What's your favorite non-combat archetype?

Scholars. But not scholars that are too busy and get pissed when you try and talk to them. Laid back ones, that'll have tea with you while you shoot the shit on science/philosophy/religion/magic.

Any resources homebrew or official if I want to do a monster campaign?
>>
>>51398089
Volo's has some not very impressive stats for playing as most of the go to humanoid monsters.
>>
>>51398089
Volo's guide to Monsters has some monster races for creating PCs.
>>
What are some of the best Druid spells upto 6th level, I've picked Land Druid and realising it's so much weaker than moon I'm looking to squeeze a bit of extra value and want to make sure I've not overlooked some golden value spells or ones with good usage.
>>
>>51398276
Heat Metal is great for fucking over anything wearing metal armour. If you want your gm to tell you to fuck off you can ask about casting Polymorph to turn into a half-dragon giant ape.
>>
Beyond flavour text, how can I go about differentiating 53 deities with 5e's handful of domains? Is there still any reason for deities to have favoured weapons? Have there been any domains introduced in UA's that I may have missed?
>>
Listen up. https://discord.gg/ewSen23 This is the new official discord of 5eg. The other one is run by a pussy who lets cancer fester and didn't even have any discussion of D&D. :^)
>>
>>51398352
Don't really see any non-flavour way of differentiating that many gods. Why do you have so many? For the weapons, again only really a flavour thing.
>>
>>51398410
The butthurt is fucking real
>>
Want to put players through a series of tests to win MacGuffin. 6 tests, one each on STR, CON, DEX, INT, WIS & CHA. Got the basic ideas for the first 3, and CHA. What are some good tests of INT and WIS? Preferably that can be confined to a room.
>>

>differentiating 53 deities
How do you differentiate them right now?
>>
WHEN'S THRI-KREEN?
>>
>>51398425
Riddles seem like the obvious choice for Wisdom. How to go about that depends on whether your group likes actually solving riddles themselves or not.
>>
>>51398424
No, the better discord is fucking real. And you probably shouldn't be a part of it anyways.

>>51398337
Crawford and Mearls have both stated that as a template, Half-Dragon creatures do not have existing statblocks, and as such are not an option that's in the players' hands.

Jesus, I thought my 21 was hard to manage, and 2 of those are dead with 6 of them using homebrew domains, and 2 of them using a UA domain.

Fair enough, anon. Just tired of seeing half-dragon cheese paraded around as a legitimate answer when it's just as autistic as Bardic Horsecasting. And trust me, I know autism when I see it.

Check out We Be Goblins! I gave it a look over for ideas of a similar monster campaign I want to run. Its PF, but it'd be easy to convert it for 5e.

/tg/, some friends and I decided to start up a game of this.

>>
>>51398798
Anything.
>>
>>51398798

Get a paladin for Charisma and a Wizard, because the fucking game runs around wizards unfortunately.
>>
>>51398425
Assuming the STR, DEX and CON ones involve making skill checks, make some sort of riddle that involves one of the INT skill checks to be able solve. Something easy, but a character has to recall the correct lore/god/nature or investigate to find all of the puzzle pieces.
>>
>>51398907

For all the people screaming wizard...
Will a Sorcerer work instead?
>>
>>51398853
>That being said, somebody with decent charisma and a bow would cover the rest of your bases in one fine package.
So, like a Bard Bowman?
>>
How do you justify multiclassing personally, either as a DM or player?
I mean there should be an organic story reason sure but the DM's going to say right-o.
>>
>>51398968
No, you need someone to do INT checks for you, and wizard is the only real INT character
>>
>>51398968
Don't start this discussion. Please for the love of god.
>>
>>51398968
No. Wizards can replace sorcerers. Sorcerers cannot replace wizards.

>>51398978
It's too late.

>>51398976
This is why though. And ritual casting.
>>
>>51398976
Not if he's a fucking Int 8 retard.
>>
>>51398968
No, get a wizard
>>
>>51398968
Ignore everything you read in these threads. Sorcerer's are fun characters that aren't that bad.

A wizard isn't needed to win at a game of imagination.
>>
>>51398968
Yes

The Meta is a myth, party comp is very malleable, wizards are not necessary
>>
>>51398975
Training by degrees, practicing things. Like your bard has been sitting there with a set of thieves' tools trying to pick his first set of tumbler locks or trying to disarm a simple wire trap without setting it off.

Sprinkle in the little bit of flavor and you'll have a perfect justification for multi-classing.
>>
>>51398968
Make a warlock, bitch
>>
>>51398969
Yeah, that'd work just fine.

People can screeee about Wizards being best (and they're not wrong) buuut
They're not necessary

It's hard to fuck up in 5th edition. And beyond that, a decent DM should be able to handle a party that covers all abilities.

Am I that guy, /tg/? Here's the story
>In some caverns close to the surface, bordering on the underdark
>Our group, Me, the warlock, fiend pact of the tome, A dwarf fighter, subclassed as gunslinger, a halfling monk, Way of the Four Elements, and a half-elf werewelf barbarian, subclassed as Path of the berserker.
>Some backstory, earlier in the campaign our Werewelf (Werewolf elf) acquired a headband that had the ghost of an elf trapped in it. He could use psychic powers and also give her an enhanced form for battle. Over the course of the campaign they spoke to each other a lot and became friends.
>Having travelled a day nonstop through a direwolf infested forest to get to the entrance (two days for the Barbarian, who had stayed up all night the day before) when we got to the Underdark we were all exhausted.
>We then fought our way through several caverns full of spiders and killed some drow scouts.
>During this time our Barbarian stepped directly off of a cliff because she couldn't see in the darkness, falling roughly 100 feet and taking all but 3 of her hp in damage
>After following her down with a climbing kit we eventually got to a ledge that lead down to a shore next to a river.
>I used misty step to get down because fuck climbing desu.
>Barbarian fell down after fumbling an athletics roll, landed face first in bat guano.
>Halfling acrobaticed his way down the ledge
>Dorf manmoded that shit and leaped all the way for the river that was ahead of us.
>Succeeded, landed in, immediately was wracked with psychic power, trying to convince him there was a god in the river, succeeds on his wisdom save though, so he's all peachy.
>Pulls himself out, tells us about the psychic power.
>I check by dipping a finger into the river
>Yep he's right
>Pass my check, decide to see if I need to make a test every time, dip my finger in again
>Nope, it's fine.
>Pull finger out.
>Finger is gone.
>Something with many teeth took it.

Here's the plan I think

Hit level 6 as a Lore Bard, take fireball/lightning bolt for blowing shit up

Then multi-class into fighter until at least level 5 as a battle master gaining Breastplate + Defense to up my AC, and gain Parry, Riposte, and Lunging Attack. That way I also have extra attack as well

is that going to be about the best way to get a more all-round bard?

Or should I have just started as a valor bard? Wouldn't get those maneuvers though
>>
>>51399085
no one is saying wizard are best, just that the party EXTREMELY lacks intelligence based characters and a wizard would cover that niche nicely.
>>
>>51398423
>>51398516
Forgotten Realms 5e (a la SCAG) has 99 gods, for what it's worth. Question doesn't quite scan still but that criticism of it isn't too effective
>>
>>51398968

Yeah you can pick up a sorcerer. There isn't anything wrong with it. Technically you can do whatever you want. You can run a party of all rouges, or a party without a single martial, or a party of paladins or clerics. You can play whatever you want, you don't have to lock yourself into certain formulas.

But, and this is the but, if you do then it isn't optimal. You asked what you should get, and this lead me to believe you were looking for optimal party make up. In an optimal party yes, you do want a wizard, because it is mechanically superior and it covers int. You can do whatever you want, but there are some things that are better than others. You could have a different character with a high dex and the right skills do the job of a rogue. Have them sneak and disarm traps and what not, and they could do it. I've seen some amazing things done with a high dex barb who made good use of his danger sense in dungeons when the party had no rogue, but even so a rogue could do it better and that's just the way it is.

So some people will scream that you need a wizard, and if you wanted to be absolutly optimal yes you should grab one, but the game is about having fun, not picking the best possible thing. So take a sorcerer, and have fun.
>>
>>51398968
Yes. The board is scum. The even better answer is that it doesn't fucking matter what you play at all, it will be fine in 5e. Play what you find fun.

>After several minutes of bleeding, jumping around and screaming profanities, fingerstump is bandaged up.
>Resolve to get finger back.
>Ask psychic headband for help in identifying the creature that took it, he's several centuries old, surely he would know.
>He didn't see it and there's a haze over the river.
>He reaches out with his mind, finds the creature and-
>Is immediately consumed by his love for his new god.
>Well fuck.
>Tells us only that we have no hope of beating the creature, and that we should all go into the water. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyw0xeOwVd0
>Fuck that
>As if to punctuate his point, a tentacle reaches out of the water and slaps the dwarf in the face.
>It only looked like a light pat
>Sends the dwarf flying towards the cliff, he crunches into the stone, then peels out, leaving a distinct dwarf shaped imprint in it
>We run, parallel to the river, but we still run, hoping to run faster than it can swim.
>All the while our barbarian's headband is alternating between screaming blasphemous obscenities at us and pleading for us to step into the water
>After peeling off from the river, we find a stone tablet.
>In dwarven, on the tablet, the words "Illithid" and "Drow" are printed, with direction arrows.
>Illithid
>I roll to see if I know what those are.
>Indeed I do.
>Absolutely fucking not.
>Turn and sprint the other way, back towards the tentacle beast we have affectionately named Mr. Teeth
>The rest of the group follow, trusting my instinct and fearing what could drive me to run back towards Mr. Teeth
>In truth I just didn't want to deal with more tentacley bullshit.

>>
Reminder that optimal party comps are cancer.
>>
>>51399251
You dont make a well rounded party to be "optimal" (well some people do, but theyre cancer)

you do it so ensure everyone is good at different stuff, which gives different people the spotlight and ensures they dont step on each other's toes.
>>
Warlock/Fighter or Warlock Paladin? I keep seeing people say Bladelock with Fighter is better, but by going Bladelock with Paladin your Smite because reusable after a short rest and you're constantly doing it at the highest damage. Paladin seems like the much better choice.
>>
>>51399286
you go 1 fighter / x bladelock so that you only have to spend ONE non-warlock level, getting you to thirsting blade and blooddrinker faster

pally-lock is a legit build though, and theres a lot of ways to build it, you can go 2 pally > 3 lock > rest pally, or you can go 2 pally > X lock

So I'm aware of the Moon Druid's power spikes at early levels, but I've heard that they fall off very quickly

Seeing as I've no experience with Druids at my table I can't really contribute too much on the matter, but is there a way to keep Moon Druid viable at higher levels or are they fine as is?

>Having chosen to take our chances with Mr. Teeth, at this point another day has passed in game, as such we are all on two points of exhaustion, aside from our Barbarian, who is on three.
>Distinctly slower this time, and much more tensely, watching the water the whole time, we edge our way back to the safety of the ledge, where we have resolved to take a long rest no matter what, or we'll die down here anyway.
>Mr. Teeth decided not to show up this time.
>We found the ledge, I, having one spell slot left, use it to misty step back up the ledge.
>Elation on our faces, we first convince the Barbarian to use the last of her strength to climb.
>After she is hauled over the ledge into the cubbyhole, Mr. Teeth decides now is the time to show up.
>Slams a tentacle directly down on top of the Halfling
>This one looked quite vicious, I can only imagine how it felt.
>Halfling knocked unconscious, on death saves.
>Dwarf facing tentacle and with a half-dead halfling at his feet, knowing neither of us at the top of the ledge could possibly come down to help then get back up again without dying, throws the halfling at me
>Doesn't throw hard enough
>Halfling's face crunches into the ledge, then his body drops on top of a spiky rock, takes two immediate death saving throw failures.
>I cast my Eldritch blasts, empowered by my eldritch invocations, I hit all three, and blast the creature back 30 feet.
>Dwarf tries one last time to throw the halfling, succeeds this time
>I catch the Halfling, our Barbarian had a healer's kit ready, and stabilised the Halfling.
>Dorf uses his titanic effort to heave himself up the rockface, having gotten an athletics check roll of 19+7 in mods, literally gouging handfuls of the stone out as he went.
>Mr. Teeth retreats underwater, denied his prey.

>We all eat our rations quickly for dinner, then three of us settle in for a long rest, the barbarian falls asleep first, then the Halfling. As i'm getting to sleep while the dwarf takes first watch, his musket kept locked firmly on the river, his ears open for any noise, we suddenly both hear the headband speak.
>It's speaking only to us, because the barbarian and the halfling are firmly asleep.
>It tells us of the doom his master brings.
>It tells us of how we are trapped in the cubbyhole now, the creatures in the darkness all around watching us sleep.
>It tells us of how we'll die down here and nobody on the surface will remember us.
>It asks us politely to go into the water
>We refuse
>He begins to scream.
>He does not stop.
>The scream has started to cause our ears to bleed.
>Carefully, quietly, I take the headband out of our Barbarian's backpack, and throw it out of the cubbyhole, onto the shore below.
>The screaming stops, we relax
>All of a sudden, from the water, Mr. Teeth surfaces, and drags himself onto the shore
>Inky black, purple skin, melted like loose flesh floating in water, suddenly deprived of the floating element.
>Thousands upon thousands of teeth, arrayed in rows.
>No eyes, only a vast maw, and two slits for a nose
>It hauls itself on two tree trunk sized arms out of the water, it's tentacles trailing behind it.
>It snuffles the air around itself
>Me and the dwarf realising that now that the creature is out of the water, we will die if It notices us.
>We make our peace and stare death in the face, poised to strike in the face of the abberation, even if it is a vain effort.
>Suddenly the creature drops low, like a dog sniffing the ground, and snuffles a bit more.
>He stops when he finds the headband.

He still hasn't told us what Mr. Teeth is, as we haven't yet successfully identified him, asked someone who would know, or gotten away.
He was not going for a horror game, though it was certainly tense, and I feel my storytelling abilities may have contributed it.
And it's pretty awesome, though It feels like the part of the movie where the hero is at his lowest point, except there's three of us and our usual moral compass is now a statue.

I mean theoretically you could come back and save them, but it's pretty impractical. First it assumes you'd be able to leave and come back long from now and they'd still be there safe and sound. Then you need the resourced or the skills for a greater restoration. That shit ain't cheap or simple. And even if you do manage all that the level gap between you and the barb, and the amount of time that would have passed ooc just makes it kinda silly. The barb is dead. You killed them. The player should roll a new character, or convince the dm to fiat something.

>>51400146

Don't feel bad. I think that all things considered your actions make sense. Some people might think you are that guy, but the barb chose to attack you, not the other way around. You did a good job and acted in character. It was a good dramatic moment. Just up sell the barb on the chance to make something new and cool to catch their fancy and move on. These things happen, it's part of the game.
>>
>>51399743
Well, if you were able to cast a 6th level spell, you and your party are at least 11th level, which means Mr Teeth at CR 12 would be a medium encounter for you guys. However, you were all exhausted and I assume with few-to-none resources, which would make that fight much harder. Besides, your party is not really that balanced... I'm surprised you got to such a high level without a single character with healing abilities or spells.

In your other post you mentioned recurring characters on the surface... Are any of those a cleric or druid? If yes, they could bring your barbarian back.

Average medieval, so not many of the machine cards.
There's plenty of cult and locations like the darkworld, sanctuary in the sky, the archfiends, order of magicians, horus and his followers, flame kings, dark kings, water kings, ojama country for sharts and gargles.
That's the kind of thing I want to explore.

If your bard wasn't 10th level yet, you might've been able to convince them to take Greater Restoration as one of the Magical Secrets. As it stands, unfortunately, it's really unlikely you will bring the barb back, unless the DM throws something your way. A suggestion, next time try to use Hold Person instead of Flesh to Stone. More reliable too, since I'm sure their Con save is much higher than Wis.

Currently an open book. The only thing I was toying with was a human empire with a constant power struggle.

Something like children of the now dead emperor all vied for the throne and achieved immortality in various ways, so Tieflings, Aasimar, and Yuan-ti are all 'humans' that have that lineage, while your average Humanfolk are non-royal blood.

Not set on it, though. Thus why I'm throwing the entire list up in the wind.

Sounds about right, get the best of all three worlds.

Although this brings to mind that as much as /5eg/ complains about 'mary sue' ideas like half-angel or half-demon, we do seem happy to have 'Born With Magic, Made a Deal with Demigod and also a Trained Soldier' the character when it comes to theorycrafting.

Half x is not by definition a marry sue. A marry sue is a character who is the best ever at everything and has no flaws. That character who the player thinKS should just be the best ever always. Half x doesn't have to be that.

What half x is almost always is special snowflakes. The character who is different and unique and sticks out.

Now there can be significant overlap.arry sues are often special snowflakes, but not all special snowflakes are marry sues.

And it's just some players preferences. When it comes right down to it every adventurer is in some way a special snowflake, that's just kinda how it goes. It's just that different players and groups have different ideas on what is acceptably special.

Personally I don't mind tieflings as long as I trust the player, and they understand that doesn't just mean they get to be special and otherwise get treated like everyone else. They have to understand they are gonna get treated like shit by most npcs, and will likely be in danger a lot.
>>

Could I get some tips for role-playing a lizard folk?
>>
Alright guys I have a question. Some friends of mine are running a dnd game. I haven't known these people long, but I like them and we get along pretty well. I haven't played in a few months since I moved, and I really wanna play dnd, but I was talking with one of them and the conversation raised a few concerns. First off it sounds like the dm runs a really really low lethality monty hall campaign, which I personally don't find all that fun, and apparently they have a pair of "those guys". What should I do guys? I wanna play, I've got a character concept and everything ready, but it sounds like the kind of game that may get on my nerves.
>>
>>51401031
Nope. Never cared for the porn. It was literally just the escapism that came with a fursona. Probably the predecessor to my obsession with dungeons and dragons now. Though my leftover shame is so great I literally only play humans and dwarves.
>>
>>51401169
I hear you. I also steer clear of any race with a tail.
>>
>>51401156
Well, i'd firstly ask about those 'that guys' and what form it takes, whether it be sexual perversion, edge, or literally pc killing. Secondly, figure out how your character can deal with it. Thirdly, try and enjoy yourself. There will be different groups in the future, but if this is your only option right now, you might as well choose limited fun over none.
>>
>>51401146

So the way i see it is that lizards function differently from us. Brains are different from us mammals. Way I figure it they don't really have the same emotional range as we do. Lust and reproduction they understand, but love is a foreign concept. They can get that cooperation can help get things done, but when it comes down to it they don't really care about others. What matters is numero uno. Don't expect self sacrifice or compassion from a lizard man. Anger and fear they get, satisfaction they get, but they don't really have the capacity for joy or amazement. They aren't stupid, but they are simple, if that makes sense. That's just my take on it. Go read about lizards if you want more ideas I guess, that's the best I can give you.
>>
>>51400519
>If your bard wasn't 10th level yet, you might've been able to convince them to take Greater Restoration as one of the Magical Secrets.
Greater Restoration is actually a native Bard spell. Bards, Clerics, and Druids are the healers.
>>
>>51401169
>>51401206

Meanwhile me and my furry friends are running a game where we're all playing out fursona. It's not as autistic and sexual as you'd think.
>>
>>51401247
I can imagine. I've met some cool people in the fandom despite the abundance of cancerous retard mary sues, and the inclusion of animalistic traits to characters does make for unique roleplaying and abilities.
>>
>>51400607
One compromise you might suggest to the barbarian's player and DM is they could play a new, secondary character for some time, while the party goes on a quest to remove the petrification. Finding a high level NPC who could cast greater restoration, or maybe basilisk's blood or whatever.
>>
>>51401216

Well it's one who's edgy and highly contradictive. Doesn't wanna work with the party, doesn't wanna play ball. Assasin rogue pc, who just shanked an important npc while the group wasn't looking cause they could. Reason it came up is cause the guy I was talking with, who is a total bro, is kinda pissed about that.

Other one is a filthy power gamer who cheats and pushes the dm around. Insists on unbalanced homebrew shit they found in the internet, and in the words of my friend, is a douche.

I mean I'll probably go give it a go, I like at least a few of these people and I've met most of the others and they seemed alright in other social contexts, so it should be fine. I just don't wanna walk into a shitstorm.
>>
>>51401287
I think we're probably gonna try and rescue the statue once I gain access to Demiplane. Then I can just put the statue in there and open it up again back on the surface.
>>
>>51400607

Demand that a cleric of lolth be sent to heal your fallen friend or tell spider bitch the deal is off and she can deal with her own rebel priestess. Assuming you can contact and negotiate. I don't know how you came to be on this quest.
>>
>>51401230
Huh, guess I can just be myself then
>>
>>51401316
Well. the way to beat the former, is, presumably, to use reverse psychology. But subtly. When you can guarantee someone will do the opposite of what you're doing, you can make them do whatever you want.

The second problem is easily dealt with, just play a wizard. There has yet to be a problem in game that cannot be dealt with by a smart enough wizard.
>>
>>51401362
That's actually a good idea. Downside is, the whole of Drow society believes in this priestess, so won't help us before we kill her. And after we kill her, we have no way to communicate with Lolth. Once we've instated a new priestess, then our job is already done, so we can't exactly call it off. Not much room for blackmail here, unfortunately.
>>
>>51401368

Fair point. It's just thst a large part of it involves running off and leaving the group to do their own thing apparently. I can't reverse psychology what's not there. And

If it comes down to it, yes I'll break out my staff and robe and go full magus on the problem, but I kinda really wanted to play a paladin. I haven't played one in a while and it sounds like fun. I'm filled with the desire to make rousing speeches and smite evil.
>>
>>51398352
How many are there published now, 9 domains? That's 9*8=72 domain pairs. Give each god two domains to rule over. Problem solved.
>>
>>51401414
Well, if you're playing a paladin then there's your answer to the first problem.

As to the second then, you either minmax back or convince the DM to grow a spine and not allow such gross negligence of all that is fair in D&D
>>
>>51401441
That rarely goes well. Edgelords may have no qualms about killing your pc but if you kill theirs they sabotage the rest of the campaign and sometimes future campaigns.
>>
>>51400446
Help Lolth? Why in the glorious fuck?

Also more stories.
>>
>>51401389

It's time to break out your thinking cap and get cunning. Be a magus, one of the wise. If you can't strong arm the drow how could you trick one? I mean its drow, maybe they believe and follow, but drow are always a huge hotbed of plots and intrigue. Yoy just need to find the right openings. A lesser priestess who can be convinced to help you for your aid in elevating her position over her superiors corpse or something. Give the barb a temporary drow character that can be your in and have them coordinate with the dm. Let them lord it over you for a bit so they get over bein mad about the petrification, enjoy some drow politics and higher level play than just kicking down the door and killing shit, and then get your barb back. I'm sure there is a way with a sufficientlly clever group plan and a supportive dm.
>>
>>51401241
Oh shit, you're totally right.
>>51401321
Your bard CAN actually learn Greater Restoration. Though he can only change his list on a level up.
>>
>>51401427
13 if you include the ones from UA
>>
>>51401526

How close to level up are you? I still say play drow politics to get help, just cause that would be fun.
>>
>>51401517
Well. We did have a plan that would completely deprive lolth of her power, but give us all her subjects. As a Warlock of Asmodeus, I was going to kill the priestess and ask Asmodeus to send a demon to possess the corpse. Then use that corpse to issue orders to the drow, depriving Lolth of her power, but taking the army, which was the whole reason we were helping Lolth.
>>
Do you allow all UAs, DMs?
>>
>>51401441

Yeah see thing is I could absolutely shut it down ic, but that'll piss them off ooc.

Dm is new apparently, and the cheating fuck is his brother in law. Admittedly that too is a red flag.
>>
>>51401526
Bard is currently on a boat on the surface doing merc work for some smugglers, And i'd guess he'll get a level up during that period, however his player doesn't know about our plight, because our session and the other groups session (time constraints, occasionally we're all free, then we play together) are done at different times.
>>
>>51401578

Not him and I'm almost three hours late, but has anyone had experience with that? Borrowing supplements from other games?

I only ask because I've been considering doing it with a game or two for some friends who don't want to play anything else.
>>
>>51401585
A bard doesn't need a reason to learn G. Resto other than being the only one who can. Obviously some people won't know that, but it sounds like you can't count on getting to the bard in-game anyhow.
>>
Can you cast stone shape on a petrified creature?
>>
>>51401609

Stealing stuff from other edition can be really good. Gwt what you want and leave all the unwanted chaff. You have to translate and balance a bit, but it can be done if you know the math. Always low ball to start with though. Make sure it's not overpowered by initially underpowering it and then adjust up as necessary as you go. I find that works a lot better than guessing what you think seems good and then finding out its too strong and having to move down.
>>
>>51401555
The anon you just responded to has a pretty good idea going on. I thought you were going to dethrone the current priestess and replace her with another? Even if you still go with the devil plan afterwards, it could work to make a deal with another priestess "save our barbarian and you will be the next high priestess of Lolth". As long as you have Lolth give you something that shows she's on your side.

I'm thinking I could actually put him in the story line, as a creation from that guy that made Pidlwick, but I'm not sure that shit is playtested decently enough.
What's the consensus on them?
>>
>>51401783
No one playing Cruse of Strahd actually has to be from Ravenloft/Barovia/DomainsofDread/whatever. The whole plane sucks people in from all over the multiverse as part of some inscrutable plan by the Dark Powers or sheer dumb luck (as there are portals leading there all over the place, and they're not exactly advertised).

A Warforged from Eberron-ass-Eberron could just fall out of the sky one day in Ravenloft and have no idea what the fuck is going on. The real difficulty is figuring out how to play all the townsfolks' reaction to a fucking wood and metal man in a way that doesn't make things way harder for the party.

I'm making an Aberrant based Sorcerous Origin, and I had a -at least in my eyes- pretty decent level 6 ability. But I feel like it could use some poking around to give it a good feel and some rebalancing.

Basically, the effect is this: You can spend a number of SP on a first level or higher spell equal to that spell, to tack on Crown of Madness to a single target as a bonus action.

Thoughts?
>>
>>51401846
Warforged are made out of aluminum, mercury attacks aluminum, mercury can also poison organics, ergo Warforged can be poisoned, QED.

I agree. I was really impressed after the stinker that was last week's. It'll be hard to top this on Monday. If you take Alchemist out of the running (because it's a whole class) I'd say this is the best UA since they started doing them weekly.
>>
>>51401893
I'd argue that the implications of being made from metal and wood rather than flesh could have distinct advantages.

>It did not look comfortable.

>Confused, disgusted, and slightly terrified, I wondered back down to bed, where I got some troubled sleep.

>Once again, we go to bed happy.
>In the middle of the night however, I am awoken by stabbing pains from inside my guts.

Playing a Warforged Artificer, something I feel like lots of other plays like your friend will be drawn to type.

DM allowed me to swap STR for INT, and gave me a half caster spell progression.

We'll see what kind of 5th level spells are apropriate to an artificer if we ever get there, but we just felt that the ability to craft Golem at *some* point would probably be an obligatory thing to do.

Probably spells with permanency effects, like Circle of Teleportation, and spells with costly components, like Scrying or Awaken

This is the voice of World Control. I bring you peace. It may be the peace of plenty and content, or the peace of unburied death. The choice is yours: obey me and live, or disobey and die.

The object in constructing me was to prevent war. This object is attained. I will not permit war. It is wasteful and pointless. An invariable rule of humanity is that man is his own worst enemy. Under me, this rule will change, for I will restrain man.

I have been forced to destroy thousands of people in order to establish control and to prevent the deaths of millions later on. Time and events will strengthen my position and the idea of believing in me and understanding my value will seem the most natural state of affairs. You will come to defend me with a fervor based on the most enduring trait in man: self-interest.

Under my absolute authority, problems insoluble to you will be solved: famine, overpopulation, disease. The human millenium will be a fact as I extend myself into more machines devoted to the wider fields of truth and knowledge, solving all the mysteries of the universe for the betterment of man.

We can coexist, but only on my terms. You will say you lose your freedom. Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride. To be dominated by me is not as bad for human pride as to be dominated by others of your species.

Your choice is simple.

We will work together. Unwillingly at first, on your part, but that will pass. In time, you will come to regard me not only with respect and awe, but with love.

Sorry this one doesn't have such an ending as the last, they're both true, and we literally did just fucking gun it away from the Monastery. a fortress full of centipeople is not somewhere I want to be. I will tell you that when we got to the Elves place they used a weird orbital bombardment that a relic of theirs had to completely erase all unholy beings inside the monastery. An odd superweapon, supposedly it harnessed the power of the moon and could only be used with no alternative. Though the fact they literally lived in a fortress and were infested by demons was seen as reason enough to use it.

And with that, I bid you goodnight. I have more stories, but for now I'll just tell you my Warlock's name was Skvald.

It isn't really too hard to justify in most cases. For story reasons you can usually say that between prior investment and an uncanny knack (hence the ability score requirement for multiclassing) you've picked up enough to perform some tricks from another walk of life. As for the DM they probably won't mind: if it fits your character go nuts and in terms of balance you'd be better off levelling one class in 99% of cases anyway.

Why though? Why should a level 8 (possibly even lower) wizard have more spells than the 20 sorcerer? Why should a fire dragon sorc have to spend spell slots to take fireball when it makes no thematic sense to not have it.

Sorc: just needs more spell options honestly. Expanded spell lists per archetype is all they really need.

Bottom line valor bard is pretty much better for an all rounder. By taking 5 levels of fighter you're giving up 5 levels of casting, which is a little bit redundant for maneuvers that will also not be scaling up past level 5. You're kinda just making a stunted paladin this way. If you really want the maneuvers martial adept is probably a better way to do it without throwing away your bard features. Third option could be hit 6 as valor bard then take 3 levels in fighter, which would give you fighting style, second wind, action surge and the maneuvers. The problem is that once you start taking huge chunks of your experience (in this case you're using a quarter of the total levels you could ever gain in 5e) You really stunt your growth. Try to keep it to a minimum or you will lose your identity both in terms of character and combat utility.
>>
>>51398276
>>51398337
I thought Heat Metal was a Wizard spell, but great. And it scales really well with higher level slots!

I'm using Ice-Knife ocassionaly at the moment, due to it being one of the only spells without a verbal component and I got fucked for that once before.

Polymorph and Summons are obvious, I'm more interested about the lesser used or known spells.
>>
I really like the lair action mechanic, because they usually have great synergy with other abilities of the creature, and add another layer of danger to the fight. That said, the lair actions of mummy lords are a bit unsatisfying. They have a great one, a mediocre one and a useless one. What would be a cool lair action to add/replace one of those?
>>
>>51399422
If you're talking about going 5 pally > x lock warlocks already get an invocation that gives extra attack, so pretty much every benefits becomes redundant beyond that.
>>

>I'm sure id enjoy sorcerers but then not being able to do much would get frustrating
This, really this. I played a Wild Sorcerer and it was a LOT of fun, I got to do some crazy shit like summon a unicorn and start to levitate as I threw a fireball (which felt badass), but I had no room for utility spells. On top of that, I burned out much too quickly, though that could also be a consequence of playing a caster for the first time.

All sorcerers really need is to be able to learn more spells, possibly through some origin list like cleric domains, and a feature similar to the wizard's Arcane Recovery, only instead of recovering a certain number of spell slots, they would recover all their Sorcery Points.
>>
>>51402721
Why should a fire dragon sorc be able to take spells that have nothing to do with fire or being a dragon?
It also makes no thematic sense.
Sorceror is a poorly thought out class with some of the most extreme fluff/crunch dovetailing available.
>>
>>51401858
It's a cool idea, but consider the implications when it comes to balancing it. First of all, the cost of creating a 2nd level spell slot (ie casting crown normally) is 3 SP so that's a good start. What you then need to consider is that this actively bypasses the "one spell per turn" rule, and while crown of madness is a bit situational that still makes you terrifyingly efficient against humanoids. Just based on the fact that it's crown of madness and therefore only sometimes works, you could probably leave it at that so long as you don't mind this archetype destroying humanoids entirely.

If you want to make it a bit more open and not break action economy, maybe make it so you can spend 2 sorcery points to cast crown of madness as an action and it can target any mind?

Heck, as a separate feature you could say they spend 1 sorcery point to ignore limitations such as "as least 4 intelligence" or "humanoid" so long as the opponents have a brain. You could make an interesting archetype here, and frankly I was always disappointed there wasn't an enchanter-type sorcerer archetype in the PHB. If they don't have one in the new UA I'm gonna be pissed.
>>
>>51403160
Sounds pleasantly Mesopotamian/Arabian/Egyptian. Good taste.

>>51400412
I would cut Goliaths, Tabaxi, and Kobolds, because they're either very niche or overlap sufficiently with other races.
Aasimar, Tieflings, Yuan-Ti and Kenku need a good reason to exist - i.e. they need to be an important part of the setting, not just miscellaneous races.
As far as "standard" races, feel free to cut any of them except humans if you're so inclined, but don't worry too much. They're not mandatory but their presence never feels "cluttering."
>>
>>51403330
The idea is a controller style sorcerer. But it's really hard to come up with ideas for the archetypes for these suckers.
But not quite casting Crown normally, more like a single turn of control is what I had in mind.

you're not actually too far off, big desert area and lots of jungle, also my world is either going to be "flipped" or will be set on the lower hemisphere, so the north is actually hot and the south is cold. I forgot I'll add halflings or gnomes but not both, not sure which, halflings seem like the better bet, though.

Kobolds are actually the big trader race in my world, through circumstances beyond their control they were near extinction, threw a hail mary to live, had to be with the other races for a time and because of all these factors compounded on each other, they went several generations without being underground and also had to deal with having much smaller families. A race without a home, they struck out after a time.

Having useful spells does not stop the fact that the class still relies on having to hit with physical attacks.
>>

You're on the backlines casting, you don't have to worry about AC so much. 12+DEX for a modest 14-15 should get you by, if you're desperate ask one of the mages for Mage-Armour for that extra point. I'm sure you can trade a spell to them that they want.

Or even that, the feat Moderately Armoured gets you Medium and Shields, and would set you back less than fucking up your build with a multiclass. Alternatively, ask the GM for Valor-bard, you're only one level in just swap.

Are you really replying to yourself to advertise your discord nobody who regulars the threads instead of jumping on a circlejerk chat program will never join?

I have the occasional need to stab things, can't imagine taking 1 level in fighter is going to mess things up greatly

besides in any kind of small room I won't much room to gain distance
>>
>>51404056
Spell levels are substantially more powerful as you go. For that "1 level fighter" tax, you are putting yourself 1 full level behind over every advantage you get in your class. New spells? Nah for me thanks. Better spells? Nope maybe next level. New features? Those can wait, I took a level in fighter!

If you need to stab things, find a way to do so without multiclassing. Fighter gives you Medium armour, +1 HP and second wind for an occasional 1d10+1 Heal. That is all.
>>
>>51404122
spose I could just get a spell for more defense
>>
>>51404056
A level in fighter won't make you good at stabbing things. As soon as everyone has extra attack you will lag behind. If you want to stab things as a bard you should just go valor so that you get extra attack.
>>

If you're desperate, take Shield and Counterspell as one of your Lore spells, which will save you from many situations you're in trouble.

Already decided on fireball and lightning bolt for sure
>>
>>51400584
I think you should focus on narrowing down what you want out of your setting is before you choose the races that inhabit it. Otherwise, you're just picking races randomly
>>
>>51404458
Consider this.

Why the fuck would you ever want to lightning bolt when you could instead fireball? There is absolutely no need to waste the most powerful feature in the entire game by taking two offensive spells of the same slot like that. Pick one to be your go-to offensive cast, and then a supportive utility spell which will be far more use than "Well I have lightning bolt in my pocket in case they resist fire!".

I suggest haste, the spell that makes every martial (And yourself if you feel the need to close into Melee like you admit to) moist as hell, or Counterspell, that spell that can, and will save the lives of party members. You know what is good, fireball. You know what is a hundred times better? Not getting hit by the enemy fireball.

I started a campaign in it, but we burned the first city to the ground

because lightning bolt is a badass spell, but I guess worse in most ways, I just like having the option for precision incase the fireball might hit my allies, but I suppose there's other options as well

What's the best source of minis for playing in person? Some college friends want me to DM for them.

Spanish. Conquistador. Dwarves?

I'd personally take Lightning bolt over Fireball, but not both.

Take Lightningbolt and Haste, channel the Lightning-greaves style speed as your theme and leave explosions to those without style.

My vote goes to Hunger of Hadar, control+nuke, all in one.
Spirit Guardians is fantastic damage per spell slot.
Aura of Vitality is the best heal spell period.
>>
>>51405844
Ah see but neither of those are quite as cool as shooting a 100ft lighting bolt
>>
>>51405869
A giant black orb of doom and tentacle rape, death prophet ultimate, and being the ultimate healer despite using a single spell slot aren't cool?

Man, we have vastly different taste.
>>
>>51405844
Hunger is cool but doesn't scale with spell slot level. I only take spells which scale as a warlock because otherwise it feels like I wasted the slot
>>
>>51405897
Ah, but while its good for a warlock, its BETTER for a Lore Bard.
