So I realize I haven't actually made a freeform fantasy adventure CYOA since probably Great War of Ordion.

What are other things should I add to backstory? I've been thinking of skills locked to certain backgrounds (Thieving would require Slums, Smithing requires Peasants or Tribesmen). I've also been thinking of adding curses and drawbacks, but I'm not certain how similar to Titanlands that would make it. One curse I had an idea of was similar to Guts' brand, where evil spirits attack you each night.

Just looking at it, as if I were doing a normal CYOA, one of the first things that stood out at me is that the races should have more specific perks. If not things that provide stat points, then something at least more tangible than, "large well of p/m energy" as that doesn't really provide any real information. Int he Ningyo you see a similar issue,it says underwater your attributes are magnified, but it doesn't say by how much.

Backstories?

Thieving? Yes. Maybe student or scholar, potentially an apprentice being groomed as a monk or some such. Things that fit the eastern setting.

Drawbacks are fine as long as they find a line between being too useful/easy to take and so punishing that none feel worth taking.

Frankly I think this applies to the site as a whole, to varying extents.

Take /co/ for example. Allegedly I've heard they get really Tumblresque at times but all the convos I've had there are about as chill as they are here on /tg/. Maybe it's because I've never set foot in the generals there. Meanwhile /tv/ is full of awful people, but if you go in knowing everything's mostly bant bullshit you can have a fun time.

Why do you make CYOAs?

I only come to these threads now and then so maybe this topic is chewed through already, but I am genuinely curious. I see some folks doing PDFs with dozens of pages long CYOAs but I just cant for the life of me understand what it is for. I know that some people who work feverishly at their homebrews or such often want to publish their thing but I dont think making a CYOA publication is a thing that can happen. Do folks just want to become the next Towergirls or something? I genuinely dont mean that as a dergatory statement, its just the only example I can think of where CYOA took off.

I guess just for fun also works?

Not entirely sure what the hell I'm doing with this, but if you're willing to handle a waifu focused cyoa without images, and the trainwreck of my scattered portions of story, I don't mind posting up what I got for people to play through and criticize.

Ver knows about as much about carpentry as she does computers, but she can do the delicate permanent shrinking enchantments for objects. Miya could get you some small stuff. Perhaps a small phone or tablet for general browsing. But it'll pricier than normal versions, so be careful with it. Something like a gaming PC is out of the question. There's not nearly enough demand of high-powered computing for tiny people.

Some people do it for fun. World building can be very rewarding. Some people do it to chase after their fantasies. Some people use CYOAs in elaborate roll playing games (D&D, not *that*). Some CYOAs are asking morbid/bizarre/whatIF questions about society. And some CYOAs are more like writing prompts.

My dungeon is bullshit.
It takes all the most annoying dungeon features - bottomless pits, difficult puzzles, hidden traps, and more - soups them up, and covers them in illusions.
You thought the Water Temple was bad? Now you have to move through an ice-floor puzzle just to get around, while currents suck you into 'bottomless' pits.
Running out of breath? Find an air trap that doesn't push you into a pit. Whoops, that one was a disguised ice trap! Don't worry, cutie, there's plenty of air in the dungeon!
Finally an above water part? Strong winds and even more 'bottomless' pits.
And on top of that, there would be illusions of different terrain (pits, ice, air, water, etc.), disguising elementals as ordinary boulders, just hiding the exit, and more.
But if it isn't frustrating enough, there's one more reason to hate the dungeon - a time limit. The rooms loop around (and randomize) as the heroes complete them, so they have to speedrun the entire dungeon to actually reach the boss room (with lots of illusions, a freezing rainstorm, and Mothman dust) instead of just looping back to the entrance with a consolation prize. And if they make one slip-up...

Well, they won't die, of course. The 'bottomless' pits lead to a collection area constantly thick with Mothman dust. After processing's complete, a new, loyal citizen-cum-food source pun entirely intended gets to join the comfy village I set up.

And while this runs itself, I get to snuggle up with a waifu and watch movies.

There's the strength penalty and the fact that it's five points cheaper, but are you limited to an oppai loli, or what?

Also, can you use Reproductive's stretchiness for other uses? Notably, if it lets you give blowjobs, it should let you swallow small apples and Sprites, if you have Inconsequential whole

And finally, does the Inconsequential anti-curse cover the features you get from, i.e., Wild Magic, Effeminate, or Squishy? If you have it, could you just go about your normal life, but tiny, or would people still freak out about you suddenly changing?

The Effeminate Anti-Curse allows the following additional changes:
No loss of strength
Does not have to fully turn men into women
Does not force a youthful, child-like facial structure on you.
You can be a bit taller / more muscular.

I suppose Reproductive could be used in other ways, but keep in mind that it takes a good bit of force to distort you like that, meaning it would be a struggle to manually stretch your mouth around a fruit. It's probably more of a hassle than it is worth.

The Inconsequential Anti-Curse won't make them think Wild Magic and the like is normal, per se. They'll accept that your size and race (anything visibly apparent from the start) to be normal and acceptable for you. Anything after that might catch them off-guard, but they won't freak out about it. You'd get reactions like "Oh, I didn't know you could bounce back to shape after something falls on you. Cool."

This CYOA is good, but could be easily improved by highlighting the mechanical effects of the Purposes, to make them stand out against the blob of white text.

I especially like the layout. Simple, easy on the eyes, not cluttered up with tons of pointless shit. And the illustrations are cute.

Mystic Paladin Build that specializes in spells and mixes magic into melee combat. He uses Qigong to boost his physical attributes when in melee and uses arcane magic for ranged attacks. Gatekeeper for utility and attack tricks by porting towards opponents for offense and setting traps up so if they try to chase me through one of my portals they get ambushed/punished. With his high charisma, socialite, bravery and persuasion skills he is can rally his allies when in combat and usher cooperation between the factions and races during the final battle.

The Arch Demon of knowledge and the madness of fate, Cyrot.
He supposedly wanders the land as a Old Beggar who finds people seeking knowledge and shares some with them in return for food, lodging, their soul or random trinkets, only the knowledge the Old Beggar shares usually leads to the recipiant finding out some horrible truth about Fate which either leaves them insane or obsessive.
Either way the person will strive to find more knowledge and in the process most certainly join the Church of Knowledge. It is on the outside a place of learning that is known throughout the land for its libraries full of books, alchemy labs, classes of students and researchers striving towards finding the truth of the natural world and so on.
The Headmaster and Headmistress are supposedly the son and daugther of the school's founding father, even though no one knows who he was or what happened to him. They are both respected scholars and take turns leading the school and traveling the lands teaching people about the value of knowledge and establishing new schools.
Only the ones who have seen The Truth of Fate or are chosen to learn The Truth are allowed to go behind the facade and join the cult.
There rituals are performed with living sacrifices, both of man and beast. The first usually brought in by a dark hooded figure with glowing red eyes, one who has supposedly been seen in connection with ritualistic murders in various cities.
Next to the seats of the Headmistress and Headmaster is one slightly less ornate but still impressive chair reserved for the future Dean, who was the Headmaster and Headmistresses says will arrive when the time is right.

Books, pappers, scrolls and the very letters themselves blowing on the winds, falling out of melting bookshelves dripping on the ground from their previous upside-down location. All the while there are strings lying on the ground, going up in into the clouds above, disapearing into nothingness and reappearing again in a different place.
If one is lucky and manage to avoid the angelical beings patrolling the skies, gathering written books, following the threads, filling empty books with scripture only to have the letter themselves slide out the side with every turn of the page then one will find a lone arched doorway where all the strings seem to enter. Inside a seemingly infinite room the strings are floating in the air with large nails holding them in place, these nails if touched show a face, place or seemingly random string of words.

A bit of lore, it's no longer sins against virtues. Heaven believes that the sins were sent as an advance group of sorts to kick-start the apocalypse. You may or may not have a time-limit now. Let's say 6 years, to defeat the sins or else the end begins. Or maybe it's coming no matter what. Either way, you're going to need a bit of a boost. Pick one. Whatever doesn't get picked will be saved for heaven's use when the time comes. Charity is allowed to own a Holy Gift, but kindness cannot Gift them. Envy cannot use his power to steal them, but they can still be stolen the conventional way, so be careful. We do NOT want these falling into the wrong hands

Universal Focus- A shard of the altar of diligence, holding this aloft will cause the infinite energy of the universe to flow through you. Diligence is constantly getting energy from the universe at a slow drip, this grants a steady stream for five minutes. Even as one of the chosen, your body isn't made to handle this much energy coming in all at once, and if you don't constantly use that energy as you get it it will eat away at your body, fizzling it into nothingness. At the end of the five minutes, you are drained of all energy you had, regardless of source. Diligence keeps whatever he had stockpiled, but cannot stockpile energy from the universal focus or use it to super (he's pretty much already Super 3 or 4 when activated anyway).

Second Chance- The first time you die, you awaken three days later in a cave in the middle-east

The Reward- You may select a mortal to become the unnoficial Virtue of Karma. Karma has the basic Immortallity and Supriority. The more virtuous Karma acts, the more generally powerful they will become, gaining speed, strength, etc, and strengthening a passive effect called [Golden Rule]. The Golden Rule reflects a percent of incoming damage back at their attacker, maxing out at 50% (Karma takes half damage, and the enemy comes out equally injured)

The aura only really provides minor buffs. Pretty much everything that could be doubted as actually being an effect as opposed to just coincidence/placebo. As stated, the aura cleanses diseases, speeds up natural healing processes, and makes you feel full of energy. It can also make you more confident, improve reaction time and balance, help you remember things... though at no point does anything get really strong. You need Humility for that.

I'm trying to decide on the last Holy Gift (I decided on just twelve, so we end up with an even number). Probably...
The Sabbath - Every sunday, you wake up in heaven, and "spend the day" there. It's very relaxing, easing any and all stress built up about the sins and such over the past week, giving you a chance to collect your thoughts. While in heaven, your powers are in stasis: you don't have access to them, but you also don't have to worry about them degrading. At the "end of the day", you wake up on earth that same sunday morning

Something to think of for balancing this, though, is that things like The Sabbath and The Reward can't be stolen. Karma can be killed, but there's still something to say about not having to worry about not resurrecting when you chose Second Chance. Maybe instead of having Second chance be automatic, instead you have Lazarus' Rags, which you have to have on your person when you die. It is a pretty powerful gift, after all.

Alright, then something longer.

[Plot] finds you in the middle of an expansive maze, taking many styles of architecture depending on where you land. The maze itself is interspersed with large open areas of bitch darkness and whit completely cubic concrete buildings. The only thing you know about this maze is that your waifu is at the end of it! How contrived! The entire maze is populated with strange and horrific, though very rare, monsters. This all seems well and good, until you end up with no choice but to venture into one of those concrete "villages." An encounter with one of the monsters leads you to take shelter in some of the houses. The majority of the houses are barren concrete, but eventually you find one that isn't. In fact you find that it's furnished in a manner similar to your earliest remembered childhood home. You find a mirror and see that you have become something close to pic related, or any other humanoid abomination. From there everything becomes a frantic sprint to find clues about the origins of the maze, hold on to your humanity, and escape to your "waifu"(or any other thing that would lead an anon to get into this situation without realizing the consequences at first). Each option list like "equipement" or especially "companions" could be subverted horrifically or depressingly. I.E. a companion choice could be that teddy bear you loved more than anything as a child. How this manifests, however, is that you always find it in the most unexpected spots, always watching you. Every time it shows up it also has a smaller toy. Every toy you've ever had, one at a time, shows up with it. Is this some trich of the Maze to terrify you, or are your old childhood friends trying to comfort you? What is they're saying their final goodbye?

Essentially, a horror themed situation with moments of nostalgic depression and the even rarer heartwarming moment, what with all that "motivated by your desire to be loved" kind of thing mentioned earlier.
