and I think I'm happy with where he is heading. The armour panels are done, but there's still a lot of work to do.
>>
>>51733883
how'd you do your armor? Mine is currently drybrushed up the waazoo
>>
>>51733923
I brush on white Vallejo primer, paint all the armour parts Mechanicus Standard Grey, wash it with Agrax Earthshade, paint all the raised lines and flat areas (but not recesses) with Administratum Grey, and then highlight generously with Pallid Wych Flesh.

For all the lines on the torso and thigh plates I make sure I have a minimal amount of paint on my brush and run it down perpendicular to the lines to paint it quickly. If your paint is too runny or there's too much on the brush then it will seep into the recesses! I then go back and paint the lines lengthwise to strengthen the colour some more.

Aah, the administratum adds a lot to it, I think. I'm using a similar color scheme, but I'm liking yours better. Maybe grass is greener, but I'm not at the stage you are with any of mine.
>>
>>51734154
How are you painting your armour? I'd like to see how they turn out! I feel like a lot of colour schemes come together at the end as the highlights draw it together.
>>
>>51733982
Do you thin the primer at all? I was planning to buy some tomorrow, I'm tired of black.
>>
Can someone post a picture of a washed flat surface? I'm having major problems with contrasting the pooling and it's infuriating me
>>
>>51734315
I put it on a wet palette first, but otherwise no. That primer is meant to be fed directly into an airbrush without being thinned so it's already pretty Duncan-approved. Along with the water from the wet palette I applied two thin coats of the white primer and it provided the coverage I wanted.

update on my glow in the dark nurgles
>>
>>51734304
Looks like black wash over white and multiple thin coats which maintains the shadow of the black wash underneath. The only problem with this method, there's a very thin line of perfection between too little paint and too much as even one extra coat changes the opacity drastically.
>>
>>51734719
You're being very generous where you put your highlighting giving too much of a messy, painted look instead of a realistic one. Having a solid basecoat for the most part and a visible thought out highlight really makes a difference. Otherwise give it another wash and ONLY highlight the extremes.

any insight? tips on how to use this stuff better?
>>
>>51735751

What I've found while experimenting with it is that being careful while filling the mold is key to getting a good result. When I first started I got some wonky stuff cause I just stuffed them. Not I take time to ensure that they are full, but not too full. Just right to the lip of the mold so that the halves will stick together without too much excess. Once I started doing that things got much better. Hope that helps.

nw mate. There's a couple of different schools of thought about doing bases and they're all valid in their own way. Some people go all out for bases to add to the theme of their army (ie urban) while others going minimalist or nothing at all so it doesn't distract from the models. I try to stick to the middle ground because the extremes of each can be kinda lackluster or scary in their complexity (pic related).
>>
So after 8 fucking years I'm finally getting around to painting my 2009 edition space hulk.

Dude actually, yes. Its the only tool of theirs I own and I love it. Hey fa/tg/uys, first time poster here. I recently traveled to the US on vacation, and I visited a lot of hobby shops over there, mainly because here on my country the stuff we have is kinda crappy. I was delighted to find some marines for sale and couldn't miss the opportunity to get me a tactical squad, since I the chance wouldn't present itslef for quite some time.
So this is Beakie, my very first built and painted Space Marine. What do you guys think?

I think it was somewhat common for Marines to mix and match parts from different power armours.
In fact, the Mk. V was born from a lack of new power armour, so the techmarines pieced the Mk. V together from older models, and tacked some studs on for reinforcement.

>Anything else I should do to this base? I'm honestly pretty shit when it comes to bases

If that's the finished product, yeah, it's pretty weak. It still looks like I can see the bare black plastic through the texture paint. You could:

1). Use a lot more texture paint, but at GW's prices, I don't think I'd have to explain how pricey that could get.
2). Put something on the base first - putty, fine sand, basing slate - and then put the texture paint over it or around it.
3). Paint over your texture paint to finish the base. But then, what was the point of the expensive Citadel paint?
4). Add bits of flock or clumps of static grass. Don't cover da whole fing, just accent it.

>I bought some astrogranite texture paint and colored it up a little.

I'd certainly paint the base rim a colour such as Baneblade Brown or Steel Legion Drab. Black base rim looks unfinished regardless. Personally I'd go for Steel Legion Drab as it's darker brown tone would tie in well with your swamp style base.

Good work either way, keep it up mate.

She actually does have a face I swear.

I'm not super pleased with this one, but she's done and I guess that's good enough. African skin tones are quite a bit harder than Caucasian skin tones it turns out.
>>
>>51739740
Yeah, it's hard to differentiate it at that scale from other things, whereas pale pinkish skin gets paints made primarily for it.
I heard painting purple basecoat, painting a layer of brown, washing with purple again, and working back up again can work. Supposed to look like blood vessels, a huge part in how human skin looks. Never done it and might be misremembering it though.

You've got a good colour though. The face is obscured but going by the middle bottom picture and the hand, it looks good in terms of tone and depth.

No, but I think you could buy them on the bitz sites or ebay.

Off topic, but does anyone else think the writing on the Regimental Standard has gone far too cheesy? It's too much blatant lies and self-contradiction to be believable or even funny at this point.

>ha ha, they tell blatant lies
isn't funny by itself. It's the type of lies that a commissar might tell to get a unit through the worst periods of a campaign.
Lies like "if you headshot a wraithknight it'll die, so stand your ground, keep firing, and pray the Emperor grants you success" work, because it's the type of thing a beleaguered commissar might tell beleaguered troops to prevent a rout.
Lies like "this Eldar isn't anything important he just grabs clothes off of dead Eldar lol" are pointless, particularly when it would make sense for them to tell the enemy that this unit was the leader of the enemy, and get them firing at full clip at it.

It's double heresy when the article is basically inciting the troops to be jealous of their officers and loot their corpses, and outright commits heresy by presenting the Space Marines as cowards and weaklings.

>>
>>51741393
More hit or miss which has more to do with the style of writing they are using. It's meant to be blatant propaganda that is tongue in cheek so some jokes will fall flat

The SoS is painted just like Duncans video: Balth Gold base, Druchii violet wash and runelord brass highlight with a light drybrush of necron compound.
>>
>>51741541
I pointed out logical errors and in-universe inconsistencies though, independent of the style they're writing with.

Commissars don't tell the troops to not shoot at the enemy's command unit, feel that they are being issued inferior uniforms, and rate the Space Marines as weak cowards.

Eh, it's explainable if you consider the fluff for what is going on right now. The space marine bit is just a trail of how badass would you be and kind of a joke on how marines can break from close combat but always rally. I'm thinking of a theme for my IW army, one that I can build around in both conversions and bases.
I was thinking of Trench Warfare, giving bases a very muddy, wartorn trench look and slightly converting even the basic dudes with battle damage and replacement parts. Maybe the occasional old "pickelhaube" MKII helmet styles here and there. I can see it working pretty well given the fluff of the legion.
I thought I had a picture to show as an example, but I can't seem to have any, but if you've seen the average painted DKoK army, that's more or less what I'd like to go for. Anyone has some suggestions? I'm thinking about going with a very simple Leadbelcher base, with a wash of nuln for shading, then a liberal one of agrax to go for a dirty/rusty metal look. Some scratches with a lighter silver and a faded/patchy look to the usual hazard stripes.

>If that's the finished product, yeah, it's pretty weak. It still looks like I can see the bare black plastic through the texture paint.
The whole thing was gray, actually. I washed it with Nuln and brushed over it with a lighter color, though there is a bit under the one foot.

>1). Use a lot more texture paint, but at GW's prices, I don't think I'd have to explain how pricey that could get.
I honestly think my was funky because the pot wasn't even full, but yea. Pricy indeed.

>2). Put something on the base first - putty, fine sand, basing slate - and then put the texture paint over it or around it.
I didn't want to raise the model too high, but I also didn't want to put too much under it be side of how far down the robes reach. Sand might work. I also have a hard Styrofoam block I can cut/shave for shit.

>3). Paint over your texture paint to finish the base. But then, what was the point of the expensive Citadel paint?
I did, actually. The texture paint was for the texture, though I mostly just dry brushed it.

>4). Add bits of flock or clumps of static grass. Don't cover da whole fing, just accent it.
Actually, I might have some old static grass left I could try.

As for the Inq himself not sure what to think of what I built. He's as big as an Astartes unfortunately, although the different backpack does make it feel like a non-Astartes, y'know human set of armour. Thought this pic showed the pack more than it does, but it's just a merging of the Eisenkern backpack that belongs to the base model, and a DW SM pack. Not sure whether to remove the targeting/scanner doodad on top, not a huge fan of it myself. Also, I like how the armour looks big, almost ill-fitting on him, almost like Terminator armour. Makes him really feel like a mere human in a suit of almost-Astartes level power armour.

>>
>>51737409
why the fuck did you make his arms so long?

Looks literally retarded, you need to cut the whole glove off if you're using different hands.

Two double edged axes also looks dumb as shit.

>but hurr its khonre =P
just look at Angron, he's not as over the top as half the minis khornebabby's try and create.
>>
>>51746443
I didn't use Scion arms because I didn't want the Scion shoulders on my power armour. With the size of Scion shoulders and standing next to actual Scions (the army is Scion core) you can tell it's just carapace, not power armour. Originally I was going to use the large (but not SM-large) Eisenkern shoulder pads but they just made the model look much less 40K, similarly I was going to just leave the backpack, maybe drill some holes in the top part as vents but it didn't look 40K enough.

>>51746450
The Empire State Troops sprue I believe, with one of the extra feathers glued in. Or could perhaps be the Handgunner sprue, I have the two sprues in just a jumble on my desk as I'm making a Marienburg Mordheim band out of them.
>>
>>51746539
Oh that makes sense, plus the shoulders do bring in some of the much needed ornamentation to fit in with the head, but you might want to get even fancier ones on there if they fit. The cable on the powerfist needs reconnecting or removal. I'd say, yeah get rid of that relay on top and find something decadent to throw on there, maybe a big inquisitorial symbol if you've got anything like that. Oh and the sword, when I built my Eisenkern guys, I noticed that that particular sword is missing a spike and replaced the whole thing with the terminator one from the calth box, looks like it's a defect in the mould since yours is missing it too.
>>
>>51746679
>might want to get even fancier ones
Actually, choosing the more plain shoulders was deliberate, I didn't want him to look like he had all more heraldry and stuff than a decorated Astartes. I'll either do some freehand scripture or try and get a brass-etched Inq symbol on there though.

>cable on the powerfist needs reconnecting or removal
Yeah like I said WIP, I'll probably just greenstuff a connector in there.

>that particular sword is missing a spike
Oh damn I didn't think it was such a widespread manufacturing issue, thought it just happened to me. I trimmed down the other spike to match, and if it fits I'll probably chuck a brass-etched symbol on there, not worried about that.

But what about US based sites that stock 40K, WHFB, AoS, and FW items ? I'm tired of ordering through FWs site and paying conversion and shipping on top of cost, and paying full MSRP for 40K stuff from GW when if my FLGS carried the items, I could go there and get 15% off or more.

Sorry I got no pics, but something I did for my Iron Warriors:

I wrapped parts of their armor (or vehicle parts) in brass etched barbed wire.

Because Black Templars wrap themselves in chains, symbolizing their faith or whatever. A huge number of other chapters do that too. Just wrapped around the forearms, shins, etc.

But IW are trench warfare dudes. Barbed wire, dark with dirt, nasty with orange rust, wrapped around limbs, horns, weapons.

Cassor has been interred into the Hall of Heroes, at least for the time being. While he soaks away millennia of blood and rust don't fret - I'll be collecting "trophies" from my friends' armies.
I think a few Tyranid and Chaos Space Marine bitz should be enough? Maybe Dark Eldar and Eldar? Khorne Daemonkin and Night Lords? Perhaps Crimson and Imperial Fists? Cassor has many glorious to his name, it's going to be hard to choose just a scant few trophies to commemorate his finest moments.

Plasma feeding from a tube/lasgun packs instead of the standard issue flasks bothers me.

But ignoring that, the area under the muzzle needs something to kind of bulk it out or link it with the plasma part. Because it really obviously looks like a combi- bit slapped on a hotshot right now.

Hello people!

I've recently decided to give a try to this material. However my copies seem to come out not as detailed as I want them to be. I think that I'm doing the mold part somewhat correct, its the filling part that I keep fucking up.
Any tips to improving detail quality when using mold would be appreciated.

Also what kind of level of detail can I expect when using blue stuff? Like, proper ork teeth are next to impossible, right?

I've actually gotten vwry good detail out of it. When you make the mold recast both sides several times. I didn't get why they told me to do this at first, but I think I've finally figured it out, though I can't quite think of how to articulate it. Regardless it does work. If you do front back front back front back then the mold is much better than just front back. Takes a bit longer, but if it's something you intend to get several casts from I think it is worth it for the better mold.

Question on washes/inks. I've been using Reaper's MSP line and to do washes I've just been adding a lot of water to the normal paints. As I watch others paint with proper washes I feel like I'm doing something wrong. It seems like most people use the Citadel washes so I was thinking of picking some up. What do you mean with front-back thing? Are you talking about spending more time on giving form to mold while it is still hot?
>>
>>51751195

So when you make it you press it into the blue stuff yeah? And then you take and press another blob onto the back, and that makes the mold. Well once you've done that take the front half, the half you pressed the front into, and put it back into the hot water and render ot down before pressing it onto the piece again, this time with the piece resting on the back half. Rinse and repeat with both sides a few times. Also, use a frame and something you can use to press down with to exert even pressure. Tell you what, I'm going to be making a new mold tomorrow, so if that didn't make sense what I can do is take pictures and then post them for you to show you how I do it.
>>
>>51751264
>take pictures and then post them for you to show you how I do it
