2920 mentions a few students he had when he was a teacher at Artaeum. Some of them could probably still be around.

Maybe atleast one of the Psijic Order members you meet in Skyrim was a former student of Sotha Sil?

Yeah, it was written by Carlovac Townway sometime in the Third Era. He's a famous Breton historian turned author.
He's a contemporary of Waughin Jarth (Dance in Fire) and Baloth-Kul (The Horror at Castle Xyr).

Ted Peterson is the man behind all the characters and their books, as well as a lot more. Very important developer.
>>
>>50292757
Historical fiction. The premise, the events and their outcome are historical (as historical as things concerning the First Era can be), but with plenty of author-induced fluff.

They worship Hircine. It would not even remotely surprise me if worshipers of the father of lycanthropes and god of the hunt ate people they killed.

Also they're backwards savages.
>>
>>50292757
It is historical fiction, in that all the events and circumstances surrounding the characters in the book are likely true, it's just that the interactions and some personalities of characters are dramatizations and likely not accurate.

What little additions could Skyrim have used for a bit more flavor? Without derailing in complaining or pointing fingers; I can understand Bethesda not doing everything the way we want it to

>more Nordic mysticism with ancient rituals, animal sacrifices, shamans, worship of the old Nordic pantheon, a few living Dragon cultists here and there
>more hermits living in mountains, more isolated villages, Skyrim is a bit too urbanized/cosmopolitan
>sky whales
>more Nords actually wearing fur instead of cotton/linen/wool (not an expert of fabrics) like Imperials do
>more Nords casually walking around with an axe in their holster just like redneck Americans in open carry areas
>more megafauna
>Ancient Snow Elf ruins
>a Merethic era city (like Saarthal and Bromjunaar) still inhabited
>Direnni ruins in the Reach
>settlements of non-savage Reachmen with their own architecture (pic related)
>less anti-magic autism, Nords are supposed to be masters of frost magic
>>
>>50294582
Skyrim completely missed out on the Nords tribal aspect.
That is in my opinion its biggest mistake.
>>
Is there an elaborate explanation for the over sized objects in the Imperial Palace basement?
>>
>>50294582
Atmoran descended Nordic totemism and religious practices as described in the original planning documents.

More painted cows.

Wasabi.

Clever-men.

Nords in the farthest northern areas who walk around naked and still don't really know what the Empire is.

Religion and superstition were lacking in the game.
I'm playing morrowind for the first time and every nord blames their problems on witches and snow elves.

The piece of the design doc that Kirkbride showed was good, especially with the Alduin ritual.
The ruins and temples just felt like locations to put bandit camps, they didn't feel like an in-universe thing.
They felt like a place for bandits to fight and maybe a quest to find some object in a tomb filled with draugr and a big chest full of leveled loot at the end.

Also people interacting in taverns. Why have bards when nobody's going to drunkenly sing along?
>>
Here's one thing that was good in Skyrim: the design of the dragon cult barrows.

Pretty much everything that translated from the excellent concept art is nice.

More focus on prominent families like the Graymanes and Battlebornes, not always so blatant as every city having a Stormcloak/Imperial family, but something

And, more chainmail. The guard and stormcloak outfits nearly do it, and look good, but there's still not enough chainmail.

Ascetic Nords walking around in the snow in loin clothes and shouting, sometimes appearing in High Hrothgar

Onmund did somewhat touch on why nords are more touchy with magic nowadays. He says it has to do with a combination of:existing preference for physical weapons, superstition/fear left from the oblivion crisis and the Great War with the elves (who love their fucking magic), and in winterhold the great collapse adds to it.
It's by no means a perfect explanation of every aspect, but to some extent it explains a good chunk of everyone's issue with it. Granted, 200 years is a long time to still be fearful about something like that but whatever.

I like the Khajiiti pantheon, so Azurah is probably my favourite.
Fadomai arguably counts, though she's dead.
Baan Dar is pretty cool, and Riddle'Thar to a lesser extent.

Merid Who Held the Whole of the Blackblock Under Her Hood is another favourite, and a few cool Magne-Ge deities are Wode-Rub, Swath, Clan Box, Mnethm and Phophec.

The HoonDing is pretty boss, as is Diagna, who is one of his avatars-become-deity. Leki, Sai and Ebonarm are also cool. Probably my second favourite set of weird gods after the Khajiiti one, though these are more removed from other deities.

And lastly, just to be super obscure, I'm going to give a honourable mention to Ephen.
I want to play a paladin to Ephen and just spend the majority of my time being really confused as to what my god is actually all about, but never admitting my doubts to anyone.

How would one go about playing a Knight of the Imperial Dragon from a lore perspective? Are they an actual order of knights with their own autonomy from the legion or just a high ranking soldier? I know Morrowind treats them as just a high rank within the legion and from what I can remember they're absent from Oblivion and Skyrim.

>>
>>50303276
When you die, your soul goes to the dreamsleeve to be reborn. Most likely there's a set populace of people that can exist at any time, but we'll never know because the souls go every which way towards every race, excluding the Argonians with their weird souls that don't operate like the rest of the world's.

I think the souls also include the people on the other continents, so until we map out every life ever, we'll probably continue to never know the max number people that can exist.

I'm curious about something.

Is there any lore behind the martial arts of TES?

All i ever found was that Khajeet are supposedly the best at it and the Imperials being a close second.
Oh and the novitiates of the Ancestor Moth cult being taught how to fight barehanded.
>>
>>50304994
>"The unarmed, unarmored martial arts traditions of the Marshmerrow, Salt Rice, and Golden Reed societies of the Dissident Priest, patterned on the 'Rain-of-Sand' fighting styles of Elsweyr, are slow to be adopted in the Empire, associated as they are with the ascetic renunciation of worldly wealth and material goods, and the rigid disciplines and mystical philosophies so alien to the Impieral West."
>"Monks dedicated to the ascetic philosophies of Elsweyr have long cultivated the unarmored martial arts traditions called the 'Rain-of-Sand' fighting styles. The Mages Guild and other societies have had some success adapting these styles for self-defense training of wizards and other armor-averse vocations. Students of the unarmored styles wear little to no armor, and count on evasion or deflection to avoid injury."

>The Temple of Two-Moons Dance in Torval has for many hundreds of years been the finest training ground in all Tamriel for warriors of foot and fist. The masters teach students of all ages from all parts of the Empire the most ancient techniques and the most modern variations, and many a former pupil has graduated to great fame.

>MK: There’s blades in her [Shonni-Et’s] hair and Sed-Yenna, the older sister, is doing all this wuxia, hardass stuff, cracking plate armor with knee hollows. His head. “These fuckers!” One chick wuxia with soft style...

What about Daggerfall? Because that game pretty fucking thoroughly established what the area around the Iliac bay is like.
I'd much rather they don't ever touch High Rock or Hammerfell again since there's really no possible way they could ever replicate a map as massive as the one in Daggerfall in a modern game. At least not without finally dropping gamebryo and building an engine actually suited for those giant immersive open worlds that Bethesda keep fucking struggling to make.

As of Skyrim, things he writes still make it directly into the games even when he isn't directly contracted by them, like he was Oblivion and KotN.

He's personally friends with people that still do work there full-time as well, like Kurt.

I've always found it odd how there's two cities in northeastern High Rock. I don't think it's a very pleasant or fertile area where you can afford to have a high population density. It mostly makes sense of the Iliac Bay to be densely populated. People of Jehanna would be big Talos fans.

My point is that ESO isn't really as bad as the rest of the games, lorewise. I mean, at least they're trying. I can't speak for the writing, and I've never played it, but we're talking about a game in the same franchise as Oblivion. And I don't even mind Oblivion.

There really isn't a point. Maybe the time travel stuff sucks, but there are enough actually interesting things (read: things MK wrote a decade ago), or so I've heard, to make up for it.

For those who didn't see my post last thread. The UESRPG is rolling again, this time with the largest team we've ever had. I'm super excited about where we're headed.

I've restructured our online presence somewhat, but basically all that matters is that we have a nice google doc with all our links (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pTgTN2aJUoY95JtquowagfUJLL7tCQYhzJKcCAcbvio/edit?usp=sharing) and a shiny new discord server for design and game finding purposes (https://discord.gg/p3CMn2P). I won't be updating the old blog anymore, and the IRC is dead, but our subreddit still exists for those who want to use it. If someone makes a new OP in the next day or so, please replace the mediafire and IRC links with these news ones if possible.

If you're interested in helping out, or just want to hang out, drop by our discord server and say hi. And once again, thanks for being patient with us!

Just my two septims. But are you sure you wouldn't rather just check out the pages tagged as "online" on uesp or something.

Watching a let's play of an MMO sounds even more depressing and soul crushingly boring as actually playing trough one.
>>
>>50313350
Its really not P2W from what I've experienced. You can buy mounts and potions but they're not better than something a player could make. That being said, it did get boring, and the lore was generally average. Nothing fantastic. You're a dude who got his soul stolen by Molag Bal, then you help some chick who's supposedly half giant speshul snowflake, but her dad's just a fucking tall nord. Then you help Jagar Tharn's great x10 grandfather, who's actually a fairly entertaining character, a weeaboo redguard, and some dude who trusted Mannimarco even though he's a cunt. Lots of quests are given by ghosts which annoys me. There are constant time-travel bits. Maormer appear in the Summerset Isles, and their boats are just normal boats and not made out of giant sea creatures. Gonna hop into it again once my friend downloads it, I hear the new update is fun. Can't speak for the DLC but I hear it's actually good. Like >>50313502 said, don't watch someone play an MMO. You'll want to end your life more than you already want to.

So, started playing TESO as a Breton Sorcerer and planning to RP, and I've always wondered; where exactly do magic users, particularly full-on magic users, stand in society?

I know cultures like the Redguard, Orsimer, and Nords tend to look down on the use of magic, but in other cultures, what status do they have? Are they any different than the common citizen? Capable of inheriting noble titles or fighting in the military?
>>
>>50314156
Yeah, they're totally normal. Or, at least, as normal as they want to be. Someone can seclude themselves in a tower and collect old books and not be a mage too.

It's worth noting that even cultures that seems like theur have a distrust of magic have a traditional magical culture of their own, it's just that they distrust the magic of other cultures. Nords have clever-men and the Thu'um, Redguards have the Yoku-hi, western magic.
>>
>>50314156
Imperial Battlemages are a huge thing and are looked very well upon. Anyone with a good amount of magic talent who enters the Legion is immediately tried to be turned into one.

In High Rock you've got rogue sorcerers who rule over villages and towns, and the nobility and powerful mages kind of go hand-in-hand. Also crazy hedge mages.

Presumably those with magical talent in the Summerset Isles, in the eras of the Aldmeri Dominion, are quickly located and indoctrinated. Otherwise viewed as very useful and respectable enough.

Shit man, Skyrim could have been great but they just didn't get the Nords right in that game. They were too damn similar to Imperials in my opinion. Only ingame reason I can see as off why is that Skyrim has been in the empire so long that they have become more cosmopolitan like the imperial heartland. But Skyrims biggest failure was the lack of scope, skyrim just feels small, the cities are not even cities they are towns with like 20ish people in it, Its fucking sad! The cities of Skyrim was supposed to be bastions of Nordic life in a harsh enviroment, but all that we see are about 20 people often less just... So small!

So far we know that Crystal like Law got messed up by the Oblivion Crisis, the metaphysical tower of the khajiit got destroyed when the thalmor assassinated the Mane and therefor the deep connection to their own self as a people which is why I think they blindly believed the thalmor when the moons came back, Ada-Mantia is THE tower and is probably still strong but weakened by the loss of other towers, the giant moving tree of Valenwood is still up in the air as to its status, White Gold may or may not be working its kinda hard to tell, we don't know if Argonia has a Tower but its a safe bet if they do its untouched, Red Mountain is deactivated but still feels the effects of The Heart of Lorkhan via Heart Stones. And of course the one in Yokunda got atomically cut in half and no one but the Redguards know why it.

Snow Throat's Stone may or may not be like a opposite of the metaphysical khajiit tower but instead of the Mane(a single but very important khajiit who remembers all the events ever to transpire to the khajiit race and all of their Love and importance of Self/Me) its the entirety of the Nord peoples who are Snow Throats Stone, that or Broken Not World Eating But World Conquer Alduin and well....
Walking Brass is basically a Tower that Is and Is Not, and wants to break the Wheel to see how It Turns but its everywhere and nowhere still on Red Mountain fighting, still in Daggerfall fighting for several different factions forever broken but also not.

So in my opinion I'd say about 3 or 4 towers are offline/not working properly.

Now, or before The Fall?
>>
>>50317781
>>50318674
This is important, though: the main goal of the Thalmor is not to destroy the towers, though it may be incidental to their cause. Additionally, more Towers have been deactivated by the actions of the player than the Thalmor, at least as far as we know.

The Stone of Snow-Throat, the cave, is most likely the same cave that Shor enters to meet with Shor; that is, Plato's allegory of the cave.

Also, Argonia probably different have a Tower.
>>

The Adamantine tower still stands tall, by all acounts

The White Gold tower also stands, but as you said maybe during the year long occupation some Thalmor fuckery happened there which destroyed the metaphysical part of the tower while leaving the physical tower intact

Also, Im wondering a thing
Why would the elves build many of the towers in the first place?
Sure most elves dont agree with the Thalmor ideas but, what was there to gain for the Dirrenni, the Aldmer or the Alyeids to build their towers?

The whole point of the Towers, broadly, is that the Mer were trying to copy what they saw at Ada-Mantia and ascend, or drachocrystallize, back into their et'Ada forms. That's why only Mer build them. Of course, different factions of Mer had different ideology and theory, and that's where all the different cultures of Mer, and their Towers, came from.

Chim-El Adabal was destroyed, deactivating White-Gold Tower.
>Sure most elves dont agree with the Thalmor ideas but, what was there to gain for the Dirrenni, the Aldmer or the Alyeids to build their towers
Well first off the Direnni didn't build a Tower well they did actually build the livable 'tower' portions, just not THE tower. Adamantia is a divine object, and its purpose was to make sure the world wouldn't die after the departure of the gods.
The Towers of the Mer are both literal and metaphorical manifestation of their own culture, in other words how they perceive and spread their own view of the world.
The many different towers came out of the destruction of the Aldmeris, or in other words unified Elven thought. All these new cultures had their own views on the world and creation and so were made new towers.

>I see nothing but conflicting information
Because we haven't reached a commonly accepted answer yet. We don't really know.
>>
>>50319322
Red Mountain and Snow-Throat are different from the Towers constructed by Mer, in that they were both formed as a side product of the creation of Mundus. They can still possibly be appropriated by the cultures that inhabit the area around them, which is how the Nords were able to take it from the Falmer.

I'd say that the two most important Towers are Red Mountain and Ada-Mantia. Red Mountain, time, Lorkhan, Ada-Mantia, space, Akatosh. This is where things get weird, but that's a different story.

>>50319328
Yes, the Throat of the World is Snow-Throat. The Stone is the cave, which, to quote an earlier post,
>is most likely the same cave that Shor enters to meet with Shor; that is, Plato's allegory of the cave.

I'm pretty sure MK said this was right.

Because Lorkhan (Shor) coming to his realization and forming Mundus and the whole conflict that arose because of it is explicitly Plato's allegory of the cave.

The Khajiit tower is just speculation by people who say the Khajiit are Mer.
The Maormer, to our knowledge do not have a Tower.

Insectoid, certainly, with its membranous sails and rugged chitin hull, but she had seen similar if not identical seacraft in Morrowind. No, if not for the flag which was markedly alien, she would not have picked out the ship from others in the harbor. As the salty mist ballooned around her, she held out her hand in welcome to the visitors from another island empire.

There's no actual canon definition of what that is, and based on how the hist control the infusing-into-life of argonian souls, it may just be that argonians believe each life they live as a phase itself, before they're reincarnated by the host as someone new.

ctrl + f tower

But I'll copy and paste it for you.

>>
Why is every race of mer jerks?
>>
>>50325871
they believe they are descended from gods
>>
>>50325803
>The whole point of the Towers, broadly, is that the Mer were trying to copy what they saw at Ada-Mantia and ascend, or drachocrystallize
Nu-Mantia literally states that the purpose of White-Gold wasn't dracocrysalis, that dracorysalis was a specifically Altmer concept.
We also happen to have no idea what dracocrysalis actually is beyond a process to "keeping elder magic bound before it could change into something lesser" and no reddit theories are going to change that.
>>
>>50325908
and Men believe they can become gods, is that why the races of men are superior?
>>
>>50325871
Literally everyone in the TES universe is a jerk.

Elves are just less obvious about it.
>>
>>50325938
Yes, I know. I didn't feel like writing all of that originally, but that was what I was alluding to with the bit about theory. White-Gold is more of a large scale model of the Aurbis.

>[Auri-El] then ascended to heaven in full observance of his followers so that they might learn the steps needed to escape the mortal plane.

This is probably a description of dracochrysalis.
>>
>>50326022
>>50325964
If it is one thing Skyrim proves, its that men are just as much stuck up cunts as Elves
Only the Beast races and the Orcs (which are Mer, but whatever), but its hard being a stuck up cunt if everyone treats you like gypsies
>>
>>50326103
>This is probably a description of dracochrysalis
Why?
There is literally nothing that implies dracochrysalis has anything to do with ascension.
>>
>>50326373
1. Dracochrysalis has to do with Aldmer/Altmer Tower theory
2. Mer build Towers in imitation of the Divine
3. Auri-El, the Aldmer's greatest and best example, ascended and now they try to follow his example

So the Aldmer see Auri-El ascend, and think, "we'd like to do that." So they build Crystal-Like-Law, which is linked to dracochrysalis, and seems like it's describing climbing the subgradients. It's pretty simple.
>>
>>50326149
>Only the Beast races and the Orcs (which are Mer, but whatever), but its hard being a stuck up cunt if everyone treats you like gypsies
To be fair, in their cases, we haven't really been to their homelands. At least, not large enough to get a good grasp on the population.

But generally, one thing I do enjoy about Elder Scrolls is how they handle the races. The archetypes of their people is not the rule by which they're written. Some Altmer are holier-than-thou dicks, but you also have commoner Altmer who just sell their goods. Nords glorify warriors, but there are plenty of farmers and traders.

It's something TES does well that some others are terrible at (Star Wars, as much as I love it, is REALLY bad when it comes to cultural stereotypes being the rule).
>>

Fuckin' love that picture.
>>
>>50324834
>>50324882
>>50325353
That's more divine than magical.
>>50325477
I'm less inclined to belive this as diseases are categorized separately than curses, and treated differently. For example, how Restore and Dispell are more for curses where as Cure Disease is used for diaease. Although I'd imagine that causing a disease through magic is a type of curse.

>>50327662

>>
>>50327695
Would have been an opportunity for an interesting DLC which has two branching paths for whichever side of the Civil War you sided with... and actually gives it significance. But, because games aren't infinite, I'd limit the options to Ulfric or Balgruuf (for Stormcloaks) and Elisif or Balgruuf (for Imperials) with maybe a "failure" option of Thongvor Silverblood or Maven Black-Briar respectively.

Stormcloak-Ulfric
>Brow-beat or impress any none-too-loyal Jarls
>Kidnap Elisif for a forced marriage to Ulfric
>Defeat Thongvor Silverblood in contest for Kingsmoot

Stormcloak-Balgruuf
>Betray Ulfric and release Balgruuf from his dungeons
>Gather support from none-too-loyal jarls
>Surprise appearance at Kingsmoot to beat Ulfric

Legion-Elisif
>Similar to Ulfric, but no marriage, obviously, and sub Maven for Thongvor.

Legion-Balgruuf
>Betray the Empire and convince Balgruuf to put his name at the Kingsmoot
>Win the loyalty of none-too-loyal jarls (like the seer woman in Morthal) by pointing out Balgruuf was the only Jarl taking the dragons seriously
>Defeat Imperials at the Kingsmoot.
>>
>>50327695
At the risk of memeing, the Civil War is every bit as disappointing as the election was. You can choose between an egocentric xenophobic demagogue, or an inexperienced snake; but all we wanted was the cool guy who was actually concerned about the dragons and is completely fine with Talos worship.

To be fair, the Civil war only decides on which faction controls skyrim as a whole, though a Stormcloak skyrim would elect Ulfric to high King most probably. An Imperial Skyrim is a much more fluid situation, with the LDB having the ear of every Jarl due to being the LDB on top of being a thane of every hold.

I know that Dragons can practice a wide array of magic through their shouts (even necromancy), but enchanting? How does that even work? Can they shout to imbue a mask with special properties? (kinda makes sense considering the elemental fury shout)

It's heavily implied/outright stated that the khajit used to be bosmer, before the bosmer did a wild hunt due to their great need.

During Wild Hunts, all of the bosmer become shapeshifting, shapeless monstrosities and rampage around to kill shit. About a third of those monstrosities never turn back. And some of those were the khajiit, after Azurah (Totally not Azura) linked their shapeshifting up to the lunar lattice.
