As someone who thought they looked awesome and bought the box of 60x 32mm base I don't suggest them. The cast quality is very low. I quite honestly have chinese recasts that are better quality than those bases.

Spend the money on buying materials to make your own sweet bases. I know it's more work but they will look so much better.

Would this be a good place to ask about casting my own minis and tokens? I'm gonna.

I'm curious about vacuum degassing. That's something I do with my resin once I mix the two parts, but before I pour it into a mold? For some reason I always thought you'd have the resin in the mold and them apply a vacuum to coax bubbles out of the nooks and crannies. Set me straight.

Decided to skew simple with the color scheme on the ARC-X1. Nuln oil layered with coal satin holographic paint every couple of layers gave the black a really cool dirty metallic reflectiveness that's really awesome when the things moving in light. Mixed balthazar, sepia and reikland fleshshade to achieve the bronzing on the engine components. Basic fluorescent glow purple paint for the engines and some soulstone blue gem color for the canopy and that's all she wrote! Has a bit of old newness that a virtually unused, mothballed prototype would probably have after sitting in a hanger most of its life.

Just wanted to say thanks to you guys for giving me some incredible work to look up to!

>>
>>50688595
oi mate,
you dont want to vacuum degass after the pour because the material rises and falls which leads to spills and general mess making. As for vacuum before pour and again after pour...I dunno. It goes into a pressure pot after the pour to make whatever bubble in there super tiny and undetectable.

so mix->vacuum*->pour->pressure pot**->profit

*must pull >= 29 inches of mercury, otherwise you're better off mixing carefully than using something that only pulls 28, less is moar harm than good

**I shouldn't have to tell you not to cheap out on this, the last thing you want is for it to spread shrapnel throughout your flat.

>>
>>50690536
Keep paint away from the metal part where the hairs start. Wash your brushes
>>
>>50690536
Yeah, what the other anon said.
If you got paint in the ferrule your brush is fucked.

So make sure to clean it out every time you use it and never let paint soak up that high into the brush.

When buying a new brush - at least in a good art store - there usually will be a pot of water and some paper.
If you can draw spirals with the brush without it losing it's tip it's a good one. The ones you should buy.

You're getting there but you're not there yet.

1. You should paint the largest surface colours first, in this case the armour, you painted this after you painted the spirit stone holders as you have paint on it, it doubles up with control your brush more.

2. You've gone for a dark base with a light layer, this is good but it adds depth but your application of your light layer is too sloppy and thick, it doesn't need to be so harsh.

3. Again, the light layer here has been added with a far too large brush and looks sloppy, compare it with the neat line of the bone to the right, control your brush by resting your hands against your desk / each other.

4. hair is ok, could lighten up the raised hair ridges with a very light dry brush of orange

5. spirit stone red has gone over the the broze holder, paint the larger surface first

6. Gun is flat black, consider very light grey dry brush

7. (not pictured) your spirit stones are all flat red, if you're not going to paint them in the traditional style consider using the GW technical paints

a. paint them stormhost silver
b. use the gem paint (spiritstone red etc) to make it look a little more effective than just red regular paint.

Good job, keep painting.
>>
>>50691163

Nice, I like the effect it's over the top and very 40k, good job.
>>
>>50687583
>>50687603

Looks great and it's painted well but it's too green.

1. Ribbed armour is green
2. cloth material is green
3. gloves are green.
4. Torso / shoulder guard is green.
5. Rebreather is green.
6. Mining light is green.

takes aware from the model, but otherwise I think its going to be a great project.

I need a bit help.

I paint the weapons of my tyranids in a very light green (think Living Green/Moot Green). Adding any kind of shade (I tried Athonian Camoshade and Biel-tan Green) darkens the weapon so much it takes away the "acidy/slimy" look I want to achieve.

Any advice to add detail without losing the desired effect?
>>
>>50691776
nuln oil gloss, or maybe your preferred wash and then a coat of 'ardcoat? or maybe keep the blunt edge a dark colour and have it bright along the sharp edge?
>>
>>50691776
Don't paint green, paint light yellow, bone or white and then apply the green wash.

It will then turn them a light green from their source colour.

Test on sprue to see what works best first.

You put a colour wash over the same colour and yes, it will just darken it.

No worries. Army painter has got some pretty decent stuff. Some of their paints can be hit-or-miss in quality, but that might have been bad luck on my part. I got some of their paint when I started out and they were a relatively new company, so they might've gotten better at mixing the paint pigments.

No problem Anon.

Just keep in mind that GW, while not bad at all, just happens to be the most expensive company for literally everything they sell.

I'm trying to paint a mini in a nice bone colour, so I laid down a basecoat of a medium brown all over (over a black primer), then tried putting on multiple thin layers of bone, but I'm up to about layer 5 or 6 and I just can't achieve a solid colour, plus I swear I can make out the brush strokes in the paint.

Please tell me there's something obvious that I'm missing here that'll make it work.
>>
>>50688595
Putting it in a pressure chamber works better. If you get resin under 50psi any bubbles will be so small that you just wont notice them after a base coat. There are plenty of issues using a pressure chamber such as the mold needs to be made under the same pressure so it doesn't collapse as well as the inherent danger of pressure chambers and getting put on watch lists if you start googling pressure cookers.

>>
>>50692031
I'll give it a shot with a white basecoat, but the main issue is that I just can't seem to get the bone colour to apply as nicely as Dunc has it there.

Did I maybe just get a poor paint for the job? I'm using some Army Painter paints and I've heard that their quality can be a bit unreliable.
>>
>>50691968
unfortunately i got mantic skeletons and they got so much more armour but they are more fluffy thx to that
>>
>>50692080

More likely a problem with paint consistency. In my experience Army Painter is fine. Unless they are really really old and poorly stored when they can go a bit chalky, but that doesn't sound like thats the case here.

You're probably thinning it wrong or something. Maybe try a thinning medium, I find it a lot easier to manage than water.
>>
>>50692149
Well, I was using a wet palette because I like to paint on and off, and thinning with water in addition to that, so I might have just been thinning far too much accidentally.

I'll give it a shot with a dry palette, and if that doesn't work I'll try some thinning medium. Thanks anon!

Just getting back on the painting horse. Feeling like a true novice/noob. I have a massive amount of minis (old friend basically gave me all his when he moved).

I'm kind of at a loss as to where/how to start back up - kind of overwhelming. Are there any particularly forgiving troop types I can start back up on?

I'm aware that I can just strip them back down if I massively chaunce 'em, which is good I guess. I have 5 Necromunda gangs (plus Spyrers), Orks, CSM, SoB and a shit ton of Eldar.
>>
>>50688848
Then have the model duel-wield a combi-plasma and a normal flamer? If you model it as a combi-flam-plas then it will just be confusing as shit WYSIWYG-wise.

Try starting with model wielding a flamer and GS a strap for a combi-plasma,

The question that is off-topic but needs asking is why the hell do you have a model with a combi-plasma and a flamer?
>>
>>50692713
Do you play / will you be playing?

If so I'd focus on making a 500 point or so list from them and work on painting that. Then pick out another 500 points etc. etc. Commit yourself to only fielding painted models.
>>
Difference between Vallejo Game Colour and Vallejo Model Colour?
>>
>>50692722

SoB command squads have access to ALL the weapons. You can give them 2 combi, 2 power weapons, combi+PW, Combi/PW+special/heavy, ect, and you have five models with which to do it.

I choose to go with 4 models with a combi-plasma and a flamer, a Hospitaliar, and an immolator because it comes out to be 200pts even. If I wanted to, I could give them heavy flamers instead, but that's another 20 points. Get out of immolator, shoot the plasma, then either overwatch with the flamers or use them and assault with the attached canoness wielding an Evicerator.

Anyway, more on topic, I was thinking using the flamer model as the base, too.
>>
>>50692765
Game colour apparently is less easy to rub off. Also it's a bit glossier than model colour in my experience as well, a lot closer to gw paints.

From an artistic standpoint. The lights are everywhere, usually, when there is a light source, highlights are done in the general direction of the light hitting the object, you instead highlighted her dress like light is coming from all directions although the recesses aren't lighted at all so it makes no sense. So, learn how light hits objects and you'll be better at highlighting objects.

Second, I guess this depends on style so you might as well ignore this one if you did it on purpose, but you have to blend and lose the line difference between colours. Some styles use it to make it look cartoony so that's cool, if you're going realistic, lose the lines and blend the colours.

Third, highlights and shadows aren't represented by a lighter or darker shade of the base colour, usually it shifts both the colour and the shade of it. For example, if you're doing a base red miniature, the highlights aren't pink (a lighter red) you have to desaturate the base colour and shift it a bit towards orange, same goes for shadows, they aren't just a darker red, the colour shifts towards a violet tone and a darker shade of it as well. So, colour theory, go for it, it's fun and helpful.

I would give advice on the face but I don't know jack shit about anatomy and how to make a character look appealing therefore I won't just shit an opinion out of my ass.

Yes, this dreadnought is a Recast. Although there's nothing inherently wrong with it's shoulderpad that either needs fixing, or can't be removed. It's the Raven Guard Dreadnought, that shoulderpad is actually supposed to look fucked up. They're essentially deep gouges that the dreadnought suffered fighting on Istvaan V, which the raven guard then carve into artwork. I'm not sure if you've seen what a real RG contemptor looks like.

It's right shoulderpad though is going to be touched up with weathering. It's nothing that I couldn't fix with some typhus corrosion and pencil lead.

Newbie here. I've ordered some daemonettes and am thinking about how to paint them. I want a pale skin color with a slightly pinkish sheen. What would you recommend? Painting them them with pale flesh tones and giving it a gentle wash with druchii violet?
>>
>>50700457
Your method would give good results! Doing the initial skin tones with rakarth flesh and then applying the wash would look great. It's the way I did my kroot, but I used a dark green wash instead.
>>
>>50700184
>>50700201

Those hazard stripes are gorgeous, but the metal could really use another wash + highlight/drybrush.

Some of the highlighting on the blue could also be cleaned up or strengthened in places, it's a little patchy as it is, though that could just be your camera and/or light source dimming them.

Here is my first warmachine troll.

I like the way he turned out, but what are some things I can improve on.

I just started painting tiny plastic dudes, and I don't really know any techniques outside of base coating, shading, then dry brushing. How can I make it so the light blue skin doesn't look like a single flat color?

i also did a dark blue on the skin but he has a huge gut so there isnt much definition from shading alone, and I don't really know how to do that.

I also really want to do a free hand tartan design for the fabric but I want to practice on something else first.

With the new Imperial Agents codex coming out, I have all the more reason to make my own inquisitor. I have never really kitbashed though.

What kits do y'all think would be a good starting point for making a lightly armored inquisitor and a terminator armored inquisitor? What other bits should I start trying to round up?

Thanks for any help.

you sir may use trips.
or do some sort of recap, please.
I really would like to see it unfold
>>
>>50705155
Kitbashing is pretty simple, mix bits and otherise fill seams with greenstuff.

Male or female?

How stickler are you about height scale? (for example, wanting your human inquisitor shorter than a 7-8 foot tall space marine in powerarmor)

How lightly armored? Flack is 5+, Carapase is 4+, powerarmor is 3+.

Terminator armor there are loads to choose from, from the standard, something like grey knights, old shit from 30k, you can even take a WHFB/AoS Warrior of Chaos or Sigmarine knight armors, remove chaos/sigmar details, and otherwise tack shit onto that.
>>
>>50696650
Do a soft red glow effect for the eyes. Paint the whole eye red, wash it with watered down nuln oil, then do a bit of brighter red along the middle or any raised part of the eye, and then around the edges of the eye do a very watered down thin layer for the glow.
That armor looks outstanding though, how'd you do it?
>>
>>50705288
>>50705155
Adding on, you may not want to start assembling your model until the codex releases and gets uploaded in a few days, so you don't make something then find it invalidated.

>>
>>50705332
On top of your current patches, drybrush some gunmetal, then drybrush some mixture of brown, red, and gunmetal or silver for a redish rust.

This will make your current spots look more "organic" like rust, instead of looking like some sprays from an airbrush.

>>50705288

Male.
Slight stickler for scale, but I would easily get over it to have a visually striking model.
By lightly armored, I meant more that I envision an inquisitor going into combat in a bit more than flowing robes or clothing like pic related. So, I'd say either carapace or power armor. I haven't seen many power armored inquisitor models though.
>>
>>50705288
>>50705564

However, I would definitely say that the pictured model is a great job of incorporating small bits for great detail.
>>
>>50705564
Power armor is as easily represented by "full suit of armor, maybe a backpack." Space Marines power armor is huge because they are huge, so you can instead use pretty much any medieval armor you want to represent power armor easily. (plenty to pick from in WHFB/AoS models, for certain)

For carapase armor, you're generally good with a breastplate, pauldrons, and maybe some boots/gauntlets. Scions are basically this, and you can easily make a pretty nice inquisitor using the commander parts from the scion kit.

There are also all kinds of options within thirdparty as well.

Be thankful you aren't putting yourself through sculpting-hell with poofy dresses and powerarmor, like I am with pic related.
I already fucked up the feet of my legs base and have to wait to get replacements.
>>
>>50705668

Thanks for the advice.

If you'd rather not buy a ton of kits to find parts you want, you can basically buy all 40k and WHFB/AoS bits through BitzBox.co.uk.

Camera is RIP and 3ds is not good for photos of minis, so even if I was far enough to take pictures I couldn't, sorry.

Her head is kitbashed from Kingdom Death: Monster parts, though I need to practice sculpting glasses at that small of scale. Torso base is a deldar kabalite with shoulderpads and other details removed. Legs were an older set of kabalite legs, the smooth ones. From there, it's a matter of scupting a bunch. She's otherwise going to have a baselard for her forcesword, and wargear represented by different base-attached drones.
>>
>>50705155
Take whatever model you like. That's the beauty of it.
Doesn't matter if it's a Inquisition Crusader, regimental advisor for the IG, a grunt, a witchhunter from WHFB or even a mini from a different company.
If you slap an inquisition logo onto him/her somewhere you're good to go.

>>
>>50705888
The arm looks tacked on with no attempt to make it look like it belongs.

You'd need to shave down the arms shoulder and carve into the torso's left shoulder to begin to make it look like har arm is mutated and not like she's wearing part of a shoddy Hulk cosplay fitted for someone else.

I think you just need to use greenstuff or something to make the arm look like a part of her. She's so slender and elegant in the rest of her pose that the arm looks out of place. Warp half her face and that shoulder or something to get it all together.
>>
>>50705994
To be honest, you'll be better off using an arm not as large as her entire body. Even Nightmare at his most lopsized wasn't that oversized with his arm.
