Posting bad ideas. A bit of interest in this last thread but we'll see where it goes this time.

I will say that I understand these might have to be reworded for one of two reasons: either it's too confusing and would work better by linking it to the creature then letting the creature tap in addition to requiring you pay the exiled card's cost, then you cast a copy from exile. OR, it's too much of a "you'd need new Comp Rules and that's no bueno" issue and that'd necessitate a similar change in wording, I think. But other than that, it seems like it could be fun. I did a demo for every color, even though it started out as a UBr concept.

I'm making a set with -1/-1 counters. There's quite a lot of cool stuff you can do with them.

>>49938039
Repeatable omni-destruction is not okay at five mana. Angel of Despair kills one permanent, once, at seven mana.
Also, if you build your deck right, and it dies, you will almost always win.
Weird to see a living bomb that isn't red.

>>49939277
You know what would be interesting? If it used -1/-1 counters instead of plague counters. Provides a hard limit on a very powerful control effect.

>>49940247
Thing is, even if you overprice these by a shitload, they're still too strong when repeated. Adding a "discard a card" to the glyph cost would go a long way to fixing this.
>>
>>49940327
I tried this; more power to your if you can manage it. I'm not saying the design space is narrow; I'm saying I'm terribly uncreative. I'd love to see someone pull it off, but people tend to like +1/+1 counters better so you might meet a bit of resistance to the notion. I'd personally like to see it. Get yourself a set symbol so we know what cards are associated with your set. Card seems fine; green easily gets 5/5s for 5 at uncommon and it kills itself to not die, so it's diminishing returns. No trample means it can be chumped so that helps keep it fair.

Yeah, didn't think so. Maybe...
>XWB, T: Destroy target nonland permanent with converted mana cost X or less.
Kinda wanted land destruction, but I can see why it's not the best thing to have.

>Also, if you build your deck right, and it dies, you will almost always win.
Should I just get rid of that aspect entirely? Or limit it somehow?

>Weird to see a living bomb that isn't red.
I thought about it, but that would really restrict what he could destroy. It seems that targeted Red destruction doesn't really hit anything but artifacts and lands, and I want this to at least hit creatures. Though, strangely, Red can boardwipe pretty much everything. Probably going to do an Obliterate reprint with Human Bomb art though.

>Dr. Death
Feels kinda odd for the ability to threaten to kill him as well. Though I will rebalance it somehow. Might just make it a flat effect.

>card
Eh... Not sure about this. I guess it's fine for an uncommon.
>>
>>49940432
Well, my thought was that since you have to have the Glyph card to cast it to get the effect, as long as I cost them similarly to Cipher cards, it's alright because you're paying mana and tapping instead of dealing combat damage. If these abilities were just straight up on a creature, they'd be overpowered, but the fact that you have to have the card, cast it, then get the activated ability I think softens the blow a little. Ain't saying it's perfect, but I think it's worth exploring. Of course, if it balances better, I'm not that opposed to making them turn your creatures into Spellshapers; I love Spellshapers. I'm just seeing about what can be done to keep it as low-drag as possible.
>>
>>49940528
Well thanks man, glad you do. It's not often I come up with something people like, sad to say.

Student seems fine. At first I was going to ask why he doesn't just filter the mana himself, but in the case of sets that care about artifacts, it can matter and the extra step really isn't that big a deal.
>>
>>49940528
Going by Gold tokens, I think it should say
>Sacrifice this artifact
>>
>>49940602
Having to deal combat damage is a much riskier proposition than a tap. They should be much closer to creature abilities than spells.

Thanks, though I changed it to get away from counters. Now it's a +1/+1 pump and your choice of a keyword (haste, vigilance, flying).

>Well, my Idea was
OK, I can see that. Though I guess my problem is that counting lands is way more Green's thing. Actually, a quick query on MagicCards for the string
>each land you control
or
>number of lands you control
found 0 in mW, 2 in mU (one is Terraformer, which affects lands, not count them), 2 in mB (and one of them is Herald of Leshrac, which has its own twist on this), 1 in mR, and 12 in mG. And for the 6 in multicolor, ever single one but Dakkon has G in it.

I guess you could count Plains since it seems like every color can count its land type without issue. Or maybe leave it as-is and just add G. I guess in that case it would be easy to justify by making them Human tokens, since you could then point to Innistrad's Human GW tribe.

>Dr. Death
That, and there's already a legendary enchantment that does -1/-1 for all creatures at 2BB. I guess making him a creature could be used to justify it having the same cost... but yeah, I'd rather play it safe for now.

URG because the original idea is inspired by... Trap Essence, I think its name is. Though GWU does make sense.

This costs 4UU when attached to a creature (Draining Whelk), but that puts all the counters on one creature. I'd cost it conservatively at 2GWU.

Oh, and this is a problem I've been stumbling on for a while now: Is there any good way to portray a character who can turn himself to light and back? One of the Freedom Fighters characters does that, and I have no clue how to go about doing that.

>coat
This looks pretty alright.

>light
Need more details. Do they end up still being able to interact with things? Or are they literally made of light and therefore intangible. Because if the latter, you could make them become an Enchantment until end of turn and lose all abilities. Or, you could use phasing.

>details.
Light isn't intangible. How do you think lasers work? Anyway, I'm just going to let Wikipedia explain it for me. The character is Ray Terrill, superhero name... The Ray.
>Ray absorbs, stores and processes light; uses the energy to fly and create destructive bursts of coherent radiation. His energy capacity is virtually limitless. He is capable of manipulating light externally to create illusions and even solid light constructs, as well as render himself and others invisible He can convert his body completely into any wavelength on the EM Spectrum. No physical harm from impact can come to him in this form (as demonstrated when Lobo punched Ray through his skull[9]). This process can also be used to "reset" damage that his physical form has already sustained (seen in the story "Ray Gets Shot In The Head[10]" where a bullet was lodged at the base of his skull; Ray was told by doctors he would be paralyzed from the neck down, but after turning to his energy form the damage was healed instantly). As pure energy, he can travel at the speed of light and cross space unassisted.

>phasing
Pic related. Though I wouldn't oppose using flicker.
>>
>>49959643
Tangibility is touch, /CO/anon. If you can grab light and manipulate it with your hands, you deserve your own Magic card. If he was made of pure light, nobody could touch him, hence he would be intangible. However, if you want to be ultra-pedantic (and why not, I guess) light does have a physical presence, but for all intents and purposes regarding combat in general in MtG, he'd be intangible. Couldn't punch him, could fry him with lightning or other energy transfer attacks.

Anyway.

He reads a bit like Ms. Marvel. Hm. You could do something where when he becomes the target of a spell or ability, he becomes indestructible until end of turn and gains counters based on the CMC of the spell or the cost of the ability. He can then use the counters to do things?

>phasing
It's just misunderstood, man. And also really bad for the rules/gamestate in general.

Have a card with twelve fucking lines of text, plus a slightly better version of that card.

Honestly, here's what I wished I could get on the card:

Ill Fate (or a way better name)
XB Enchantment
~ enters the battlefield with X fate counters.
2: Add or remove a fate counter from ~. Any player may activate this ability, but only any time they could cast a sorcery and only once per turn.
2 (or more?), T, Sacrifice ~:
If ~ had four or more fate counters, each creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.
If ~ had eight or more fate counters, each creature gets -4/-4 until end of turn and each player discards a card instead.
If ~ had twelve or more fate counters, destroy each creature and each player discards two cards at random instead.

Alternately, instead of 12, it's 13, and the scaling is less orderly- the first ability at, say, 2 counters, then at like 6 or something. Maybe try to take unlucky numbers from many cultures if such a thing is possible.

Honestly this card is too much of a clusterfuck to make work.

Also, I have a strange question: How important do you think color identities are when tied to factions? Would a set/block that focused on "lesser" factions that were bound more to color that worked for greater factions that weren't be interesting to people? Or do you need Guilds/Clans/Shards to feel like the set is a more coherent thing? I have some ideas and I want to know if they are interesting to anyone before I proceed.

This bothers me to a degree I suppose it shouldn't, but eh, I guess the idea isn't worth exploring then. Better to not waste my time on something nobody wants. I don't want to fudge mechanics into colors, I want to make cards with mechanics heavily tied to their colors in a world where the colors mingle more naturally and aren't tied to factions with hard color identities. Original idea for this is that when she died, she's make a token for each permanent attached to her then attach one of those permanents to one of those tokens. Turns out it didn't work as I thought it would, but I plan on going back to the idea. This is basically Kemba on steroids. Also, does 3/3 seem good for DC Amazons? They need to be bigger than 2/2, but I don't want to go crazy with making huge tokens either. For reference, Batman is 3/3, Wondy is 6/6.

>It means that different tribal areas/associations/groups might have stronger color ties (this tribe is RG, etc) but the over-arching plot and the greater powers are essentially 5-color
Isn't that nearly every multicolor focused block ever? I mean, the only real exception I can think of is Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, which had an uneven distribution of the colors throughout the tribes.

>I want to make cards with mechanics heavily tied to their colors in a world where the colors mingle more naturally and aren't tied to factions with hard color identities.
Isn't that how the colors work naturally? I've always told people I'm against colors matter because the mechanics of the colors themselves will naturally play off of the mechanics of the other colors.

>>49973644
It'd take a lot of examples to really make it "make sense" I guess, but basically what I am trying to convey is that these two cards could be in the same army, even if there isn't a BW faction. The "unifying" factors would be multicolor generals of varying shades, who all in turn work for kingdoms greater than themselves, which employ/represent all five colors. So you support draft archetypes with some multicolor support, but there aren't any real "factions" like Temur or Orzhov. Does that make sense? It's cult of personality stuff in a set where colors are what they are, and unify into a greater whole through some contrivance or another. They can all play together, depending on the deck you build, but there are no defined lore "factions" as stated above. If this doesn't make sense, I'm aborting the notion. I personally think it's a simple concept but I guess I'm having a hard time explaining it, which I suppose means it really isn't.
>>
>>49973883
That's basically how most non multicolor sets work out
>>
>>49974059
I guess it would probably end up feeling more like a Core set, yeah. I mean you have to support archetypes for draft so having workhorse 2 and 3 color uncommons and rares is necessary, and adds flavor, as would the included Legends, but the core of the set would be monocolor with a smattering of multicolor commons and uncommons. Probably more than a Core set has had, but less than say Ravnica or something. The big change would be that any custom mechanics wouldn't be tied to factions, they'd be tied to color, so you wouldn't end up with anything like Extort or Evolve floating around.
>>
>>49974121
The main reason for factionalism in the heavy multicolor sets is actually down to color fixing. Trying to support every color pair in a set would be a nightmare.
>>
>>49973883

Hey. I'm working on a Planeswalker OC who travels between planes opening inns, both as regular places of business for the locals and as neutral hubs for planeswalkers to meet, relax and gossip. He likes to name his businesses after other planes. e.g.The Kamigawa Inn on Zendikar

He'd travels planes to collects artifacts to staff or improve his businesses and likes to collect recipes to cook for his guests. I reckon he'd be UR and maybe W? What color identity do you think he'd be?

Yeah, that's my beef with it. It lets you play BW goodstuff and have a dangling threat of "don't tap out or I'll just end the game!" And even if the rest of the table holds up removal, the last chance to do so is (technically, if the ability were worded correctly) is the end of the Second Main. Which means they can play it again for 4.

So the table has to hold up two pieces of removal on each of your turns and fight through protection, when you inevitably Hatred yourself down to 1 life and "Oops, I'm the lowest life!"

It's a dumb wincon that's too slow for competitive and too unfun for regular.

How do you play a single card as two creatures?

Fuck if I know.
>>
>>49980628
For the first ability just put the artifacts into your hand, casting from reveal is possible but is wordier.

You can't nest activated abilities inside each other. Should be "if you do, you may put.."

"You get an emblem with..". I'd cut down on how many effects it tries to do per trigger.
>>
>>49980628
Optional clauses in brackets.
>Exile the top three cards of your library. You may cast artifact cards from among them until end of turn. [Put any nonartifact cards exiled this way on the bottom of your library in any order.]
>You may return an artifact you control to its owner's hand. If you do, you may put an artifact card from your hand onto the battlefield.
>You get an emblem with "Whenever an artifact enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control, then scry 1. Then, this emblem deals 1 damage to target creature or player.

First ability is wordy, but probably fine. Easier to leave things in exile than having to worry about separating them out. Alternatively, something like
>Reveal the top three cards of your library. You may cast an artifact card from among them. Put each card not cast this way onto the bottom of your library in any order.

I like the Master Transmuter effect on the -2.

The emblem adding counters isn't really a UR thing. Also, its a little underwhelming. Maybe
>You can emblem with "Whenever an artifact enters the battlefield under your control, draw a card."
Its simple but powerful.
>>
>>49980628
>>49980674

yeah, thought +1/+1 wasn't UR enough. I thought about adding white initially, because he likes to establish inns for planeswalkers as neutral zones. So being a community oriented character, who also enforces a neutral zone rule maybe I could add white and keep the +1/+1s?

The spirit behind the card was to get the emblem, then use his 1st and 2nd abilities to spam artifacts and artifact creatures until you get something huge or burn them out. Should I cut the scry then?
>>
>>49980628
PW type should exactly match their first name for parity with other PW cards.

>+1: Exile the top three cards of your library. Until end of turn, you may cast any artifact cards revealed this way.
I wouldn't allow the bit about putting them back into your library; that's way too good for what you're already getting.

>-2: Return an artifact you control to its owner's hand. If you do,...
Master Transmuter as a -2 is really good, but not sure if too good. Might be okay. Needs the "if you do" to ensure the bounce happens, I think, since in Master Transmuter the bounce is part of the cost.

>-7: You get an emblem with "Whenever an artifact enters the battlefield under your control, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control, scry 1, then ~ deals 1 damage to target creature or player."
This... too busy. The damage is awkward because it needs a source and making the emblem the source is strange, so it just comes off as odd when properly done. To me anyway. I'd simplify it, which will help cut down on the verbosity some. Frankly, I'd replace the counters with +1/+0 and haste until end of turn, and make the scry 2, then do away with the damage. Maybe a bit more usable?

His +1 is comparable to Tezzeret Agent of Bolas', only he allows you to cast more of them but doesn't get to dig as deep nor store a card to cast later, so I thought having to exile them or discard them permanently was too much of a downside.

The issue is exactly what I stated: you copied part of a cost into an ability. The way it resolves is different, so you need to account for that. MT forces you to bounce. The -2 does not, since it's not a cost. Just pointing that out. You even left in the colon from the cost.

Also how is this card representative of his lore? You said he likes to open inns on planes as "neutral ground" for other PWs. I don't really get that from him. He just seems like a generic artificer, as >>49980703 points out.

he likes to collect robots and recipes to use for his various inns. +1 is meant to be him looking for useful artifacts

-2 was him trading an artifact for something better (as a business man)

>Knight

>Monk
Same as before. Though I think the drawback should either be "attacking or blocking" OR "black or red" not both.

>Peacekeeper's Charm
Not a fan. I'd like it more if it could be removed by any player, but either that player gets a downside, or everyone else gets an upside. Like
>When a player attacks with one or more creatures, each other player creates two 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens with horsemanship. Sacrifice ~.
Oh yeah, tokens a created now.

I would make it like a wide version of grasp of phyresis.

When they are done, I'm doing blue rares right now.

He can be mono black, and for all of that I suggest a cmc of 5 or 6

Yup I even posted it in the legacy general.

How much for the cost on combat damage? Should it exile itself? Hexproof or Pro Creatures? Neither?

Weird, all that fixation on own instead of control, and this thing, caring a lot about things going to the grave but it has no black ? If this was ETB it would make a lot more sense.

>deliberation
>noncombat damage

>Individuality
So its like a Bazaar of Wonders + eradicate. Seems fine.

I'm at my job right now, otherwise I would just post a mock/concept. Again, I would the new emrakul format for being fairer.
>How much for the cost on combat damage?
4, like in mindslaver
>Should it exile itself?
Yes, imagine a reanimator deck around this guy, especially if he's monoblack.
> Hexproof or Pro Creatures?
>Neither?
I would go with indestructible since Regenerate is dead! Long live Indestructible!

>card
>for each Aura or Equipment you
Change it for permanent, not only it does mostly the same and its way shorter. Also make it legendary.

>>49988146
I prefer the usage of any number when more two, yet exhaustive writing the number of possibilities still widely common. Why he isn't a warrior or a barbarian ?

Cards are nontoken by definition. Also, if you own it, its going to your graveyard, so you can write it as
>Whenever another permanent card is put into your graveyard from anywhere, create a token that's a copy of that card.
>Whenever an instant or sorcery card is put into your graveyard from anywhere, copy that card. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost.
Also the amount of value this gives is insane. Sure, you lose black self-mill effects, but it doubles all your permanents when they die (including fetches!), doubles all your instants and sorceries, and lets you cast things for free when you mill or discard them.

Mental Note becomes "You may play the top four cards of your library without paying their mana costs. Draw two." for U.

>I prefer the usage of any number when more two, yet exhaustive writing the number of possibilities still widely common.
Not him, but Wizards has gone on record somewhere for explicitly dividing when the number is strictly three or less.

>4, like in mindslaver
I did ask how to make this without making it a worse version of Mindslaver. If this is just going to make a functional reprint, I'd rather just not make it at all.

So, how would you price both the mana cost for the card and the mana cost for the combat damage trigger if it uses Emrakul's version?

>I would go with indestructible since Regenerate is dead! Long live Indestructible!
Neither Regen nor Indestructible really work for this guy. Which is why I asked about Hexproof and Pro Creatures.

>Change it for permanent, not only it does mostly the same and its way shorter. Also make it legendary.
Good idea.

>I prefer the usage of any number when more two, yet exhaustive writing the number of possibilities still widely common.
Well, Magic cards write it out even when the number is three.

>Why he isn't a warrior or a barbarian ?
I felt the extra type makes the typeline too cluttered.

Questionable four colors, to suit the season. Whites tokens, blue and reds artifacts/instants/sorceries matter, and black's lifeloss.

Also cool art that I had to find a use for.
>>
>>49989201
>Which is why I asked about Hexproof and Pro Creatures.
In the end, both are protection.
>Hexproof
There's exactly 3 black cards with hexproof
>Pro Creatures
Black only get protection from its enemy colors, or the "iconic" creature type of those colors.

Black only has protection in regenerate or indestructible, if you really do not want them, add blue and/or white.

>So, how would you price both the mana cost for the card and the mana cost for the combat damage trigger if it uses Emrakul's version?

>pure black
For the casting cost I would make it something around 4B, and 2B for the ability.

>W or U
For the casting cost I would make it something around 3(W/U)B, and 1(W/U)B for the ability.
To be honest I would do it completely different. I would make it like a looter-ish type of creature, that instead of drawing cards it gets charge counters, remove 3 counters, sac it and you control target player.

Hmm, I already have a WU card that messes with turns. Part of me wants to make a mini-cycle out of this. Unsure how I'll do it with UR and GU though.

Not that guy, but I can't imagine many ways this'll play out. Either the first target accepts the destruction of whatever you need destroyed, or they respond by destroying a land or whatever, at which point the spiral of stupidity is on.

At least have a cost associated with copying (or specify nonland permanent) so its not quite so easy to descend into a destruction war.

The way Equinox does it, magic. It checks if it would damage a creature or player right now, if it resolved. It ignores the possibility of protection or other prevention/redirection effects.
