What do i equip the Lord with, and which squad should he join?
>>
I wrote a Death Guard List. Aka "Fuck Obsec".

++Purge Detachment++
-Chaos Lord w/ Mark of Nurgle on Bike, w/ Power Fist, Lightning Claw & Sigil of Corruption - 165
2x 5 Chosen w/ Mark of Nurgle & 4 Plasma Guns - 165 x 2 = 330
2x 5 Havocs w/ Mark of Nurgle & 4 Missile Launchers - 150
5 Havocs w/ Mark of Nurgle & 4 Autocannons - 130

Total: 925

Take a 2nd identical detachment and it's 1850 on the dot.

No obsec, but you only care about blowing up the enemy. Advance forth and make your foe regret the myth that Chaos is a close combat army.

So...I re-read through Siege of Vraks. You know the Purge detachment? You can only take the Mark of Nurgle, but you can take any "Daemon of" unit.

This is technically a legal Thousand Sons detachment. Add Daemon allies, Heavy Support, etc to flavor.

++Purge Detachment++
Magnus - 650
Daemon Prince of Tzeentch with Wings and Armor - 220
Helbrute - 100
Helbrute - 100

Thanks to Forgeworld rule oversights, you can run Magnus in a Thousand Sons detachment that doesn't include a single model with the Mark of Tzeentch. Sadly, this is probably a more effective way to run him.

Potential new player here. I have been thinking of getting into 40k, but it sounds like there may be a strong possibility of a significant rules rework coming up later in the year. Should I just chill out until then?

Then again, I'm more interested in getting into painting and constructing the models than I am in actually playing the game, so maybe it doesn't matter. That new Celestine model looks cool, is there any chance that it would stop being made super quick? I would definitely want one of those once I become confident in painting the models.

Are Warp Talons worth it? with a raptor talon of course, they just cost a lot of points and im not sure if the deep strike is worth it, even if they can assault on the same turn.

Also im starting a night lords force and trying to figure out if i want to go with the raptor talon or the Chaos Warband detachment.

Do a lot of armies have fearless units? would it be better just to get a well rounded force?
>>
>>51056332
EC short for emperor children, yes?
I think the joke is you called the Chaos marine squad tacticals.

In all seriousness it's hard to know what to equip them with because Slaanesh gives them a combat focused buff but no real way to get there.
I would equip them with close ranged weapons like meltas and and extra close combat weapons and drive them up the field ASAP, if you get counter charged you will hit the average unit first because of I5 and if you survive their shooting you can also shoot and charge them yourself.

Power weapons aren't worth it on 1 wound champions, equip them with high strength, low ap2 weapons to take on hard targets and then charge to clean up soft targets with your melee attacks.
>>
>>51055864

If

>fighting marines

No

>not fighting marines

Yes.

Fearless is prevalent only because marines are prevalent.

Unfortunately, fear isn't that helpful against non-fearless armies. Furthermore, Warp Talons are locked into lightning claws, so they're forced to be MEQ blenders regardless.

Blind is okay.

Basically it depends on your meta.

>>51056523

>>
>>51056527

Depends what you mean.

>Successor chapter
Using parent chapter's rules is the logical thing to do in almost every case

>Using any rules you want for your custom fluff chapter

Go ahead m8, literally will never be bad imo even if you pick the WAAC-faggiest tactics, so long as they actually fit your fluff.

>Using a different chapter's rules when the chapter your models are painted as has its own rules

This seems pretty WAAC-faggy to me. Possible exception if you're a successor with really terrible FW rules and you'd rather use the original founding chapter's rules.

tl;dr I think it could make you a bit of a dick if you do it for bad reasons
>>
>>51056527
Kinda depends on the legion.
Some of them are still relatively intact and have a unified paint scheme/look (fx Word bearers) while others are horribly fragmented so you can get away with painting them like whatever (Emperor's Children)

For loyalists, unless the chapter doesnt have a personal chapter tactic, i'd look at you weird, but still play.
>>
>>51056527
kinda

If you're using ultramarines and going "no really my guys are using white scars chapter tactics" people will give you the stink eye. Same goes for night lords who "just happen to be nurgle worshippers and using death guard rules".

Like, that's what custom chapters/warbands are for.
>>
>>51056512
I don't really see the need for the Goliath Trucks. Your Acolytes are going to be pitching Demo charges out the backs of their vehicles rather than charging, so you might as well shove them in the Rockgrinders and drop the trucks. That would free up 300 points, which you could invest in a fairly bare-bones Subterranean Uprising - a Primus (which would also give you a proper Warlord), 5 Metamorphs with claws or whips, and two units of 10 Acolytes with Icons.
>>

From a technical stand point you use to man "to be" verbs early on. It's always best to use active verbs.
You seem to rely a but too much on adjectives. Though it does make it drag on in a couple parts, it doesn't ruin it, just something you should be aware of.
Why are you calling the emperor the god prime minister?
There's no need for the copyright symbol. Esspecialy when in every other instance you seem to be using names that make it clear what your referencing without actually using the GW name for it.
Besides that, it was an interesting read. Doesn't make clear what his acts of valor are, but that should be easily fixes

Half the joke is the list has no characters in it.

The Goliaths get to Infiltrate or Outflank with the Acolytes, and they get Tank Hunter on their TL Autocannons. They're basically budget razorbacks.

The Rockgrinders are mostly budget hellhounds. I might turn the remaining 2 into Clearance Incinerator ones just for cohesion, drop dozer blades from the Russes, and give them Hull Lascannons instead, because fuck it, Geneblower is a hilarious idea.
>>
>>51056647

>>
What's actually better for Night Lords? Traitor Legions or Astartes Legions (30k)?
>>
Trying to learn the rules. One thing I don't understand.

From what I'm reading, creating a new squad doesn't cost additional points. For example, one squad of 8 Fire Warriors costs exactly the same as two squads of 4 Fire Warriors.

Why would I ever choose the single bigger squad? By dividing into two squads, I have more leniency with squad cohesion, can split my fire between two targets if I want to, I force my opponent to use an extra attack to wipe out the same number of models, and so on.

I know that some specific upgrades work better with larger squads, but those seem like specific exceptions. Am I missing something, or am I right in thinking your squads should be as small as possible?
>>
>>51056421
1/3 Warp Talons in the formation should be fine. Even without charge bonuses they should kill 1 marine each in a turn

Morale checks are harder to cause to big units and they are harder to wipe out completely.

Also most of the missions award killpoints for killed units.

In the end, MSU (Multiple Small Units) is a very good tactic and if you could make those small units durable enough *cough*Riptide*cough*, killpoints is not a great concern.

>>
>>51057067

Generally, having more, smaller squads is the norm and is what is preferred. This is called MSU (Multiple Small Units). However, there are a couple situations where you would want larger units.

1. You take more firepower to wipe out or be forced to permanently flee. If you have a minimum squad of Fire Warriors, they would die to shooting that kills 4 FW. But if you had 8 FW, you'd still be alive and still holding that objective for points. However this works the other way around. The game is so powerful at the moment that most shooting can kill all 8 FW anyway, so it's better to just limit the amount of models they can kill to 4 by taking a minimum sized squad.

2. You are limited in army slots and can only fit one squad of that type because your other slots are filled with other units.

3. You are poor and can't afford to buy a transport for an additional squad so it's better for one larger squad to ride in the transport you do own (irrelevant for Tau because lol Devilfish).
>>
>>51057142
>Morale checks are harder to cause to big units and they are harder to wipe out completely.
Well, morale checks aren't a thing in one-model squads.
If your squad is big enough where adding a few models realistically changes those odds, then they probably aren't tanking any shots anyways. I've watched a battle reports, and almost every infantry squad for most factions will lose 3-6 models minimum every time they're fired on. When half your squad wipes on a breeze, you're going to be rolling morale no matter how big it is.

Kill points and first blood (I've seen videos with that?) are very good points, though.

You only prime models for painting once the models are complete. That doesn't necessarily mean assembled - it is a good idea to prime SM/CSM legs and torsos separate from heads and arms/weapons, to make sure that you get an even coverage. That being said, you should always make sure that any gaps are filled, mouldlines removed, etc. It should look as it should painted, only without there being any paint on it. Got it?
>>
What cases does /tg/ use for their models? I don't really like the GW hard shells, I've been looking at Battle Foam and Table Wars - but I'm curious if anyone has any other suggestions.

That's what people usually do. If you wanted to not have to do this and still be able to identify transports, you should paint the markings on them properly. The Veteran Rhinos should have the veteran 1st company color scheme, squad #2's Rhino should have the same markings and 2 symbols as the squad, etc.

My whole idea for an army is that I have (or rather will - I'm working on them) some stuff as pure Black Legion, some stuff painted BL, but with clear Nurgle conversions, some marines with CCWs painted as BL, but with one shoulder pad red. Basically universtal stuff, like Raptors, Rhinos and Havocs would be clearly BL, while some marines, bikers and a lord would be nurgly BL, and some marines and a lord on a juggy would be khorney BL. Would it be fine with you Anons if I were to run the force as BL/DG/WE interchangeably (ofc themeing with god-aligned units, when using DG/WE)?

i have what may be a stupid question

so looking at the Traitor Legions book, looking at Death Guard, building a Vectorium.....

I must build 1 core and 1 aux, i am able to have up to 4 command, and any number of additional core or aux......okay check. I totally understand.

why is the command formation red? you get the command benefits for death guard just for running the vectorium, not running the command formation.....so if I have a sorcerer and i run him in the chaos warband he gets obsec....but if i run him as command he doesnt?

can someone help me out here I dont know if there is any special rules for the command formation or why it is red.

oh and does the spawn formation not have any formation benefit? I dont know where the datasheet for the formation is, like what book it is in. it is not in traitors hate or traitor legions books

Where do you guys nick your paints and tools from? I'm making a list of all the paints I need and it's shooting into about 15. Is that sorta normal? I'm trying to keep it simple and listen to Duncan. Tools you can buy from anywhere. Get clippers to cut parts out of the sprue. Get small clippers because some parts are really small and it is easier and more precise to cut them off.

Unlike anon here claims >>51058180
it is not necessary imo to buy the Citadel glue. You can if you want to. I myself have bunch of different glues for different purposes, but since you're a beginner, you can buy just one. Revell's plastic glue for example is very good, quite cheap and lasts for ages. Or just go with some cheap Walmart glue, will probably work as well. Also since you're a beginner, you can start with low quality brushes, but I'd recommend you investing some money in them. Don't buy the absolutely cheapest pack, most likely they will be so badly made that painting with them will be a pain in the ass. For miniature painting having a good tip on the brush is the most important thing. Also it is important that the "base" of the brush is able to hold some paint.
>>
>>51058119

Are you retarded? First, stop using redpill as a verb, it sounds stupid and the meme is stupid. Second, why are you even painting your models at all if you don't find it extremely appealing to pick a specific coherent scheme or chapter? Well, basically anything associated with magic of any stripe is warp-associated unless it's specifically technology like the Necrons. Admech are a bit of both because apparently some of their tech can actually fuck with the warp accidentally. Or on purpose. I mean they were able to mix chemicals to create sentient, horrifying, malevolent fire, so there's that.

Anyway, so Saintly powers are a manifestation of faith so strong it bends the world around it to better suit that faith, and also I guess channel the Emperor or something. Celestine is a psychic sledgehammer on the Immaterium in that regard. Likewise, Sorcery is rules-lawyering the Immaterium while the Immaterium rules-lawyers back, and regular old psykers are just psychics using their mind to bend it to their will, with all the risk of backlash. Then there's the Rune magic the Space Wolves which also operates by different means which aren't really ever elaborated on before spirit wolves start spurting from the ground like geysers.

cheap wargear that doesnt really change the outcome of what your opponent is going to do or effect their actual playstyle, those are totally interchangable between each game. no one expects you to have 12 different sgts for each squad for each conceivable layout of your sgt.

normal ppl are like power weapon, powerfist, plasma pistol, or combi-something......those are all anyone that isnt a complete autist gives a shit about. no normal well adjusted person is gonna be like wait wait wait....i dont see a meltabomb on that guy so long as you say all sgts have meltabombs.

hell most ppl assume that ALL sgts are gonna have a melta bomb.
>>

>without ever hearing

You mean seeing. Only people that don't even hear about the Emperor, and they do exist in small amounts, wouldn't have heard of the Emperor's avenging angels of death. That's why there's a lot of stories about people being in awe when they first see a marine, but they did at least know of them beforehand.
>>
>>51058642

>space marines aren't common knowledge

I thought most people knew about the Emperor's holy angels. Not anything about them specifically, but that they exist.
>>

Between the Start Collecting boxes and the Armored Assault kits building an army is cheaper now than it's been in a long time.

The problem with IG is that it's a horde army, so you're going to have to spend a shitload of money to get a decent amount of points.

If you're poor, go Space Marines. Their point costs are higher and they have a shitload of kits and bundles and boxed games, and as a side bonus fucking everyone has Space Marines lying around so it's easy to find cheap used stuff if that's your bag.

It's not exactly fluffy, but an optimal Death Guard Lord should have a Bike and a Sigil. Then give him either just a Power Fist or Power Fist / Lightning Claw. Usually he going in some Bikers, but you could run him with the Raptors for now. DG Bikers are really strong if somewhat out of character for their original legion fluff.

T6 is just really, really strong for a multiwound model with FNP. Always getting FNP rolls and only suffering 1 wound regardless of strength means you can run into Walkers and similar high strength monsters without fear. You'll only watch out for force weapons and similar explicitly instant death shenanigans (Assuming you don't roll EW for warlord trait).

Go for it. There's nothing magical about GW's standard colors. As long as you're sticking to Acrylics designed for miniatures you'll be fine. Well, following your line of posts on this thread you obviously isn't looking for C&C. Yet you still posted a picture on all the cool stuff you did on him, looking for a reply I imagine?

Well, heres some;

First up, accept the C&C given. Its not always nice, and its often the stuff you yourself thought "it doesn't show that much". Just deal with it!

Second, Yes, fix the fucking gaps and mold lines. No bitching, no "Nuhu" no replying back as a fucking autistic 5 year old. Just say "Yea, its still not finished yet, Ill get right on it!", no need to be a douche about it.

Third pointer. I'm no personal fan of the "real" battle damage, Id prefer it when its mostly painted on. But you have done it your way so Ill give the tips I can. When doing damage and weathering, always ask "how did it get there?" before applying the effect you're looking for. For instance, what created the .. well the weathering on his scripture? It just looks filed down to be honest, and you risk letting it just look sloppy if you paint it up now. Not to mention the small bits and debris that might fall of after painting, it will make it look unfinished.
And I think less is more. It will be nice to see what you come up with anon, and how he will look finished. Looking forward to seeing your progress in WIP.

Those are second edition Space Marines. They're really old. Not really worth anything except to have a few as a novelty.

Newer Space Marines are much more detailed and are fairly poseable.

If you're really thinking about getting into 40K I'd suggest finding which friendly local game store (FLGS) in your area has 40K games, then stop by and ask if you can spectate some of them. Alternately, watch some Battle Reports on jewtube.

40K is a bit of an expensive hobby, but now is a really good time to get into it on account of all of the bundles, starter kits, and box sets that are being released. Basically you can grab a Start Collecting! box for any faction for $85 and have a very small but still fieldable army that is a good start toward a fullblown army.

Alternately you could grab the Battle for Vedros starter kit and get a small Space Marine and Ork army for $50 if you don't mind the fact that the models are all push fit and aren't customizable.

Also, take most of what /40kg/ says with a grain of salt, most players are not as hostile and autistic as the people in this general.

If you're interested in the universe/lore of 40K but are a poorfag or don't want to assemble and paint a shitload of minis you can also check out the tons of novels or videogames set in the 40k franchise.

>>
>>51058997

Well that is something people in this hobby disagree about quite heavily. Some use just the spray paints done by modeling companies, some use cheap regular sprays. Personally I at least would stay away from the stuff that is meant for like cars and shit. If you fuck up with those, it's basically impossible to strip it off from the minis. I'm not American so I don't know which of the Krylon sprays are good for minis and which aren't, sorry. I think they're sold in my country as well but here Maston is the more common brand.

>A Second Founding successor Chapter to the Imperial Fists, the Black Templars have always fought to uphold the honour of the Emperor, and of Dorn. However, their first High Marshal, Sigismund, was distrustful of the Codex Astartes, believing it a slight against his Primarch’s teachings. Thus his Chapter has ever been divergent from Guilliman’s Codex, a trait that has become more pronounced as the millennia have ground past.

Thanks for the actual advice and criticism anon. I'm currently trying to go for the effect of a dreadnought suffering battle damage from two major sources. The first being glancing hits from Havoc Autocannons, which do a couple of different things depending on the armour depending on whether or not they penetrate, bounce, or gouge, which is largely a factor of angle and density.

On the flat plate on his shoulder, I put an impact crater for what would have been a solid hit that didn't penetrate(deforms the plate considerably). So he would have taken a direct hit from a couple of autocannons on that spot, but none of them successfully penetrated.

His shoulderpads and sarcophagus have glancing blows on the various joints, although most of the damage is just destroying trimwork. I figure his lettering on his armour poses a strong weakspot in the plating, and just gets naturally destroyed by shrapnel if it's not maintained... My own chapter(Raptors) isn't the kind of people that overly favor bling, so they don't want to maintain the 'pointless' engravings that the dreadnought had to begin with.

Post-painting my plan for most of the battle damage is to first paint the model normally, like I do for the rest of my stuff. And then I'm going to go over all of the chipped parts with a 6b Artist Pencil to fill them in with graphite, which should give the impression of the exposed bare metal underneath all of the damage. For his destroyed eye socket, my plan is to paint up the socket with Soulstone Blue, but the damaged socket will receive two 'thinned' coats of nuln oil gloss, followed by very gentle taps of 4H Graphite.

'Ere We Go!: Units consisting wholly of models with this rule have the Fleet special rule. Whenever they charge, take a LD test (Walkers are considered LD10); if successful, models in the unit become Initiative 4 for all purposes in the first round of assault. If an infantry unit's 'Ere We Go! roll results in a double-6, the unit squabbles amongst themselves, dealing D3 S3 AP- hits that are Randomly Allocated to non-characters in the unit, rather than making a Charge Move

On the plus side you have a pretty cool looking model.

How did you paint it? Post pics.

Anyone have any ideas for a Skitarii force themed around history and re-discovering the past of mankind? The idea is that their tech priest is obsessed with recovering information on history (I just want an excuse to shoehorn ancient empire references into my force desu)
So far all I've come up with to represent this on the TT is to have a load of scrolls like on purity seals on them as well as throwing skulls and bones from the AOS Skeleton kits on them like archaeologists at some kind of a dig site, maybe a few tomb stones too. Maybe even doing the cloaks like huge scrolls with ancient tales and timelines along them?

I'm not looking for whole conversion ideas, just ways to make them my own. Also any colour scheme ideas would be great because I can't see the hot pink & cream cloaks I wanted to do on them fitting with this lore, I want them to feel almost wizard/necromancer-y, a way you can tell they're linked to history if that makes any sense?
I'm still coming up with this stuff so it's probably just incoherent rambling, any help would be appreciated though, especially ways to make it work for vehicles and colour schemes, I'm thinking it's going to have to be done in earthy/dark tones to pull it off honestly .

Just GW regular´ol plasma cannon. Looking at several other GW plasma cannon, they are oval. So if you have a perfectly round one, you got a bad cast mate.
>>
>>51059707
Yeah. It's basically buying a whole army in one shot instead of in parts.

You're asking for advice on how to paint your toys and trying to look down on others? You can't even meme properly.

I red an article from an old WD where they also showed how to make acid battle damage, looked cool as hell, but I just cant remember how they did it. But if you like real battle damage, try searching for it, you might get lucky, will be yet another addition to the weathering effects on future vehicles.

I mean, technically your theme is just the AdMech as a whole. That's literally their other job other than building shit and being crazy.

I made this little template for my Skitarii but you can easily color it however you want. I did it all in MSpaint too so you can just fiddle with that if you're not artsy like me.

This looks nice, I might start a Stormtrooper force.

I took a lot of techniques from the Modeling Masterclass textbooks, hence where I learned about the pencil lead technique. Pic related was my experiments with trying to use it alongside Typhus Corrosion.

I just recently read about a technique that simulates Radiation Burns on metal, where they took an ultra-thin spray of kind of a metalic black. It would look totally sick on any mechanicus vehicles, but would be totally out of place on my Raptors, who spend 99% of their time trudging through swamps in order to get into an idea sniping position to assassinate some poor bastard.

The next thing I want to try is combining several mud effects by layering up sprinkles of all 4 different mud powders, and then adding mineral spirits/isopropyl to the model to settle it. Looks great on treads.

But in the case of my venerable dread, he's going to instead have exposed rusty metal from poor maintenance, so he'll get layers of fun rust colours on him like FATMAN has on his claws.

Oh I get that, I just want my guy's niche to be going after old historic shit, not fancy tech or STCs, just stuff you'd find in a history book and the kind of relics we have in the real world, just old swords and jewellery and stuff.
Just not sure about how I'd show it in the minis themselves is all, especially vehicles. Maybe I'll hit up the history board and see if they have any ideas.
Thanks for the template, I've been looking for something like that for ages.

is it a GW? if so, they will ban you for life. if they follow store policy. if more liberal, they will warn you.
>>
>>51057966
Depends on how obvious it is.
>>
>>51059688
Aww, I was hoping the new Admech formation would actually be usable and decent so I could have some damn variety, but it looks like it's just a load of everything. At least I have most of that stuff already, just need another SC, the electros, another dragoon and another box of robots, not like anyone will ever field the damn thing in a normal game.
>>
>>51060019
There's more than just one.
>>
>>51060019
The bundle could be the max size formation, the actual formation could be more malleable.
>>
>>51060049
GW has always sold minimum boxes needed to make a formation.
Thats likely the minimum size.

I guarantee it's just "War Convocation 2:Electro Priest boogaloo"

So 90% locked in choices in return for some insane buff. Then everyone will call it OP despite the fact that there is no customisation in the list, so once your opponent works out the weaknesses, you're turbofucked.

>>51055961
I didn't know robots could show signs of inbreeding - until now.
>>
Would a Nurgle-only Daemonic Incursion work well?

I figure the Nurglings can infiltrate to tag as many objectives as possible early on and force my opponent to split up to go after them. Then the big boys can go after the weakest links.
>>
>>51060037
Well, nice, our Decurion was already a massive, boring, unwieldy piece of shitty mild cheese and now they've produced a worse version.
I hope the rest are actually useable, since Cawl apparently only has a 5++ save and no EW. I guess his FnP rerollable helps a bit, but against anything ID he's a 300pt Company Commander.

>>51060402

Pretty much. Modular, interesting decurion when?

I need some help with rules of bound armies as I've been out of it for a while (yes I know things will change soon).

In any case - it seems like I can take any formation as my army? e.g. Thousand Sons War Coven consisting on 9 sorcerers could literally be my whole army if they fit in the points limit (not that i'm looking to do it). Is that right?

As I understand the downside being I would be that I have no obsec and I don't get the benefits of the overall detachment - among other issues.

Go over to the WIP thread, grab the paint equivalent list. Id personally recommend vallejo, as its decently priced, and has excellent pigment. Pretty much every citadel color has a vallejo equivalent.
>>
>>51057542
Those are fine, the newer marines aren't as "detailed" as people want you to think, and there are only so many poses you can make them in that look good, plus the whole copypasta marine army looks pretty sexy if you rank it up right. Marines are marines, they're not really there to be pretty or cool, they're there so you can field the other cool shit in your army while having troops.
