I often find that replacing Burn with Stamina is a solid houserule.

>What are some optional rules your party has used?

Elephant in the Room alternative feat tax. I liked it. It cleaned up a lot of the feat taxes and was nice.

Background skills or skill groups is always a must.
>>
>What are some optional rules your party has used?
Background Skills are the major one.

Unchained Monks & Rogues as well.

I use Unchained Barbarian, but with Chained Barbarian Rage (the only thing I don't like about Unchained Barbarian is the different in rage).

I use parts of retraining and downtime (retraining takes longer, downtime has been changed because parts are retarded).

I use Kingdom Building but with Ultimate Rulership and Ultimate Conquering (3rd party rulesets by the guy who wrote Kingdom building that fixes a ton of the issues).
Also because I am a horrible person I do not use gp/sp/cp and instead each country has their own currency/exchange rates. In much of the world they will still accept your currency because it is good silver, but not every kind of currency is accepted everywhere.

Pictures, path of war corrupting the children.

PoW classes are boring an unfun to me, but archetypes with partial initiating and characters with Martial Training feats are pretty great. Especially my nigga Aegis.

I like this one. Especially if one country uses a heavier weight for gold coins and everyone wants them over other countries coins so money changers have to be on the ball.

I could also give Appraise some love if you tie it to that skill.

Here is something I have done:
>Elves live in a large slaving empire, where in order to emulate their fey ancestor's "courts" they enslave lesser races as a reflection of the lesser fey who flock to the sides of the seelie and unseelie sidhe
>one such race are trolls
>Elves do not have formal currency, instead established prices for precious metals, a elf will carry around spools of wire of precious metal and snip off an amount
>the reason this works is because essentially all elves know mending, when receiving an amount they will use mending to attach the wire to their own spool (conserving the currency)
>it is considered rude to give multiple pieces and rude to give underweighted pieces
>this gives rise to "A Troll Finger", so as to not offend elven shop keepers a troll will almost always overpay (due to their oversized hands and not wanting to offend and snip off an extra bit). The extra metal is called a troll's finger. It is considered low brow to overpay as it is associated with lesser races.

I also have a bunch of systems for money lenders.

I like the wire and the mending route. Not sure about the trolls finger. That could just be my inner Jewbadar showing though.
>>
>>49990227
What do you mean why though?

Elves try and emulate the fey because they were essentially cast off as afterthoughts by the sidhe. They are trying to be acknowledged as they own court like the Seelie, Unseelie, or one of the lesser courts (there are half a dozen, the elves aren't any).

Elves are actually the children of Humans and Sidhe, only a few elves know this and they fucking guard the secret as a great shame and believe this is why they were barred from their ancestor's ranks.

This is also why elves have a deep ingrained racial hatred of humans.

Is it really not okay to out-perform everyone else in combat?

I mean I'm a little familiar with Lo5R, and their martials are explicitly for different types of combat, while their sneaky characters are for sneaky shenanigans, their social characters are for blackmail and protecting the party from being ordered to kill themselves, and their magic-y types are for anti-demon anti-magicy shenanigans.
>>
>>49990265
Actually better how about one for non-DSP tripfags.

Does anyone have a list of non-DSP tripfags?

>>
>>49990290
>Is it really not okay to out-perform everyone else in combat?
It's a matter of degrees, but generally no.

Pathfinder isn't like shadowrun where you have the "Face, hacker, gunbunny, etc".

Combat is most of the game and rules, so it's expected that everyone participates in a roughly equal manner.
>>
>>49990290
L5R is a very different kind of game to pathfinder, and no character (even in L5R) should ONLY have combat skills.

If you do you are literally a bad samurai and your GM should punish you for it because you fuck up every time you are in a social situation and get docked honor. If you're a samurai and don't have an art & game you should be punished. No seriously that's how the system is supposed to work, it's part of bushido code.

Well the problem is that MOST characters are built around combat. It's not like when the street sam out-shines the face with a gun. It's entirely possible to make one character who is a combat monster AND just as good at diplomacy/whatever.
>>
>>49990413
you should go die.
>>
>>49990388
I'd have to agree with Buildposter on this, combat is a huge part of the game and PF classes are designed around the assumption every class can contribute to combat in a meaningful way.

Outshining a character in something they didn't invest or design for at all is one thing, but everyone builds to take part in combat.
>>
>>49990333
A huge problem in L5R however is that NPCs and character creation are massively borked. The game basically assumes you're going to stay at home and keep getting trained until insight 3.

A starting courier might easily talk himself into getting executed because of slightly below average rolls if he gets into any kind of opposed intrigue whatsoever. Likewise, the starting combatants are utterly fucked against bandits, most especially the archer ones.

Uh... Actually, Paladin was originally going to be as weak or weaker than its 3.5 counterpart, because it was the "superior roleplaying opportunity class"

Yes, really.

The fans in playtesting bitchslapped that idea, which is the only reason we got a balanced paladin.
>>
Why are the psionics classes so much better designed than the PoW ones?
>>
>>49990592

Roleplaying opportunity should not be seen as a resource some classes have more of than others, that's a toxic viewpoint for the hobby. If there's a problem with a class's ability to be a unique character or provide roleplay than mmaaaayyybbbeeee you should be fixing the class or folding it into an archetype or hell I dunno, work out a "How to" manual on roleplaying the class.

My next place takes place in the Inner Sea of Faerun. The orcs there are trading with, and learning from, the Chessentans and Untherites (Greeks, Egyptians, and Babylonians) there.

Orc ferocity combined with Greek thinking and Babylonian aesthetics will be the greatest threat the Realms have ever known.

The area that comprised Hungary during the Middle Ages, with Slavic merchant dragons having good relationships with elves, humans, dwarves, and halflings. There are native american hobgoblin samurai, animal people and faefolk to the west, which is basically the American Wild Wild West. To the north are grumpy scandinavian colonist dragons, and to the south across a sea full of ravenous sea monsters is an empire that sends raiding parties north to fight against venetian merchants.

The main kingdom basically has the CIA. But instead of being badass super spies, they're badass super knights, and the players are trying to become some of those badass super knights.

Several hundred years after an occult fueled apocalypse North America has finally become livable once more. Settlers from mainland china live in city states along the west coast, now having declared independence from imperial rule, and struggle in constant conflict with the barbaric tribes to the south and their rattling smoke belching motored vehicles. Dotting the landscape is pieces more valuable than gold. Rubber, chemicals, perhaps even preserved documents on how to make them lie buried beneath the landscape. The California coast has become hostile, and in recent time the city states unstable after breaking away from control of the Imperial Dynasty. With beasts twisted by strange energies, black oil barbarians, and greedy abhumans abounding how can one make their fortune in this new land?

In summary, chinafornia.

Cheliax is the Infernal Empire of Not!British and Not!Spanish during the Age of Sail.

Andoran is Colonial America with a dash of modern corporatism.

Alkenstar is Steampunk Land where 99% of the setting's weapons are produced.

The Worldwound is a rip in reality where you can form suspicious covenants so you can get all up in the Abyss's asshole.

Ustalav is Gothic Germany and Transylvania.

I'm making a fairly large homebrew hybrid class between the Cleric and the Bard, and I'm kinda failing at describing one of the domains performances-

The performance (Should be roughly on par with Inspire Courage) makes it so that, if you miss an attack against an enemy, the area your enemy is standing in becomes difficult terrain.

Having difficulty balancing it, however.

The world is flat. In fact, the entire cosmology is flat. The world is perfect square, about ten million square kilometres. At each edge is a bottomless canyon, and across it, one of the elemental planes. There are ruined bridges here and there, from pre-history, when elementals mingled with the humans, before four thousand years of war broke out.

The four gods, living on not!Olympus, take a semi-active role, giving "psionic" power to the humans (in this case, psionics are a sort of limited divinity, safe for mortals to touch) and are the only reason humans aren't extinct. The gods grew along with the humans, starting as simple concepts like "nature" or "home", and slowly evolving to cover more and more related subjects as they came up (The Nature goddess, for example, covers civilization, because she became a Farming goddess when agriculture was discovered, and then a Brewing goddess when it turned out agriculture could be used to make beer, and then beer meant people lived closer together..)

There are geniekin, among the humans, and in most places they're viewed with the same sort of suspicion that tieflings are in base setting.

The elementals have been silent for a few hundred years now since a massive rout, and the humans have fallen to theological war amongst each other.

Here, because I like you
Also, for future reference, you can always google. There's some interesting stuff on Oglaf Fox, or Oglaf in general on google
>>
>>49993229
Well psionics and divinity have always been fairly related. the biggest difference is that a mortal has his own body's power backing his ability to impose his will to bend the universe, while a diety has the accumulated belief of hundreds of thousands of worshipers to really put the universe at an embarrassing angle.

In many ways though, you're learning to do things the same way gods do it.

Chief god is missing.
World is flat. World is also a place to make souls into something worthwhile for the gods.
We're on the second iteration though, due to 'technical difficulties.'
Elves split into two different factions, one which took after insects and became a hive mind, the other which valued individually and lost to the hivemind.
Dwarves are dwarves, but they're dwarf giants, not humans.
Beastfolk make up the token short race
Humans are the fading race here.
Dozens of misc. races brought in by troublesome world features.

Only begun working on it. Chief antagonists are the elves. They have an expansionist empire culturally similar to the Aztecs, plus some added canabalism for good measure. Debating on whether they should be limited to bronze by incorporating the aversion to iron/steel that occasionally shows up in myth or not. Allied with dwarves, who are very big on keeping their ancestors close to them. Like, heavy necromancy close. All other races are considered "lesser" and are only good for sacrifices and the cookpot, mostly controlled through fear. At the other end if the spectrum are a coalition of races who are largely content to remain on their continent. Still percolating on things, but I'm thinking humans, catfolk, lizardfolk, and maybe something else. There was a HFY copypasta I liked that mentioned other species joining humanity, so that's kinda what I'm going for there.

Once there was a great dragon empire, but now that's mostly just ruins and rumors. The setting is mostly generic fantasy stuff primarily set in what appears to be the Americas because I suck at geography. Elves live in forests and jungles, Dwarves like to live underground where they can mine and shit, Halflings either live in urban areas or a bunch of hills. Humans are as diverse as ever, but I'm trying to add some more diversity to the other races, even if they still gravitate to the old stereotypes. Drow were created by a green dragon that wanted to mine for precious jewels and metals but only had elf slaves so he experimented on them until he created dark elves. Then they worshiped spiders or something to help them kill their boss.

There's a mage-o-cratic Mage Republic, made up of city-states with a school/university set up. Lots of snoots, lots of magic nonsense. Serpentfolk, Naga, Medusae, etc. have an empire of scaly assholes in the jungle somewhere, even though jungle elves and various ape-people struggle against them.
>>
>>49991875
We're sort of going the other way. In the country we've spent most of our time in, Orcs/greenskins range between second-class citizens to slaves, and since we have a Half-Orc party member, he wants very strongly to begin a slave revolt. Luckily for the status quo, he's an asshole and does not feel that a 50/50 split of the population in one city is good enough odds to begin, so it's sort of on the back burner until he grows some cajones or, like, invents the machine gun.

"It is incapable of ever giving a fuck" is one of the better arcane teachers you can hope for.

There's a small handful of nurturing loving-third-parent type teachers out there, and you might be lucky enough to get one, but "it consumes stars and maybe thinks you're a small animal that's cutely trying to copy it" is actually a decent second or third place.

This is because a lot of the worse ones are a LOT more numerous AND FAR FAR WORSE.

All in all, "can I teach this human thing a trick" is one of the better ends for human.

After treating a LE Monk to 20dmg with a Heavy Mace and screaming "HUGE GUTS" at a high level succubus, I hit level 2. Has this class always been so utterly ridiculous?
>>
>>49990295
Hey, I'm working for DSP on something now, so I'm not sure I qualify anymore.

If you think a class that can deal 20 damage at level 1 to a fucking monk is ridiculous than yeah, every fucking class in the game is ridiculous. Retard.

Sythesists are worse off than base summoners because you just shot your action economy in the foot, congrats.

Great sword, 18 strength with power attack. Congrats, you do 2d6+9 (6 from str, 3 from power attack) non crit without factoring in anything like rage, and you'll still easily hit the fucking monk because you have a +4 on your attack bonus.

SynthSum isn't anything special.
>>
>>49996633
Synth is crazy fun, and serves the dual purpose of bringing the "pretty fucking broken" Summoner down to "actually this is fine yeah" levels.

Ironically, it's the one that gets banned, because the eidolon replacing your physical stats gives people 3.5 druid flashbacks.

(I played a Half-Elf Wild Caller Synth through to 12th once, I hope you have as good a time as I did playing Build-a-Beast Workshop. 25 evo points, yeesh.)
>>
What language do people on golarions peak? would a earth person be able to understand?
>>
>>49996832
The Common tongue is more properly known as Taldane, and it's not equivalent to any language of Earth.
>>
>>49996858
Apparently, it's vaguely similar to Czech, according to Reign of Winter.
>>
>>49996858
Don't forget Ching Chong Common, the Tien language.
>>
>>49991928
No. DM'ing a campaign in which elves and fey creatures are eradicated though. Or at least considered things of legend. There are half elves, but it's been over a thousand years since the elves were last seen so these half elves are 90 percent human looking with just slightly pointy ears and thinner looking appearances (mechanically they are half elves though)
>>
>>49996812
That sounds like the perfect way to build the Doomslayer in a fantasy setting. Assuming this game doesn't fall through, I'll probably buy up weapon proficiency feats. Say, if I evolve my Eidolon to have proficiency, do I benefit from that as a Synthesist? Or am I just better off putting feats into wielding the great sword and using evo for more arms to hold it with?

>>49996824
Yea, I like the way SynthSum rolls. Human Synth, playing it as a Bloodrager with better spell progression. I know it isn't the most efficient thing in the world, but it gets pretty close to the concept I had in mind. As someone who normally exclusively plays full-casters, this is so relaxing in comparison. Wake up, put on ass-kicking shoes, use natural attacks and swing with weapon ad infinitum.
>>
>>49996885
You benefit from all its evolutions, yes. Including weapon proficiencies.
>>
Why do you play such a seriously broken game system like 3.pf?? I don't get it. I mean there are OSR titles and 5E that play so much better and where classes work across the entire level range of the game. Please explain to me why you do this?
>>

>>

Why do you come and try to preach/bait in Pathfinder threads? That doesn't work either.
>>

>>
>>49997038
Because I enjoy systems like Spheres, Psionics, and Tome of Battle/Path of War way more fun than what OSR shit or god forbid 5e could provide.
>>
>>49997038
Path of War, honestly. No other (sub)system comes close to giving me creative freedom with my martials.
>>

Is it worth it to pick up a Psicrystal staff as a marksman?

I wanted to pick up a Psicrystal for better initiative, fortitude saves, and more places to keep Psionic Focus, but I realized I had to actually hold the staff for it to be useful. That would mean I'd be spending money on it just to double my Initiative bonus from the Psicrystal and nothing else.
>>
>>49997258
Or just don't play with minmaxing asshole. Despite the horror stories that /tg/ tells, Schrodinger Wizards dont happen in real life. After playing thus game for fifteen years or so since 3.0, I've never had a party where the cleric/wizard/druid/whatever else overshadowed some or all of the party. As long as the players understand that the game is supposed to be fun for everyone, it should be fine.
>>
>>49997335
Yeah but even when not playing with Min Maxy assholes banning the core classes is a good idea.

Really? Because my whole experience with 5E was pretty much nothing but being pissed off at how shit the BM was compared to the most generic, garden variety Warblade possible and at having horrible luck and ending up failing physical skill checks over and over while the Wizard managed to succeed at them on pure luck. Fuck 5E.

Skaldic is spoken by the Ulfen, it's quite literally Old Norse with a runic language inspired by Dwarves

Varisian is Gypsy-talk spoken by those freaks in Varisia.

Yeah depending on writers of the time. I mean the Tech-and"totally-never-even-half-magic" is due to the movies being popular.
We'll see if Dr Strange changes anything.

BUT if we're going for sure the Alien-Tech route then I vote- well I vote tech, but If I had to choose a magic type: Psionic and Psi-tech.

Polyglot is an umbrella term for a large number of mutually intelligible Mwangi languages.
>>
>>49991938
My not so original setting is on an earth map and works around WW1-era tech and intrigue wise (we use a combination of modern firearms, and some technological gear for things like radio, etc) Magic is kept primarily to the other planes, though mortals at large are aware of its existance its incredibly rare. Many countries are devoted to particular gods to some degree, and warrior-priests are pretty commonplace in the trenches and on the battlefields.

The two campaigns I've dm'd on the setting went pretty well. First campaign was hunting down an artifact with magical abilities in the sahara, involved an awesome getaway on horse and a secret society of wizards plotting in the background. The second was in the trenches in a war set in the amazonian rainforest between demonically empowered tribals. Very zulu to an extent, surprisingly the party was able to talk the chieftens into turning against their demonic masters.
>>
>>49998093

Dr Strange very heavily changed it. Though they do frame magic initially in the context of science to help get the basic concept of 'What a spell is' across.
>>
>>49998158
I ran a horror game in 3.5 years ago and played Midnight Syndicate in the background.

Totally forgot about Boar Style, definitely taking that.
I did consider that combo, but I decided it fit the character more to just hit something really hard rather than hit it a whole lot.
>>
>>49999638
Panther is pretty baller, although it has the problem of requiring enemies to attack you first, which they're probably not going to do after the first few times.
>>
>>49999674
You might also consider something kind of fun that Horror Adventures made way better. If you grab Scorpion Style (which isn't actually a style feat) and Wolf Style/Trip/Savage, you could do something like apply a templated curse to your target.
>>
>>49999874
I've only got 23 HP, so taking hits wouldn't be too good for me, especially since I only have +3 to hit.

Someone remind me, in pathfinder I remember that using a weapon sized for a creature larger (or small) imparts a penalty no matter what, even if you're proficient in the weapon. Was it 3.5 that ruled that changing the size would increase/decrease the "weapon type" instead of just always giving a penalty? IE: A medium creature could use a large sized longsword as though it were a two-handed weapon, a large creature could use a medium-sized glaive as though it were a one-handed weapon? Is it actually just a houserule?

am I faggot for wanting to use that ruling to have an Oracle who is only proficient with longswords and simple weapons get a large-sized longsword made?
>>
>>50000022
That's because you picked TWF, Snake/Panther/Dragon only needs to attack once with his standard action, rest are AoO either for enemies missing or for enemies trying to AoO on him.

I played a Mythic Master of many styles/hungry ghost/qiggong with mythic combat reflexes, I spent 1 ki to get +4 to AC, and with mobility, I was moving around the battlefield kicking everybody. That was the closest I could get to my old Monk/Psywar with tashalatorra, karmic strike and double hit.
>>
>>50000114
In 3.5 there was powerful build a feature that allowed you to use weapons one category size bigger without penalties, normally is -4, with monkey grasp is -2. In PF is -4, not sure if there's a feat, if you're certain barbarian archetype which name I don't remember you can reduce the penalty up to 0
>>
>>50000062
Human Monk with, traded my traits for a feat and got my bonus style feat from MoMS
>>50000116

Sure, a Wizard with the best spell for every situation doesn't exist, but see, there's always a 2nd best and 3rd best spell that get the job done, and, for some reasons those spells are broad as fuck and deal with many situatiations, and THOSE are the spells you see in every fucking "must pick" list, and they work. Only when the GM scratches their head to come up with complex as fuck encounters to deal exclusively against the wizard those spells fail, but in those encounters the martials are already dead before rolling Ini.

I mean, to be honest, I feel like the Oracle, Cleric, and Bard both have a bit too much Martial in them.

While designing the class, I'm not thinking badass cleric clawing into battle. I'm thinking more along the lines of british commanders standing upright in a fight. Or guys from the Red Cross.

TL;DR-
It's d6 hit die, with arcanist style casting split between Wisdom (For DCs) and Cha (For spells per day).

Has a core tenet (It's Inspire Courage equivalent), and Sermons. The sermons are basically bardic performances, gained at level 1, 5, and every four levels after.

Pastor's Lessons are basically Arcanist Talents, and either alter bardic performances, alter your spells, or grant new abilities.

Currently I'm working on class features level 1-6, AKA a sermon, two bardic performances and three lessons per domain.
To be honest, most of them will almost certainly be stolen from Bard archetypes or other materials. Because there are a lot of domains, and thrice as many subdomains, so it'll take a long while.
>>
>>50000887
Ah, so the unnerfed version of the archetype.
>>
>>50000573
What I normally find is most people can't play a wizard to more than 2/3 of the actual ability of the class. However they still will have much more utility.

The vast majority of players can't handle playing prepared casters.
