Huh... so we're still doing this. Count me in! I um... may have gotten bored in the absence of this thread and started the Friendly Virtual Gaming Thread, during which I had an epiphany: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon TRPG. Not original by any means, except that we use the Blade of the Iron Throne's system for it, essentially a d12 dicepool system, but with a few extra mechanics that make combat flavorful, fun and roleplay centric, unlike your standard d10 dicepool system.

I agree it's not great from a design perspective, but I really do think our priority should be lowering the barrier to entry. That means light, simple rules and a dice setup that can be scrounged up from an average-sized boardgame collection

Dice isn't a huge issue because there are so many dice generators out there and I don't see this getting played irl anytime soon. Also, don't feel the need to baby /vp/ posters. They deal with a whole bunch of interwoven mathematical systems on the regular. The trick would be to ensure the gameplay is slick and streamlined so that it doesn't take forever. Slow, plodding gameplay in a dungeon crawler is pen and paper death.

Ok, so here's the deal. I can work the system, Skill checks, combat, templates to Stat Pokémon, everything needed to actually play the game. What I can't do is write up the "How to roleplay as Pokémon/How to GM this game, and All the fluff to it. Nor can I stat over 700 individual Pokémon. I once named my d12 'River', as in River Tam. Because like Serenity's resident shiny hot, petite psychic asskicking waif, d12s are awesome.

However, for sheer approachability, d6s are better. Heck, Rock-Paper-Scissors would probably be best since that's the basic mechanic behind Pokemon battles. I humbly recommend introducing /vp/ to a game of Lasers & Feelings, where the GM can basically run the TOS episode with Tribbles in them, except replace the lil' furballs that mate and multiply like rabbits on viagra with Pokemon that mate and multiply like rabbits on viagra. Now they really need to catch 'em all!. POKEMON IN SPACE!!! Uses about 3-4 d6s, this one.

So, if anyone has been keeping up with SunMoon, there's a new pokememe. This one seems oddly familiar... and reminded me of our favorite psychopomp grim reaper. We should show /vp/ this at some point.

What this means is that it will be rather easy to assign stats, and determine which Pokémon are playable:

Any Pokémon with a base stat total 340 or less is considered a usable option for a Player Character. Statting them is a matter of rounding each stat to the nearest ten, then dividing by 10.

Then there's cultures, skills, proficiencies, and Assets, which will give more character detail and prevent them from feeling too samey. Cultures can easily be treated as Natures, and function in about the same manner.

Attack rolls function as Attribute + Weapon Proficiency, which we can treat in the form of moves as Attribute + dicepool derived from the move's accuracy stat. Moves such as Swift will be treated as Attribute + 1-2 auto-successes, etc.

Damage is based on a rating if the weapon used, with successes from the attack roll adding to it, then half the relevant weapon attack.In other words, damage rolls will look something like:

Successes + Move Power + Modifier from Attack/Sp. Attack, all of which is easily converted from the existing game stats.

So, the real trouble will be simplifying combat mechanics, such as stances and lcational damage, making them optional rules to make the game more fun.

Successes are always 7 or above, or 50% chance of success, so theoretically I could translate that to d6 with a target number of 4, but I'm going to wait until I have a good chance to review the system as a whole and see if anything is lost in such a conversion.

Both /vp/ and /his/ asked us out, and, continuing the semi-tradition of the /tg/ harem, we said yes to both. This year we've had a bit of a focus on games with other boards. We said yes by challenging /vp/ to a Match in Pokémon Showdown. there was a lot of hype. Unfortunately both boards have been silent since the release of Sun and Moon, and we can't post on their boards without a good reason, which is why I'm simultaneously working on an MTG duel decks to challenge them to, and working on a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon RPG.
