The name is somewhat misleading. It's not girly stupid sailor moon bullshit.
It's more of a cosmic horror setting with lots of lewd and hot girls to erp with in downtime between existential crises. Most of us haven't even watched magical girl anime and you don't need to either. Maybe Madoka but that's it.
You can even make your character non magical if you want to. Like to play someone whose magic is from power armor instead. You'd fit in perfectly there's a few characters like that already.

Hey there kid, have you considered using Blood Magic?

Blood Magic lets you do that at a low cost of 1 HP:MP. This is great for you because you can only get 1 MP per point of MAG, but VIT gives you 2 points of HP and half a soak! Never worry about running out of MP, great on warriors and mages alike.

You sure can. Right at the beginning of the fight is a great time to start using blood magic, since you'll regenerate the lost HP back by the time your opponent gets through your soak.

Many healing spells specify that you can't cast them with Blood Magic. Bummer! But what you can do is cast your offensive spells with Blood Magic, saving your mana to heal yourself with. Sweet! Oh, and note that there are healing options which don't prohibit Blood Magic. Healing Artifact, for example.

Nope! If you're worried about the HP loss, remember how easy it is to lose HP when you're out of soak (unless you have Blood Magic + Teleport). A couple HP won't make a difference; if you're out of mana and soak, you might lose without Blood Magic. With it, you have a chance to launch a strong counterattack!

Older spec spells had a streak of being created by a faggot moderator that wanted his spec to have a better toolkit than others. Sadly not all of that shit has been removed or replaced, although there's been a good push to remove that content. If you haven't looked in some months its worth checking now. There's also alternate spell trees for most specs.
With the new pdfs by Flashdrive bringing specs to the forefront of the community's attention for review we should, with luck, see the balances changes that have been sorely needed.
