When you want to introduce someone to EDH, do you lend hem a normal deck or an overpowered one so they taste the bullshit?

>When you want to introduce someone to EDH, do you lend hem a normal deck or an overpowered one so they taste the bullshit?
Give people new to the format the easiest decks possible. The last time I played with new people they were unable to cope with the preconstructed decks.
>>
>>51642085
>Give people new to the format the easiest decks possible. The last time I played with new people they were unable to cope with the preconstructed decks.

What? Were they new to Magic in general? Because even a Standard baby should grasp how simple precons are.
>>
>>51642137
They had been playing casual magic for years, I was suprised too. I had to explain to one guy the difference between planeswalker and commander several times. He was apparently confused because he got one of the C14 decks with planeswalker commanders.
>>
>>51641924
>Assuming your friends are retarded.

Why not let them choose a deck to play with? Unless you are saying these people are new to magic in general, in which case anything that gives them a good grasp on combat, phase order, and the stack.
>>
>>51642209
>He was apparently confused because he got one of the C14 decks with planeswalker commanders.
It seems to be a pretty bad case of not RTFC
>>
>alright what play do I need to do to try get enough triggers off of purph to win, maybe if I put this out, nykthos I just might have enough mana to get these out and then sac stuff to make more tokens
>HURR I HATE WHEN PEOPLE DRAW IT OUT
>Okay? Making sure I can kill this turn
>HURR JUST USE THAT CARD 3 TIMES
>Oh you mean pay 3 mana, sac two goblins to make 3 goblins with only 1 goblin on my board? Might want to read the card.
>WELL...

Love it when people feel so right then you tell them to read the card and blow them the fuck out.
>>
>>51642231

In my (kitchen table) group at least they absolutely loathe playing with cards they don't know even if they know the game, so I usually keep it simple when I want to introduce someone to EDH

That and the language barrier. God forbid there's a card in english in one deck.
>>
>>51641924
I took two of my friends that have never played magic to the LGS and we each bought 3 packs and did a small draft. It's a great way to introduce people to the concept of "Read The Fucking Cards" and they learned about combat and the stack and shit like that. Next day they were hooked and both of them bought commander 2016 precons.

Now I've made an Atraxa SuperFriends monster.
>>
Any suggestions for my Karn deck? i'm trying to make it as oppressive and unfun as possible. My meta is two friends (one plays slivers and precons. the other just plays precons) and the randos at my LGS.

No, it's because you act smug and superior about a children's card game and then feel the need to vent your frustration and seek approval from strangers on the internet

no, but it is acting smug and superior to later post about this correction on the internet to be viewed by a bunch of people you don't know who don't know you or the other person involved or even give the slightest shit about your life

I usually tell them to buy one of the 2014 or 2013 precons and i usually slap together something out of stuff i have lying around so they have a good chance of winning or I usually pull a timmy decklist from a commander vs episode and give them that list to build.

Extraplanar Lens and Doubling Cube in decks that can abuse it and haven't drawn their Metalworker yet are probably the only acceptable permanent effects. Any other deck has no business playing a late-game do nothing card while the best deck that utilizes a mana doubler uses a real one called High Tide.

UUU is an unacceptable restriction for any deck that is going to actually tutor for artifacts. Either you're multicolored and are having to bend over backwards to cast it before turn 6, or you're monoU and could be running powerful nonbasics instead. Note that doesn't apply when you're running a Time Spiral list but your slots are too tight to include this trash if you are.

Animar is an okay combo deck. Lifeblood Hydra is a worthless card in that deck. If we're calling Lifeblood Hydra a good card in the context of some fucking awful Animar/RM hydra tribal deck then fine, you win.

Animar makes it cheaper (and the Behemoth too, I've seen Animar lists posted here running it), so you don't need to tap out. I actually run both in my list, I only recently dropped the Hydra in favor of other spicy tech I wanted to play in it.

And Greater Good can eat a Krosan Grip. As I said, they're not competitive but they're not the Wood Elemental y'all are painting. EDH has space for a lot of cards to shine.

And as I was saying, those powerful sac outlets make the Hydra redundant, and not in the good consistency kind of way but the you wasted a slot for that kind of crap way.

If you're trying to say the card isn't shit but you have to suffix every post with "they're not competitive" then you might want to rethink what you're arguing.

Of the handful of Yidris lists I've seen ranging from midrange to combo to actually decent combo I cannot possibly imagine how a deck that casts cheap shit for free would ever under any circumstances require a high-cmc mana doubler.

But enlighten me.
>>
>>51645845
No I've read the full sentence, it just sounded a bit exaggerated that UUU has no place in monoU. Hell, UUUU is played in monoU a lot with Mind Over Matter. And yeah, it's a combo card but Whir can tutor combo cards as well (Whir for Otherworld Atlas, for example).

The Hydra provides more then the draw but I know lifegain is not exactly an advantage over other cards that do similar things.

>>51645845
>If you're trying to say the card isn't shit but you have to suffix every post with "they're not competitive" then you might want to rethink what you're arguing.
Ok, let me rephrase that: Those cards have purpose and can be used in tight spots or specific cases (Hydra is extra card draw in monoG, Whir puts the tutored card into the field, Behemoth ramps and provides a monarch trigger). When I evaluate cards I like to think on corner situations since Commander gives me space to run both straight answers and corner-case cards. I do understand if you are shooting straigh-up to victory the fastest way they are not the best options. I still think Whir has place in situations like that, it's TO THE BATTLEFIELD but ok, opinions.

Also, none of them are expensive, and that ALWAYS catches my eye.

Titans strength, for example.

Just build standard go-wide tokens and cheap single target cards that break when they apply to 10 creatures. If I remember correctly, one draws you a card as well as buff a single target. That applied to 10 or so is insane.

Not at home, but in satin towers in a big wooden crate.

also, I would HIGHLY advise against the way you're storing your decks, as I've seen the worst case scenario, literally watched 5 decks pour out onto the sidewalk while it was raining
>>
>>51646941
I was recommended the Satin Tower, so I bought a few. They look nice, but they damage the front sleeve across the middle, where it touches the edge of the bottom compartment. There is a distinct horizontal line on all my Commanders' sleeves after one day of carrying the decks.
>>
>>51646941
I put them into these ultra pro deckboxes, and the deckboxes into a camera suitcase. When you store them like you do, the cards get dirty really fast and the sleeves fall apart.

Zada is cheap fun and pulls wins out of nowhere. It is also inconsistent if you cant get creatures going and a total glass cannon. Also in monored of you kill everyone including yourself it counts as a win.

As an owner of 13 or so satin Towers, you're packing the cards in too tight, I'm assuming you are double sleeving and not pushing the air bubbles out.

Ascension will win the game for you if it goes unanswered, the value it generates is just ridiculous, especially after a late game boardwipe.

Cheers.

I'm using Dragon Shield Matte sleeves, and I was told those are thicker. I even tried to lay books on the top of the deck to push out the air bubbles, but it's still a very tight fit.

I'm assuming that it gets flatter after use, I recently bought all-new sleeves for my decks.

Exactly. Same goes for Fiery Gambit, target Zada with it and flip coins for each creature you control, probably generating a buttload of mana and killing everyone in the process.

OK. I'm slowly upgrading the manabase for my Zedruu WUr deck. Which land should I rather buy?

I already have the shocklands, so the fetch can get me any color, but the Prairie can enable turn 1 R and turn 2 WW play.

Help a newbie out.

>trying to tell other people their fun is wrong
When playing magic I want a mental challange, crazy complicated stack interactions, I want to see powerful cards and have fun with friends who are into the same shit
3 out of those 4 things you usually don't get when playing against timmys creature based deck.
If you want casual fun it's alright I don't have a problem with that, I'm merely telling uou that whir of intervention isn't as gokd as you think.

>>51648422
Go ahead m8. I hope you have fun!

Here's the pic of my crate.

And the way I deal with air bubbles after a fresh doublesleeve (I use matte dragon shields and kmc perfect fits) is by CAREFULLY compressing the deck with my hands.

VERY. CAREFULLY.

I have gorilla hands , so I can hold the entire deck between both of them, and slowly ( with pressure!) push out the air bubbles from the entire deck

I don't get how thats even a question

Honestly, I'd recommend you pick up a Flooded Strand.
>>
>>51648691
That's really neat! Did you build that?
>>
>>51648716
Because I'm worried that the Prairie's inability to tap for colored mana on its own can be a real drawback.

Christ, no.
It was my grandmother's, she saw the shitty cardboard box I was using before, and gave me her old crate as a gift.

Love you, grammy
>>
>>51648768
I'd trim the heath. I'm not a fan of running off-color fetches if all you have is the shocks; once you have your Tundra and your Plateau and your Tropical Island start subbing in your one-color fetches.

If you've already got Strand, I'd say go for Prairie. Unless your mana base is all kinds of fucked up, you're not going to be stuck with Prairie only making colorless mana often enough to worry about it.
>>
Is playing EDH online fun? There are a couple decks I want to try but they involve way too much shuffling for me to be arsed to play them with paper.
>>
>>51648602
Filters are questionable in 3c+, if you start a hand with only islands and rugged prairie you can't use it where other duals would work.

What do you have that costs WW or RR?
>>
>>51648001
Pyroblast, Red elemental blast, Dualcaster Mage and Fork all work to protect combos in monored.
>>
>>51648787
Thanks.

I also run the Heath as a way fetch up Mistveil Plains, a key piece of my main engine, so it's useful beyond fetching me mana.
>>
>>51648821
That's fair. I'd still advise Prairie over Mire.

>>
>>51648986
As many as possible. Basics and 20 cent dual lands are all you need most of the time.

What are some good budget lands for Vela?
>>
>>51648986
12-16 in 2 color
9-15 in 3 color
As many as it takes to get up to 35-40 lands after utility/auto includes in 1 color

Never played 4 or 5 color decks.
>>
>>51648937
If you can come up with a non-retarded solution on how to codify such rule, I'm all for it.

>>51649032
"as many as possible" is currently 10 for my 3-colored deck. Dammit.

They're better than land that always enter tapped with negligible or no effects, but they actually tend to get worse the better your mana base gets.

There are a few lands that are godlike. These are far from them. They're serviceable.

I think you might just have a bad mana base. Honestly, the first 4 cards you should put in a 2+ color deck is Command Tower, City of Brass, Mana Confluence and Reflecing Pool. After that you start looking at duals. But those 4 plus rocks should pretty much guarantee that you don't get color screwed.

As for arguing about semantics, please enjoy your stay in for chan dot gov
