Have you tried running this list?

Too many chariots. I know that sounds weird but it's true. With 6 Necropolis Knights and 9 chariots you will have a hard time getting enough surface area to get melee attacks off.

You need a Tomb Herald that stays near Settra and prevent him from being sniped, and to ressurect more skelets.

Two sphinxes is usually overkill. I also usually prefer the Royal Warsphinx because the command ability makes Necropolis Knights do mortal wounds on 4+. It also has the Hero keyword so you can give it some ridiculous artifacts like the Tomb Blade or the Book of Shadows.

I would do this:
-1 Skeleton Chariot (140)
-2 Warsphinx (560)
+10 Skeletons (80)
+1 Royal Warsphinx (340)
+1 Bone Giant (200)
+1 Necrotect (100)

Puts you at 2000 exactly.

once they do another balance pass on the game and bring into line the currently overly strong tomb king lists you'll see the floor drop out from under those miniature prices.

The only reason anyone even wants to play tomb kings is because of the units / combos of tomb kings that make them unfairly powerful.

with a rebalance with the new generals handbook I bet that all those people who blew their cash wad on tomb kings will be kicking their own balls because of how shortsighted they were.

now you can analyze the relative durability of your units.

I played Empire in 7th for a small bit, holy order of the steam tank. I haven't played AOS yet but am contemplating a Free People Gunline.

-Is the Hurricanum a must-have for such a list, for the extra accuracy on handgunners?
-What's a good ratio of handgunners to chaff freeguard/outriders?
-What are normal pitfalls I should be prepared to handle?
-What is the best way to defend against weapons that do a number of hits based on unit size (stone throwers, etc)? I'm not seeing any real difference in spreading out versus running the shooty guys in compact blocks, other than defending vs multi-assaults, etc.

One thing that does look cool is the permissive formations and LOS could let me do stuff like running hollow infantry squares, if I really want to get Napoleonic on stuff.
>>
>>50938207
>-Is the Hurricanum a must-have for such a list, for the extra accuracy on handgunners?
Yes

-What's a good ratio of handgunners to chaff freeguard/outriders?
You need enough infantry to stop melee for 2 battle rounds so you can get 3 rounds of shooting. That's tough to do because free peoples have bad saves, low wounds, and bad bravery.
Outriders are for killing wizards, artillery crew, and capturing objectives.

>-What are normal pitfalls I should be prepared to handle?
Fast armies, or anyone that can deep strike. Also shooting armies. Also 2+ rerollable saves. Also units that ignore Rend-1. Also units that deal damage based on the number of models in your unit.
You are also very susceptible to battleshock tests because freeguild have garbage bravery.

>-What is the best way to defend against weapons that do a number of hits based on unit size (stone throwers, etc)? I'm not seeing any real difference in spreading out versus running the shooty guys in compact blocks, other than defending vs multi-assaults, etc.
Use smaller units or focus fire.
Those units exist to counter big swarms of infantry, you need to identify them and destroy them before they can reach you.
>>
>>50938252
Thanks. I'd imagine that the "cheapest squad possible" is ideal for delaying melee, no? After all, if an opponent wants to get in melee, and gets 20 or so attacks, throwing 20 models in front may well be 5, due to said Battleshock.

How valid is MSU for AOS anyway? On one hand, the ability to target multiple units makes it dramatically different from the older Warhammer games while bonuses based on unit size are another thing. On the other hand, Battleshock and pseudo-aoe are things.

Are there any notable units/tricks that let you do move-shoot-move in this game?
>>
>>50938487
>ideal for delaying melee, no?
correct. if running a "gun line" you need speed bumps, preferably multiple layers of speed bumps.

>How valid is MSU
its usually preferable for maneuverability and helping to contain overkill. related to first question.

>move-shoot-move
from memory tomb kings light cavalry can choose to shoot in the charge phase and move in the charge phase if they want. High elf light cavalry can do the same too I believe.

Here's an update just for you anon

I have been spending a lot of time putting together metal models, which has not been fun.

I also finished the bone giant, made a custom base for a tomb scorpion, and have nearly finished the warsphinx - haven't decided what riders to put in it yet. The red and gold clashes with the jade skin but ties it in with the rest of my army, so I'm not sure if I like it or not yet. Trying to find the right mix of gold bits and red bits; it's an ongoing process.

>valkia fails
>carnosaur takes 3 wounds from bloodwarriors
>swings back, 1 damage after everything
>lose initiative
>valkia makes charge
>bloodwarriors and valkia bring carnosaur down with minimal casualties

I try to play him as a monster hunter, having him hunt all the big baddies on the board. But he under performs against the Shit battleline screen that catches him and takes too many wounds or just dies before he can retreat or be reinforced.

Am I playing him wrong? Should he not be a roaming hunter?

What the fuck is wrong with this weapon? It doesn't fit like 12 skavens for now. Has anyone of you build all of your SoD clanrats?
>>
>>50942509
Trying to get through my backlog before starting the SoD stuff, still got a battalion box of Bretonnians and Skaven to get through.
>>
>>50942509
I found I had to angle it further forwards than in that image, (like the angle the bottom-left rat has his spear at,) but otherwise it went on okay.

(Built them when the set was IoB rather than SoD, but I assume the sprues are the same and that.)

What is the primary difference between AoS and regular Warhammer Fantasy lore-wise? I've been reading around and there seem to be differences. Haven't played either miniatures game but I do like the Warhammer RPG and the Warhammer TW game.
>>
>>50942680
IoB was snap fit?
>>
>>50942735
It's a bit too vague at the moment to really be sure, especially when you factor in how long AoS is supposed to be after the old world and how much time passes by between events like the Realmgate wars, which apparently have ended now and civilization is rebuilding itself in all the realms

>>
>>50942875
Yeah, honestly I believe AoS lore is going to be good when it gets more established. The big problem with how it launched and why people still don't really like it was because it got rid of a setting with 30 years of backstory and replaced it with an incredibly vague new setting and didn't really explain what happened. Now they are fleshing it out, so give it time.
>>
>>50942907
I know, seems like they went "Hey guys all that shit got fucked by Chaos, so here's some new shit". Feels kind of cheap...but if they're gonna flesh it out and keep fantasy Warhammer going I'll definitely follow along.

I think if they decide how it grows with worldwide campaigns, like the War of Life, it could be interesting.

This fucking meme.

There are 4 PAGES OF CORE RULES.
The general's handbook provides additional rules and points for pitched battles.

Battle plans, Terrain, and Models all have additional rules on their war scrolls.

All of these things lock together like voltron to create a rather complex ruleset. It's very modular compared to the fucking textbook that 40k or WFB was.

>>
>>50945771
People just use a bit of wire in a cork. or a toothpick, or straightend out paperclip. It isn't anything special.

Also, that is largely personal preference. Some prefer to paint literally every part individually before assembly, but that is a little pointless in my opinion.

I do advise painting parts of a model that would make it difficult to reach other visible parts separately though. For example, leaving shields, or bearded heads off a model to make it easier to paint the body.

>>
>>50946617
Using their mounted units, they're a fast, hard hitting army (when buffed properly) but can't take a hit very well.

Using them as footsloggers is possibly not the greatest idea but they can shoot pretty well and some of their heroes have interesting buffs that you can play around with.

All in all, they're at pretty much the same level that all non-battletome factions are, depending on your skill level.

Out of sheer curiosity, which tournaments? The random turn structure is so integral to AoS, I wonder why somebody would choose to opt out of that.

>>50949267
Corruptor has a devastating command that targets Skaven keyword instead of specific clans and a nice spell that can potentially ravage horde armies. He's also the cheapest at 240, but suffers from sorta mediocre melee and unimpressive durability.
Warbringer is for when you have lots of Verminus keywords, especially in larger games. He also can throw down in a pinch. He's not very tough, but his melee statline makes most big things think twice before engaging him.
Deciever is a very expensive harasser and wizard/warmachine hunter. He'll really need to put in work to earn his keep, but he can be a absolute thorn in your opponent's side, provided he has any sort of vulnerable back field.
Warpseer is garbage. Meh spell, shit command, underwhelming melee. Don't bother.
Screech Verminking is very flexible and can adapt to support most sorts of armies in some form, but he's not doing anything particularly outstanding for any of them.
>>
>>50949658
It varies from club to club/from store to store, with some places being forgiving of going slightly over points, and others having a bit of a zero-tolerance approach to it. I'd say if you aim to be under the points limit when starting out then you can't go wrong & make a bad first impression, you can always expand things slightly if it turns out players near you are more relaxed.

Turn one, I get to plant standard, and toss out my command abilities. You invoke you shit around my properly placed army. Sweet. You can charge at my screen of clan rats. Which are now buffed to shit. Meanwhile, I could win the double turn next time and cheese you right back.

There's an advantage and a disadvantage to everything.

Buddy with hellcannons wins the first turn. Kills my bsb and melts my leader.
Now I have blobs of unbuffed infantry. I have to get across the board to his shit. At least with double turns I have a chance. Otherwise, the game just plays out as if we didn't use turn order.
>>
>>50949766
A proper expansion would be great but I guess it depends on how successful the game was.
Ogor, Vampire and a ton of other factions have no heroes so I'd like them to add some since there are far too many Stormcast and Khorne heroes

I want to take part in local 1k pts tournament. Want to run skaven, have two boxes of SoD and probably I will borrow a Warp Lightning Cannon. Should I change something? Maybe one Warpfire Thrower Weapon Team for a second Mortar? I'm totally newbie so please critique meso I could learn something useful

>>
>>50950022
Combine the Ogres and run one pack master, run a warpfire thrower instead, or ditch mortar two and the pack master for the engineer.

Pack master's buff applies to 1 unit of Ogres. Running two units makes no sense. Get what you need from one instead of two, and don't waste points. The Warlock engineer is capable of using his spell to produce the same amount of damage as a warpfire thrower, at better range.

The poisonwind mortars are situational. I haven't used them and would rather have the guaranteed damage from a warpfire thrower. In your list I would recommend a ratling gun if you could get one.
>>
>>50950022
I am going to assume you have nothing beyond the two Spire of Dawn sets yet:
- Put all rat ogres into one unit for ease of buffing.
- Toss one packmaster and use the spare points to get a warpfire thrower.
- Or toss one packmaster and one poison wind to grab a Grey Seer, since magic will fuck you over. (Convert one out of your second warlord and second warlock).
>>
>>50936605
Well a anon said it so it must be true
>>
>>50950226
Thanks. Wouldn't Mortar be good against bloodbound players with bloodreavers and other skaven players?
>I would recommend a ratling gun if you could get one
Sadly no - as I said, only SoD boxes and cannon
>>
>>50950022
>combine rat ogres
>exchange mortars for flamers
>ditch packmaster 2 for a mortar
>pray it's a casual tourney
>>
>>50950022
-Two units of MSU rat ogors and two packmasters instead of one unit of four and one packmaster. Why?
-Warlord but no Stormvermin to buff. Clanrats go only from 'shit' to 'slightly less shit' under that buff.
-No magic defense or offense.
-PWMs are not horrible, but in nearly all situations inferior to WFTs.

Easy Anon, I just want to have some fun without being wholly devastated. I will be happy to meet other AoS players, inflict a wound or two and show my GF that this game could be fun, like I have already done with MtG, X-wing and other tabletop stuff so I will probably ask for help with High Elves list some day

So, the bottom line is
Leaders
Skaven Warlord (100)
- General
- War Halberd
Packmaster (60)
- Shock

Units
Clanrats x 20 (120)
- Rusty Spear

Warpfire Thrower Weapon Team x 1 (60)
Warpfire Thrower Weapon Team x 1 (60)

War Machines
Warp Lightning Cannon (180)

Total: 1000/1000

Maybe I will change one Warpfire Thrower and Mortar for Engineer after tournament and try which one would be better

It's worth noting all Verminlords have the same 12 wounds and 4+ save.

Warpseers get a 3+ until they throw the orb
Only Verminking can heal himself for d3 wounds.
Corruptor is a must-have for Pestilens of course. As is the Deceiver for Eshin, or he will be.

Disregard this shit, i've been smoking the loony leaf

He actually can REROLL saves as long as he has the Orb, i'm talking nonsense.

If he throws the orb it deals 6 mortal wounds to anything with movement 5 or less. That's powerful for bombing a tough hero, but it has very short range

Confused about Ramapging Destroyers wording. Google gives me nothing sadly.

It says that you can move a D6 as if it was the movement phase, but you cannot run. When they say "cannot run", do they mean run as part of the RD move (i.e making it 2D6) or do they mean that you cannot run when you make your regular move in the movement phase?
>>
>>50951755

Man that was some terrible structuring.
My bad.
>>
>>50951755
It says "as if it was the movement phase" so normally you would be allowed to run in that scenario. They need to add the "you cannot run" so people don't move D6 and then run another D6 with that ability.

You can still run later in that turn. If an ability in one phase stops you from doing something in another phase, it will specifically mention that it works that way.

Like I said it was in the interest kg saving money, since I have to buy 2 boxes of guard either way I figured its better to use all of them, plus the eternal starboard looks great on paper. I know the army sicks against mortal wounds but that seems to be a problem for the faction as a whole

But I agree a priest would be super helpful. But a 4+ sucks (I roll poorly)

I feel like splitting into 3x5 is a bad idea, would running 1x10 and 1x5 with ten warriors be decent?

I feel like seraphim have to invest heavily into their infantry for them to be good, otherwise they are just tax for the dinos
>>
>>50952692
3x5 will be shot to death everytime (or can even be killed by impact hit from a stonehorn- and just outright disseaper aginst the auto 6 mortal wounds of thundertusk.

. I dont see how you can have any meaningful impact with 5 guys.
>>
I have a Sylvaneth question. When placing a Wyldwood it often says that it can't be placed within 1" or 3" of another model; are pieces of terrain, "models"?

I've never been particularly sure and have played it both way. I know in the Slyvaneth allegiance abilities it explicitly calls out "any other piece of scenery".
>>
>>50952611
Reading the one in the last thread. It's a good read. I don't expect to get into tourney's but my group already plays 40k at a casual-competitive level. So we play with SOME of our "tourney units". Like, I bust out my only Riptide every now and then in 1250 or above matches, or Stormsurge in our 4000pts per side 2v2's.
So, we like to use our strong tools, but understand when it's getting cheesy, so we restrain ourselves from getting TOO cheesy.

Would an SC Seraphon still be a decent box to pick up? Or is there a fair trade you'd think I could make?
>>
>>50952692
>I feel like splitting into 3x5 is a bad idea, would running 1x10 and 1x5 with ten warriors be decent?
Yep that's usually how I do it. 10 models won't crumble to mortal wounds immediately and 200 points is not a huge investment for a powerful defensive unit.

Seraphon battleline are usually just a dino tax or a dino screen, but that's fine because the dinosaurs are amazing.

You can run a Bloodclaw Starhost to make Saurus Warriors/Knights/Guard very powerful but that list struggles because it spends a lot of points on melee, and Seraphon are pretty good at shooting.

>>50952728
>he doesn't know about the 2+ rerollable save that ignores rend -1

Guard are really good at what they do.

I sold my army out of rage.
Then i admitted that Aos is just much better, dont regret it tho, as my army was basically un-usable in AoS.

I believed it was going to fail for a bit.
Then came the seraphon and flesh eater and everybody was buying AoS.

The Gyrocopters are a good inclusion, gives you both speed and range.

Why did you make the Grimwrath Berzerker your general instead of the Runeson? The Runesons command ability making your charges more likely is very powerful for a bunch of slow melee units like Fyreslayers.
>>
>>50953408
Because of the sweet +1 Attack from the general ability that combines well with the -1 rend from the Obstinate blade
Which makes the Grimwrath 5 Attacks at Rend -2 D3 damage which will help battle fury (and make the bonus much more valuable)

The magmadroth is fast enough, the auric hearthguard have brutal shooting, gyrocopter have awesome antihorde and glorious movement for dwarf...

I felt like the only units benefiting from the Runeson ability were my anvil/chaff/battelline tax in the form of the 2x5 berserkers.

Newcomer here. Never played any war games before. I have read through a few of the AoS novels though and love the lore.

Is it an ok strategy to say, over a year, collect 3 or 4 of the start collecting boxes? Will they suffice? I really like Storm casts, Sylvaneth, Ironjawz, and Nurgle - but don't want to limit myself to 1 Rmy or special day excessive amounts of one style.

Thoughts? Or is it better to invest in a singular army?
>>
>>50957778

Please ignore my horrible phone spelling.
>>
>>50957778
Honestly no.
You can, ofc, collecting models is part of the hobby but from a gameplay perspective you won't see any wins.

The first 2 factions CAN be played together in an army, and iirc there is a Stormcast + Sylvaneth battalion, the other 2 are seperate factions too
Focus on 1 faction, if they have a battletome, or one Alliance if you want a wider net of models to use
>>
>>50957778
It is generally better to focus on one army for a while.
Most armies within one Grand Alliance don't synergize too well, so you are shooting yourself in the foot more often than not, assuming you want to combine those forces.
It also leads to the danger of having a whole bunch of unfinished projects lying about.
That said, the Start Collecting boxes are cheap enough, so, maybe pick two very different forces to get more of a feel for what kind of army you like? Stormcast, Ironjaws and Nurgle generally have comparable playstyles, so maybe that's not ideal.
>>
>>50957861
>>50957962

Cheers.

>generally have comparable playstyles

Holy crap. This was a question I've been wanting to ask. Is there a way to easily discern how each army plays, without having to read an entire book?
