Happens to the best of us. You could have made the thread yourself.

Anyways, extra turns are dumb and gay. So are mindslaver effects. It would be easier, and more fun, if the cards said "you win in an elaborate way, go jerk off for ten minutes while everyone finishes up".

>Animar
Easily the best 'oops all permanents' commander around. Animar.dec is very straightforward, and very powerful.

>Riku
Basically a UG deck in playstyle, but splashing some red for some spells that are broken with it (read: combos). But you can also build her as a standard UG goodstuff value commander and he's fun.

>Maelstrom
"Oops all permanents" but with a dose of RNG. Can get very spicy if you run a lot of effects that return him to hand. A big, random, (sometimes) EXTREMELY powerful wrecking ball. Good shit.

>Surrak
Keep him in your pocket if some fag tries to Baral the table. Other than that, nothing too special here.

>Yasova
Voltron that works on a slightly different axis. Great colours to protect your voltron, too. Good shit if you're into this stuff.

>Intet
lul

My only advice for RUG is to try and keep it as non-UG as possible, cause you've probably played it before and its boring
>>
From the last thread, can someone give me a quick overview of the RUG commanders? Wanna pick one up and brew something. I like doing stupid fun shit if that helps

i own maelstrom and i like him a lot since he tends to play a little different depending on what you cascade into. it's never not exciting to cast him since you never know what you'll get.

he isn't really even that overpowered in casual games since he's very telegraphed about his wincons. if your table is smart about prioritizing threats then a maelstrom player will just be a fun archenemy to fight. in comparison someone like animar can easily just combo out and instawin when he gets into a good board position

"hoist with his own petard" is a Shakespeare phrase you fucking mongoloid retard. It means to be undone by your own plan, or more precisely, to cause a bombmaker to be blown up by his own bomb. In that anon's story, he lost to his own Mycosynth Lattice, his petard in this case.

That's all you had to do anon. Shakespeare is only popular because he's canonical, don't be condescending. I'd be more impressed by a quality sci-fi reference, or some Kafka to be honest with you.

>>
>>51631106
Oh, I actually assumed it was something along those lines.

As for the 4c precons, they are probably the best designed commander product so far, excluding the land bases. They are the same quality as the commander precons previously printed, which is a fucking joke considering the decks are 4 color.

Obviously, you will always get something better if you decide to make it yourself from scratch, but that will never change.

Why not voltron her up? Toss it out early, play as much removal as you can, and lock down your opponent with some dirty artifact stax. She seems awesome in the sense that your opponent needs to expend 3 blockers to fully block all the damage. You just need things to make your stuff more intimidating. Double strike would work wonders here, maybe with warstorm surge, hellrider, and five alarm fire.

Knowing that Shakespeare wrote dense, pretentious shit for rich people means you're a plebeian.
Knowing that Shakespeare is unoriginal, pun-stuffed, crowd-pleasing entertainment means you're a step above -- what some could call "patrician," relatively speaking.

Knowing of Shakespeare's low-class appeal while being able to appreciate it along with his pacing, syntax, plotting, banter, and themes is apotheosis. Watching people of the first two attitudes fight is like watching ants fight from my perch atop a mountain. You are an infant to me.

I'm saying you're a "patrician," in that you are higher than plebeians who think Shakespeare is cultured but high class. But that in the context of "not being able to enjoy Shakespeare," your title is little better than theirs, and wanting compared to that of one who can enjoy it.
Sad, but true.

I really wanted to call you a dick and a charlatan, but you aren't, your point is correct. There's a fundamental difference between understanding something on an intellectual level and liking certain types of canonical literature. I personally don't like to read Shakespeare, because it wasn't meant to be read. Listening and reading along is a completely different experience, and you can often infer through syntax some of the more archaic nuances.

That being said, it's boorish when people flex their derivative opinions in the hope that it will make them look more competent. I can't stand when people glorify canonical literature by virtue of it's standing without understanding its merit. Knowing of Shakespeare, reading Shakespeare and studying Shakespeare are three different things. To put it bluntly, check yo'self before you wreck yo'self, if your goal is to chirp nuanced subject matter.

Think about it like this like a 1v1, in a 4 player game your "opponent" is getting a free ancestral vision and you cant even draw a card to keep them off of you, where with wreckage you're competing against half the card draw so you can actually benefit from the protection.

Pain Lands are never a bad thing when you start with a 40 life total. Fast lands and man lands might be good too. Every Yidris player I've seen so faar just does combo storm and most of their mana comes from shit like Dark Ritual and Seething Song so that's also a route.

>>
>>51636313
Our playgroup avoids playing effects that cause these scenarios in the first place.

Like Sneak Attacking a guy with an annihilator on turn 3-4 effectively removes them from the game and forces him to watch the rest of the table duke it out.

You absolutely can. Commander damage is also tracked per creature, so you'll need to connect a few times (that is, if they've already taken 10 damage from your commander, doing 11 with theirs won't kill them; it has to be 21 combat damage from the same Commander).

>>51636313
The answer is two fold, first you (and your group) have to have decks that actually do something. If you all play control and have a low count of win cons, it's nobodies fault but yours that games last for years and if your the first to go your going to be waiting a while.

Second off is that people tend to bitch about a lot of the good ways to win the game quickly: infinite combos, craterhoof, infect, cyclonic rift, whatever. If it actually ends the game people tend to say it's not in the spirit of EDH or some horseshit. Not having games last longer than an hour doesn't mean you aren't playing EDH, it just means you get to play more games of it.
>>

That is a very small boon, considering as creatures they are horribly overcosted.

It's also MASSIVELY outweighed by their vulnerability compared to non-creature Anthems.

That's why you don't play Beastmaster until you have 5 creatures to swing with. Every turn it manages to stay on the board is just gravy.

Usually if I'm dropping Beastmaster, it's the same turn it comes online, and if someone has an answer, they have until combat's over to deal with it. If they don't, the game is over then and there.

She can be used as a mana bank for other creatures sort of, but infinites require pretty much 2 of those lands that tap for 2 mana and a Panharmonicon.

>>
>>51638594
Why food chain? How about a wincon, like Altar of Dementia or Blasting Station?
>>
>>51638685
Because the retarded discussion is about how Derevi and Food Chain are a bad combo for some reason. Tazri and Pross work with Food Chain far better, but it's not like she has godawful synergy with it.
>>
>>51638085
To echo everyone else here, yes, it's great removal. most edh decks are only 25-45% creatures, and even if the manifested card is a creature, if you used the card right, they probably would rather have had whatever you got rid of. It's not without the potential for backfire, but your odds are good.
>>
>>51638722
If you have to put in entirely different cards to ACTUALLY combo with Food Chain, and then pour that mana into Derevi, she absolutely has godawful synergy with it.
>>
>>51638722
Others already realised that Derevi didn't combo with Food Chain, why can't you?
>>
>>51638594
This seems like a waste of everyone's time
>>
>>51638756
You know that's how tazri works, right?
>>
>>51639022
So, here's the thing.

1) Tazri is in 5 colors, giving you access to every single 1-drop mana dork to curve out with that combo ASAP.

2) The Food Chain combo itself gives you infinite mana that you can only spend on creatures. Assuming all you have is FC + Griffin/Scourge and your Commander, Derevi can generate infinite 'normal' mana, but you need a FOURTH piece to win. That's an awful lot of moving parts that do jack shit on their own, and if your deck is focused on that combo... it's bad.

3) Tazri wins with just that combo, because she can tutor up your win-con, and then trigger it to win.

If you just jam Food Chain into Derevi, it's gonna be worthless 99% of the time. The component pieces aren't useful alone, and there's only a handful of ways for you to funnel that mana into a game-winning play in her colors. And if you specifically build around that combo, you're running a less reliable, more easily disrupted version of FCT.

The original fucking argument was that Derevi had no synergy with Food Chain. It's not optimal for either, but it works.
>>
>>51639124
She doesn't. She has no more synergy with it than any other commander. If your 'synergy' with it is "I can use Derevi to convert the infinite creatures-only mana into infinite whatever-mana, which I can then pour into the actual win-con", then she doesn't have synergy with the fucking card.

I think you might be autistic, or English isn't your first language, buddy. The keyword is "none." Nothing. 0. 0 synergy would be stuff like throwing RiP in your reanimator or something like that. It works, it's a shit use of both, but it at least works.
>>
>>51639119
The symmetry of his ability is kinda off putting to me. Is giving your opponents card draw worth it? Granted, giving them inventive to not attack me is good, but if it helps someone combo off faster, it makes no odds.
>>
>>51639240
Here's the thing about symmetrical effects in Magic:

They never are. Your deck is built to exploit that 'symmetrical' effect; their decks aren't.
>>
>>51639240
>Edric
>Elfball

Edric is basically, "attack with unblockable dude. draw into answer or turn skip" repeat. Edric will get you slaughtered by anyone that's good, because of that ridiculous consistency. And to be honest? It's a boring deck to play.

I'd rather go with Momir if you have to go UG Elfball. Edric is asking to get your shit handed to you way harder than Momir.
>>
>>51639240
How tuned edric drcks work is thst play lots of cheap flying dweebs and time magic, swing, draw a bunch of cards, take an extra turn, and repeat until people are dead ot you have a million cards. Your deck is built around not only getting the most draws with tons of small evasive creatures, but also taking turns to get more draws than the opponents.

If you want somethibg like Edric thats a weaker but does a similat thyg, Tymna is a good WB card (better than ravos imo) that is built around in a similar way, and can even just be made into diet edric with kydele or thrasios.
>>
>>51639337
Aalso necer thought about 8t but with extra combat phade abilities you can use in the main phase 2, you can use thosr in additional extra turns if you want to get more draws and lkke kill yourself using tymna with kraum as a free evasive dude in the command zone ti trigger her or ludevic who nets an extra draw during each extra turn (doesnt work with extra combats hough). Never seen it but its an idea.

Play blue, kill them before they can go off, play hate, or just outadvantage them so massively that non-infinite turns aren't enough.

I'm not every deck is Edric which does everything.

when a group power level gets high enough, sol ring will basically just end the game right there

although if you go even higher power level than that then everyone will be dropping mana crypts and mana vaults all over the place and it won't matter as much since everyone intends to win at turn 3 but at that point everyone loses anyway

Not everyone has the same opinion of what is fun and what isn't, my playgroup avoids all combo, but don't crack down on those who do.

We also run all the "fast mana" there is, but we still have fun, even if we can win turn 3 once in a blue moon.

As for me I like tuning a deck to its best which means the others in my playgroup do as well. It's an interesting exercise trying to make the best version of an oddball strategy which will naturally include any broken anything I can use.
>>
>>51639784
sadly that often ends up being

>it also has a doomsday pile and a bunch of tutors for it because thats the easiest way to make it better
>>
>>51639800
There's no problem with that. It's 99 cards. Contrary to popular belief actual "competitive" games don't actually end on turn 3 or 4 that often and do actually have to do things, barring some all in decks like Jeleva or something. Sometimes cards besides doomsday have to do things. It's interesting to figure out cards are the best for me.

I'm not sure if you're being intentionally pedantic or what but I think the intention was pretty obviously that they don't "always" end the game on turn 3-4 and not that they literally never do. I'd like to assume you aren't being that intentionally dense so I'm at a loss for another explanation. I've seen Tazri almost win on turn 2.

High tier commander games are a rush to assemble your combo. That most often happens between turns 2 and 4. Yes, there are outliers, but most games end that quickly. They win through interaction, with a handful of redundant parts in case you try and strip their hand.

They do end that quickly, "that often". It's not an exaggeration

nothing wrong with building and playing competitively, but to play in such a way where winning is PRIORITY #1 in a format built to be "Magic: the mario partying" with tuned to fuck combo decks is pretty fucking stupid.

another question about the commander that comes with pre made decks? why are they so fucking huge, how am i supposed to sleeve that?

They come in two printings, the larger ones and a regular sized one you can sleeve in a normal sleeve. You can get oversized sleeves for the larger ones though if you want.
>>
why wouldn't derevi combo with food chain?

isn't that infinite mana?

>>
>>51641122
>>51641131
why do they even bother with the oversized cards?
>>
>>51641122
I like being able to keep my commander in the same box as my deck, but other than that, not really.
>>
>>51641143
Good question.
>>
>>51641117
Because food chain says "use this mana only to cast creature spells" and the 4 mana thing is an ability and not casting. If it said "use this mana to cast creatures or in abilites of creatures" it would work. If you have a land that taps for 2 different colours.
>>
I need some cards to help deal with early aggro in mono-blue, preferably being useful at most stages of the game. I'm thinking about just throwing in a bunch of defenders like Fog Bank.
>>
>>51641252
I happen to like cheap single target bounce spells. Most notable and obvious in the "good early and late" camp would be Into the Roil. Aetherize and Wash Out are also useful off the top of my head. I personally wouldn't play defenders since they are a little too do-nothing.
>>
>>51641300

Also maybe it's a little too late at 5 mana to disturb "early aggro" but Evacuation is pretty powerful too.
