I think the novel underscores and explains the characterization that was laid out in WoW for Arthas and Jaina.
The reason why people like that part of the lore because it touches upon the unrealized potential and the downfall, and the regret that comes with it - anyone with a hint of romantic/idealistic inclination eats that up, sighing about what could have been. It's a perfect tragedy.

I agree with you on both points. Blizzard has some pretty sloppy writing at times, but Xe'ra's line seems particularly terrible. Especially since, other than that (and the Warrior stuff), Legion's stories are pretty solid, IMO.

Plus, like I've said previous times, Xe'ra is literally the only thing campaigning THIS HARD for Illidan to be some kind of messiah figure. Not even the Illidari shill for him that much, and the Illidan novel continues the theme of him being a pretty bad person, albeit a well-meaning one.
