Sitting in new comfy chair, tea, livestream, Skitarii Rangers and radio. Nice.

No cat though, the one that used to live in my house stayed with the house when we moved. I go visit occasionally, she's always happy to see me.

Ordered the first of my Lord of War units today, a Knight Warden to finish my WarConvo. That will be a challenge, still quite new to painting.

So i am needing some advice. I wanted to build an alpha legion deamon prince armed woith the Hydra Blade. I was thinking of the following

On another note, the Dragon+ magazine released today revealed these:

That being said this is my first attempt at skin and a non crimson fist marine hopefully it's not too awful Yes i will be painting over the nipple ring in bronze or something and the forarm needs some shading
>>
>>50728544
if you can get away with the angle the best way to highlight is to have your brush hit the edge sideways, this way you won't be pressing down on the area and having wide lines.

>>
>>50725792
I like the overall effect, but I think it would be better without the Venerable Dread shinpads.
>>
>>50728544

Your paint needs to be thinner to go on as a small highlight properly, they're quite wide on the model for this reason.

I'd recommend you follow Duncan's style and actually feather the highlighting onto their carapaces, but if not then what >>50728833
says would help you: bring the side of the brush onto the edge and move sideways instead of using the brush like a pen or pencil.

https://youtu.be/PJaW_rQIS_s?t=7m19s If you start the video at that time Duncan is demonstrating this technique on the tail, and shortly after he demonstrates it on the carapace.

All that said, if you actually paint your entire army to that standard it will look miles better than many of the armies people regularly came with. Be proud, but work to improve.

>>
>>50729287
Warpaint and tattoos can be hard, if you use the colour you're trying to represent being warpaint it won't look like paint on the character, it will look like paint on the miniature (hard to explain, but I hope you get it?)

Try some miniature painting tattoo tutorials, the main lesson is to mix in some fleshtones to the colours you're trying to tattoo / paint on.

>>
>>50729147

thanks for the advice.

i actually tried to feather at the beginning/the first minis, but somehow it turned out weird.
i guess the brush was too thick, im going to buy a smaller one.
>>
>>50729652
So that dawnstone shared component makes the greys really very similar:
Assuming that your army's armour is all mechanicum / dawnstone, I'd have tried to find a more neutral grey for the hair

I'd have recommended finding a neutral grey for the hair, and assuming that your army is already mechanicum / dawnstone I'd look for a large shift in value to contrast the pelt. The studio scheme uses the blue-greys on the armour to contrast with more brown tones of grey elsewhere.

Some snow on the base would also help him stand out from it.
>>
>>50729784
What brush are you using? A GW one or something else?
>>
>>50729840
I get your point and artistically you are very right and I fully agree!

But these are my dudes. obviously can't be a successor, but more like a lost segment of a company. they are from a forest / mountainous covered planet, so mud and rocks on the base with no snow. i do add static grass in little matches like little moss patches or tufts of grass. the pelts are purposely similar to the armor as they are colouring their armor like the local fawna as a a shamanistic thing as well as slightly tactical thing.

i know red and gold on my hq and elites blows any camo ideas out the water, but it works for the normal troops etc. which are light grey shoulders and white trims.

In that case I wish you luck with Your Dudes, but you can stay in the same scheme while pushing your value contrasts further. Obviously it's somewhat unfair to grab your paintjob and stick it next to a studio painter, but it's just intended to illustrate what a difference it can make.

- 5 Sicarian Ruststalkers
- 2 Dragoons
- 2 Kastelans and Datasmith
- 6 Kataphrons
- 10 Inquisition Acolytes
- 3 Wyrdvane Psykers (My first metal models)
- Chimera

Going to be a trial to get a good chunk of this done by Christmas.

I'd go with an accent colour in there, but without yellow elsewhere... I almost wonder what they'd look like in that red/purple? It would bring that colour up into the top half of the mini, which would be nice.

I'd start with some very light grey and mix in some purple for the shades and more white for the highlights.
You could instead of using a light grey also use a very light blue instead. That would give you a colder look, but also more saturated.
>>
>>50730928

Go on what colours are they
>>
>>50732755
Are they metal? If so just rush right in and do your best, if it turns out not to your liking chuck it into some acetone and start fresh. At the very least, even if you do a poor job, in half a year when you've gotten much better you can strip them and try again.
>>
How do I do 'war paint' on a model? I want to give my Kommandos bright, garish camouflage, but it should look intentional - like the Ork applied something to his skin, not that I applied extra paint to the model.
>>
>>50732986
drybrushing to look like rough paint strokes
>>
>>50732986

Mix a little bit of the base skin color into the face paint color(s) then light drybrushing. You can use this color strategy for tattoos as well, just use less skin tone for war paint.
>>
>>50732986
I'd advise against drybrushing.
If anything at all I'd try overbrushing.
That means you don't have a lot of paint your brush, similarly to drybrushing, but it's wet.
You can try that.

If you are more confident in your painting abilities I'd say just paint the warpaint pattern on like you'd regularly and then go back with a very fine tipped brush and add cracks and irregularities to the lines to make it look like thick cracked paint.
Something you'd expect an ork to wear.

Heya. Sorry I've been at work all day. As another anon said, the chest plate and shoulder pads are from a Ven Dred that was trimmed up and used grey stuff as filler. The hammerhead is Deathwatch obviously and the arm and shaft are the Deathwing Knight Master's flail. The other arm is a Deathwing Powersword arm I trimmed, using the psicannon to hide details. I chopped it off at the gauntlet and replaced the Terminator Captain's sword arm gauntlet with it. The head is also from Deathwing Knights. You'll need to remove the breastplate of the captain bit carefully as to keep the knife on the belt. I had accidentally cut the eagle head of the knife pommel, but smoothed it out. Make sure to cut the arching part with the two lights from the breastplate and glue that like you normally would, it adds some extra detail and fills most of the gap between the Dread breastplate and the back of the Termie armor, just use epoxy for the rest of the gap. Hope that helps.

Looking a little too neat and orderly. I would suggest a few small accent plates, just rectangles that are intentionally placed diagonally instead of perfectly perpendicular, and crossing a joint to make it look like it was hammered on there to help hold two bigger plates together. GW sculpt a lot of "accent plates" like this on ork vehicles to make them look more interesting and ramshackle.

You can cut sprues into irregular girders, cut off the circular pieces and shave them down or gouge them and then just pile buttresses all over the place to hold up the walls, or just stack them somewhere on the base like they're being stored for later use.

Bendy straws also make great pipes such as would be attached to the sides of big fuel drums like that.

In general, just pile on more and more random stuff until it looks properly orky. Those plastic oil drums that used to come with battleforces would be perfect, since it's a fuel depot, but you could use old batteries as giant... batteries... bottle caps, christmas tree light bulbs, just wander around the house rooting through trash that hasn't gone into the can yet and see what you turn up. Also of course, scour your bits box (assuming you have bought enough orks over the years to build one up). You really can't add too much.

Also I can tell you from personal experience that you probably want a thicker/sturdier base, though you can just stick the existing base to a reinforcement at a later date or whenever you find one, even after painting. It will probably be a little fragile until you do, though.

One final thought, you can make a simpler ladder that you won't need to hotglue (assuming that's what you did) with one sprue-girder and steps made from plasticard rectangles (or other lengths of sprue). Just stick each step onto the broader edge of the sprue at the midpoint of the step. This can be done with elmers glue even.

getting into this whole thing and originally I considered having someone else paint my army but now I have changed my mind. If you want to save money; never buy from Citadel/Games Workshop.
If you play their games or love the minis then there is no real way around it, but for everything else besides the minis there are cheaper and equally good (and sometimes even better) alternatives on the market.
Tools especially are expensive if you buy from Citadel. Your local hardware store has similar tools for like 1/3 of the price
Basing materials (Sand, Texture paint, Grass etc) is cheaper elsewhere as well.

In my experience they replace properly miscast stuff (bubbles, detail missing or actually obscured by flash), but bent swords are your own lookout? I suppose I could raise an extra song and dance because muh limited edition...

I'm mostly buttmad about finecast, a lot of really cool sculpts are only available in a material that ranges from infuriating to clean to downright shoddy and I'd gladly pay more for them to be in FW resin, which I've had far less trouble with.

But the model isn't limited run, they intend on making and selling more.

Also, apparently Finecast no longer exists and nowadays they use the same resin as FW.
>>

>and I know if I email they'll just tell me to fuck off and bend it with water.
I once contacted GW because one of the plastic sprues had pieces missing in it. They asked me to send pictures. To proof that there wasn't something.
I mean think about it.

Anyway, I just said 'fuck it' and did it anyway, so they sent me a replacement sprue.

Still. Pretty damn weird.
>>
>>50739528
As someone sat with a FW mini and several recent stock GW resin minis in front of him, if they are using the same material they're not doing the same thing to it because the GW stuff is way softer and a completely different colour.

Color can vary from batch to batch, but FW resin is hard and brittle.
Fincecast is soft and rubbery.
One of the major 'features' of FC was that it was supposed to stand up well to frequent handling and gamin because of it's softness.

once, when a $100 gift card getting mailed was stolen. I was sending it to my cousin in another province and they watched the mail lady put it in the mailbox then come back three hours later, open their mailbox, and take the package out. They immediately called the PO, who called them back when the mail lady was back in the office and informed them that her position had been terminated.

Not him, but I've also sent a gift to Sweden and I'm frenchfag. I tried hard to find what I sent in the pic...

>>
>>50740246
>Don't they get busted?

Here the DHL has sub-companies who do the actual delivery and sometimes these have an additional company below them as well. And if you work for them you earn minimum wage (in fact they get even less because they only get paid for 8 hours of work a day, but if they have items left in their van after 8 hours they need to deliver them still.. so they end up working for free basically, and it wouldn't be surprise me if some stuff just gets thrown away because the guy wants to to home.) and delivery people get replaced and shuffled around all the time.

So if something disappears its easier to simply let the insurance (if it is protected by insurance in the first place) handle it instead of going after some delivery guy who might not even work there any longer.

I'd only recommend buying them if you're doing it to support your flgs- they're fine, and the large dry is actually surprisingly good, but you can get better at equivalent prices and equivalent brushes for cheaper.

I use brushes I buy from a local hobby shop/arts store. Generally 20/0 or 10/0, sometimes a plain 0.

I generally get them for about 5-6$ a brush, in Australian Dollarydoos.

I will NEVER use GW brushes. I had to use them one time when I attended one of those GW paint days where the GW shop owner (admittedly one of the better ones, doesn't follow half the policies they "enforce") gave us all a bunch of brushes and pains and let us go nuts on either a spehss muhreen or some random bretonnian guy.

The brush I was using, the most average sized one for a space marine, frayed after applying nothing more than a base coat and a first stage highlight.

Red Bolters are oldschool and look really good on Dark Angels and Ultramarines.

Red Armored marines should have a different color for their bolter, even if its just a close and not a direct match like on that pic.

YES. You don't have to paint like the space marine autists.
>"MY SPACE MARINES ARE CRIMSON FISTS WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR CHAPTER"
>"well you see I don't have a chapter I just wanted to paint red space marines-"

If you want to paint red and purple with green accents, go ahead and do it. Best bet is to find 2 colors you really like, and find colors that compliment them on the color wheel.
>>
>>50739675
The problem with finecast is that its soft and brittle. Totally worthless, so much easier to break. >>50739528

Nope, had some finecast minis last week direct from GW UK and its still the soft, fragile shit. It's nothing like FW resin.

If you like White/Blue, go for it. Its a good combination.

Blue/Yellow (or Gold) is also very good.

Or maybe the classic Dark Elves colors with lots of purple.

Hey anon do you have any pics from after you added the red to the wings but before you added the blue highlights? I'm wondering if you painted those first few rows of feathers completely red and then went back with the black/blue later or if you blended the red into the black on those last few rows before adding the blue color.

Either way, looking awesome so far and I can't wait to see it when it's done. Keep it up.
>>
>>50740788
>like the space marine autists.

we all know this isn't what happens in real life, but I will say that it seems better to me to paint your models within the context of the lore. having a generic "red guys" army just seems lazy, if a person is actually interested in 40k enough to buy and paint the models, then you'd think they'd have at least a minimal attachment to the lore. and that doesn't mean using an existing faction, you can make your own chapter etc but at least do *something*. if not the lore, then what drew them to 40k in the first place? I know there are WAAC fags who don't care about painting but that's not the point, even those guys started playing 40k for a reason. somewhere within the recesses of their mind, deep behind the cheetoh lust and aversion to lifting weights, is the seed that got them interested in the 40k world in the first place, otherwise why would they adopt such an obtuse system as part of their hobby? or they just saw the wargamers at the FLGS and decided they can fulfill their need to prove something there. whatever. (I hope the hyperbole here is not lost, I know not all competitive players are such massive faggots. angry rebuttals are not necessary)

and if you think your space marine player straw man is bad, play historicals. wargames in fictional milieus have the option to customize, that is a major advantage in my opinion. the "your dudes" philosophy does not exist in historicals. some serious triggering will ensue if you show up with blue german tanks.
>>
>>50740888
The autist at my LGS that threw a hissy fit when I was painting a bunch of spehss muhreens for a friend that wanted a color scheme and not a chapter.

>"WHAT DO YOU MEAN COLOR SCHEME"
>"WHAT CHAPTER ARE THEY"

My buddy just wanted bright red power armor on standard issue tac marines to see how my style of painting would go across an army.

Autist McSperglord said that they HAD to be blood angels, even though I insisted it was just a bunch of tac marines painted red.
>>
>>50741004
Ah, so you're space marine autist. What's up Steve?

In all seriousness, he WAS an autist. I wasn't playing the game, just trying out painting minis from a different wargame (I mostly paint Privateer Press minis). I couldn't give a dick about the lore at that stage, unless somebody was paying me to commission a squad of lore based marines.
