OK guys I'm trying to think of a cool use for Veterans that isnt just fucking throw in chimera and point at enemy blobs with special weapons.

So for 141 points, you can get

>sergeant harker
>Heavy weapons squad
>3 sniper rifles
>Forward sentries

Park that in a nice piece of cover and thats a lot of firepower with good saves and can't get raped by charges too hard.

the CSM terminator kit doesn't even come with 5 combibolters and power weapons - the default loadout!

Imagine if the tactical squad box only came with 7 bolters, a combiflamer (no combiplas or combigrav), 1 bolt pistol, a power sword (no chainsword), a meltagun (no plasma, flamer, or grav), and the missile launcher. It'd be shit

I am pretty sure the reason the default squad size for CSM terminators was reduced to 3 was because of the kit.

some primers are OK for miniatures, some are not. Thin coats are best.

I'm just sad that it's a power mace instead of anything else. Power maces suck in a 3+ meta. Like, at least give the Termi Champion some special rule(s) or something. Like Zealot or something for WB. Would be cool if termi squads were lead by termi dank apostles.

I like the more vertical combiplasma you see on some of the loyalist kits (the ones with the plasma on top, no the ones where it is an underbarrel plasma). There is no chaos bit for that as far as I am aware, so it has to be converted, or you have to add spikes or something to the loyalist bits. Shit sucks yo.

>>
>>51051185

Well if you like heavy weapon teams then I guess it's good...but it's not going to win you many games.

Some thoughts:

If your goal is to field a lot of weapon teams and still perform moderately well, put one on your CCS. They have BS 4 and can shoot out of the chimera.

Drop the veterans and buy 10 more basic infantry for a rounded 50. Blob them all together.

Buy a psyker, make him level 2 and cast prescience on your 50 guys in conjunction with whatever order your officer gives every turn.

Optionally, drop the leman russ and buy a wall of martyrs bunker for 50 points, use the extra points to buy another squad of autocannons and stick them in there (second squad can sit on battlements for cover saves). You can also upgrade it to an ammo dump and get preferred enemy on your guns that way.
>>
>>51051218

superheavy transports, yes
>>
>>51051047

Too bad you need four to max them out.

>>51051217
I feel like he'd be a Fire Dragon

>>51051243
Actually, yeah. They're roughly at the level of Eldar units that are great, but not as great as super stronk stuff like Spiders or Scatbikes. Plus they're a lot more than the S3 shots (which you shouldn't underestimate, it performs the same a storm bolter vs MEQ and slaughters GEQ in droves), since they can dish out plenty of haywire, ignores cover blasts, they can kill any flier short of a superheavy almost guaranteed, and have an 18" movement to top it all off.

They're a good contender for most flexible unit in the codex.

>>
What do you think is the life expectancy of a guardsman?

One that has a commander with a brain and doesn't make him run in front of tanks to draw their fire.

>>
>>51051337
decent enough

Most guardsmen fight boring shit like rebellions and other crap that the PDF can't handle for some reason. You don't hear about them, because those battles aren't interesting.

Instead you hear about guardsmen on death worlds fighting superhuman aliens. The life expectancy there is much worse.

I got a fire warrior set in 2002 for my birth day, slowly built up a collection since then.
Since not everyone in our group has full armies we're starting at 1000pts.
For opponents I'd potentially be facing Guard, Dark Angels, Nids, Eldar, Tau, Thousand Sons, Inquisition,

How does this look for an all comers list?

>I am pretty sure spamming rockets is the way to go, but I don't really know a way to do that effectively.

Orks actually have one of the better anti-air options in the game, Traktor Kannons. 30 ppm gets you a Skyfire rokkit, but if glances or penetrates a Flyer, it's automatically Immobilized. And if a Flyer suffers that result, then they need to roll a D6, and on a 1 or 2, they crash and burn.

As to the rest, if he doesn't have a lot of access to Ignore Cover, bikers are a solid option. Another good choice might be a Green Tide formation, if you can field it. 100+ Boyz with a bunch of hidden Power Klaw Nobz, all FNP and Fearless thanks to HQ additions.

Tankbustas used to be our go-to option before the Great Grenade Nerf of '16, and now they're rather lackluster. Lootas are never a bad choice, serving well against light vehicles and they're not bad against MEQ either, just by weight of fire and high strength.

As to assaulting, there's really only one choice worth considering: MegaNobz. Everything else is pretty poor; Boyz are only worth considering in a Green Tide, and regular Nobz are so laughably bad as to hurt.

Newfag here
Do models get rotated out or something? The only XV88 models I can find are the ones where they're holding a single cannon. I can't find pic related where they shoulder two of them. Are these no longer legal, or do they simply not make them anymore and I'll have to buy them secondhand or something?

Although High yield missile pods are a better choice over Broadside Rail guns as the stats got dropped on them.

Would 40k be better if more weapons had limited Ammunition? Such as rocket batteries only being 1 or 2 shots max. High strength weapons have a cooldown period. Just more funky weapon rules.

Second newfag question: how anal are people about model accuracy?
I don't want to have to swap out or, god forbid, drop another $100+ just to configure a single unit in my army or denote that one guy's a sergeant or whatever.

I'm guessing it's a house problem, but can't I just say that railgun dude has high-yield missiles? Maybe use a toothpick flag to denote it?

Which is fun when you play the Ork guy who runs the old Trukks that are roughly 1/10th the size of the new Trukks.

The old Space Marine Rhinos are a little smaller than the new ones. I think it's hilarious that people spend $60-$80 on mk2 Rhinos with resin mk1 conversion kits from Forge World for use in 30K games when you can pick up old mk1 Rhinos for $25 or less all day every day on ebay.
>>
>>51051774

>>
>>51051820
Oh God I remember those trukks. They were basically the size of a deck of cards. Absolutely awful. But nah, the old rhinos look like garbage too friend. Cheap is fine but looking decent is a whole other Matthew.
>>
>>51051774
Magnets are a Tau players best friend.
All my Crisis suits and Stealth suits can swap all their weapons and subsystems to be WYSIWYG,
My Devilish, Hammerheads and Skyrays are all interchangeable.
Riptide and broadsides, same deal.
Even the DS8 turrets with the Fire Warriors.

My chaos are less modular though. Only my Termies, Rhinos/Preds, and 'Raider are magneted to swap loadouts.
>>
>>51051797
>>51051809
I want to use the old configuration and I like the older model better. DoW Tau is what got me into the game in the first place. It's just that I don't want to have to rebuy/paint my army just so I can have one dude use missiles for one game.

>>51051825
I know about magnets, but would I be able to equip the newer model's gear onto the older, smaller model's body? Or vice-versa?
>>
>>51051820

You want Rhinos to be bigger though. Old Rhinos are just for neato factor. If you wanna bitch about old Ork Trukks, try playing one of those faggots who literally use a bucket on wheels as a scratch build with the original "as many orks as you can fit in the trukk" rule.
>>
>>51051849
Not easily.

>I think it's hilarious that people spend $60-$80 on mk2 Rhinos with resin mk1 conversion kits from Forge World for use in 30K games when you can pick up old mk1 Rhinos for $25 or less all day every day on ebay.

It's because the new one looks better, moron. They didn't have to buy a FW Rhino at all when they could use the cheaper 40K one so they're obviously only buying the expensive one for looks.
>>
Is letting a charging unit get first hits in regardless of initiative a bad idea? I feel that would be the trade off for overwatch.
>>
>>51051820
I think it's hilarious that people spend $60 on resin and box set pre heresy armor when they could just use old single piece 2E pieces and snapfits

I think it's hilarious that people spend money on models when they could just use cardboard cutouts or paper with unit names written on them.
>>
>>51051849
>I know about magnets, but would I be able to equip the newer model's gear onto the older, smaller model's body? Or vice-versa?
This is dependent largely on how exactly you magnetize them.

But on an XV88 the secondary weapons and upgrades are really going to be the only think that would be interchangeable between old and new models due to their dramatic difference in size.

While I am the first one to REEEEEEEEEEEEE at anyone who says "40k should be streamlined" (yeah, like The Elder Scrolls was streamlined? or WHFB? fuck you), I do think ammo might add a bit too much bookkeeping due to the current state of the game. We're unfortunately playing huge games with sometimes hundreds of dudes these days, and I don't have faith in some neckbeard faggot WAAC's ability to do more than immediate arithmetic and be honest about it. Plus there are already units with limited ammo, like combi-weapons, HK missiles, fliers with bombs, etc. So it's just a matter of applying an extant paradigm to models that it might balance/be interesting on.

I kinda want to see shit going well for the imperium on Cadia, like they win a pretty major battle. Then, as they're all recouping and getting ready for the big push, their Voxes get turned to 11 and start screeching. The next thing they know, Warp Talons start raining from holes in the sky as a bunch of Night Lords burst out of the shadows and REEEEing all over the place. Dreadclaws scream out of the stratos puking out Hellbrutes and roasting guardsman as terminators suddenly appear in the middle of everything and start tearing into the center of the recovering army.

There's an artifact, Poxwalker Hive which allows you to denote a unit of chaos cultists at the the start of each turn within 7" giving them fearless and FNP but the unit can't run or make shooting attacks. In addition return d3 slain models every turn to each effected unit.
For 20 points this is fucking INSANE.
>>
>>51052593
Don't you need two infantry squads per platoon for it to be valid?

Otherwise, don't mix heavy weapons on the teams, pick one gun and stick with it. If you mix weapons then you lose potential damage no matter what you shoot at.

Two Hydras at 1k points seems a little excessive as well.
>>
>>51052533

Having an entire Tactical Squad being able to shoot twice in one turn is pretty nice if you had planned on having them stay put anyway. If they were sitting on an objective or something they could just blast the fuck out of stuff.

The only downside is it's conditional on your Captain being nearby, which limits its effectiveness.

If you're starting a SM army using the SC box as a core it's pretty nice.

1. you are too slow, get some transports for securing them objectives

2. way too much AA for a 1000 point list, drop one Hydra if not both. If your opponent brings more then 1 flyer to a 1000 point battle then he is a colossal faggot. Take Wyvern's instead

3. drop that plasma/grenade launcher from the platoon command and get flamers

4. Try to keep your heavy weapon squads oriented to a certain objective (3 missile launchers/3 autocannons/3 lasscannons)
>>
>>51052656
I see, I knew I did something wrong, I used battlescribe to make it legally, then forgot to add the other two squads in, whoops. Guess I'll have to drop a thing or two.
My overall go for the army is holding the enemy in place and letting the artillery take out anything too heavy for the meat to handle.
People may disagree, but the more I research and look at it conscripts for me seem to be a must. Dirt bloody cheap, you can stick 50(!!!!) of them into a platoon. With orders, if successful, it'd be a nightmare despite their abominable BS. I'll have two platoons, two squads of infantry in each, conscripts in one of them. Maybe I'll ditch the heavy weapons team and a hydra. Love me some arty though...
>>

>drop that plasma/grenade launcher from the platoon command and get flamers

>Why is that? I figure the chance of an exploding plasma weapon is a risk, but.

They are too cost ineffective unless massed in specialist squads. (veterans with 3 of them or 3 meltas in a chimera) For instance that single plasma gun/grenade launchers you played 15+ points for to be in a somewhat static squad wont do nearly as much as lets say an extra lasscannon in a heavy weapons squad or 3 autocannons.

Gotcha, easy done. I'll rejig the whole thing, appreciate it anon! Blob of death coming.
for purchasing conscripts, I know for cadians you can buy the shock troopers and paint the white stripe, but are there any other (i.e. cheaper haha) options?
Also, I can believe that you can attach a commissar to a conscript squad. Is this true? Is it a good idea? I'm still wrapping my head around it all, but do orders count as leadership tests? Because if not, no point. I know a commisar can use summary execution to reroll a failed leadership test. That'd be mighty useful.
>>51052780
That makes a lot of sense actually, better to put the points into a dedicated squad rather than a mishmash. Flamers seem cheap enough, good choice?
>>
>>51052803
>for purchasing conscripts, I know for cadians you can buy the shock troopers and paint the white stripe, but are there any other (i.e. cheaper haha) options?
there is a 5 man monopose box of cadians for 8€ , this is the cheapest GW option for massing lasgun infantry but you'dd probably be better of scouring for cheap 2nd hand unpainted guardsmen. there's bound to be some drifting around with the release of armored assault
>Also, I can believe that you can attach a commissar to a conscript squad. Is this true? Is it a good idea?
yes you can and yes it most definitely is (for more on why see below)
I'm still wrapping my head around it all, but do orders count as leadership tests?
yes they do, you roll on the highest leadership present in the unit which is a 9 with a commissar and a 5 without him so it's definitely recommended to add one for FRFSRF you haven't lived untill you've rolled +100 dice for 1 unit in a single shooting fase
>Because if not, no point. I know a commisar can use summary execution to reroll a failed leadership test. That'd be mighty useful.
he can't use it for all leadership tests , only on failed pinning , fear and morale tests
but on the bright side it's not a re roll , it automatically counts as having passed. he also gives the unit stubborn which means leadership tests are always taken unmodified (which is very useful in melee)
the downside on the execution is that if you botch your execution (on a 1 or 2) your opponent gets to chose an IG model in the unit that gets executed instead so keep that in mind when adding stuff like psykers or priests to the unit
though you can now safely circumvent this by simply allying in psykers and priests trough the imperial agents book
>>
Wouls the CSM side of Dark Vengeance make a decent start for Alpha Legion?

May I suggest something like pic related. Just put one 10 man squad in that chimera so they can book it if a certain out of reach objective becomes critical and let that Leman Russ be its close support. Otherwise the list has plenty of anti infantry and good anti vehicle arsenal.

A flamer in each squad will make sure everyone thinks twice before they assault your defense line or take a bunch of wall of death hits.
>>
>>51052906
>yes they do, you roll on the highest leadership present in the unit which is a 9 with a commissar and a 5 without him so it's definitely recommended to add one for FRFSRF you haven't lived untill you've rolled +100 dice for 1 unit in a single shooting fase
This is literally my dream. You have no idea how bad I want to do this haha
>he downside on the execution is that if you botch your execution (on a 1 or 2) your opponent gets to chose an IG model in the unit that gets executed instead
Yeah, but is a priest or psycher good to add to a conscript squad or is it a waste? Not sure.
shame you can't reroll failed orders. Though if your commander is a creed or something, FRFSRF for DAYS. If you focused attention on say a tactical marine squad or chosen squad, (whatever) and they weren't in cover, game over for them. And engaging in Melee with something deadly? Well I have a Vindicaire Assasin for just the thing. (He can shoot at a target even if your squads in melee with them can't he?) Also artillery, particuallry Wyrvens, basalisk is too risky.
Cheers on the tips for collecting the conscripts.

a priest is questionable unless you plan on getting into melee , and even then it'll be hard pressed to make it's points back , it does however give you a backup plan in case your commissar gets sniped
a psyker can do wonders as it creates a symbiotic relationship
the giant blob protects the psyker by acting as a meatshield and in turn the blob can get buffed by it
telekinesis and divination are the best two groups for this in my opinion
with telekinesis if you roll invisibility or shrouded for your guard it makes them a lot more durable , if not you now have a giant meat shield to get your psychic shriek up field
with divination you can give the whole unit twin linked
if you're going this route get an astropath and make him ML2 (from IA) , he's 25 points cheaper than a primaris psyker with ML2 and the primaris' extra wounds don't matter much as he is executed by the commissar when he perils , even if he's from IA

i don't think the vindicare can shoot into melee , nothing can unless specifically mentioned otherwise

also this is my personal opinion : i fucking love basilisks they are my babies. The 36 inch min range may be off putting but keep in mind that you can fire below the minimum range if you have line of sight
With the emperors wrath artillery formation from mont'ka they have twin linked within 18 inch of a vox caster , and they can be ordered to ignore cover by the attached CCS
ST9 AP3 twin linked ignores cover is brutal and ST9 ordnance against side armor is so as well

Our defence line was composeed of three line of trenches
the being the longer one, was full of cadians with flamers, with some hellhounds and chimera behind them on the left ready to charge in for backup, while the right had something like five leman russes, the second trench line, considerably smaller than the first hosted a pair of wyverms. lascannon squads and a Armored battlegroup vanquisher with beast hunter shells. the third line was just a baneblade and a platoon of death korps of krieg entrenched around it (sadly two squad of my modified cadians had to be used as im still painting my dkk infantry).

Of course the necron C'tan and the knight smashed trought the right of the first line and tried to head straight to my baneblade, but my friend with pask on punisher menaged to destroy the knight before it could reach the trench.

You can see the mould lines all over and the drybushing isn't helping you at all.. You should prime in silver, black ink it to bloody hell but water it down so it doesn't pool on the flat surfaces like most scrubs do, then go to the joints and most often rusted areas of the model and put down some coats of brown and progress up to the orange you have there but not quite as fuzzy.
As a suggestion I have to advise you against gluing the arms on your miniatures before you finish painting. It's easiest to put a dab of greenstuff on the ball joint so you know exactly which way you'll apply the arms. This allows you to glue both arms into one section to pop on and glue when everything's done being painted.

The rule is that only the unit it's a dedicated transport for CAN begin the game inside it, but not that they MUST.

The confusion is probably because previous editions forced you to begin inside your dedicated transport unless the unit couldn't be embarked for some reason (such as a ten man tactical squad with a razorback).

>>51053559
They'd be terribly equipped as Crimson Slaughter too, yeah?

>>
>>51053700
Duncan's stuff on Warhammer TV is just basic techniques applied extremely well, so yes, it's totally possible, but you probably won't reach that level without plenty of practice.

And yes, mixing and matching various melee and ranged weapons is a terrible practice you usually want to avoid, no matter the army. Generally you want to have a clear objective for the squad to be accomplishing (ie tank hunting, or mowing down hordes), and varied weapons means that whenever you attack one kind of target, you're wasting most of the squad's potential.

With that said, the starter set is still fine as a starter set. Down the line when you have a grasp on gameplay and some idea of what you want your Chosen to be doing, you can look into remodelling your dudes to be a more uniformly equipped squad.
>>

>>
>>51053700
>Is it actually plausible for people to paint to the standard Duncan does on Warhammer TV? It just seems insane to me.

Yes. Duncan's techniques are all standard stuff and he intentionally avoids in his tutorials all the advanced blending techniques used by the professional painters at GW and elsewhere.

The real key to being able to duplicate what he's doing is learning the brush control to do thin. neat edge highlights. If you can figure out how to steady your hands, control the brush, and have the patience to take your time on those, the rest is all really easy.
>>
>>51053808
Haemonculus is solid. Standard wyches sadly, are really bad right now. You'd be better off opting for the standard Kabalite Warriors. Reaver Jetbikes are still wych cult and very good though.

The Start Collecting box for Dark Eldar is a really, really good value and has good models. That's a great place to start.

>>51053911
Dark eldar have three major types of groups: Kabals, Wych Cults, and Haemunculous Covens

Kabals are your general whatevers. They fight for fame and power or whatever in the DE city and join or raids on shit. Each is run by an Archon with his/her own goals.

Wych cults run the arenas, and have their own power because of how important that is. Their goal is to get their thrill on for themselves and everyone watching. They're lead by a succubus, and they go on raids for slaves, pit fighters, ect and many times the raid is part of the show.

The Covens are all Frankenstein level mad scientists except their mastery over biology is such that they can being you back from a single finger. They raid for parts and shit to put together.

Very brief, sleep addled breakdowns.
>>
>>51054050
Nah thats cool just what I needed to hear.

There's no Coven troops though is there? so I should just go with Kabals instead of wyches?
>>
>>51053911
>Okay fair enough. But what do you mean when you say are still Wych cult?

Just that the reaver jetbike riders are wych models aesthetically. I like using heads and such from wych models on my reavers so I can have cute punk haircuts on my biker girls.
>>
>>51054064
>There's no Coven troops though is there?
Wracks, Grotesques and Talos are all Coven. But you can mix all this stuff, the divisions are more aesthetic than anything.

Covens have their own supplement where its possible to run just coven units plus other formations.

Kabalites are the goto troop, though. Personally, I prefer the gun boat style of 10 in a raider with Splinter Racks, but Venoms are fine, too.

Yeah, im aware of their intended purpose but there are just so many better anti-infantry options for the Blood Angels than Baal Preds. Just trying to think outside the box. Might be nice to use them as Rhino assists and have them drive in front of them to help clear the way if need be.

Yes. Thugs like you always claim to 'like a theme' or 'play fluffy' but its always the most overpowered shit
>>
>>51054737
Do you take shitty loadouts, or spam what's the best?
>>
>>51054842
I try to make it good with what I've got, but also with certain goals. I like the idea of a battlesuit army darting around and charging people with hit and run.
>>
>>51054692
No no she can't. Abbadon died to a botched armour save which means she can't be better than AP3.

Different anon here. I like Black Tide Style Black Templars. Does that make me a cheese beard cuck?

Using a, around, 150pts unit to shield a 35pts unit?

The best way to run them in my option is the flame cannon, still inefficant as fuck but at least it brings something new to the army and can cook SM bikers.

Well to be honest if I wanted an army that really did something beyond "look cool" I wouldn't be drawn into them. Nor would I want to play my Sisters of Battle.

Something about ornate zealots just grabs my attention even if they're mid tier at best and makes me want to play them.

Funny how I seem to only be drawn to armies that don't use psykers though.

I'm having the most trouble with my Harlequins.. Like is it better to give out 3 Harlequin kisses? or leave them (let's say 8 in a unit) all equipped normally and get one extra guy? I guess this is the kind of thing I'll get better at with time..
>>
>>51052607
just take typhus.....they all do that, and if you also use the lost and damed formation you have a 50/50 chance that after each big ass zombie squad dies that they go back into reserves and come back again.....whole armies of recursing fnp zombies!
>>
>>51055145
Of course this has downsides. Like wanting to build an army of Templars with Crusader helmets (nicked from GKs) and in fairly dynamic poses (mostly by using Assault Marines to have them running) while pairing that with the BT kit for chainsword and bolt pistols that look right (via chains) and tabards.

If I get GS and small enough chains I could make tabards, press mold icons for the shoulder pads and manually make chained weapons but that only increases how long it'll take to build an army not decrease it.

So yeah, mainly looking at the kitbashing option.

So eating is optional right?
>>
>>51055324
Alternatively I could be less insane and do MkIII Templars but that eventually drags in FW (or recaster) parts for stuff like heavy weapons and Sigismund (to be a MkIII EC).

Flamestorm is nice. Really starting to doubt the Baal here for any potential use outside of the anti-infantry that rear arnor of 10 also seems like a really stupid thing for something that is going to get charged.
>>
So you think chaos space Marines ever wonder if they're the baddies?
>>
i like the idea
i like painting
i like having shiny things
and i like the game itself
but this costs many shekels
convince me gw employees, of course i'm going guard

It's a ton of money, that's undeniable. There are box deals that make it less painful, but if the cost is too much, either strip and paint old models from Ebay, buy from China, or don't play the game.

You forgot, make your own.

Some talent with wood carving, and you're all set.

drop the cult, throw in a 2 heldrake formation, leaves you with ~160pt... toss in some ML havocs

i suppose i could literally just be a blacksmith or woodcarver and make my own models
i was unironically thinking about blacksmithing at another point in my life

Where are you in your life that you look at warhammer and say, 'this is way too much money'

if you're a college student living off ramen or a father of struggling with 3 kids, dogs and cats, 2 cars and a mortage to pay off you should probably rethink playing 40k at all
>>
Potential new player here. I have been thinking of getting into 40k, but it sounds like there may be a strong possibility of a significant rules rework coming up later in the year. Should I just chill out until then?

Then again, I'm more interested in getting into painting and constructing the models than I am in actually playing the game, so maybe it doesn't matter. That new Celestine model looks cool, is there any chance that it would stop being made super quick? I would definitely want one of those once I become confident in painting the models.
