Hi /wip! I recently bought Silver Tower and started to paint the Arcanists from it. Problem is that I haven't done skin tones in ages and I need your advice. Is this ok for skin? And if you have other things you want to point out I'm more than happy to hear them!

Base is going to changed to the ones in the Shattered dominion box. This one doesn't fit theme too well.
>>
>>49856768
>Is this ok for skin?

It looks good, but maybe a little chalky on the highlights. Any chance you might choose a thinned-down wash to maybe take some of the edge off?
>>
Anyone made any custom or kitbashed leman russ tanks?
Preferably if you did something about the lack of any track protection, or made any work into making it sleeker
>>
What would you guys like to see? What issues do you have with painting, sculpting, casting?

As long as it's legal (and won't get me sacked), I will try to provide.

How do I make a Russ more mini Baneblade esque and less shitty box like?

What's the closest thing to good old Devlan Mud nowadays? Is the current brown Citadel watch as good?
>>
>>49857205
In terms of colour and consistency I believe that Army Painter Quickshade Strong Tone Ink is the closest, Agrax Earthshade is a little lighter in tone, and doesn't pool as well.
>>
>>49857205

Army Painter Strong Tone ink and the Citadel successor Agrax Earthshade are both pretty class.

AP is a bigger bottle and cheaper, but more clearly intended for basic painters to basecoat their models and then basically drown them in the stuff.

How can I spice up my s̶e̶x̶ ̶l̶i̶f̶e̶ bases, without too much effort?

Just an example, basically sand painted Scorched Earth, given a light drybrush and then some static grass in patches.

Maybe some larger stones in grey, and some of those tufts of light yellow long grass?

>>
>>49857274
I do not entirely agree, the dips are meant to drown models, but the ink is very much designed to be similar to the old GW versions.

Do that, and most importantly, drybrush up to lighter colours, the sand's very lacking in contrast there.

What's the second or third biggest IG forces after Cadia? I bought some Genestealy cultists and I need to give them IG garb but I Cadians are boring.

>Is it best to give them contrasting colours to the rest of the army?

No, if anything you want to use the colourscheme to unify the rather different models.

It's one of my pet hates that, I think we all did it as a kid where we made our Terminator squad a different colour to the rest of the army for no real reason.

>>
>>49857516
Honestly I can't see Catachans or DKOK would be very susceptible to cults
Honestly Cadian models are probably the best and most versatile to use, they dont have to be cadians though, and you can paint em however
You can also use whatever kits GW or FW have or w/e
>>
>>49857660
Ok I'll just use the standard bodies then. Maybe DOW can give me some inspiration on schemes. Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>49857701
I dont wanna stop you doing something more adventurous if that's what you want, I think you should enjoy your army more than anything tbqh
Just reckon basic bitches are better cause more availability and price
Though if you dont like the aesthetic as much you still might wanna look at the other options, though it'll probably be more challenging and expensive
>>
>>49857753
It's fine. I get your point. You're right about the variety available. Maybe I could do some body swaps. The genestealer cult unit is generic so I guess using any IG works pretty well for it.

Help me fix this email to gw about their brush quality so I can get some kind of compensation for ruining my money on their base brushes:
Dear Games Workshop:

I have been involved in the warhammer 40k hobby for about a year and a half now, almost 2 years, and during this time I have bought mand brushes, some of which unfortunately were your base brushes. Regardless of the size (I've bought 1 large, 2 medium and 3 small) and regardless of the care I put into these brushes (mind you I care for all brushes from you similarly, and to a great standard of care), the base brushes need to be replaced after about 4 painting sessions. At the price I'm paying for them, which is msrp, it seems unreasonable that I get barely any use out of them before they become unusable.

I've attached some pictures of the most recently purchased base brushes, which I just stopped using because of its condition. Also attached is a comparison of the other brushes I bought all around the same time as the first medium base brush I threw out, and you can see they all still retains their shape without any external assistance, barring my medium layer brush which I've had to use as a base brushes for multiple occasions.

The main reason I am emailing you is to ask the following:

Was this intended to be how they end up or am I doing something wrong?

Do they need to be cared for in any special way other paint brushes normally don't receive?

Is there any reason I should buy more of your base brushes in the future if I'm doomed to replace them shortly after the purchase anyway?

This has become quite frustrating and I'm considering dollar craft brushes as an alternative, I'd rather spend a week training myself to compensate for their poor brush quality than spend seven dollars bi-weekly on a new brush whenever I buy new kits.

Don't get me wrong, I love the other brushes I have, I thoroughly enjoy them and have no issue using them.

I don't know what else to write

At my store, at least, there was little appreciation of my Second Edition Battle Bunker (visible in top right corner of >>49860962). If you're going to include something classic like that in your get-up, make it look at least comparable to the modern plastic 40K terrain. That's what'll be on uvva ladz boards (pic related).

I hate to be negative, but yes, yes it was. That's really all there is to it. I have another Magos, but she's from Raging Heroes and I couldn't bring her to Armies on Parade. Two weeks before the contest, I bought a Shadowseer and a Techpriest Enginseer and played around with the two kits until I came up with that. I purposefully wanted something kind of eldritch and preferably female to contrast with the crawling, scary Magos Dominus model.

How do you do those red highlights on the armor? Is it just a layer of the lighter color that you then fill in the center of the armor with the darker color or do you just do it like you do edge highlights?
>>
>>49857356
Yeah, sorry buddy. Im glad you've got colors on everything, but every time I see your tanks from a distance they look unfinished. Any extra color or highlighting you could put on there would work wonders. Your infantry are fine (base em) .

The tanks are large with those big flat surfaces so they can't get away with flat pure white. Go with light grey/off white then highlight with white. Maybe do a color stripe, some transfers, or get tape and do camo.

They're both fairly old kits and the quality is pretty much the same, it depends on price and which aesthetic you prefer. Mouldlines on them aren't great and a lot of the sprue gates are fairly awkwardly placed, especially on the heads, but they fit together fine.

I have a whole bunch of Night Goblins because of the Battle for Skull Pass box from a few years back, you can get them on ebay for very little money.

I went with the classic goblins because I'm going for a Mongol/Steppe Raider theme.

NEVER do this if it can be avoided. Next to nothing in real life is true black. You're better off painting something that supposed to be black a dark grey and then shading, highlighting, etc.

>That blue "camo"
First off? Where is this tank hiding itself? I'm guessing you were going for an urban look. Now, with all camo (and you should look up tutorials on this) should be pretty solid with hard edges.
>That drybrushing
Smart move drybrushing instead of shitty edge highlights. However, you applied this drybrush very sloppily. WAY to heavy in some places. WAY too light in others.

Thanks, you're a big help. Here's a pic of all of them together. Without stripping and starting over, how would I go about minor improvements to all of them? I know I can thin my paints more from here, I can add some shading and highliting to the tracks, I can dry brush more the less dry brushed areas.

But things like how I accedentally painted over my shade for the blue for the most part, having my entire army based back, etc all seem like it would be difficult to do other than pulling off the pain and starting over. How do you do heat weathering? Like the flame thrower part? I did that for one in this pic and will need to do that again.

>>
>>49861194
No, it was not. It just needs a little more work :) Smooth metal can look damn cool, but you need to properly prep your minis. Any gaps or mould lines are going to stick out like an erection in speedos. Liquid green is great for gap filling, and Warhammer TV recently did a short but sweet example of how to use it properly. I use fine grit sandpaper for my mould lines, to get a smoother finish than any of the files I own.

From there, you move onto painting. You've got a nice base, but it lacks definition and depth. This is where washes come in! Just a straight up nuln oil will flow into every nook and crack and really show off the sculpt. If you want to keep the metal looking polished you can even use nuln oil gloss now. Metal also reflects the surrounding colours, so coloured washes and glazes can work wonders but are a bit more advanced. Like if you did martial red ground for your base, you could use a red wash or glaze on all the surfaces facing downward.

Finally highlights are important for metal, I use matte washes and glazes to take away some of the shine when I paint metal, and then highlight with the smoothest and brightest silvers I've got which are usually the vallejo model air steel, chrome or silver. It's the same principle if you've used gloss washes, the matte/gloss contrast is a personal preference for me. It's important not to go overboard however, just fine dots and short lines on all the most raised portions. Think the edges of the spine ridges as an example.
>>
>>49863968
They're looking solid so far, smooth coats of paint and nice contrast of different materials. It just needs some more work though mate, it looks at the moment like you've blocked in all the base colours and then given is one big dark wash and now you've just got the long slog of picking out all the edges and details.

Took me 3 hours to get this right. I took everything you guys said and put it into play. Took my time and used oxide as the base and built up from that with multiple thin layers. Just wanted to say thank you for helping me get to this point. I love this ship and how it looks and you guys made me focus on breaking bad habits and being patient with my painting.

I've had the assassinorum box since last christmas and finally got around to putting it together so I wouldn't have to admit I left a gift untouched for a whole year when christmas rolls around again. These are the first finished models, mostly done on autopilot.

Please forgive that one gap I didn't fill, for I am lazy and have no putty.

Posted my Orks a while ago and I got told they were a bit too dark. So I decided to paint some Evil Sunz using only glazes (and a bit of paint). Came out pretty well.

Debating what to do with the straps and belts. Think brown might just blend in with the red, so might do a bright yellow or a black.

It's an interesting color choice for the scrap metal riveted on there. But, you really need to go back and paint the rivets on the colored plates and do some highlights. The model looks flat as it is now, which is too bad because all the colors you have used seems like a cool idea to create a slap-shod, orky model

I've just bought a bunch of ravenwing bikers from ebay, most of them are missing their twin linked boltguns so I've purchased several of these sets of the corvus blackstar bolters to use - does anyone have any suggestions on what I could add for more detail to the sides of them, besides slapping purity seals on. I'm planning on building a box magazine/mount for each out of plasticard and filling the holes/shaving the nubs accordingly.

Well after the other comments were given I tried painting a red one, but it looked nowhere near as good as the silver does. I get that it's an unusual choice but they are aliens after all.

I'm very happy to have had your comment. I think with improvements you've suggested it can look a lot better. I am going to buy some red wash tonight and give it a go. I never considered putting it on just one side as a reflection.

If I paint the bases red, what kind of flock should I use?

In retrospect I decided I'd rather magnetize my Assault Terminators' arms since I managed to clear room in my list to give them hammers but alteady have them with claws. Has anyone here ever successfully taken a fully painted and assembled Terminator's arms off and added magmets without the need to destroy the shoulders or having to buy new shouder plates?

Was thinking of cutting the arms off just below the shoulder pad, doing the same for the hammer arms and sticking the magnets in there. Would that plan work without destroying their paintjobs?

Is it just me or are nids easier to give a standard paint job that looks good? The traditional base, wash, highlight, varnish just seems like such less work and looks better than trying to paint something that's actually difficult.

I'd say use the Chaos Daemons rules, because not only do tyranids suck at the moment ruleswise but also they lost all of their unit upgrades, daemons are much more flexible for what you want.

They look a bit busy.
Especially the guys with blue hands seem to have too many color next to each other. The danger stripes, purple, blue and orange all next to each other is a bit much imo.

Painting the chitinous hands in a flesh color instead might fix this.
Either way I feel like there are too many strong colors next to each other, you need to get rid of at least one or at least tone down the saturation so you got some kind of visual focus.

I like the white orange scheme for these guys though. Looks really good on the guys with flesh colored hands.
