Pathfinder General /pfg/

Was the Healer's Handbook any good? What does it do for combat healing in 1pp-only? Is there better noncombat healing than a wand of CLW now?

How does the stuff there stack up against DSP's medic or vitalist or SoP's Life sphere? Is there better noncombat healing than Enduring Crane Strike spam?

>THIS IS IMPORTANT!
If you want build advice make sure to say what 3pp you can use, if any.

The best stuff in it was by far the Paladin stuff. The new mercies were fantastic and the variant bonds were cool. I liked the flaming halo that gave super protection against evil.

What I don't like about gestalt+DSP+SoP is that if you're not some kind of initiator+cheesed out spherecaster, you might as well go home.

Especially with such a low level start...
>>
So, what exactly is a Hell's Vengeance, pfg?
>>
>>51173980
Because "ceiling" doesn't mean you have to always optimize all the way to it. It's the same reason why people who play wizards aren't immediately banned; just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD. If you do, you're a blight on the system and part of the problem; if you're just playing Wizard to get weird spells or play with a thematic list rather than "haste/teleport/glitterdust/color spray/simulacrum/blood money", then there isn't anything wrong with it.

I don't think you're understanding, shitposter-who-posts-cute-images-to-hide-themselves. I explained very clearly that "well you can do that!" doesn't mean you SHOULD do that, or that you'll get accepted if you do. Yes, you CAN delete two CR10 enemies by cheesing out with the build that 2hu posted a couple threads ago. You CAN also pick the strongest Wizard spells and run the game as what is effectively a secondary GM. But if you do try doing that, you'll almost certainly get either not chosen, or get dropped very quickly for ruining everyone else's fun.

>>51174154
Also what this guy said, just because you don't like the chargen rules doesn't mean you have to convince other people not to join; just ignore it and don't pay attention to it, oh wow so difficult.

WARNING

Hell's Vengeance sounds like a combat-heavy campaign centered around fighting for the glory of House Thrune. It is not. Hell's Vengeance is a covert ops subterfuge campaign with a tiny bit of combat near the end. It is not an armed revolution, it's old men (and their flexibility) running the world.

Because there are people who don't want to go full autism, you dumb fuck. We have this conversation EVERY FUCKING TIME. People find the rulesets fun, and they don't have to work as hard for them to be "good". This means they put in less work for optimization, unless they want to optimize for some absurdly niche, silly thing (like fighting with a bladed scarf or something) that's flavorful.

A ZS/OD warder who is a bland beatstick using a clearly roundabout way to deal a gorrillion damage every other turn usually does not have an interesting character attached to it. It also makes that player look like a piece of steaming shit. Like you.

Anon, "usually" does not mean "never". "Interesting" can also mean any number of things, and 2hu having the longest backstory didn't make his character interesting in the slightest. Why does /pfg/ obsess so much over backstories with these character apps?

The best games I've ever played, whether with my friends or some online pick-up-group with randos, has had characters with literally one or two sentence backstories. We had some great times, intense roleplaying, and some epic ambitions from our characters. Not even in the "beer and pretzels" way, but legit in-depth roleplaying.

Meanwhile, /pfg/ is so autistic over backstories as if they're the be-all end-all.

Why? Is it because they're the only way to judge a character in the "round up 30-40 applications" stage?
>>
>>51174522

I've gotta agree with this.

It's more important to have a conversation about a character's backstory than have them work on a big complex backstory in a vacuum.

That way the GM knows this isn't just some throwaway page of stats that you're going to lose interest in and just sit there on your cellphone going "I attack whoever's attacking me, if no one's attacking me I attack whoever's attacking my closest ally. Tell me when it's my turn again."
>>
>>51174522
Because that was the only thing we had to do for a game that had a 3 month delay before applications opened up, and that game also required the PCs to have a connection to a number of NPCs and a stake in the world. So for lack of anything better to do, anons pissed away time with character essays as a fun little exercise, which has caught on. Because it's fun.

It's fun to make character backstories. For some reason that caught on for other games.
>>
>>51174562
Hunter if you want to mess with teamwork feats, Slayer or (weirdly enough) Fighter otherwise. Avoid the trap of Ranger, they're basically worse Fighters at this point. Paladins can also do well at the job, but they need to invest EVERYTHING into it since they normally are assumed to be going into melee.

Isn't a better way to accept players something like...

1. Invite everyone to Skype or Discord, interview them one by one.
2. Get to know them a little better, ask a little what they'd like to play, ask for a basic build idea and a basic backstory/motivation idea.
3. Keep talking to them, get to know them more.
4. Move on to the next applicant.

Wouldn't this let you be able to make more informed decisions on which players mesh better with you? It would also make sure players don't waste their time by hammering out long backstories and character sheets.
>>
>>51174677
For some, sure. Others don't want to do that for GMing and prefer a "first impressions/nothing personal" take on choosing a party, and that's okay too.
>>
>>51174677

That's how I do it, generally. It works very well, and almost every failed game I've ever had resulted because I was desperate for a fourth player and got lenient or accepted a friend of a successful applicant without proper vetting.
>>
So for chocolate elf, is it just an elf that happens to be dark skinned or is it Drow?

I'm playing a Two-Handed Fighter, are there any classes/archetype that'd make for a good dip with it. Was thinking about Barbarian but I don't know if the few rounds I'd get from a dip would be worth it, so then I started thinking about dipping Inquisitor for the Will saves, Studied Target (Sanctified Slayer), Shake Effects/Detect Magic (Iconoclast), Wisdom to initiative, a few spells, and either +10ft movement from the Travel Domain or +1 all saves from Protection.

Thoughts?

So, what games are people playing over the weekend?
>>
>>51174677
>>51174785
You know what I prefer? I prefer playing with people I already got to know beforehand, who all know eachother, and who can all sit down and agree on what they want to do. You know what DOESN'T happen often? That. Which is funny, since there's an entire IRC room now for people to discuss these games, and people haven't just gotten together in there to form a game instead of constantly making spectacles of the games.

In lieu of that, what's been happening has been fun. It's low-pressure and provides a fun workshop for people, even if they're not likely to get in.

I have plenty of great friends into this stuff, but they all pester me to DM because I DMed some very good games for them. And it's hard to get them playing pathfinder again when we could be playing something else - it'd be wrong for me to inflict pathfinder on a friend who doesn't want to DM it.

Also /pfg/ is the only place who seems like they'd allow hi-op initiators which I really want to try.
>>

Seems like it will live or die based on who Eagle picks as his characters. It has the probably not so strange problem of the players making more lore than the DM, since Eagle is doing very little, but some of the apps are quite cute and the game can probably ride along just on the players wanting to fuck each other.

So while I've had my own apprehensions about pathfinder without ever playing it before it seems I may find myself in a group soon enough.

it seems like it will be fairly vanilla and from what little I've gleaned from the people playing the setting will have things like muskets and flintlock pistols and there will be at least a gunslinger, maybe a cavalier, a barbarian and a helper DMPC of some sort.

That said, I think I want to try using a Witch so what are some general ideas for making an effective witch with I believe just the core book.

I once ran a game for a Sun Elf Evoker with the Admixture subschool when the APG came out.

He was able to generate light when the Plane of Shadow leaked onto the Prime.
He one-shotted an ogre with a Scorching Ray and the Critical Hit Deck
He burned the Rogue's shadow away she got better.
When he wasn't burning creation, he taught at the university in not!Athens.

Pic semi related.

I have a hardon for dragons being arrogant and prideful over most humanoids. I have even more of a hardon of dragons showing fear in the face of a "hero". Or the word hero in and of itself being more than just a moniker, but a specific title with criteria to be earned.

Arrogant monsters showing fear is the best.

>>
A question about gestalt. You pick to classes and get both feats and the better values...but then, can you multiclass, and have that new class tied to a different class?

Taking it 1pp, I'll assume this means Paizo only, is there any good reason not to go wizard cleric 3, then Mystic Theurg Swashbuckler for 10 levels?
>>
>>51175061
Witch, Gunslinger, and Cavalier are in the Advanced Player's Guide so I doubt it's core only. Mind trying to get some clarifications on that?

Even with that in mind, a witch is going to be incredibly useful in a party of four characters, especially with a Gunslinger, Barbarian, and a Cavalier in there, three classes that are really only good at dealing damage.
>>
>>51175103
If your doing anything but either killing the dragon, or torturing it to find out the location of its hoard, and you were in my party, I would likely end up killing you for consorting with a dragon.

I have Oath against Wyrmkind for a fucking reason.

Quicken Spell is +4 to spell level. You can't even use it until 8th level. Even then, you'd still get more utility out of one thing that does combat well and one thing that does out of combat well.

Not exactly. Gestalt is in general for expanding the flexibility of characters, not necessarily the power. A ZS Warder is already going to be dealing with combat very easily, so it's better to tack on something that's a skill monkey, or has the miscellaneous problem solving skills of a wizard, rather than just something that shits out more damage.

1pp is First Party Publisher, which is only Paizo. If Paizo licenses another company to make Pathfinder material that would be Second Party Publishing. If there are other companies making material for Pathfinder that's Third Party Publishing, or 3pp.

SoP is Spheres of Power, which is the third party publisher Drop Dead Studio's content, an alternate casting system.
PoW is Path of War, made by DSP, Dreamscarred Press, another third party publisher. It's a system of combat based off of 3.5's Tome of Battle.

Like, if you've got Fighter 2 Kineticist 1 // Wizard 3, you add up the statlines on each side to see what's the "better" you will use between the two.

You need to mark the levels each was what appropriately as well if there's going to be any changes to skill and hitdie values, as they only apply to the appropriate levels (if you take A level of rogue on one side and a level of bard on the other, you get 8+, and that 6+ is "lost")

So staggering and choosing carefully become even more important.
>>
>>51176519
That's stupid for two reasons. One, because 3pps are still providing a product to consumers. By your reasoning there is nothing distinguishing DSP and Paizo.
Two, because if there exist 1pps and 3pps then there exist 2pps, and there are. Yes, 3pps can publish freely, but they are not a subsidiary of the 1pp, that being Paizo. I don't know the details of any TTRPG companies, so I'm using video game companies as an example, and here's one.

Sony is a First Party Publisher. It puts out the PlayStation and games for the PlayStation.
Naughty Dog is a Second Party Publisher. It is a subsidiary of Sony, and it publishes games for the PlayStation.
Square Enix is a Third Party Publisher. It is not owned by Sony, and it publishes games for both the PlayStation and other consoles.

>>
>>51173980
I'm with you, brother.
>>
>>51176886
Parties involved in a contract still need to be defined.

At its basic form, the contract is between you and paizo. That by default makes you two the first and second parties.

The fact that you're the first two involved in the contract means that anyone referenced after is a third party.
>>
>>51176955
But they'd be separate contracts.

In terms of build paths, I guess it depends on how you want your dude to be

The remake will still be compatable with most archetypes, so there's that, further the new arsenal tricks will have anything from magical ammunition, to being a living toolbox.

The thing about the Armorist I plan on implementing is the emphasis on "versatility", being the guy with just the right tool for the job, and basically being a living toolbox of magic and murder.

Whether this means you will try to spend your arsenal feats on combat feats, sharing weapons, or utility is up to you.

Now, unless you take the trait for it, you still need to have good Wis, however most of the abilities are stat agnostic, so whether you want to focus more on casting or combat is up to you.

Really, in terms of design I guess its best to say I'm trying to reach for and emulate the Aegis in terms of class and build versitility, though at worst with both its casting and ability to use arsenal tricks to get feats wit might be around as competant as an optimized WMH/AMH Fighter.

Does that answer your question? Sadly I myself have a hard time putting it into words, since currently the armorist has no singular set "build paths", as his gimmick I'm trying to develop is "versiility through gear and magic"
>>
>>51176976
Yeah, the other company would be the second party to paizo in THEIR contract.

And then who the first party would be upon sale of that product would depend on who's writing the contract.

But within the context of the FIRST contract, the second company is a third party.
>>
>>51177039
But when I buy something from DSP I have nothing to do with Paizo. I can buy from DSP without ever having anything to do with Paizo. So why is DSP a third party to my contract between me and DSP?

In addition to that, why is DSP involved in my contract with Paizo? What say do they have in me buying from Paizo? My dealing with Paizo and my dealing with DSP are two totally separate things.

What is the situation in which Paizo, myself, and DSP are all entering a single contract?

Countrygirl's dad was a necromancer who kept on raising the cows and horses to keep plowin' the fields, and gathered up villagers' diseases to heal them (as well as use them for later, more nebulously-nefarious purposes). That's the talk of a girl that enjoys shoving a few too many lemon cakes in her maw! You're supposed to worship Erastil for a mild winter, not Urgathoa so you can get lazy in the cold!

>. Plus, everyone loves having a surplus of food for the winter.
Urgathoans would not have a surplus store of anything. Their whole belief is based around instant gratification, prurient pleasures, constantly gorging your fat face all the time, and slothfulness. Urgathoa is all about using undeath as a means to partying forever and doing nothing but feeding into your selfish desire.

Urgathoanism is completely antithetical to both Erastil, and a agrigarian lifestyle

If you want a good harvest and bumper crop, and for good food stores to last the winter, you either pray to Erastil, Abadar, Gozreh, or any of the appropriate minor gods and empyreal lords. Hell, the Green Mother and Lammashtu are even better choices for a farm culture than Urgathoa. Daikitsu is also an excellent choice if the community has a Tian influence

Plus, using a cow for necromancy is wasteful, when it can be cut up and stored for food in the larder, the bones ground to chicken meal, hooves used to make glue, and horns for drunking honrs and tools. Plus most farm animals tend to not react well at all to undead being present

"At 3rd level, a bloodmage becomes so massive that her rolls of fatty, blood-laden flesh grant her a +1 natural armor bonus. At 7th level, this bonus increases to +2 but reduces her speed by 10 feet. This penalty stacks with the penalty from the Bloodmage Initiate feat."

The feat makes you suffer from carrying a medium load's worth of fat.
