Also, post dank tribal tech now that Metallic Mimic is a thing

I will admit to knowing almost nothing about MtG artists. There's a few pieces I like enough that I'd want to have them on a playmat, though.

After Dovin Baan sabotages the Hope of Ghirapur, Chandra and Gideon barge into the Aether Spire. Chandra uses the "technique" of essentially achieving nuclear fusion on a smaller scale by concentrating all of her flames into a marble-sized sphere, and Gideon shields the both of them from the explosion. They survive both the explosion and the building collapsing because Gideon is FUCKING INVINCIBLE, unknowingly almost killing Liliana in the midst of her duel with Tezzeret.

>Do you have a favorite MTG artist or era of design? Do you go out of your way to find specific artwork sometimes?
I think Chris Rahn is my favorite? I dunno, I really just like his work and rarely look at his cards and think the work is bad. His muted colors are nice to lead into bursts of bright color that he usually incorporates. Howard Lyon is really cool too, his works remind me of stuff with a heavy influence of renaissance era oil paintings. Christopher Moeller is another one that I really like the looks of, his works tend to just be colorful and full of interesting shapes and lineworks. Oh! Karl Kopinski is cool too. I like his sketches and muddy thick paintings

I used to really like Igor Kierulyk and Johannes Voss but I feel they have had some recent pieces that just fall flat or look like it was done with no passion or just laziness or an incredibly impossible deadline.

As for older eras of card art, Carl Critchlow is cool. Kev Walker is solid and he's still at it today. Guay and Neilson obviously.

>people who think that completely shutting off most other decks is fun

That Guy at my LGS plays yidris chaos with possibility storm for no other reason than 'It's fun!!!' He also has knowledge pool in the same deck, for the same reason. There's a difference between building Mishra and finding one of very few ways to exploit his ability, and jamming a card into a chaos deck because it's fun.
>>
>>51423642
that does sound fun on occasion

>>51423599
>Most interesting
Jace. He's come a long way from the typical cocky blue mage he was originally.

>Least interesting
Nissa. When Gideon's more interesting than you are, you have a problem.

>Greatest strength and weaknesses
The greatest strength is creating unity throughout blocks by having a group of protagonists, Weatherlight style. Greatest weakness is that, frankly, some of the stories are shit, and the amount of plot armor our protagonists have makes things boring.

>Writing practices
Biggest thing I've noticed is that pacing is hit or miss. Characterization is sometimes iffy as well. Working on fixing those two would go a long way.

>Best/worst writer
Off the top of my head, Alison Luhrs and Chris L'Etoile are great, but there are plenty of good writers among the team. As for worst, I'm not much a fan of Kimberly Kreines.
>>
>>51423599
>Who is currently the most interesting/well-written character of the Gatewatch?
Jace, most development by far. He's not just a colour archetype guy.

>Who is the least interesting/worst-written character of the Gatewatch?
Nissa? I like her nods to being a loner that is weirded out by company though.
Chandra's constant IAMREDAAAAAAAA, annoys me a bit too.
They all need more time.

>What has been the greatest strength and weakness of post-BFZ storytelling?
I actually like following the gatewatch in an overarching plot (I've seen a lot of hate for it)

>What writing practices would improve the overall quality of post-BFZ storytelling?
Maybe just me being an aut, but they (Chandra especially) talk like people talk in modern IRL times.
I think it's a bit weird, I dunno. Not too much of a problem though. Bad explaination, sorry.

>Who is the best/worst current writer for WotC?
Chris L'Etoile has done some great stuff reccently.

It's not that the card's a problem, it's that the card is obnoxious and playing it for the wrong reasons is doubly so. I didn't drive to the store to play RNGfest 2017. If I wanted that, I'd play Hearthstone and save the gas money.

Possibility Storm isn't broken, it's just stupid. It's nowhere near even Prophet of Kruphix's power level.

Phyrexian Plaguelord

Most bro artist is Jesper Myrfors. Goes to a shit ton of GPs and cons, always excited to sign shit, always loves talking to fans. rk post is cool as hell too.

Worst artist is Peter Mohrbacher. Story comes courtesy of a friend.

>Mohrbacher is instantly just annoyed that people are coming to him for MtG related reasons instead of his other art

Personally, I met Eric Deschamps, Noah Bradley, and Terese Nielsen when I went to GP DC last year. Really hate Deschamps signature but I don't think he was being a dick, he just has a very distinct signature.

It needs at least 2 counters to get anything worthwhile, even for utility dudes. Also you talked about dropping it early, but if that was the case all sorts of decks would run it if it was worthwhile, but it's not, and Hannah is focused on recurring it, and somehow that's... Good for them? I just don't see it. It seems worse in every way compared to Treachery, and even control magic.

Can an actual Hannah player defend this card? I'm not trying to spike out but I fail to see how its even better than a budget option like control magic, let alone the better versions of it.
>>
>>51426760
>Also you talked about dropping it early, but if that was the case all sorts of decks would run it if it was worthwhile
Not all sorts of decks can recur it like Hanna. Also playing Allure doesn't exclude playing Treachery and Control Magic, most lists with Allure probably play both too.
>>
>>51426760
Not a Hanna player, but Control Magic effects can negated if you can remove the enchantment, Legacy's Allure doesn't leave anything like that lying around, no strings attached.

Anyone wanna rate my Slobad list? I'm pretty happy with it, only thing I'm missing is a Workshop, and I don't expect to be getting one of those anytime soon.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/slobad-stax-3/
>>
>>51426837
But if they remove the enchantment you can just get it back with Hanna. That's kinda the point of her.

If you drop Legacy's Allure early than it can be alright, but late in the game it's really damn close to a dead draw. When everyone's playing big creatures you're not going to wait 4+ turns to take something, you'd rather draw one of your many Control Magic effects.

Also I've tried Hanna and she seems way too slow and very mana intensive for a deck that can't produce a lot of mana. You're stuck relying on artifacts for the most part and you're still spending so much time setting up mana that you really don't even start the game until much later.
>>
>>51426799
It's recurring it that I find so bad. Let's say they do get it off turn 2 (I don't want to talk about how bad it is as a top deck turn 7 or something, that's just sad) and you wait around 2 turns past that and somebody runs an Oracle of mul duya out and you get to steal that. ( Once again, this is like the best possible scenario for the card). So you go ahead and recur it, because that's the only reason you run the stupid thing in the first place. Turn 5 you lay it down again and... What, you get your five manas worth at like turn 9, if that?

I get what your saying about it being an extra version of control magic, but maybe you don't realize how many of them there are. Check gatherer or something man, there are versions that give infect, take any permanent type, etc.

If I were to rate control magic effects it wouldn't be number 1 or 2 or number 3 even, it's wayyy down in the double digits, and I just don't get why it's mentioned like some spicy tech.

Cheapest printing is like $10 on SCG.

It gets played in Bant Eldrazi IIRC, also it's a land that hasn't been reprinted in a while. Those tend to start creeping up until they get a reprint.

DESU you're only paying a couple cents less when you go to a competitor and they have better selection, pretty fast shipping (I live in NJ and they usually get my stuff there in 2-3 days), and good customer service.

I used to do TCGPlayer but their selection is wonky at times and their "cart optimization" is a scam.

I mostly try to buy stuff from my LGS (all their singles are 25% off SCG price so they're the cheapest place around) but otherwise I do use SCG mostly. You're a true kike if you're obsessed with saving a few shekels using TCGPlayer.

Why is Gideon oppressing Chandra?
>>
>>51427622
Gideon was gifted the spear from Heliod to defend the city. In an act of hubris, he saw Erebos (who was sending harpies to attack the city) in the distance. He threw the spear at Erebos, Erebos deflected it back at him, and then the spear killed all his friends while he survived.
>>
>>51427622
I think he's talking about when Gideon was tasked to kill a titan created by Erebos. After it was killed, Erebos appeared himself and Gideon threw the spear, which Erebos deflected. Gideon was able to protect himself with his magic while all his allies died
>>
>>51427622
If you haven't noticed, the gods really can't keep track of their legendary artifacts.

Kiora has the bident of thassa, erebos had the spear of heliod.

Blinkmoth Well and Phyrexia's Core alleviate some of your stax artifacts. The Well can make Static/Winter Orb pretty one sided and Phyrexia's Core is an "oh shit" button if you find yourself buried under the stax.

I've... become a Johnny.

I always thought I was a Timmy. I ran stompy gruul decks, I liked to hit people really hard with fancy things, and I always ran midrangey aggro type cards. Lately, every deck I've built is centered around elaborate combos/interactions. I don't know when it happened, but I shifted from a Craw Wurm meta, to a weenies meta, and I'm just not the same magic player I once was. Now my decks durdle until t4-t5 then combo off, or play some elaborate janky shenanigans until I maybe win.

How do I reconcile things? What kind of things do Johnny's build? What do I even think is fun anymore? Help me anons, you're my only hope.

I had the same struggle recently, and I decided to just embrace it. I went from playing Zurgo and Goblin tribal to Experiment Kraj and Endrek Sahr. And the thing is, I win more and I'm having more fun. I think what finally turned me was having my Zurgo countered enough times in a single game that I literally couldn't cast him with every land and mana rock in the deck. I realized that they weren't going to let me hit them, that me and the rest of the group were playing a very different game and I needed to adapt.

Be mindful of the wording. If the spell says "target creature deals damage", with infect it's infect damage (like with Chandra's Ignition) or "x spell deals damage" such as with combat trick cards like Deflecting Palm, the source is Deflecting Palm.
Be mindful of what actually does the damage and also keep in mind that damage and life loss is different.
>>
>>51434593
Because it's only "good" in commander. It's not amazing. You get enchantments that give your shit hexproof permanently, and in green you can ramp up to them very quickly. The indestructibility is a bit better, but even so, it's just not incredible.
>>
>>51435175
i guess thats true
>>
>>51434979
Actually, specific question. Do you think that Liliana, The Last Hope would be good for this deck? She's 3 mana, can plunk down small creatures, and recur whatever creatures get blown up. I'd never intend to ult her, but she seems solid.
>>
>>51435582
I think you are underestimating it, or you always play UGx. Green being able to protect its board from everything at instant speed is pretty big. Most creature based decks I know of do everything they can to protect against wraths, they run dauntless escort, selfless spirit, Boros charm, etc.

This is better than every other version of saving your board made so far.
>>
>>51435874
It doesn't protect from everything, and we both know that. The card is good, but it's not going to be a staple in EDH.
You can ramp very easily in edh, and ramp into cards that have a bigger impact and also protect your board. Decks will run the card, but it's not going to be a card people sing praises about.

It doesn't protect against merciless eviction, hallowed burial, and half of rift. But it is better than the 3 other staples I already mentioned that don't grant hexproof.

If a card is better than the current staples, it's going to be a staple.

If you don't run the other cards I mentioned, you probably aren't playing creature based decks in those colors.

Monowhite isn't that good. SRAM makes it better.

If you want mono-colored, I would go black.
>>
For those who run sliver tribal, is it worth it? I love the synergy and how they all work together but at the same time in a multiplayer format it seems like you would always be targeted first and would have a hard time surviving with even three other players. This wouldnt really be an issue but the cost of the mana base and support cards make me a little wary of buying into it. I dont want to put the money into it just to have my shit pushed in every game and not be able to play it for all the hate.
>>
>>51437064
Most people take 5C tribal a bit less seriously. If you're really worried, ask if your friends are cool with you just proxying the deck for a few games, seeing how it performs. If it works well, start buying the pieces, if it doesn't, you saved a lot of money.

I know TCC has a video on 5C manabases you can check out. I run Karona, False God and I only run the 5 KTK fetches and a set of shocks. I make do the rest of the way. It's expensive, but I know I can switch out the cards for other decks if I need to, and shocks and fetches will always be useful even if you pull the deck apart for parts.
>>
>>51437138
And by make do the rest of the way, I mean I don't run the ZEN fetches. I still run the checklands and Shadowlands, and other ways to make sure i hit my colors.

>>
>>51436610
You really really have to learn how to build a deck properly if you want to master monowhite. Without access to a large amount of card draw and mana ramp in color, you will have to rely on artifacts, creature abilities, and a very limited amount of tools to bring yourself to victory.

White has all the answers. It just can't get them quick enough.

It depends on what you're trying to do, really. I go all in on the 2 power or less weenie train, so I only run a few utility creatures that are anything higher. If you're more of an ETB, token, or general beatdown deck, they're both pretty good.

As someone who started out with that deck and still uses it and upgrades it, it's pricey depending on where you want to take it. Mono white can sort of keep up in the mana race with other fast decks but card draw is where it loses gas. Luckily the deck comes with skull clamp and turns nahiri into a card draw machine once clamp hits the field. It can be fun but you kind of need Swords, at least feast and famine and a batterskull. Stoneforge does work. I feel Nahiri is one of the more slept on mono white commanders. She's capable of a strong board wipe strategy and putting dudes on the field to recover from a wipe to keep form of pressure. Also that new mana rock turns your Swords into rocks which is cool

Just be ready to drop some dosh.

Hello /edhg/

I have a problem. The memery about UGx has turned me into a dedicated Mardu player. I currently have Marduchesa but am tempted to build Alesha HateBears and Zurgo voltron. My problem is I traded most everything I had card wise for the Mardu Staples. I love Queen Cheesey but it ain't easy. How do I build the other decks with out tearing Chesa apart?

Arjun doesn't have much stretch in terms of design space; I've played against a few at my LGS and at friend's place and they are all basically the same gameplan; but the way (s?)he plays is so much fun and there's several ways to do it I built one myself.

Basically, you want to have some sizeable ramp (To cast your commander and for low cost spam), some mid-game disruption to make sure the sphinx sticks, and wincons based off of handcycling. Shit like Al's Archive/Thought Reflection/Geth's Grimoire + Wheels with a Lab Maniac on the field,or a chasm skulker, or my personal favorite diviner's wind attached to just about anything. You can also put in a mill sub-theme if you can space for Jace's erasure and tutelage. As the game draws on, decking everyone but yourself with a well-timed windfall is also not unheard of.

Arjun plays like a much less powerful, but way funner Niv Mizzet. You're basically playing pic related every time you cast a spell, and get to play some interesting cards to stop yourself from decking yourself when you have a draw doubler out. Obstinate familiar? Check. Sundial of the Infinite? Check. I've only ever had to play a wheel to reduce my handsize ever once, and it was in this deck. Other neat tech is the flash enabling artifact so if you get some goodstuff in that's not necessary instants you can chuck them out before losing your hand, and a graveyard recycler like a titan in case you pimp out the deck with shit like dream halls or good wheels.

All in all, it's a fun deck with a very interesting play-style and arguably the two most interactive colors in the format. I never feel like I'm just solitaring my wincon in this deck because there's several ways to win and each has varying levels of interaction with opponents which is nice. Do not expect to be hyper competitive however (Unless you shill out for a bulk of format staples), but in multi you would be surprised how often Arjun gets underestimated if there's shit like Ghave out

>>
>>51442500
Titania is really fun but you need A LOT of nonbasics. My deck runs 12 Forests out of 42 lands and most of the deck ain't cheap. Tappedout's calculations has mine at around $900 on TCGPlayer (albeit with some sporadic expensive foils).

Generally elfball decks are pretty cheap, you have Ezuri, Freyalise, Rishkar, Yeva, etc. Landbase is cheap, really the only super necessary nonbasics are Nykthos and Wirewood Lodge. Elves are cheap, and if you can't afford Craterhoof there's plenty of cheap finishers or you can go with some sort of combo elves deck.

If you are interested in Titania though, here's my stax list: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/titania-greenback-stax/
>>
>>51442560
I like freyalise as she shit all over my sydri jank deck but is she really good for elfball?
>>
>>51442624
I played her and she's good if you want an elf deck that can survive through the long game. The plan is to play her real early and then ult her in a couple of turns to refuel. She's very hard to deal with if you can land her on turn 3 or so, and the fact she makes blockers helps defend her.
>>
>>51442644
I'll probably bight the bullet and buy her precon.
>>
>>51442708
You can upgrade the deck pretty decently for like $30. Just cut all the Titania stuff out, Titania is only really good when she's heavily built around and having a couple of lands that sac themselves is not nearly enough.
>>
>>51442763
Does she work well with general elfball ezuri stuff or does she want things in particular, i know i want token multipliers and things that want things entering the battlefield but what would be some nice tech for her?
>>
>>51442796
You'll run her pretty much the same, if anything maybe Doubling Season to double her counters and the tokens she makes.

But she's pretty generic for elfball, you could probably swap any of like the 5 elfball generals in her spot and the deck would remain pretty much the same.

My favorite artist and era are actually pretty far apart. Nils Hamm is my favorite artist, because he tends to go into color spectrums most artists don't dare and he's amazing at doing grimy/otherworldy/primal feeling stuff.
My favorite era is the Rath cycle, because of its muted tone and painterly feel and its art direction didn't yet entirely shy away from some more abstract illustrations.

Mikaeus + Triskelion is the best mono B doomsday combo.

The piles I've seen are:

15 mana, but you can sac your lands to pay for it:

Infernal Contract, Rain of Filth, Mikaeus, Triskelion
This one also frees up a slot, if you want to protect yourself, Defense Grid is a great option.

10 mana:

Moonlight Contract, Victimize, Reassembling Skeleton, Mikaeus, Triskelion

2 mana, 3 cards in hand: (And +$500)
Bazaar of Bagdhad, Hellcarver Demon, Shallow Grave, Mikaeus, Triskelion

Like 8 more lands.

You're also missing the single best relentless rats card in the game. Pic related.

Your enchantments are also pretty lackluster, (Brutality, Visions, Gravestorm), replace it with some good removal spells, like Murder, Doom Blade, Go for the Throat, Tragic Slip.

There's also a new Adaptive Automaton that came out in Aether Revolt, Metallic Mimic, makes all rats ETB with a +1/+1 counter.

Honestly, there are slight rules differences between edh and commander (use of elder dragons) the reason people still call it EDH is courtesy for the creators of the format.

Besides, wizards of the coast branding it "commander" just doesn't sound as cool as EDH

DESU I just didn't have a Greater Good on hand and Crossroads I've been torn on. The deck really doesn't win by making a ton of creatures and then swinging and Akroma's Memorial has proved to work well.

Sometimes the color fixing can prove to be an issue but it's pretty easy to get enough green mana. There's like 20 green sources in the mana base and I'd cut a lot more lands for fetches if I had them.

Is this underrated colorless card draw? Only two more mana than Greed and only one more mana to activate. All colorless, though.

Honestly, that's not too awful. Especially in a white or colorless deck.

The only better colorless draw I can think of is Mind's Eye.

Skullclamp and Memory Jar!

Skullclamp is amazing as long as you have weenie creatures or a sac outlet. Not so much otherwise.
