To be honest, I am having a hard time keeping interest. The art is inspiring, and the action is pretty cool. But the story has gone off in a direction I am less interested in. Up to the point where they summon Susano, I found things very fascinating. Then the gods came in an everything becomes so super powered. A lot of times the more powerful the characters are, the less interesting things become.

Part of me wants to think there is a reference to Ghost in the Shell here or something. Man machine interface started including supernatural elements, it's a shame he never finished it.

I'm not sure exactly when he started working on Orion but at any rate, it develops ideas that were only vaguely touched upon in GitS in a much more convincing way.

The supernatural elements were already hinted at in the first GitS manga (in side-notes and in the dialog), but since the story wasn't explicitly supernatural, they felt somewhat nonsensical and Motoko just comes off as gullible when she buys into it.

And even in man-machine interface the "psychic division" doesn't seem obviously magical so it's still not very conclusive. Man-Machine Interface looks like shit anyway, has no memorable characters, its storytelling is awfully convoluted, and the stakes never seem really serious even when it's revealed that IT WAS ALIENS ALL ALONG.
So no, it's not a shame that he never finished it, it's a shame he started it instead of finishing Appleseed and Dominion Conflict.

In Orion it's obvious from the get-go that magic is real so Shirow has all the leeway he wants to expose mystical notions and he does a better job with it.

It was Studio 4C's participation to an animation competition/festival, and it didn't win.

So presumably they just chose to forget about it.

And it's not listed anywhere on their websites.

It was only 2 minutes long anyway.

But it's still really annoying to see other Shirow franchises get shitty adaptation after shitty adaptation, when Orion, which is by far his most spectacular manga, only got this.
