Paladins didn't exist anywhere before the Second War.

Stormwind had plenty of knights.

The navy wasn't really relevant in the First War, so we never saw Stormwind's fleet at the time.

Lordaeron barely had allies before the Alliance. The human kingdoms mostly weren't fond of one another, and the same goes for the elves.

No seriously. Outside of Garrosh putting on the Riech, the Horde has always done a better job of involving member races as equals and respecting their individual culture as a niche of a greater whole. Blizzard also puts more effort into Horde stories.

The clowns writing alliance story lines will gladly promote humans or tell a HFY story at the expense of its fellow member races with zero hesitation. In many of the Devs eyes, the Alliance has always just been just humans. And now there's enough Human players now thanks to racials and human-center stories for several expansions who like getting their heads patted to RREEE the second the special treatment stops.

Notice Greymane spends most of his time in human form? A lot of people can't wrap their brains around a non-human face of the Alliance. Yet the Horde has had non-orc Warchiefs for two expansions now.

In the follow up of the Suramar questline (not out on live servers yet), where all the elves team up to fight Elisand's nightborne, lady Liadrin confirms that Tyrande can't into any kind of warfare that doesn't consist of stealth archers sitting in a forest.

Tbh that does make sense to a degree. Ideally, I would like the slate wiped clean and WoW to be established as an alternative continuity.
Warcraft 4 should pick up shortly after Frozen Throne and carry on from there. It could potentially reuse some of the plot lines from WoW but it should be a fresh continuity overall.

Pushing faction warfare, ironically, doesn't really work in the kind of game WoW is. It just leads to a dumb situation where Alliance and Horde are constantly at each others' throats while at the same time teaming agianst the world-destroying threat of the week, with the same pattern repeating in every expansion. And because you have to maintain the two competing factions at roughly equal power level to justify one having not wiped out the other despite being in an all-out war you get stuff like the Horde pulling a huge-ass navy and army out of their ass and the Alliance just walking off after the siege of Orgrimmar (because if they'd have done the reasonable thing and dismantled the Horde's war machine after Garrosh's defeat, you'd have broken the two faction system).

Thre's also absolutely no need to make the lore bend over backwards to justify faction warfare when the golden age of world pvp is generally considered to be in vanilla when the two factions weren't even really at war (it was more like a cold war, with neighter side liking the other, but unwilling to commit to a full-scale war). Pvpers will pvp regardless of whether or not you make the lore revolve around them.
