Illidan Stromrage waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were Demons in Black Rook Hold. He didn’t see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Kurtalos Ravencrest were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
Illidan was a demon hunter for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the Druids and he said to Malfurion “I want to be Druid.”
Malfurion said “No! You will BE KILL BY DEMONS”
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the Black Rook Hold he knew there were demons.
“This is Jarod Shadowsong” the vision crackered. “You must fight the demons!”
So Illidan gotted his Warglaives and blew up the wall.
“HE GOING TO KILL US” said the demons
“I will shoot at him” said the Pitlord and he fired the shadowbolt volley. Illidan fel rushed at him and tried to blew him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
“No! I must kill the demons” he shouted
Maiev said “No, Illidan. You are the demons”
And then WoW was shit.

Because anything the Nelves have resembling leadership/figures of authority is fucked up, to put it mildly:

>Tyrande is a millennia-old warrior with a short temper. Gets confused by any warfare tactic that isn't "sit on trees, ambush enemies with archers"
>Malfurion, like Thrall since Cataclysm, is a self-declared neutral party that can't stop hanging around one of the big 2 factions. Not that it matters, since he spends all of his time sleeping
>Cenarius died millennia ago, got resurrected in Cata, and disappeared for years only to get NIGHTMARED.com by Xavius the moment he set a hoof outside

Oh, nothing much, just Remnant from RWBY being on the other end of the Warcraft 'verse.
The moon? There was an Old God there, and Sargeras cleaved it in between the first finding of the Old Gods and talking to the other Titans about it.

The Grimm? They're basically Sha, dropped on the planet when the moon broke and the Old God's blood fell onto the planet.

Aura? It's Spirit, the fifth element, the same stuff Monks call Chi. It's in everything non-Grimm there because there's way too much of it.

Dust? There's so much overabundance of Spirit there that the Elements are all asleep. Dust is literally solidified sleeping Elemental. They're using crystallized Elementals as gunpowder.

Salem? She's a high-tier Shadow Priest.

Faunus? A slight mutation of Flesh-cursed Vrykul-alikes, same as the humans. Probably the last time one of Algalon's kin visited he grabbed a few and took them there.

The weapons? Nothing a Gnome couldn't create.

Why don't they use the Light or the Arcane? They don't know about the Light and Remnant doesn't have a baby titan in it to bleed Arcane. They also don't know about Fel.

And yes, I know it's dumb.

This
you step on the planet side of the dark portal and when the game finishes loading you are on the other side of it.

It was incredible.

Aside from the War of Shifting Sands, most of that would fall into the "stealth archers in the forest" tactic. Post-Sundering night elves don't seem to have been particularly expansionistic: they seems to have mostly stayed in the forests of norther Kalimdor (Ashanvale, Windterspring, Moonglade, Hyjal etc.), plus the one settlement in Feralas. You don't really see any notable night elf presence in areas that aren't covered with forests. So they probably just ignored any guilboars and centaurs as long as they stayed away from the forests, and stealth archered them to death if they did. Satyrs also seem to primarily found in the forests, rather than places like the Barrens or Tanaris.

War of the Shifting Sands seems to be the only notable exception, as C'thun and the qiragi were a big enough threat that the night elves actually had to go on the offensive and deal with them before they could grow in power and launch an invasion on the rest of Kalimdor.
>>
>>49706517
Wasn't Staghelm in command for the WotSS instead of Tyrande?
>>
>>49706517

Forget expansionist, the Night Elves weren't even interested in rebuilding the civilization they had. 10,000 years and virtually all of their holdings outside of Hyjal were still in ruins. We don't even know for sure when most of the Nelf settlements we see in WoW were built, many of them could have been after WC3.

Which makes sense to an extent. If you're immortal and all your men are asleep, why bother with the trouble of maintaining a civilization when you can just be immortal gargoyles watching from the trees for demons?

their society was also quite shaken up from the war. Nearly all their men were now becoming druids while women became the religious police patrolling the forest with the ancients.
Even their buildings took on a more militaristic approach.
I suppose they became more harmonized with nature and built small and sustainable ecosystems rather than big huge cities.

I like TBC's "weirder" tone, but I feel it would've made more sense to release Wrath first.

The last major content tpath in vanilla before the TBC pre-patch was Naxxramas and the Scourge invasion, whoch would have served as a pretty obvious springboard for launching a counterattack on Northrend (instead of going to Outland to kick Illidan's ass, and then remembering the Lich King is a thing when there's another Scourge invasion).
Plus tone-wise Wrath is less of a departure from vanilla. For the most part what you encounter is fairly standard fantasy stuff (undead, giants, dragons, more undead, undead giants and dragons...), with the notable exception of Ulduar, but that's pretty contained to the one zone and to me at least managed to not feel all that out of place (we've already established the titans were an ancient and very advanced race of space demigods, so them having super-advanced magitech didn't feel particularly odd). Most of the grean you get in Wrath is also very down to earth looking, downright boring even for the levelling gear.

Doing Wrath first and then TBC would probably made more sense for the flow of the story (at end of vanilla Scourge attacks and we go and deal with the Lich King, defeating on of the biggest threats on Azeroth. But then the Dark Portal opens and we'll have to go stop the Legion from invading through it), and style-wise (rather than going from the most down to earth vanilla, to crystal laser battleaxes, to back to more traditional fantasy stuff, you'd have the stuff in Ulduar to introduce the concept that fancy magitech is a thing in the universe, and then go all out with the dimension ships, glowing crystals, energy beings and stuff).
>>
>>49706578
Wait, wasn't it AU Maraad the one that died? Also, related, do we have two Garonas now? (Iirc seeing her while questing in Twilight highlands, did she survive the expac?)
>>49706590
Nazgrim is based and all, but he's also gone insane.
>Implying Varok Saurfang ain't the best.
>>
>>49706618
>Wait, wasn't it AU Maraad the one that died?
nope. Maraad was the leader of the Alliance forces on Draenor if there's a Horde commander
>>
>>49706618

No, it was our Maraad that died. I think AU Maraad was still a kid, or even dead. We never see him. There was a theory that Yrel actually WAS parallel Maraad for a while.

We have two Garonas, as Original Garona is one of the Uncrowned in the Rogue class hall. But AU Garona probably stayed on Draenor.
>>
>>49706606
I agree with you. We could've had Ulduar be a Quel'Danas esque final patch, and it sets up "shit guys there's space ships" to account for the Tempest Keep thing. We get our first laser axe and go through the portal.
>>
>>49706559
I think so. IIRC his son died in the war, and that's the reason he became such a bitter asshole.

>>49706574
>>49706586
Post-War of the Ancients night elf architecture is completely different from pre-war. Before the war they built those big marbel towers and temples you see in runs all over Kalimdor, while newer night elf construction is mostly made from wood (some stone as well, but far simpler in style). You see a lot of the newer nigh elf buildings in Ashenvale, Moonglaed and other neaby zones, which makes sense given that that's where they have been mostly living since the Sundering (IIRC, the big-ish night elf town in Ahenvale was canonically their capital until after WC3 when they made Teldrassil. It's probably supposed to be bigger "in real life" than in the game, where it has like 10 houses).

>>49706618
AU Maraad never appeared in the game, so there's a pretty good chanse he died before WoD expansion began. The Maraad in the game is MU Maraad, who'se part of the force storming the Dark Portal along with the player character in the beginning of the WoD storyline.
>>
>>49706661

Still, you can't deny that the Nelves didn't even resettle more than, say, half of their previous territory (not counting what was underwater of course.) When WoW launched the eastern half of Ashenvale was almost totally uninhabited by Nelves other than a military outpost that was almost certainly set up after WC3 to resist Horde aggression. Azshara didn't have a single Night Elf outpost anywhere. And we have no idea when Feathermoon Stronghold was built, and it was their only settlement in Ferelas, everything else being ruins or under Highborne control. Same goes for their little outpost in Desolace. I don't think the Nelves even had any real settlement in Winterspring, Starfall Village is just one building!

If we reasonably assume those were either build or resettled after the Third War, then the southern-most territory that the Nelves had actually rebuilt and lived in actively after the Sundering was the Northern tip of Stonetalon. Which means that in rough terms, they'd left about half of their surviving lands basically untouched and certainly unsettled. Half of Ashenvale, Hyjal, Moonbrook, Felwood and Darkshore are the only places with signs of permanent post-Sundering rebuilding. Huge stretches of land that by all accounts is theirs are totally empty except for the decaying remains of what was once there.
>>
>>49706768
half of their population was hibernating for a long time, and they were continuously on the vigil for demonic and arcane taint. I wonder how much of pre sundering NELF architecture was built via arcane means.

I think Blizzard is trying to avoid "demon fatigue". One of the recurring complaints about WoD was "too much orcs" (no, shit, the expansion called "Warlords of Draenor", where you go to the orc homeworld of Draenor to fight the orchish horde led by the titular orc warlords of Draenor, has too many orcs in it?), so now they're giving us lots of other things to do as well, rather than just throw demons at us. In fact, there's been surprisingly little demons so far. The only zone, aside from Broken Shore/Tomb of Sargeras that really has a major Legion presence is Azuna, and even there it's mostly confined to two islands (Vault of Wardens and the place the Illidari are camped at). Highmountain and Stormheim has some of the native population converted to the Legion's side but not much demons, Val'shara has the Nightmare which is used by the now Legion-aligned Xavius (he's switched sides more than Cho'gal at this point) but was originally made by the Old Gods and has their aesthetics, and Suramar has demons patrolling the streets but only that one Legion hold where you see their own architecture.

In any case, Gul'dan and the Legion will feature heavily in the Suramar raid added in 7.1, and we're sure to get a full demon-themed raid eventually with the Tob of Sargeras.

Maraad was well old enough to be an adult. Remember, MU Maraad was already a soldier in Shattrath the first time the Horde rose up against them.
I would have liked a quest where Yrel goes to try and find AU Maraad because she still lusts after MU Maraad's dick.
Only for AU Maraad to turn out to be gay.

For an expansion called "Legion", there is indeed surprisingly little of the Legion. Even in Azuna they're pretty much a sidenote, with the main storyline of the zone having more to do with the naga.
Also, despite being the hot new class and having Illidan's face plaster all over the box, demon hunters also aren't really up to much. Their biggest involvement is barely holding off the demon attack in Azuna, and beyond that they have two other smaller camps in Azuna and one in Highmountain, plus a few solitary NPCs in other zones (including Marius from Marius and Tedh, who show up in every zone by Suramar). DKs didn't really have much presence in Wrath until Icecrown Glacier, either, but at least they had a faction you could gain rep with and were involved in a lot of quests in that zone.

>>49708333
Destrolocks are actually the unsung heroes of the expansion. They steal the scepter of Sargeras, which the Legion was planning to use in a ritual to open tons of portals as big as the one in the Tomb of Sargeras. Sealing the portal in ToS is in itself a massive enough undertaking that the entire expansion basically revolves around it (that's the main reason we go to the Broken Isles, as we need to find the artefacts that are the only thing that can close the portal), so imagine what would've happened if the Legion could've opened dozens of portals like that wherever they pleased.
>>
>>49708715

Azeroth would have exploded much like Draenor did when a shitton of random ass giant portals to other worlds were tore open.

That's literally all you're good for besides MotW. Not to mention mana-conservation is a trait most priests don't know about until Razorgore.

>>
>>49709889
That was only really possible for the same reason playing druids sucked in vanilla. In fact, it was a direct result of druids being terrible. Very few people played them (there were less A+H druids on most servers than there were shamans, who were Horde only and not especially numerous), so the druid community was smaller and more tightly knit than with other classes, and there was a sense of sharing each others hardships (which led to stuff like the druid code, ie. "Durid must always HALP eachoter!"). It lasted in some form after druids were partially fixed and became somewhat more popular, but finally died when in TBC the amount of druids suddenly increased by an order of magnitude due to them being really good for arena pvp.

What I do miss in general from vanilla is the sense of community.
I remember way back when I played in vanilla, there was this one really good raiding guild, whose main tank was also the High Warlord (highest pvp rank on Horde side). Guy was called Fahzd or something. Tauren warrior. Pretty much everybody on Horde side (probably Alliance as well) knew him.
Once when I was screwing around on my warlock and decided to swim up to that one island off the coast of Feralas to see what's there, I ran into him and a few other people in his guild. They were doing a part of the AQ gate questline, and since they didn't have a warlock they asked me to help summon some of their guildmates (back then there was no summoning closet, and each summon cost one soul shard, so it was a pain in the ass). Some time later, I was in Org, and noticed him standing in the the pvp hall, looking all majestic (read: semi-afking while waiting for the BG to start) in his High Warlord gear. There was a low level orc and troll jumping in front of him, waving and trying to elict as response from him, and I just walked up to him and said hi, which got him to wave back and say hi. And the two lowbies were amazed that I got the legendary warlord to speak to me.
>>
>>49711127
While I generally like how WoW is now, the crossrealm systems really destroyed the server community feel. Not everyone on your server as actually part of your server, and the chances of you ending up in the same dungeon group as someone else on your server is very small.

I do understand why they implemented the crossrealm stuff, especially for LFG and LFR, but there's not much of a sense of community anymore. And perhaps even worse, there's barely any consequences for quitting an instance group for dirtbag reasons, because they can't pass around that you're a bad egg. Although, really, there should be mechanical consequences for dropping from a group.
>>
>>49712141
>I do understand why they implemented the crossrealm stuff, especially for LFG and LFR
Is it because they can't handle the bad press of server merges?
>>
>>49712168
More because without it, LFG/LFR would take hours, instead of only about 10~ minutes.

That may be part of it, though.
>>
>>49712141
Yeah. Currently the only person on my server/servers (they merged a few low-pop servers together) is one asshole who spams the trade chat and everybody hates.

LFG/LFR is definitely improvement from having to sit in Org/IF all day spamming "LFM Strat UD" or whatever, but all the cross-realm stuff also removed the sense of community.
>>
>>49712141
>>49712366

It astounds me to this day that it was so completely unfathomable to people that maybe, just maaaaybe, not all of the Sentinels were female and not all of the druids were male to start with, but apparently the majority of WoW players was too stupid to understand that just because you have only one model to represent an archer in Warcraft 3, it doesn't follow that all night elf units must be female by default.

I mean Blizzard just did the economically smart thing: Create a one-size-fits-all representation that's simple enough that player imagination has sufficient room to fill the gaps according to their preferences.

Now they had to go with their own consumerbase's retardation and are too far down the rabbithole.
>>
>>49727597
Unless I'm mistaken (or it has been retconned, which amounts to basically the same thing), in Night Elf society, the men were tasked with religion/spiritual well being (a.k.a. Druidism), while the women formed the bulk of the military forces and priestesses of Elune. With WoW, things changed a bit (hell, the druid in vanilla's cinematic is a female nelf), but, lorewise, the majority of druids can probably be assumed to be male, hence the "all the men were sleeping" jokes.

I just figured that, at least in part, the druids were not sleeping 100% of the time, and did wake on occasion either in times of need, or simply to spend a few years with loved ones.
>>
>>49727806
>>49727839
The Chronicles retconned that the druids were asleep all the time for 10'000 years into being awake for short periods of time, although I'm not sure anymore on Malfurion.

My point is:

Because warcraft 3 had male models for druids and female ones for the sentinels, the community has drawn conclusion that all druids must be male and all sentinels must be female, although it could just as well be that blizzard just made this design choice becaue it was flashy but didn't necessarily represent the actual night elf society at the time and/or they didn't have the technology to do this representation justice.

It would have been the easiest step to address the sudden change of gender ratio in both military and druidism by vanilla with declaring "We didn't have the resources at the time, but there definitely were male sentinels and female druids!", but Blizzard continued to dig their own graves. Of all the retcons, this one would have been the only actually sensible one and they didn't do it. And I bet that it was the fanbase's stubborn incapability to compute that not everything you see in-game is to be taken at facevalue, especially with the generally stylised design of Warcraft.

Man, I really have to finish reading Chronicles. I think I stopped around the Mantid bit at the beginning of Chapter/Part III.

The other Korean one is all sorts of fucked.
>>
>>49728201
Man, this picture still makes no sense to me even twelve years after vanilla.

First of all, Tauren were much more composed and well postured than this picture would indicate, at least in most canonical sources from blizzard at the time of the warcraft 3 - WoW transition period. They were far too non-bestial despite being the only "beastrace" at the time. Also, mostly due to the whole Cenarion Circle druid friendship thing and the fact the two races had lived in relative harmoney up to this point, having a Tauren attack a Night Elf like a rapehorse is just contradictory to the canon and is confusing me.

I would have expected a troll to be this murderous towards a night elf, actually a Warsong Orc would have made the most sense overall.

If Tauren and night elf fought, it would make much more sense in my book that the two would have an honourable stand-off with manly tears shed.
>>
>>49728305
>Those canines
From my body rises an arousal that will shake the foundations of the world.
>>
>>49728376
Tauren are a whole species.
Not only do you have whole evil factions of them, they vary by individual too.

Consider mr. Smite.
>>
>>49728376
The picture is weird all-around.

Hell, the girl in it really doesn't even look like a night elf. Fennec fox ears, light skin, blonde-ish hair. One might assume she was supposed to be a blood elf, except that they were barely a thing in vanilla WoW and, again the fox ears.

The whole thing clearly suffers from artistic license from someone who isn't even remotely familiar with the franchise.
>>
>>49728376
I think the most you can say about the picture is that Koreans have a monster fetish.

It is fortunate that mmo-induced suffrage gave shadowmeld to male elves as well.

by the way there is an in game archaeological find that shows how the nelf society embraced the traditionally incorrect job pairings (priest and druidess) although I don't recall if this sex revolution occurred after archimonde's setback at hyjal...
>>
>>49728510
Fine, the written evidence supports this rigid split. I give.

My only argument here is: What if the Sentinels are a singular corps of the night elf military? That would mean the entirety of the military would utilise male soldiers in some form, possibly as hunters and archers.

I simply fail to see how, when WoW came around, it was apparently impossible to count on the player's suspension of disbelief to introduce a more sensible societal concept right off the bat and continue with the mindset that an entire race had been so divided by a religious schism for 10'000 years.
>>
>>49728661
>would utilise male soldiers in some form, possibly as hunters and archers.
Why as hunters and archers when the two most iconic parts of the night elven female warriors are called huntresses and archers?

>I simply fail to see how, when WoW came around, it was apparently impossible to count on the player's suspension of disbelief to introduce a more sensible societal concept right off the bat and continue with the mindset that an entire race had been so divided by a religious schism for 10'000 years.

I mean it would have been much better for Blizzard to make an official statement when they announced Nelves as playable race in WoW declaring that the strict gender division from Warcraft 3 was not actually to be taken at face value and that they officially retconned it in WoW instead of expanding on a piece of lore that was already wonky and could only lead to awkward bends and twists in the future.
>>
>>49730191
>I mean it would have been much better for Blizzard
Better for Blizzard?
How?
Would they have earned more money if they had done that?
Maybe. I don't know and I don't think I can know.

>on a piece of lore that was already wonky
How is a culture having different gender roles wonky?

>and could only lead to awkward bends and twists in the future.
If you're trying to make a bland mmo and cater to the snowflake who really wants a female druid sure. Wasn't a problem for blizzard anyway.

Advocating for them to retcon even more is pretty disgusting to be frank.

Ironically, its all Varian fault.

Varian declared war and that was basically a big politic hit on Thrall. Dude tried almost everything to control the Orcs and keep the Horde passive to achieve peace. And then the human King almost literally spat on him and declared war anyway. If the "peace" thing was hard to sell for the orcs, it become impossible.

The orcs wanted a strong leader, one that brings respect, one that wants to put humans on their places and Garrosh was a big name on that time. Thrall just give up. He was not wanted a leader anyway, and Garrosh could also fuck himself. He even challenged Thrall before the WoTLK expansion for the title of warchief.... Too late to figured out that maybe he could be a shit leader.

And the funny thing is that the game just ignored all that. Metzan wanted the Alliance to feel like THE GOOD GUYS (his words, not mine) and then Garrosh become Hitler, Varian died and no one touches the fact that he shares some guilt of a war that he started alone.

I dont know if the books address this issue, so far Anduin was the only one that said his father did a shit thing.

Pre-WoW, all druids were supposed to be male, although I don't think all males were supposed to be druids. They don't really seem numerous enough to make up the entire male night elf population. Significant enough amount of males were druids, though, that the primary fighting force of the night elves was predominantly female.

Blizz writers couldn't have handled a noble savage race anyway. They love making every race except orcs and humans appear arrogant just so the orcs and humans can look better despite being the "youngest" and "weakest" race. Same shit that happens in every fantasy world ever.

Not noble savage - Savage nobles!

I don't want anything to do with shallow muh honour native stereotypes running around in loincloth and cluttering bones being Dindu Nuffin and shedding single manly tears rolling down their cheeks at the sight of muh despoiled nature homeland.

I want creatures who carry themselves with pride and elegance that befits those of accomplishment, only to drop all pretense of aloofness and indulge primal fury in the anticipation of a kill, who will howl at the sky in sheer ferocity, who will viciously chase their prey and who will rip and tear through their enemies in battle without remorse and false restraint. I want to see how creatures of grace and beauty burst into unfathomable rage and terrify all who thought it unthinkable that such beings could ever be such animals.

I want to see how people's worlds crumble as they see that underneath the air of fragility and courtesy sleeps a wiry predator ready to wade in guts and blood and mud and shit.

Rip and Tear - Until it's done! And then, they wash it all off, put their fine clothes and jewelry back on, comb their hair and sit together in social circles discussing philosophy while having a nice glass of fine wine and a light snack consisting of berries with sweetened cream.

And then when they retreat to the boudoir, a loving couple will fuck like monkeys, biting with their fanged teeth, smelling, tasting, feeling, growling and hissing and wincing at the unrelenting passion until they give out in animal climax.

Is that so hard? Is it so hard to make this happen?

Except night elves were never ever presented as being "refined" or such, they were straight up barbarians in WC3. They didn't even have cities then, just villages and trees. What you describe only happened with WoW when they were suddenly this city-dwelling race like any other
>>
>>49738366
Straight up barbarians, yes, of course!

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm fucking tired of roidraging superniggers to be the only ones who are allowed to be savage murderers and that I would love a race that is more nimble but not any less violent as opposed to all slenderly designed races to automatically be florette flourishing faggots or spend all day polishing thin-bladed daggers with poison as if they were rubbing their dicks.

Funny because this is almost exactly what the night elves were in WC3. Replace "muh honor" with "muh trees" or "muh goddess." Replace the cluttered bones with twigs and leaves. Keep the loincloths, keep the dindu nuffin attitude (starts shit and proceeds to get rekt, continues crying about it for years after that they dindu nuffin), and the single (feminine) tear rolling down their cheeks at the sight of muh despoiled nature homeland.
