I've been thinking of making a custom dreadnought with the power spear from the Librarian dread and the power fist with a thumb from the Venerable dread.

Sadly they're both for the left arm, is there any kit that includes a right handed one or do I've to make my own?
>>
Update on my neophytes, thoughts? Not sure if I pulled off the hazard stripes on the guns. Also the basing I was going for a 'moonscape' type of base, is it working?
>>
Does anybody know where one can buy a dragon mini from? Seem hard to find, GW's options are kinda lame.

Pretty damn near perfect, whats the basing?

>>49680809

>>49680977

Just a tip, don't bother with the eyes. Stripes on the guns look fine, do not need stripes on the straps, not sure why magazines have a yellow base? I just assumed base was ruined city.
>>
>>49680883

Why not just chop the power spear off below the block that determines if its a left or right arm and attach it to a right arm block after you removed the assault cannon or whatever?
>>
>>49681078
As in don't bother with the pupils?
>>
>>49681128

No, eyes in general, unless you have a surgeons hand, they can ruin a model.

If you watch / look at any GW guide, 8/10 they don't even bother with it

>>49681164
Note that it also depends on the scale of the model. 32mm models tend to have significantly larger heads, so eyes become more feasible. And if you try painting something like Super Dungeon Explore or Arcadia Quest then eyes become mandatory.

>>49680804

I particularly like that you gave them a variety of skintones, it looks so much better than when people make units of clones.

So after collecting over 3000pts of Dark Angels I decided it was time to get troops.

Here I am with the B@C box with 30 Tacticals.

I am priming them today and have the chests and legs together then all the other bits separate.

Is it best to keep them all as separate as I have or should I assemble them without the shoulders and bolt guns but with arms and heads?

They will mainly be white in their colour scheme. Does anyone have that picture tutorial about how to do a simple but good white?
>>
>>49680804
That color scheme is simple and awesome at the same time.
Very nice looking squad you got there.
>>
>>49680977
Are the eyes still wip? What about the purple gloves some of them have?

The stripes on the guns look good. Fits with their "construction worker"-style
>>
>>49681250
>Is it best to keep them all as separate as I have or should I assemble them without the shoulders and bolt guns but with arms and heads?

Why do you have to ask such a question after owning a 3000pts army of DA?

Personally i assemble marines completely and just let the weapons as separate pieces if they are held across the chest (the standard pose). If the pose is more open, i glue them in place.
I think its a little easier that way, others might prefer it otherwise.
>>
>>49681279
I'm not sure whether I'll do more on the eyes, I don't mind them as they are as they kinda look 'alien' i guess and I think i might fuck it up if I try pupils.
You mean the blue/purple arms in back left? Yeah they are just basecoated so far

Yea going for a 'mining' style force so similar I guess

>>
>>49680977
I feel like the eyes could do with a wash around the sockets, they seem too bright a white and it distracts from the great work on the skin.
>>
>>49681345
You'd be surprised how much a bad brush can make that "one pass" not work out that way in practice.

They'll get cleaned up, but if I'd worked on them any later, the paint wouldn't even be dry by the time I have to be using them.
>>
>>49681374
A poor workman blames his tools, anon.
>>
>>49681302
>a 3000pts army of DA?
They are all bikes and Landspeeders with a couple terminators.

All these B@C guys hold their bolter across their chest so I figured I would ask.

With Bikes I would put the arms on the handlebar or with the one hand with the weapon would go to the chest.

Then I had the biker with helmet chest and legs together and the entire bike would be assembled.
>>
>>49681480
If he has bad tools then such results are to be expected.
But then... why pay lots of money for miniatures and paint pots only to use them with a bad brush.. its not like he needs a $30 windsor brush. A $3-5 cheap sable brush would already be an improvement i guess.
>>
>>49681545
>>49681480
I should probably clarify. It's not a "bad brush" in the sense that it's some 50 cent Walmart brush. It's a fairly nice ArtistLoft one. It's just started fraying, badly. And even Master's is only good enough to get it to hold a point for a couple minutes of brushing. It's wider than my drybrush at this point. But when you have to get an army done *now*...

>>
>>49681343

I don't know about that - if every model gets the same base, wash, and highlight then they'll end up looking unnaturally identical, regardless of if theres a little variation in how they're applied. That's why there's something to be said for mixing your fleshtones from a few different colours and varying the proportions a little.

It depends on how sloppy you are. I tend to put the feet on the base and add basing material, and sometimes add the torso and arms as well. Heads I often separately (especially since Blood Angels denote squad function with helmet colour!) when I can. Of course, with a lot of OOP metal models I just have to be extra careful and willing to back over any mistakes I make, as arms are typically the only thing *not* part of the model.

Backpacks, shoulder pauldrons, and guns bigger than a pistol are pretty much an "always do separately" for me. Backpacks and pauldrons you can always add later; it's pretty clear where they end and the model they're attached to begins. Most guns are not only a different colour than the model carrying them, plus attaching them first tends to obscure hard-to-reach areas of the chest when detail painting.

Anybody else here cast in metal?

I tossed out my ancient bottles of Micro Mark RTV silicone; they were starting to congeal, and frankly, I'd like to try something new. Their 1-to-1 product cures quickly (I used the four-hour version, but they have one now that cures in 30 minutes!), but it's really too soft for what I need it to do. Conversely, while their 10-to-1 product had great tearing resistance, I wasn't crazy about the viscosity when it was still liquid.

Micro Mark's stuff can take the heat (450F up to 600F for short periods), but some of the competing products I see are really only rated for resin. Can anyone recommend a good product that can take the heat of low-temperature alloys, reproduces details well, has decent tear strength, and won't cost me $100+?

>>
>>49683021
what is it? it could probably benefit from a sharp edge highlight on each end (the farthest away edge still has the dark blue) i'm not sure what kind of blend you wanted. are these like striations on a chitin plate or did you want a smooth even gradient in equal parts across the whole thing?
>>
>>49683058
It's a Retribution light myrmidon's pauldron, and I wanted to create a blue flame gradient.
>>
>>49683101
well, as a highlight created by light it looks unnatural. as a design painted on the armor it kind of looks messy. if its a flame pattern i might suggest making the flames differnet lengths? if you are happy with it though keep it up.

Hey, newbie here, quick question.

Would it be better to apply washes AFTER you have more or less painted the model? I'm trying to paint Ultramarines and the blue is a bit dark, as I'm applying the Wash all over the body. Should I just apply it to areas where there would be shadows, to keep the nice blue color?

Thanks in advance.

>>49683350
for ultramarines, GW suggests you paint the wash specifically in the recessed areas. generally people will do base coat, then wash, then highlights. if the highlights are way too bright, they might do a watered down or thinned with mixing medium wash over the areas that are too bright

>>
>>49683796
Yeah, the white and yellow paints have been a real pain in the ass.
I'm struggling with the idea of highlighting the red, pink, and orange sections since I'm already using all my colors. Would it be worth it to attempt to mix those colors with a LITTLE white for highlighting those sections?
I appreciate your input. The large plate sections definately do strike me as too flat.
>>
>>49683890
Your yellow looks clean from that picture, but flat, just needs an agrax wash or something
Orange add a little yellow. Red highlight with that orange mixed with some red, then add some yellow. Pink is just red+white anyway, so adding more white will make it more pastel tone but would be better than nothing.
Try pinwashing before you start highlighting though. It'll be a pain in the ass highlighting that many different colours.
>>
>>49683890
you could always just not use yellow or white, the white doesn't fit in too well anyway

Spent the evening painting up one of the Otherworld golems. It was a fun exercise in painting bronze, involving three different shades of bronze paint and a verdigris effect. I have mixed feelings about the reflex: the verdigris turned out very realistic, and it looks as ancient as I wanted, but it also removed most of the shadows and highlights, and make it look kinda flat. Any tips on how to make it "pop" again? How do I do good highlights with bronze, when I'm already using the brightest bronze shade I have?

Ordered a few legs and backs to use the remaining bits I have lying around yesterday and forgot to also buy enough based to put my Space Marines on.

Any suggestions for decent looking budget options to use as bases for these guys? Don't want to pay shipping again for such tiny things.

Models will be regular Marines charging with chainswords, if anyone knows some spicy trick to make those DIY bases better.
>>
Can someone give me a tip to learn not to constantly over-thin my paints? Going for the obvious "just use small amounts until the consistency fits" never works for me and often results in all my paint being on the mixing brush or washed off of it when I "finish" thinning.
>>
>>49689726
Well usually to be on the safe side when thinning. Better to put on multiple thin layers.

But the general consistency most people to tell you to shoot for will be skim milk. That or ink.
>>
>>49689726
I typically over thin like you while trying to hit the perfect consistency and then add more bits of paint from the pot until it feels right. Not sure if this helps. Also, even if you over thin sometimes if you're close enough you can work with it until the water starts to evaporate out a bit then it becomes the right consistency kind of naturally.
>>
>>49689776
>>49689805
I'll try around a bit until I get a feel for it, I guess. Thanks.

Speaking of thinning, is there a thing, like a tiny spoon or something, I dunno, that helps with getting mire paint on the palette? Every brush full of paint makes it harder to add more which is an issue that has annoyed me ever since I mixed watercolors back in school.

That's so garish and awful that I despise it and love it at the same time. It's an ACTUAL canon representation of what Slaanesh marines (especially EC) should look like, instead of the more aesthetically pleasing clean pinks and purples most people use.
Your paint seems to be really thick though, especially noticeable on those fingers, and it could be crisper at the edges.

>>49693771

I'll agree with what the other anon said, these are flat, uninspired. There's a ton of ways to do a muted colour scheme, yours however, just comes off as a bit lazy. Keep experimenting, add some contrast and focal points, maybe one or two brighter spots, it will look better.

Other than that, the colours need some shading and highlighting, that white is just too flat for example.

There's mold lines all over, cleaning them up helps a lot for a better look.

It's also important to keep your work clean, those models have dust and hair all over, makes them look dirty in not in a good way.

Finally, those bases are a bit dull, a bit of basing goes a long way.

Keep working on those models and you'll improve a lot over time.
>>
>>49694075

Thanks! This is what I do: First, I prime it black. Then , I paint the basecoat while leaving unpainted a little margin corresponding to the black outlines. Obviously, I make lots of mistakes, so I have to correct when I get over the black outline with colored paint or while I get over the colored area while correcting a black outline. The key skill is being able to paint with really small strokes using a fine tip brush. This way, I can correct the black outline without destroying it with a huge black blob.

The same skill is quite useful if you want smooth layers or you try to freehandsomething.

My method was simple, probably too simple:
1 Black undercoat
2 Drybrush Citadel Warplock Bronze
3 Drybrush Vallejo Bronze
4 Drybrush Citadel Dwarf Bronze (not sure what they call it nowadays)
5 Apply Citadel Nihilakh Oxide. I watered it out a little bit, and made sure to spread it around before it tried to make sure it got into the cracks and not open spaces.
6 Drybrush more bronze, to bring back the contrast.
7 I finished of by carefully brushing some weathering effect from Tamiya, for a dusty look.

Probably not the best or most efficient way to do it, but it worked. The key is to build up layers and not have too much paint on the brush when drybrushing, it needs to take time. Also look up reference picture of actual old bronze objects, that helps a lot.

When you walk, as a human (the most well studied bipedal organism in the universe) your foot faces foward.

Ths majoriry of your stabilisation is achived by the heels, with occasional input from your great toe. You will notice that your using your toe most often when your center of gravity is forward to your heels.

When you go to walk, you lean slightly forwards and the long part of your foot flexes down.

So lets compare that to your current design:

In terms of center of gravity, its a forward heavy design, so the last thing it needs is backward facing stabilizers. It's almost never going to want to fall backwards.

The second question is how its going to propel itself. Imagine the way a checken walks versus the way an elephant walks. Elephants dont have the front part of the foot flexion to provide that propulsion; hence they are slow and ponderous. Chickens can move quite quickly using the flexion in the foot to contribute to the walking motion.

The orientation of the feet makes the difference between being an agile or clumsy walker. Your current design suggests clumsy.

It's your model, but like everyone else here i strongly suggest chaning the feet.

It's the guy on the right that I'm talking about. Actually look at him. The paint must be like two millimeters thick, at least. You clearly did not thin it.
>>
>>49701258
The one on the right is actually lumpier than the one on the left.
>>
>>49701296
I mean, my paint was so thin I had to do a few layers of paint because the base coat was still showing through.
>>49701311
Oh yeah, look at him! So thats what I was supposed to do? What a stupid idea it was to paint blindfolded.
>>
>>49701370
Is that from the metal paint additive? or was my spraypaint base coat done shitty?
>>
>>49701128
i think the white drybrushing over the model is detrimental- i like how its conveying how frozen they are, but i think it kind of blends the entire model into the same shade and makes it look dusty.
maybe white drybrush the armour, and wash the skin heavily with carroburgh crimson to make it look like the skins pink from frost?
>>
>>49701128
So, in the off chance that your paints were thin enough like you said imma go a different direction. How's your primer? If the primer doesn't go on smooth then their could be something wrong with the primer paint itself or with the way that you're applying it. Could also be putting it on too thick itself.
Are you letting the paint completely dry between each layer? If you're putting wet paint onto paint that hasn't fully dried it can lead to a clumpy, uneven look.
>>
>>49701128
Are you actually putting sand in your paint to get a texture like that?

>>49701443
It could be the metalic paint additive, which would basically be the same thing.
>>
>>49701536
i think the fatigues look fine, i reckon maybe wash the flak armour panels with a blue wash to give a bit more depth to it, and then they should look fine
>>
>>49681635
Looks cool, do you have a background for them?
>>
>>49689726
Use a 'wet palette' in a sealed container. Put small amounts of paint colors in and let sit for a few hours. It will get a good consistency.

Then when you paint, you can add nearly zero water (literally 0-1 drops) to each color and that should be perfect.

In my experience, anyway...
>>
>>49699862
He looks really good anon! Maybe touch up the axe a wee bit. The red bit on the blade looks shoddy in the picture. And maybe hit each rivet with a bit of nuln oil or another dark wash.

Hey, if this is a cardinal sin on this post, let me know, but how do people who get commissioned to paint miniatures set their prices?

Like, a friend of mine claims that it should be basically minimum wage per miniature. I can't agree on that. But at the same time being paid 2$ per miniature that you put hours into is also crazy unfair.

How do you (whom do commissions) set the price?
>>
>>49702142
Seconding this. Friend of mine wants to start playing and considered paying me to paint his models and I'd like a rough estimate what would be appropriate.
>>
>>49702142
It depends on how much effort you want to put into the models. Alot of the commission stuff I see online is just shitty airbrush jobs with some small touchups by hand. I would do a google search and compare how you paint to the different "tiers" and pricing models they have that go with them.
