And of course I fucked up the little arrows in the quotes. Anyway, here's a repost from last night:

This guy is coming along nicely. Still have a lot of work to do. Lots of little touch ups, definitely need to smooth out his skin wash a bit, highlights, etc.

Not super happy with the color of the loincloth but I'm sticking with it, this was kind of a "for fun" model I'm using for a Silver Tower game.

tl;dr I have 2 questions:

1. Can I do anything at this stage to smooth out those gaps that I obviously missed in his head? You can see seams around it where I glued the plasticard together. Thought I got it all, but primer makes fools of us all in that regard.

2. How can I make the bones on his spine stand out a little more? They were pure white before I washed them and it was probably a mistake washing them the same color with the same ratio as the skin which was also pretty pale to begin with. Anything I can do at this point about that?

To be honest this is my first painted mini in about 3 years and I've painted about a total of 5 before this. I'm aware of most of my mistakes but I'd love to hear what you guys think.

So I have been working on this bit of the shrine of the Aquila, but I realized I've been stupid going about this. I want it to blend in towards the bottom to match the mat below it, however I'm not really sure how to go about it. I put a bunch of yellows and browns on the wall thinking that's what the building might look like if it had been exposed to dirt clumps hitting the walls + erosion. Later I looked up actual weathered buildings and they all seem to have a fairly even ware which is nothing like what I've done. I was going to put agrellan earth at the very bottom near the ground but I don't think that will look very good. Any suggestions to make this match a bit better?

Apologies in advance if I phonepost this picture sideways or if it's a thumbnail, I tried to resize on my phone.

1. Spray white
2. Paint two layers of yriel yellow.
3. Recess wash with reikland fleshshade, dont get any on the flat surfaces.
4. Edge highlight dorn yellow or bleached bone.

EZ EZ EZ. I used to start with a dark primer, then averland, then layer up to this color. It was terrible and I'll never go back.

it can cause paint particles to dry in mid air, giving that chalky texture you may have seen before when using GW primer.

you can counter it though by putting a small amount of paint thinner in it, which will take the paint a lot longer to dry on the model, but it wont be chalky dogshit

Holy shit why are the connections for the Tau Crisis Suit's jets so long and thin? Should have been squat and shallower. One of them already broke off and it's murder to place them properly because that one tiny fragile nub of plastic is the only guide to its proper position.

I like it, you're the guy with the purple/blue eldar right? It helps fit your theme and gives a nice dark to light contrast as your eye wanders from gun, to chest and finally the green canopy.

I presume the dark brown areas will go to the same brass as the spine and stuff? If so you can probably turn the blue up a little more on the edges.
>>
>>51719646
Just try and continue the lines from the neck up to the skull, the greenstuff should blend with the neck but probably not the skull.

I think you should reconsider the position of the head before you go further though. Look at some pictures of hyenas perhaps, they have the most similar body structure in real life, their necks attach to the back of their skull rather than the bottom.
>>

So I've decided to theme my 30k Mechanicus army around the Genetors, or Magos Biologis. Lots of Skaven parts, some Deldar, some other Fantasy stuff mixed in for mad science, obviously along with a bunch of cybernetics and stuff.

So what bitz should I use to make my Genetor Magi? Was thinking Wrack parts and syringes, and maybe an Arachnarok Spider as the abeyant for my Scoria proxy? Remove the upper-back section of the abdomen, turn the abdomen into a command platform with a couple control consoles and a socket for his upper body and such. Not sure what I'd do for the Vodian Sceptre other than strap some evil medical tools to his mandibles and general cybernetics everywhere, though.

What for the lesser Magi and the Servitors and Enginseers, though? They're all going to have the usual Admech robes and such, obviously, but there aren't too many bitz I've seen that work as Admech surgical tools and things.

Happy valentine's, WIP. Would like to have been done with these models already, but nothing you can do about catching a bug.

Bit more work done on the hasslefree troopers and inquisitor. Just the black/guns and a head to do, but the latter's going to have to wait until an order gets in so I can compare hat with helmet. Also converted up a lascutter/volley gun with a spare trooper, since the standard volley gun looks terrible and cutting plastic up is the best medicine.
>>
>>51727371
The void?
A slick blue-black with gloss varnish and Night Lord-esque lightning stylings to look like the energy is pulsing through their surroundings?

Oh, you meant World Eaters.
Nothing particularly special, just make sure to tie in blood splashes onto the ground as well, possibly with corpses around them.
Or you could make them within Khorne's realm, in a conventional vision of hell with fire everywhere, or wading through blood - water effects with BFTBG painted over it.

>>51727371
40k means red marines?
Then you need a good contrast color.
Black or Whites work well. Red is a pretty overwhelming hue so you want to keep the color lowkey unless you are going for old timey 80s style super colorful.
In that case just use green cause that is a complementary contrast. So the guy suggesting a field of flowers had a point. Could look pretty cool actually. Think about how all those blood bowl bases look at the moment. Mud and blood on green grass. Just add some bulletcasings to the mix and I could see how the World Eaters just starter a slaughter on the helpless population of an Agriworld.
Golden fields of Corn could also work. Corn...heh

Anyway, black rock and white snow look cool. Another spin on the lush green could be jungle bases, which also looks pretty awesome usually. Maybe black and white marble/granite or a ruined temple.

Basically anything that's a good color contrast to your paintscheme and sets the theme for your army.

I'd recommend you just use plastic glue, cause there is already a solvent int here and the bottle comes with a nozzle that let's you put it where you want it.

If you absolutely want to, you could try using acetone for the chemical weld, but it's basically the same result with a lot more fuzz.

I think the legs look messed up. See it started with the scourge legs which had the segmented plating up top. Well I didn't like that so I tried to smooth them out with mixed results. When that didn't work I decided I would just sculpt smooth armor plates over that, which I did. Then I realized that if there were only plates on the top of the thighs it looked wonky, so I added more greenstuff all the way around. Then it occured to me that the calves looked weird now, so I added green there, and It seems to me that I've made a hash of the legs. But maybe I'm just over reacting.

I bought some nailart microbeads a while ago on ebay. the postage was more expensive than the beads and it's gonna last me a long long time.

No cause for hate, it's good.

We're into niggling territory here (since it's high-quality), but I don't think the battle damage on the breastplate works, it looks like sloppy painting (in a way nothing else does) rather than the special effect that was intended.

Also the base is a little sparse and/or flat. Some different colours from shades or a drybrush might make it look more interesting and "pop".

>I just cant get them to look Pale yet demonic without looking dirty and I need to have them finished for a game on Friday
You have to choose between perfect and fast, anon.
Truth be told, this is one of those areas where experimentation is the only solution.
I also think it might be one where airbrushing might be a deciding factor for that "ethereal" look.

Or have you considered just adding layers of purple shade purple rain over white until you're happy with it, the most basic route?

>>51728758
If you're making more, consider adding more than just one non-model item on the base, even if it's just a loose stone.
It looks like your base is a city ruin, so you can get away with lots of cool stuff.
>>
>>51728736
Try Rakarth -> gloss varnish -> a layer or two of watered down Druchii or 1/3 water, 1/3 druchii, 1/3 carroburg crimson if you want a pink/purple tone -> Pallidwych -> matte varnish

Don't want to sound rude, but the yellow makes it looks like it's made out of plastic.

I advice adding some damage and dirt if you want it to look a little more realistic.

GW drill tool + a needle/point of a hobby knife.

Use the needle to put a small dent in the middle of the barrel. Using the smallest drill of GW (1mm usually), make it so that only about half a cm of drill is poking out the tool, then place the drill on the small hole (it should fall in place and keep it from fucking up your barrel if you misdirect it). You can either drill down all the way or just a little bit. If you go all the way, it will have a cool, 3d effect, but you risk ruining the barrel if you're not centered properly. If you drill a little bit, use shades to make it look like it's a deeper hole.

A drill.

There's a type you can get that look a bit like a metal biro that involve tightening their hold on the drill bits and having a rotating mechanism at the top that lets you rotate the drill point with the heel of your hand.

I personally have one from the Army Painter, but I would not recommend it at all.

For small jobs that you don't need to drill deeply, you can get away with just buying the drill bit independently from your local hardware store and rotating it with your hand slowly. It's a bit more awkward though, but it'll do for small jobs.

Look up Nurgle tutorials. Simple as that. Put some purple-transitions here and there to resemble bruising. Make the skin more pale to simulate blood loss. (Which is a bit silly since Ork blood is red, but whatevs.)

Also, if you're making the Ork heads dirty, remember to also make the boots/pants of the guardsmen a bit dirty. And if you want /them/ to have been the ones to cut those heads off, put some (cleaned off) blood on their hands.

Also, contemplate adding a tattoo or some warpaint on the Orks if they still don't pop out enough.

That's about all the detailing tips I have on that, hope you can use them.

What the fuck, way to misrepresent everything I said. (Re)read it and you'll see I said nothing you said I said. Read it properly before you shoot your mouth off.

I only said I would not recommend the Army painter pin vice/hand drill specifically, because the drills that come with it are weird sizes, and don't get tightened enough to stay in the slots they can fit into.
But it works fine with the drill bits I bought from the hardware shop. If anon wants to get cracking on drilling bolters he can go out and get him some 1mm drill bits and experiment.

Not the Anon you are replying to, I got mine back in the day when the rules came out for them.

I liked that all the helmets were the same, as I think you only get 2 of the ][ variety in the new set?

I prefered all my Deathwatch to have the same helmets

Curious if it's a typo honestly. Doesn't make sense to pay the same amount of money without the marines. If the cost of the rapier laser with marines was $13 and the lone was $10 I'd understand.
>>
>>51718021
Hey thanks, IW anon.

That's some crazy bright yellow. What's your plan for the highlights on the bronze?
>>
>>51729543
the pteruge is meant to line up on the bolts at the bottom of the torso, not sure if it would quite fit with the pose there though but it looks kind awkward as is

The two laser destroyers are actually different models, trufax
>>
>>51730296
Oh is the graia the one with the screen and the marine model only has a controller?
>>
Lads, what base is used for Discs of Tzeentch? It's a jetbike and those use flying bases generally, but the Exalted Sorc box f.ex just put them floating over a regular troop base.

And how do you measure against it for shooting and CC? Base or hull? Making custom discs so I'd like to do this right.
>>
>>51730108

I'm at work, then I'll probably go home and be alone. Maybe I'll put some paint on some sisters or build more Night Lords. Idk. I bought a humidifier, which is running at home, so maybe I can touch up my lightning without the paint instantly drying on my brush.
>>
>>51730244
No, it's not a typo. You're crying because one significantly cheaper thing is the same price as another significantly cheaper thing except it comes with two additional marines. Buy the one with the marines and hey presto! You have more marines for the same cost.

At the end of the day it doesn't make any difference whatsoever because you're still saving a shitload of fucking money.

Stop being a turbo autist.

I was thinking that, I've only blu-tacked it at the moment. It's going to be a Chimera Counts-as so I was going to put in a turret like pic related but I'm not sure if that'll make the profile too high.

Good jerb. I'm assuming it's a Chimera counts-as? If so, add some spare lasguns on the side rails to represent the arrays. In either case, try adding some detailing on the plates to make it look less flat. Chaos vehicle upgrade set should do fine. A top-part should be fine considering a Chimera has a turret that makes it taller.

>>

What did you want to run it as? If it's meant to be a chimera I'd say yeah like the other anon suggested, move the flamer to a pintle setup to the side of the cab and the multi-laser or whatever would have been on real the pintle on the other side, kinda mad maxed up. I'd say cut down the divider between the cab and the back too, maybe even a door between the two or a cut out to suggest the driver could bail out through the back since the sides are kinda stationary looking.

Thanks very much, and as luck would have it I do! Cork is the meat of the base, along with slate chippings, layered with dried dirt from a plant pot (dried to avoid rotting/nasties) as well as twigs and roots. The moss of the rocks is blister-pack sponge superglued on and then torn-off.

Little bit of GW texture paint to fill in some gaps, then at the very end a few layers of weathering pigments to blend it all together.

Painting wise it was primed black, then grey, then painted mostly with washes.

They use round bases, not jetbike bases. If you're doing it as a mount, I believe it's 40mm or 50mm.
>>
>>51731654

>>
>>51731750

>>
>>51731865
Thank you. It's gonna be difficult as I don't have any lying around.

Guessing it's frowned upon to use different bases? I MUST get the appropriately sized ones?
>>
>>51731904
Official GW statement is that you can use any size of base as long as you and your opponent are both okay with it. It's in the core rulebook FAQ.

If you have a Terminator base and a short flyer stem (Jetpack-style), drill a hole in the center of the base and stick the flyer stem in it. It'll work well enough. I believe the Exalted Sorcerer does exactly that.
>>
>>51731935
Ok, that's very good to know. I only play amongst friends and have a good friendly attitude regardless so I don't see any problems arising from using a slightly different base. I never model for advantage on principle.

Can get to work now, thank you!

Here's all the options I see:
>Normal chaos marines with normal rhinos
Look like shit. Best suited for Black Legion
>Plain pre heresy MKIV armour with plain deimos rhino, all with decals
Simple yet serious. No goofy zany look like the standard marines
>MKIV Word Bearers upgrade kit on MKIV marines with deimos
The upgrades look good with the preheresy stuff but in my opinion I've never been a fan of raised iconography, especially on shoulderpads. It's too "Grey Knights-esque" for me with the raised books etc on the armour which are functionally pointless.
>with current rhino, upgraded via Word Bearers rhino kit
Further expands on the protruding iconography instead of subtle water transfers but possibly makes the most sense. Old marks of space marine armour aren't difficult to find on the battlefield, especially when it comes to chaos. Relic rhinos however are INSANELY hard to come by, moreso than dreadnoughts of the time period if I'm not mistaken. It'd make more sense for older marines to use current bolters and current rhinos, would it not? It's not like they were time warped and still use all of their old gear.
>>
>>51732147
>>51732236
you're both retards
trying to deal with or "fix" somebody who's fucked in the head is an awful, awful idea because it almost always leads to a disgusting level of codependence, which is a massive problem if/when the relationship falls apart.
we're also overpopulated and dont need more kids, and if you cant provide for those children, which a lot of people cant, then why the fuck are you bringing them into the world.
>>
>>51732474
Of course it's a huge risk and challenge to live with someone that might have mental issues rooted as deeply as not being able to have children, but that doesn't mean that those people aren't also looking for love and that you should reject them, even if everything else works between you two, just because it might lead to over-dependence and issues if you break up.
Sending a girl that you love away just because you don't want to "deal with it" is the same as a situation like having a child, not wanting to care for it and giving it up for adoption to be someone else's problem.
