you should really get the gemstone paint. Those blood drops would look much better
>>
>>51193372
I did the same. I got some tau and like 4 paints, painted them, realized I sucked and threw away like $70 worth of shit. This was all when I was way younger.

Now I've re-got into the hobby and spent even more getting everything but now my models look presentable and Im having fun. I feel bad for those thick painted horendous models probably crushed in a garbage heap and burned in an incinerator.

I was about 14 when I got into 40k, BT at that.

Got back into it at around 20. I still weep when I think about the 200-300 euros worth of marines thrown away, brand new, still on sprues.

I hadn't even painted a single one of them.
>>
>>51193990
why'd you throw them away?

Why, after years hiatus from the hobby, I thought starting back up by painting Scavvies was a good idea... I have no idea.

Still plugging away at this gang. Not pic-worthy yet.

I know the feeling. The hobby is almost a trap if you're young. I feel as if you need to be at least 18+ to actually understand what the fuck you're doing in a way. Of course there are exceptions, but the younger the kids the less they realize what they're getting into.

I want to mount the ghostkeel body on the onager legs kind of like pic related but if the scale is off it'd look absoloutely bizzare.
>>
>>51194978
paint the surface you want to do in gemstone either white or some other very light color. Coat it with a drop of gemstone paint and it will turn out really nice.

The red gemstone paint is alot harder to get a nice look out of than blue or green though, those two tend to turn out great every time
>>
>>51193474
Blood drops on pauldrons should be painted

Crux Terminatus should be painted

While I like how dirty and battleworn they are, you got this effect from not taking your time. Alot of small stuff like the green paint you used for lights bleeding onto the light casings.

Overall, you did not do bad, they are good mini's, you just need to put a little more work into them and keep practicing.

This is the most complicated model I've taken on as a commission. Will also be the first time I leave so many parts separate for painting.

It's Kabuki's Celestial Knight. I would not recommend buying from them. They sent me this by mistake instead of their "totally not Mortarion" model and after some shitty customer service basically left me stuck with this guy.

Thankfully I found a local guy who wanted him and also wants me to paint it for him. So here we are.

No, no. It's fine brother.
We use skulls and chains to adorn marines all the time.
Please ignore the fact that they are being worn by a mutant. He's a normal fellow, just hasn't shaved this year or cut his nails.

Also space wolves trapped in the eye have a thing for looting chaos armor to replace their broken stuff.
>>
>>51194517

For his right shoulder use a marine shoulder pad to hide the gaps. This requires you to shave off some of the wulfens shoulder for it to fit, but the result is worth it.

I've primed in 80% humidity (at ~55 degrees Fahrenheit) and it all came out fine, anon (pic related). Try it on a bit of sprue first if you're worried about the weather.

As for actual priming tips, start spraying off of the model and do a moderate speed pass over the target area until you're off the model on the other side. Don't go too fast or too slow; each pass should take anywhere from two to four seconds.
I find I get the best results if I spray around 18 inches out from the model, do two or three per coat, and do two to three coats.

Good luck anon.

Something that might be worth doing to help out any newfriends and people undecided about which paints to go for would be going through all of Duncan's main painting guides and counting which paints he uses how often. Should give a decent graph to show which ones of each shade you will need the most if you follow the official main color scheme.

if so, which its currently right now, muggy weather is really bad for spraying, but to do it indoors with the AC on and just get a spraying box and ventilate the room after
its currently 12:00pm here and its 23 degrees at the moment, so its pretty shitty spraying weather

Still, putting purple and green together is a dangerous game, so you're gonna want to spend some time tinkering to find the right saturation/tone balance.

The big purple depression dinosaur is a good starting frame of reference though. Right now the purple on your eldar is just too bright and not broken up by anything else. I'd definitely mute the purple ever so slightly and introduce some black for the under armor.

Currently buying shit to paint Celestine. Duncan suggest spray-basing her with Retributor. Don't have it as a spray, will I be fine brush-basing her with an adequately thinned down normal Retributor Gold, should I put some other paint as a primer underneath first or can I directly paint the gold onto the plastic as base/primer? Alternatively, should I just skip out on using it as a base and use something else?

get a black primer from gw and just base the whole thing retributor gold whilst in thin coats, its not as fast as spraying gold but it gets the same result. Always prime your models, paint straight on plastic is a big no no

A stiff, non-metallic brush should get rid of a lot.

For stubborn stuff and a "normal" file, run it the opposite way over a piece of brass. A file that's just a diamond-impregnated surface probably won't be directional, so there it's probably just to hit the brass and hope you don't have stubborn brass bits move in instead.

The latter. I primed all the heads, bolters, backpacks, and pauldrons seperate from the main body (which was all one piece) and then attached them after I primed and spray based the body.
It's fairly easy. I just attach each bit to a toothpick using a dot of blutack and place all the little pieces in a block of styrofoam to keep them in place. Fairly cheap, and all the materials are reusable (though my blutack is looking suspiciously more black then blue these days)

Not my image, but they are about the same size.
(source is the Gravengames Warzone review). Another solid source for info on the models in Eternal Hunt's "Totally Worth it: Warzone" essay.

A couple caveats, though:
The plastic is really, really hard. I use super glue, not polystyrene, to put them together. It's almost impossible to cut through their limbs with a knife. I used clippers to chop off a hand, and I think I'm going to have to get a jeweler's saw to remove guns and arms for large-scale conversion work.

There are only a few possible poses, so if you want lots of variety, you are going to have to fight the plastic to get it.

Those are probably the miniature's thinnest pieces. Many of sprue-to-model connections are thicker than the gun's handle. You can definitely chop that off with clippers, and I believe you could make the cut with a knife as well.

Working on some recent acquisitions from my family for my birthday. The macrocarid is a really nice model that I've wanted forever but it's a bit of a let down in size, it's much smaller than I thought it would be, I certainly wouldn't say it's worth the price they have it at. It's smaller and shorter than the triaros and considering this is supposed to be their equivalent to a landraider its all around rather underwhelming. Other than that mild complaint I'm more than happy with it and the ursarax, the only construction issues I had was fucking up some of the arm placement (got confused between right and left so had to do some chopping and re-aligning.)

That's just grit, it looks like the stuff I got in a pet store in the reptile section for a pound per kg.

I'd actually recommend picking up some finer sand (soft sand from B&Q can be had for 3 quid for more than you'll ever use) and mixing some of that grit stuff into the sand for a more in-scale look.

Glue on with PVA, paint colours of your choice and you're sorted.

As you're doing a big rebasing effort though, now's the ideal time to consider what you really want for the bases. The studio has actually gone with a beigey earth that's different to the robes, but still provides a nice contrast to the black armour.

Bits resellers only make sense because they're confident they'll sell most of the parts of a miniature, and forge world uses the processes they do because they're lower volume than main GW. Look for a recaster and buy the whole kit.

reposting from the last thread but I'm wondering what colour to paint the claws, I'm thinking either bone to match the face or just black.
The forearms are the same colour as the rest of the mini now I just don't have an up to date pic yet.
>>
>>51206979
If you brighten them like the face they'll draw your eye away from the important visual elements of the mini. I'd have kept them dark to be honest, keep the bright to his face and the people
>>
>>51206979
I'd go with dark brown, black is too extreme and unnatural and bone will detract from the face.

As they're now the same colour as the rest then glaze a dark brown over them.

using differently colored rods might be the better alternative.
You can get transparent neon acrylic rods in the appropriate diameter, you just have to cut them to length.

The reason I'm saying this because painting red over green will just turn black.
I don't think tinting the rods would work.

Maybe that's an effect you are after, but the rods also wouldn't be straight anymore. You'd have a smooth uneven surface that kinda looks slimy, I'd imagine.

If you do this post a picture, I'm curious to see what it'd look like.
Just saying I don't think you can use them for tinting.
Or tinting the rods in general would be a bit of pita because they are not clear they're green.

tinting transparent plastics is something you can do, just google around for articles on tinting clear canopies on model airships or something like that.

That turned into a bit of a rant, I'm just not sure I got what you were trying to do.

>>

>Any advice?
would be easier to give advice with a picture.

Just as a rule of thumb:
If you use the same washes on your bandages as you use on your bones it's not surprising.

If you basecoat the bones white, then paint the bandages grey or a golden brown that would differentiate them a bit.
Of you shade the bones brown, but use a black wash grey bandages for example you also got a color contrast there.
Depending on how bright your bones are you might want to paint the bandages a really dark brown or a very bleached brown/grey so you get a value contrast.

As I said depends on what your models actually look like.
>>
>>51208141
You could leave it off.
Or cut the cable off and replace it with a piece of wire.

The fiddly bits are the first things to go in a transport bag anyway, if they even survive playing.
>>
>>51207936
I play. I actually armada because its easier to jump in and play than 40k. I paint squads just because they look like crap unpainted. The core set is pretty expensive but at least it comes with everything you need to play. A good way to demo it is if you have table top sim you could play it on there for free. Theres a whole online community playing it over the web, but of course if you can find people and buy ships then tabletop is best.

This is a really good deal, trust me, but its a 100 buck investment off the bat. But with this you would have a full size army for either side.

>>
>>51208421
Yes there is only one edition of Armada.
The game is roughly between 1 and 2 hours. It is points based but the max points anyone uses is 400, 300 is normal and the core set is like 150 so the games dont last long. The reason point caps are serious is because the size of the game surface is very important.

Also dont worry about editions or anything, its not like warhammer where they change it up and youre out 150 bucks to buy new rules, if they ever did update it im sure it would be free but it doubt they would. By following the flesh folds that the face is pulling against and continuing them out over the seams and onto the contours of the flesh on the metal it will look a lot better.

Then, follow the metal flesh contours down what I'm choosing to interpret as the spine.

Fucking moldlines.
>>
>>51209760
Thin it to a very light and translucent consistency, probably best to use medium rather than water, as it might start separating with that much water.
>>
>>51209469
It's just a question of chemistry. Primers use synthetic resins to seal the surface they're spraying while paint doesn't. GW sprays, as actually indicated by their branding, are not meant for sealing and are just aerosol paint. If you want actual primer, Duplicolor sandable is good as are most auto primers.

>>
>>51209649
Thank you, good plan.
>>
>>51209918
Any quality acrylic medium will do fine, though perhaps a glaze medium will get you there with less.
Golden, Windsor & Newton, Schmincke all make good acrylic mediums in larger containers.
Vallejo and GW make them at hobby size, GWs is called Lahmian Medium, the rest is called either "glaze medium" or "acrylic medium".

Glaze mediums promote translucency a bit more than acrylic medium does, but also tend to slow drying a bit more.
>>
>>51209760
So here's the thing: washes are just thinned paints. The most effective way to achieve that is going to depend on how you use that wash. If you're making what I assume is a shade (something to pool in the recesses along with adding a darker tint) then you don't need to adjust the medium as much as the vehicle. What I mean isthe binder, which is the medium, isn't as important an adjustment as the vehicle or the water most likely.

The key to any adjustments in paint is understanding what makes paints paint. Adjusting the pigment will mess with the intensity, the medium will mess with opacity and thickness, and finally vehicle will change the flow of the paint.
>>
>>51209924
that face paint is well good mate

is this wamahordes?
>>
>>51210048
I'd say Malifaux, none of Warmahordes factions sport anything this wildly organic, not even the druids.
>>
>>51209900
Considering plastic, resin and metal are non-porous an actual primer seems redundant then. Especially considering you might be sealing a resin surface with resin.
>>
>>51210067
It is a really nice model honestly
>>
The base coat for my firewarriors is mournfang brown for the undersuits and Leadbelcher for the armor
If I got a can of spray on to make painting faster should I get the brown or silver?
>>
>>51209924
Still looks great, your highlights could go further but with an army to paint this is really nice quality.
>>
>>51210094
it is also, at a microscopic level, making the surface of the resin rougher, which allows the paint to bond to it more easily.
That's what you prime these materials for, not to seal a porous surface.
>>
>>51210122
brown, painting metallics on raised detail on top of brown will be far easier than painting recessed brown on top of metallics.
>>
>>51210067
There is Hordes, though. I know that side of the wargame uses 'Beasts' instead of 'Jacks,' so I wouldn't be surprised if their druid faction using elements in addition to giant monsters.

>>
>>51210094
Well, sealing is still pretty important when dealing with metals given that a resin coat is helluva lot stronger than just pigments, but I agree that it isn't necessary for plastics. The big reason why I'd still lay some primer down on plastic is for tone reasons.

Would be interested in whether it's actually rougher than GW's sprays, I'm aware that we're priming to give the surfaces tooth.

I'll still stick to Chaos Black until I get an airbrush though.
>>
>>51210097
agreed, it is a nice looking model, I also like the really large carnivorous plants that are on the base.
>>
>>51210147
The tougher part is definitely true as I alluded to in my response, but it doesn't allow paint to easier adhere to it. That part of primer comes from the fact that it gives the surface a slightly barbed coat which holds the paint better. Still good advice.
>>
>>51210180
Hordes druidic faction would be the only option, and they don't have any real "mobile trees" type of models, they're all either constructs or large animals.
>>
>>51210226
It is rougher, but not in a way you'd notice.

Not picking up actual primer is probably fine as you're likely just spraying plastics, but dropping Chaos Black is still a good idea given the markup. I'd recommend Duplicolor sandable as it'S just better than GW's affairs.

So I want to paint a metallic purple, similar to the Pre-Heresy Emperor's Children. Do you guys think silver with purple ink will work or should I look for more resources?
>>
>>51210522
Also, you need a cleaning Station, cleaner and some brushes

It helps that the manager is a really solid guy, I never feel bad supporting him.

I only go third party for stuff where GW's stuff is genuinely unusable (that craft knife is a joke and they don't sell replacement blades) or I get a significant benefit (Tamiya plastic cement with a brush. Would have hated trying to build Celestine with GW's shitty needle applicator.)

Pic related to keep it /wip/
>>
can you cut resin with an xacto knife like you can with plastic
>>
>>51210772
yes, depending on the resin it will even be slightly softer than plastic.
>>
>>51210871
thanks anon you're probably a really nice person in real life, have a nice day

Remember wear a dust mask when filing resin, as its dust is cancerous

So how do you go about actual assembly of Celestine?

I really don't trust leaving her only on those tiny purity seals as her stand. Nor do I trust the wings to survive even a single transport while attacked. Nor the doves. Fuck, this entire thing feels like it'll fall apart the second I place it into my carrying box.

Any way to reasonably easy magnetize the wings, maybe the doves even and to either magnetize or just support the purity seals? Was thinking of getting one of those flier support stands and somehow glue it under her OR adding wire to the purity seals OR magnetizing the wax seal on her coat to snap her off, though I'm afraid she might not stay attached anymore if the magnet is "upside down" and holding her entire weight while frontloaded.
>>
>>51211023
Well RIP me then, luckily I've only worked with a few resin parts before.
>>
>>51212002

If I had the new Celestine model I wouldn't use the purity ribbons at all and just use thick rod pinned to her base and have her flying like that. Same way people pin rods for drones and things.
>>
>>51212038
That's what I meant with that flier support thing. Just keep the seals as decoration but don't but any weight on them.

Now to figure our how the hell I can get her attached to one of those things and where to get a clean looking one.

Assuming it's okay to post my trash mini painting here. (I've improved her since I took this photo.)

Okay guys, I got a question that probably will be met with sarcasm and meme's of Duncan, but when you guys dry brush, do you still water down the paint? How can your brush truly be "dry" if you're paints are watery then? the point of dry brushing is to bring out edges, and folds etc.. but if you dry brush with watered down paint it just seeps into the cracks anyway...

Sure you can, anon. Sure you can.

'thin your paints' is relative to the task at hand, and is a general guide, not an absolute one.
you would not thin for drybrushing.
>>
>>51212316

Any kind of liquid will absolutely ruin your drybrush. Make sure your paintbrush is bone dry, and make sure your paint isn't too watery. Don't use airbrush or super thin paints for drybrushing, you want thick, dry paints so you can wipe them off on a paper towel and be left with flakes of paint on your brush. Wet and thin paint will just seep into your brush bristles and turn into regular paint instead of drybrush.

This is why GW drybrush paints are so dry and crumbly. You don't NEED to buy GW dry paints, but they aren't as big a scam as /tg/ claims.
>>
>>51212302
Thin your paints. The goal of painting a mini is to have it look like it doesn't have paint on it.
>>
>>51212302
i like how the blood on the chainblade makes it look like she was just hitting people with it without turning it on.

nah though you have a long way to go, but we beleive in you anon, keep at it and dont get discouraged by harsh criticism
>>
>>51212469
It's the clear coat that makes it look shitty.
>>
>>51212582
Yeah I noticed that afterwards.

What was it washed in to make it have the clear coat? I'd avoid that next time. >>51212302

Also what >>51212498 said. Keep at it anon, you'll get better.
>>
>>51212620
It was GW 'ardcoat to stop the paint from chipping if I so much as breathed on it, interestingly the first miniature I coated turned out fine, it's just the Canoness that was fucked.
>>
>>51212724

GW ardcoat is very thick and should be thinned liberally. You can also remove its shine with some Lahmian Medium or any kind of matte varnish.
