Alright, so continuing from last thread: I got $50 to spend and am in need of an airbrush to learn with. I was recommended pic related, and it was also suggested I get a 'cleaning station, cleaner, and some brushes' (>>51210616 >>51210657). Now, the brushes I understand, but why the cleaning station/cleaner? Would a small cardboard box + solvent not be an adequate replacement? Also, are airbrush brushes standardized or does each manufacturer/model have their own?

Cultist Champion of Slaanesh.jpg
201KB, 864x1536px
Reposting because I'm proud of it.

Cultist Champion of Slaanesh with Shotgun.

Legs are Daemonette legs spliced with a Kabalite Torso, gun is a Wrack Hexrifle, lash is also from the Wrack box, and the head is a Daemonette head.

My warband raided a Craftworld and plundered it while it was fighting off a Necron war fleet, and stole tens of thousands of Eldar civilians and warriors and brought them back to their Space Hulk to sacrifice them to Slaanesh. However, as the Chaos Lord of the warband believes that the greatest gift one can give Slaanesh is the love of her children, they have begun a strict regimen of torture, Warp exposure, and psychic manipulation in an attempt to convert the captives into willing servants of Slaanesh. Most Eldar cannot handle it, and their bodies are used in sacrifices and distilled into toxins and hallucinogens, but one in every thousand is twisted into accepting the love of Slaanes. These bands, though extremely few in number, operate alongside the regular Marine forces and are herded at the enemy through psychic manipulation by the warbands Sorcerer. They are used as horrifying terror weapons against other Eldar, and their creation has sparked a massive search for their base of operations by many Eldar forces, be they Craftworld, Kabal, or Corsair.

I would actually buy a brandless Chinese brush from eBay for $10-$20. Don't waste a whole $50 on a low end Badger or Iwata. When you're comfortable, spend more and buy a $100-$150 midrange brush like a Badger Krome or Iwata Eclipse, which will be your endgame brush as you don't need a $300 airbrush.

The difference between a shit airbrush and a good one is the smoothness and sensitivity of the trigger (like the gas pedal on a sports car vs. an economy sedan) as well as the general fit and finish of the parts: how tightly the screws fit and leave zero gaps, how well polished and durable the chrome finish is, etc.

For beginners' purposes and simple priming/basecoating, you can use a $20 brush instead of a $50 one.
>>
Thanks for making one. Was waiting for it but had neither the links nor an image on my phone.
Anyway:
I mentioned it at the end of last thread: what are some options to make Celestine transportable? Using a pole like on fliers instead of the seal parchment for a stand would be a decent first step. What about her doves and wings? Any way to realistically magnetize them without it being visible?
>>
>>51214057

Looks good, though. I wish I had an army that could make use of this.
>>
>>51214576

Airbrush cleaning pots just act as convenient holders and liquid catchers. If you don't care, you can just plop your brush on the tabletop when you're not holding it, and you can just spray the excess shit on a towel or box. You don't NEED a pot but it's a nice thing to have.

Airbrush needles should be standard.
>>
>>51214182
totally baffled why the pointing guy is doing drag revue while everyone else is full on tacticool mode, but this scheme looks really nice overall. One distracting moldline on the bare forearm of the "action sniper" but I really like the camo

This tack holds together better than I thought. And to think my impression was initially marred by metal figures constantly falling apart with these things. Now I can prime every single piece with an easy mind.
>>
>>51214671
I don't actually see a trigger on that picture, by the way, just a button which I assume works the same? I'll note that and try to figure out what the cheapest but best is based on reviews, then, I suppose. I just listed $50 because that's currently the maximum I /have/ to spend, not the amount I /want/ to spend.

>>51214698
>holders and liquid catchers
Got it. Will print my own, probably.
>needles are standard
Splendid.

http://a.co/iIpyJgm looks to be the cheapest one, and looks /exactly/ the same as the next 3-4 ones in the list. However, http://a.co/6O596F0 is the same thing but with 6 "free" feet of hose. So, unless someone has a good reason not to, one of those seems like a safe bet.
>>
>>51214705
Holy shit, that moldline completely passed me by. Thanks. And I dunno in regards to the Vet Kazak's posture. It's one of Corvus Belli's older models, but I've always liked the bastard.

The army's generally painted up green, but given the nature of the battles as well as the Kazak's control of the planet's only spaceport, I thought I'd run with the urban camo look. Sort of Helghast fucked STALKER.
>>
>>51214182

>>
Hey anons, it's too going to be humid all month, so is GW's paint-on Imperial Primer any good?
>>
>>51214963

It's even shittier than most paint on primers. The "best" paint on primers seem to be thinned artist's Gesso, or Vallejo's surface primer. I don't really like Vallejo's surface primer because it takes forever to cure being polyurethane, and it's also not that durable anyway, I wouldn't recommend it for anything but airbrush priming on heavily sealed models or models that won't be touched. Gesso is also going to be either super thick out of the pot or have iffy coverage when thinned.

You're kind of fucked.

Is not all bad. If work hard, don't get fed to Space Werewolf. Lighting on this one's a bit rough, and I don't know if I did it accidentally or what, but someone pointed out after the fact that the un-transformed one looks like Captain Pronin.

>>51215590
Yeah, the skin looks a little too yellow on your guys. If the lighting isn't behind that, then a glaze is a very easy way of changing that. Solid work otherwise.
>>
>>51215668
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's just lighting. Also, with that guy I kinda wanna do something to the mane, but I'm not really sure what. Maybe a drybrush on the edges of each layer in a different color, or something. Or maybe just a bit of shading on the veins? I kinda find myself at a lost for what to add, or if I should just leave it be for now.

>>51216285
Ultramar Auxilia doesn't sound like a bad idea
>>
>>51216332
what does a mold slip look like exactly?
>>
>>51216285

Ultramar Planetary Defense Force is one of the most prestigious and famed PDFs in the galaxy. Some even compare them to the vaunted Guard regiments of Cadia. Truly, these mighty men and women of Cadia are blessed by both Lord Marneus Calgar of the Ultramarines and their spiritual liege, the Primarch Roboute Guilliman.
>>
>>51216360

It's like a really bad mold line you can get on non-plastic models due to the way they are cast. Except instead of just being a mold line, it's like half the model moved one way and the other half moved the other, creating a tectonic plate like a mountain shelf created by earthquakes. Practically impossible to fix if they are more than half a millimeter high as the entire fucking model will have all its details sliced in half.
>>
>>51216373
im guessing cutting the model in half is the only solution?
>>
>>51216404

That's so terrible I actually laughed, but if you managed to do it perfectly that actually would be one of the best ways to fix it. Most people just try their best to sand down the misalignment and usually fill in and reconstruct broken details.

You can just ask for replacements if you bought actual GW/FW stuff that had a slip that's really bad. The best recasters won't be shipping out slipped models either as those are basically defective.
>>
>>51216428

>>
>>51216373
It's not a matter of material. It's just that the finecast production and qa is garbage so people associate slips with resin. You can misalign any mold.
>>
Hey WIP, how should I base colour my guys? I mean is it better to use a white base or black?
>>
>>51216974

It is a matter of material. Injection plastic steel molds are much more durable and have much higher computer assisted tolerances compared to the soft, rubber molds that are aligned by hand that metal, resin, and Finecast (which are just metal molds repurposed) use.

Cheers! I made them to use on a table i made for a friend. Can't wait to see what they look like on the table. The tiny looks different but the garage has yellowy clear panels in the roof so it makes the table look more yellow than it is. Used the same base colour, sand and washes so it should fit in nicely.
>>
>>51217220
Looks good.

Did you cover the foam in sand, or use textured paint?
>>
>>51217267
Card base for the foam, then watered down PVA sprayed all over. then brushed on paint then another PVA spray, then prayed with the main colour you see there, then another PVA spray and while wet I added the sand to the places i wanted, then let it dry 50% and then sprayed with pva again. waited to fully dry, did the wash, once dry added a few bigger rocks of sand with super glue, drybrushed it and then matt varnish spray.

I would aim to make it as similar to an official model or artwork as I can, or make something with a unique silhouette that works and isn't obviously recognizable as something that it isn't. Holy shit, how am I supposed to transport Celestine and Cawl without literally everything breaking?

Only ways I see for Cawl is either laying him down sideways inside the Citadel transport case or to somehow add a magnet at his hip to detach the upper body.

Only thing that'll probably work for Celestine is fortifying the fuck out of the frail parts somehow and magnetizing the wings to pop them on or off.

Black for darker colours, deeper shades and shinier metallics.
White for bright, strong colours
Grey for more neutral colours, or a mix of bright and dark colours.

Zenithal Black & White : For pre-shading the model, and things like OSL.
>>
>>51219975
Spraying isn't perfect, so go over it with a brush where you feel it's needed.

>>51219985
Basecoating in what sense? If you mean the first coat on the plastic, spray with a primer (or suitably solvent-based spray paint) that's near your intended base color, so black for darker ones and white for brighter ones if you have no other options
And use white sparingly, it can give bad results
>>
>>51220014
OK then. Knight skeleton is surprisingly easy to paint, all the details are fairly large and easy to get to. Much better than the Rangers I was grinding through until last weekend.
>>
Should I follow Duncan's advice and paint Greyfax' and Celestine's faces last or should I paint them first?
>>
Hey, looking for color advice here. I'm pretty much working with Citadel paint on my minis, so that's my frame of reference with this stuff. I have an old 6th ed Dark Vengeance box because I wanted those gorgeous chosen minis/Kranon, but I wanted to paint them with a more Nurgle color scheme. Because of that, I looking for something with a sickly green look to it. I know that I want to do the layering with Nurgling Green, and I'll probably hit the edge highlights with Nurgle's Rot or Ushabti Bone, but I can't for the life of my pin down a good green base paint. Could Castellan work or is that too dark to really hit with the lighter layer paint? Can I just go over a base black primer coat with a layer paint without needing enough layers to smash all the detail?
>>
>>51220176

A good rule of thumb, that Dunc advocates is paint the largest surface spaces first.

If you paint the face first then slop the black on for their hair and get it all over the face...

Man, I think something's REALLY wrong with mine. Does yours crumble when you bend it? I can vaguely carve mine but it disintegrates when I try to do near anything with it if I haven't been thoroughly kneading it for ~10min. It's just regular Sculpey, though, not SS.

i know people say you get better at painting the more you do it l, but do you get faster or slower?
>>
>>51221154
Increase the contrast. You REALLY want the shades to stick out. Layer on brighter layers of the palest shade till you get a really pale green for the highlights, or use a yellow green color. Use that color for HIGHLIGHTS!
>>
>>51221154
More blending! You do a transition from bright to dark on the bigger flames already, but there's no reason not to do it on the small ones. Contrasts look good.

>>51221164
For me it goes in phases, sometimes my finished product quality will plateau as I work on getting faster, other times I'll start getting better but slow down as I adapt to new techniques

Skitarii Vanguard heads? Or possibly the Hostile Environment ones from FW, but those are damn expensive and come with a torso that you apparently have sorted already.
>>
>>51222011
Well I'm in the process of putting it all together, yeah, mostly just sourcing parts at the moment rather than assembling anything. Hostile environment is bueno but pricy. Vanguard bits was my other option, but I love Vanguard thematically as a unit and was thinking of putting together a skitarii army at some point and I wouldn't want it all to look samey.

Just having a nose around to see if there's anything obvious I've missing in GW's range.

>I've missing in GW's range.
There a reason you want to limit yourself to that?
There is a whole bunch of companies that do 3rd party bits.
I mean you can get really weird like in pic related.
Puppetswar also do sci-fi'd up roman or greek helmets though.
Or you could just get regular roman helmets from warlord.
Or some bascinets or sallet helmets from another historical miniature maker.
Or if plop some old school retro sci-fi helmets from crooked dice on there.
If you look into bombshell miniature you can even get fishbowl helmets with clear plastic domes.

Was asking in the first place because I had Reikland already but didn't want to buy the whole array of typical skin paints for having to paint like 2 heads in 100 models.
>>
>>51223006
It's a page from the 4e codex.
So strictly speaking no.
Kriegers are an almagation of WWI french and germans though. So look up their historical counterparts for inspiration maybe?
The old Dark Eldar schemes were pretty terrible imo, but with the new range and the codex update there are a few new ones that are pretty decent. Check the how to paint deldar in the op for fluff an schemes on those cabals.

Just sounded hilariously overbearing in my head.

>for having to paint like 2 heads in 100 models.
in that case mix the paint.
Start with a brown and go from there.
Add a little white to it and then see where that takes you, add red or yellow depending on what the brown needs.
There are a lot of different browns with more yellow, red or even green in them so i can't be more specific. you'll know when it looks right.

Not really. Aside from swapping in like, a daemonette head you're pretty tied down in what you can do.

You could cut away one side of the breastplate and expose a boob under the armour, or modify one of the bell bottom boots into a thinner heeled boot.. but those are labour intensive conversions for 15~ point dudes.

chaos has female marines. one of the books has a slave girl go full khorne 'zerker mode. im just gonna be lazy and quote a wiki.

"During the Hydra Cordatus campaign, Koreger took a female Imperial Guard Captain, Larana Utorian, as his personal slave. While attending to her new master's armour, the prisoner realized that his armor held the essence of a Daemon. Communing with it, Larana learned that the creature had grown tired of Kroeger's petty slaughtering and tempted the slave to don the Daemonic armor.[1c] Upon entering his personal chambers, Kroeger was slain by his slave, now completely possessed by the creature that dwelt within his armor.[1d]"

Okay.
That excerpt said pretty clearly she is an imperial guard captain.
And while possessed by the demon 'that dwelt' (past sense) within his armor means she was possessed, it does not mean she was wearing the armor.

In any case wearing power armor is not what makes you a marine. Cause if that were the case Sisters of Battle would be female marines. Or every Inquisitor wearing a suit of PA.

The point is, there is no shortage of power armor wearing women or non-marines in the imperium, but they are not marines.

Seriously you guys spent time in your ridiculous discussion clubs because apparently oratory technique is not something used in everyday life and then end up with a bunch of idiots arguing about the technicalities of argumentation instead of the point you were supposed to argue in the first place.
Which means you suck at arguing, i.e. convincing your opponent of your point of view. Instead you point a finger and pretend like he is the one failing to deliver an argument.

I don't even know what you were arguing about, this kind of talking just clonks my bongles cause it misses the point of talking to each other at all entirely.
If you just want to be right, for the sake of it don't talk to anyone and be content in the knowledge that you can silently agree with yourself.

Second source is ebay. You've got to pay (compared to getting it for free from a buddy), but I seldom have trouble finding what I need on there.

You could try asking around at your game store, and perhaps trading bits with people there.

I think i'm going to start doing the bandersnatch itself now, I've got a couple of idea for colours but i'm not sure what to go with;
normal(ish) looking spider colours or something really garish and bright.
Either way they'll be blended up from black where it's joined to the rock.

Having the worst time picking out a color scheme for my Eldars' bases.

They're primary bone and secondary light blue. The bases are part sand and part "ruins," and I need a distinct color for each. I want to avoid orange, grey, brown and similar colors, because I already have bases in those colors.

>>
>>51231162
Yea but i eventually came to the conclusion that it would look dumb next to 40k vehicles since it's so long and short.
And doesn't have rivets all over it.
>>
>>51230842
the point of bases is to provide a neutral background.
So grey and brown basically means you just threw 90% of the variations that will not look like a clown threw up on your miniatures out of the window.

Anyway, I guess you could try a green marble or something like that for the stone part.
Painting sand sand colored, when you got bone on your miniature is gonna distract from the paintjob on the figure though.
And I can't think of any other sensible choice for sand that isn't sand that wouldn't then be some variation of brown or grey.

My advice would be to throw those artificial limitations out of the window and go with something that looks good.

The only other way to circumvent that, that I can think off would be to do some kind of mars themed (not gw mars) red earth look or cover all the dirt with snow.
But then you got a bone white mini on a snow white bases.

And if you use red/terracotta on the base you gotta be careful that the strongest color in your scheme doesn't end up being the dirt on the bases.

Imo a dark grey urban rubble theme would look good with the blue/bone scheme cause it's neutral but provides a good contrast.
>>
>>51229279
Mistakes are how we learn.

Always bother, anon.
>>
>>51231246
Fair point. The proportions and designs of most guard vehicles trigger me though.

>>51230393

>>
>>51231399
You can also cut up a very thin plastic cylinder for rivets.

Kind of wish they would make a streamlined slimmed down version of the chimera similar to the death korp leman russ.
