One True High Queen edition

Discuss the lore and viability of Warcraft as a tabletop setting.

No.

Also, what do you think the generation gap is like on Azeroth right now? Is it just "born before the Dark Portal" vs. "born after the Portal," or is there a whole thing where every three years creates a new generational culture?
>>
>>49671121
Some people should go to /wowg/ if their aim is to discuss WoW the game, but that's not the case for everyone and hopefully the majority of the people here.
>>
>>49671150
I'm fairly certain that Arugal had actually summoned the Worgen in by accident in Vanilla and from my vague memories of questing in Duskwood they have always been tied to Druids in some fashion what with the Scythe of Elune being mentioned since Vanilla.
>>
>>49671837
I hope they announce legacy servers at Blizzcon so I can explore these questlines again rather than waiting for another private server.
>>
>>49671581
What about that time when the Dark Portal went live again and what about that other Dark Portal and the Dark Portal in the past?
>>
>>49671150
>Why'd they decide to retcon the worgen into some druid's curse?
Scytche of Elune was a thing in vanilla as well.
There were Worgen in ashenvale. A rare one there dropped a blue leather hat.
I think it was one of the earlier headpieces you could get for leather wearers.
Felt nice getting it.
>>
Going back on the paladin stuff in the last thread, do independent paladins who go around zealously following their own moral compass exist or are they all part of some order?
>>
>>49672696
Logically speaking, that should be a nonzero probability. I'm not sure about precedents in lore (far too many named paladins to check) but it should theoretically be possible to find a cowboy cop paladin who plays by his own rules.
>>
>>49672811
Last one was Arthas and look how that turned out.

>>
>>49672886

It's fun to imagine that the big paladin orders have subsects dedicated to hunting down paladins with the "wrong" convictions. Like they let the independent paladins go around doing their thing but once one of them starts indiscriminately killing in the name of their ideology they send out their hounds to take them down.

Glory to Gilneas!

As a worgen player, I am immensely happy with their handling of the race and Genn. It's not Mary Sue, it's sensible, it's bloody perfect. I finally feel like I can RP someone that fit with its own race, faction and leader.

That and Genn is an amazing character right now. I do admit I had completely forgotten he had a son and that said son was killed by the Banshee Bitch fucking ages ago though.
>>
>>49671837
Correct. There was a caravan that got ambused, and the Scythe of Elune was lost, the night elf carrying it killed. The woods were cursed ever since, give or take.
>>
Would a Gilnean forsaken be alright to roleplay or was it only those three specific dudes that were turned into forsaken?
>>
>>49673276
Wasn't there something about worgendom that made them resistant to the process? Beyond that, if you were a Gilnean in name but were stuck outside the gate, it would make sense.
>>
>>49673305
Was every Gilean subjected to the curse? I was mostly operating under the assumption that there may have been isolated pockets of Gilneans that just hid in the woods or something while shit went down, only to get fucked up by forsaken troops in the aftermath.

>>
>>49673337
The woods were not safe at all, between the feral worgen and the beasts.

That's the whole "funny" point about pretty much every race in WoW and especially the Cataclysm and MoP races.

You're from a sub-division of an already endangered race, yet you see fuckers qharing your blood 24/7.
Obviously gameplay imposes limits, but realistically, Azeroth would be pretty fucking empty.
Goblins and Pandaria obviously have the prize, for being survivors of a subfaction of an already depleted race. You'd have 500 Gilneans max walking through Darnassus' gate, and all the goblins were barely enough to fill a boat, and not a big one. Pandarens are a select few of an island havinf a single tiny village on it.

But anyway, it's just silly lore and gameplay implications. If we had to care about all the NPCs that died and them acrually impacting the game, Orgrimmar and Stormwind would have lost their armies since week 3 of Vanilla.
>>
>>>49670155
Bruh. The company is literally Activision blizzard.
>>
>>49673403
That's actually a decent and sensible choice. It would be absolutelt logical, in order to indefinitely unitethe two kingdoms and completely assimilate the Gilneans.

I'm stil mad he isn't the Child of Light and Shadow and that Illidindu got the role.

Just curious, was the existence of Stormwind in WoW a retcon; ie wasn't it implied in WC3 that Jaina's forces on Theramore were the only surviving Alliance left from the Eastern Kingdoms?

It is mentioned in the wc3 manual that Stormwind under Varian is still an ally, but with the distance of the great sea between them Lordaeron is mostly left on its own.

A legitimate ruler of Lordaeron (and the elimination of Balnazar) could help bring the Scarlet Crusade to heel. With them under the direction of someone who would point them at the correct enemies, they could easily become a force for good.

Having a human kingdom of lordaeron is complicated too complicated for blizzard.

When it is unknown what Calia is up to then that complication persists in that players still ask about it.
Now that Calia is brought back, and says she doesn't want to be queen of lordaeron, that issue is solved for blizzard.

Also why Stromgarde died, why kul tiras is forgotten and why gilneas turned into dogs.
Too complicated to have more than one human faction.

We could accept that, and it's a logical conclusion to make, but very little has ever distinctified the human kingdoms in Warcraft outside of color and location.

There's literally nothing more boring about Stormwind than there is about any of the other human nations.

If Stromgarde had been chosen as the token human nation in WoW, anon would be complaining about them being the most boring nation, because it's what we have and not what we don't have.

The only human kingdom to be given a unique aesthetic is Gilneas come Cataclysm with the pseudo-Victorian design.

I know they're not really canon at all any more (though they had a lot of stuff that became canon before any other source), but I was looking at the old pre-WoW RPG books and what interested me was the supplementary rules one of the books had for arcane and divine magic.

Basically, arcane magic is addictive and causes insanity and mutations if you really overuse it (fel magic even more so, being risky to use at all, while with normal wizard magic you basically had no problem if you just took a break from casting spells every once in a while), but if you were willing to take those risks you could get more power out of it. There were rules for getting more power if you like, "pushed" a spell, or used demon blood, in exchange for having to do a will save and if you lost it you got corruption points and et cetera et cetera. Divine magic wasn't addictive, but was powered by faith/conviction/willpower, and occasionally fate or whatever powers the caster served would conspire to test them. If you failed it your powers would weaken but if you succeeded you got a renewed faith bonus for a while.

In lore, these things are... sort of canon? It's left ambiguous, there are some hints that they are the case but they could be ignored. My questions are, first, what would people prefer, for those sorts of thing to be canon or not? Second, if a GM of yours used systems like this, would you like it, or would you prefer to be able to wizard it up without having to be careful?

And while I'm asking, I just want to check: the ability to use the Light is based on conviction, that's canon, yes? You need skill and experience to cast spells well too, but the amount of raw Light power you can put out is based on your faith. But you don't actually need to believe in "the Light" to use the Light, do you? Or even know about it? You can think you're getting your powers from a god or the sun or a talking crystal or a loa, but so long as you really believe, it works. Is that right?

Arcane magic has been distanced from being fel lite and damning you forever because it was the shit the titans used to order the universe and also was tied to a whole dragonflight, ley lines, and other stuff that was inherantly a part of Azeroth.

Arcane magic can still be addictive and give you a bad case of "The power...the INFINITE POWER! AHAHAHAHAHA!" but damning yourself for power/a noble cause is more wholely the province of warlocks and demon hunters and death knights and sometimes shadow priests and really isn't that enough.

As far as priests go, the Light being the patron of various gods is....debated. No one's entirely sure and the mods haven't clarified as far as I know-people have theories and priest magic sure LOOKS like the Light, but a Troll praying to the Loa uses priest magic as well as a human praying directly to the Light.

As Father Jack'd say, That would be an ecumenical matter.

Hm, ok.

Another thing: at one point, it was given as fact that the use of arcane magic on Azeroth is what attracted the Burning Legion to it, that the demons didn't notice Azeroth was around until the night elves started using the Well of Eternity. It was supposed to be because of this that the high elves put a bunch of big runestones around Quel'Thalas, because they dampened whatever signal it was that arcane magic use caused. Since rune magic seems linked to the Titans, it's easy enough to imagine that "authorized" arcane magic users like titan constructs and the dragons also had some sort of dampening like that built in. And then when the elves taught arcane magic to humans, the human mages started using magic all over the place and the demons were able to come back.

Has all of that been totally shredded by now? And if it has been, what were the runestones of Quel'Thalas for? Their existence is pretty solidly established.

While I'm asking... where does arcane magic come from? Fel magic you can draw out of the Nether from basically wherever, I think, but last I knew arcane magic on Azeroth came from the Well of Eternity, and was freely available after the Sundering because the explosion basically splattered it all over the place. Like... arcane magic is basically Titan blood, now? So Azeroth has it and the other Titans had it.

So, where is it coming from when you use arcane magic on Draenor? Or on occasions where you travel to some other off-world location, like a demon planet?

And you know what else, talking about worlds: Outland. Is it in the Great Dark Beyond or in the Twisting Nether? It was pretty clearly SUPPOSED to be in the Nether originally, but now they have this demon immortality retcon. Is Outland supposed to be like, on the border of some hole where the Nether leaks out into the Beyond?

Quel'Thalas was founded about 3k years after the Legion first invaded and Well of Eternity exploded.

Runestones concealed the Sunwell, kept demons away, and also played a role in the shield that protected Silvermoon from invading armies: without Dar'khan's betrayal, Scourge wasn't able to get to the Well

Anyway, Warcraft RPG is NOT canon, so nothing found there is a part of lore unless it was also present in valid sources: Games, Chronicles, novels (not sure if all or just some of them)

In Legion it turns out the survivors of the Burning Legion's conquest of all their planets have formed a giant army to take the fight to them. They are led by Turalyon (hero of WC2 who survived the destruction of Draenor). The Draenei apparently form the bulk of the army and they are currently entrenched on Argus (their home world).

For what purpose
>>
>>49679236

They swapped voice actors for most of the characters between WC3 and WoW. The guy who does Arthas in WoW is actually the guy who did Kel'Thuzad in WC3, weirdly enough. A lot of the VA's from the RTS games were not even asked to come back, for example Kerrigan's original VA said she would have done SC2 almost for free if she'd been offered.
>>
>>49679265
It's not even about the voices, it's about the dialogue and personalities. It's like the didn't even care. But then again, they made Varian into a wise king from a warmonger and Jaina from a peace-loving pacifist into literally Hitler in a single expansion.
>>
>>49679296
>they made Varian into a wise king from a warmonger and Jaina from a peace-loving pacifist into literally Hitler in a single expansion.

Those both happened during the production team switch. Cataclysm was the first Expac produced fully by the new design team and they just went all over the place with the plot
>>
>>49679296
>>49679350
To be honest though, Jaina changing made sense in the face of continued troubles she experienced and the fact that the orcs took a steaming shit on her attempts of peace.

Sadly, any character that "at last truly sees" what the Horde always was is slated to be killed off as a raid boss. Varian got the axe for a remote threat that they will end them next time, so I can only guess Jaina will get the full works.
>>
>>49678809

Burning Legion exists in infinite timelines. This is canon and quoted by Blizz. Also demons can only be truly killed in the nether or on Argus. Otherwise they are immediately redirected back in the nether. So yes, Archimonde never died at Hyjal and the Night Elves lost their immortality for nothing.
>>
>>49679410
Sounds like they're going to reuse Archimonde and Mannoroth as bosses again.
>>
>>49679449

They already did. Archimonde is the final boss for the Druid campaign.

>>49678274
Don't worry, in Warcraft "the Light" doesn't work the way it does in D&D. In warcraft the light will aid anyone that believes in it and has enough confidence that what he/she dust is the right thing to do. You do not have to be morally good to do it. That is why for example the Scarlet crusade member can still wield the light even tough they are arguably psychotic maniacs that torture, main and kill most that are not "one of them" be they humans or undead or however.

Sylvanas said that she hated forest trolls as much as demons and ordered them killed in that mission. The bandits and ogres were recruitable by possessing their leader.
>>
>>49679781
Wrong, he was right all along, just as Arthas was right when he wanted to slay them in missions 1 and 2 and just as Jaina was right about them before she stopped from flooding Orgrimmar.

Orcs are a race of brutes interlaced with few rare "saviours" like Hellscream and Thrall, who still manage to be utterly dindu in their behaviour.
Greenskins need to be purged, no one would miss them.

Blind, undifferentiated g enocide is for barbarians and monsters. The Orcs have the potential to become more than what they are, but they need to be forced to change. >>
>>49679969
The true problem is that they never were, we honestly never saw them in any other state at any point of their history and save for Thrall, orcs have been nothing more than brutes in WC1, WC2, WC3 and majority of WoW - barbarism is their true nature, on top of them being extraplanetary aliens who simply don't fit with the rest of Azeroth.
>>
>>49679911
The issue here is, every race in WoW (from a gameplay perspective), is the majority of said race. There aren't massive rival tribes of Orcs, no hidden Elf city that offers playable characters. The Trolls are the only off-shoot of "hey maybe these guys aren't that bad?", because every other Trolltribe is full of we-wuz-kings has-beens.

>>49679906
Issue with that is, you remove everything that differentiates an Orc from anything else. You may as well just flood Orgrimmar, I wouldn't miss it. Let Tauren, Darkspear and the Sin'Dorei gallivant about, flood the Undercity with something that kills the Undead and maybe you have a halfway unique and understandable faction dynamic/relationship.
>>
>>49679950
But the Draenei have made positive contributions to Azeroth. The other invaders haven't in the slightest, they've just sort of kinda maybe put bandages over the wounds they've made.

>>49680003
And this, I wish Blizzard could just get their heads around this. Even in WoD we had a chance to see the Orcs be peaceful and noble and proud. But it's just NPCs saying "Hey remember when they were noble, proud and peaceful?"
>>

Titanforged out. Azeroth is for the trolls
>>
>>49680030
Well, I was referring to the Orcs there. I think enough time has passed for the Titanforged to be counted as Natives of Azeroth. I can't imagine a single troll is still alive from the time before the Titans came and saved the world from the Old Gods and the Elements.
>>
>>49680021

It's warcraft, not peacefulcraft.

Looking at the background stories of WoD, everyone was constantly fighting on Draenor before Gul'dan and Garrosh founded the Horde. The only difference is that Draenei weren't specifically targeted.
>>
>>49680059
>not peacefulcraft
The way I see it is that Alliance leadership has been completely de-fanged. All leaders who either had experience, power or vision were killed off/driven off/flash-frozen and we are left with a doe-eyed boy king, while people like Garrosh were consistently given a free pass.

I'm not going to be surprised when a proper Fourth War is going to happen after Legion and Alliance gets decimated yet again.

You know, all Uther had to do is knock the snot out of Arthas and physically stand in front of the city gate to stop the purge. I think the lives of people (not everyone could've eaten the grain) are higher priority to a paladin than an insult to a royal.
In retrospective, the city would've been a tough fight, but if the three of them were there instead of Arthas just culling everyone by himself, the war would've been very different and it would not need be a disaster.

Seriously, Stratholme and Uther's idiot ball moment were the weakest parts of the story in WC3.
>>

If he did that he would be instantly attacked by every other knight there. What he did do was try to pull as much wind out of Arthas by taking a good portion of the knights with him on the way out. And trolls, like any Azerothian lifeform except native elementals and Old Gods' faceless and qiraji, are "titanforged" too. Not directly, but all organic life on Azeroth does have its origin in titan-made Emerald Dream

Azeroth belongs to the elementals, if anything.
>>
>>49681076
>Azeroth belongs to the elementals, if anything.
Most worlds should be like that.

I was reading on the titan process and the first step was to pacify the native elemental population.
Azeroths elementals were especially hostile due to the abnormally strong world soul consuming the spirit element, but even if that wasn't the case the standard move was the pacify the elementals.

I wonder if that is enough to suggest that Draenor was also ordered by the titans since it isn't dominated by elementals.

Then you'd have Arthas and co trying to hold back the undead from the biggest population center after the capital, failing, dying and then being raised anyway.

Arthas was doomed to fail. Anyway I think it makes for an interesting situation where Uther makes the choice that a paladin should make, while Arthas decides that preserving the kingdom is more important than maintaining his moral superiority.

Heroes are larger in wc3 for gameplaying purposes, but I imagine that the general elf heighs falls somewhere between the high elf priest and the high elf female villager.

Now that I think about it, plaguing victims by using their food supplies would be far less devastating than poisoning their water or releasing the plague via disease.
Foodgrain is easy to isolate and destroy. Water is far less easy to stop distribution of, and disease is the hardest to stop without punitive and harsh measures in real life.
Now in WC3, the universe hadn't gone off the rails quite that much. I would be interested in seeing how Lordaeron would react to a water borne or rodent borne plague of undeath.

I think it would be harder to spread.

The undead plague wasn't contagious, you didn't catch it by being near other undead.

Grain was transported, but I don't see why you'd need to transport water around the same way. Water would be easier to get locally.

You would have to have a lot more starting points for the plague if you used water instead of grain.

Actually the portrait is taken from a different model specifically used for portraits.

>>
>>49681191
Part of it is that's the way the script went. So to an extent arguing over it is pointless, but my autism demands I do so.

At the time, they had no cure for the plague. We have no idea what the travel time was in terms of getting from Anderhal to Strathome, depending on how things go it could have been anywhere from 1 to 4 days i guess. Plenty of time for the vast majority of the city to eat the grain, something the mission hints at considering every citizen in the mission turns.

The other thing to consider is what Baron Rivendare would have done considering that alongside Kel'Thurzard he was the main backer of the cult, i'm sure if it came down to it he would have been willing to help Mal'Gannis if told to.

Also if I was Mal'Gannis and I had Uther stuck in my zombie filled city I'd be radioing in my brothers to come and fuck his shit up. SO had they all gone in, there is nothing to say they wouldn't have found themselves up to their ears in Dreadlords planning on eliminating the main military leadership of Lordaeron.
>>
>>49681357
And warming his nights by squealing in delight as his sword enters her?
>>
>>49681337
Magic-borne plague seems to be more akin to poison than an actual plague, dissolving it in water would reduce the potency and the amount needed for delivery, on top of it being highly imprecise method of delivery. Grain was the best vector.
>>
>>49681337
the disease is contagious because the primary victims would kill off the others and they could be raised later, like ghouls. Zombies also infect others via their bites.

If you were to use water, it would be pretty much unstoppable. You would have to infect lake lordamere and darrowmere, but it would be pretty much unstoppable.

The cult of the damned failed in their original mission and was nearly wiped out post stratholme. Now imagine the plague breaking out in Capital city, Stratholme, hearthglen, tyr's hand and assorted villages at the same time.
>>
>>49681392
no. Nightborne kids are pure.
which is why they turn slutty later on.

Korine pet when?
>>
>>49681396
But the grain vector nearly failed. The disease was stopped at stratholme and the scourge was pretty much dead. If arthas didn't banzai charge into northrend, the legion invasion would have failed before it started.

As far as diseases go, food borne ones are pretty much bottom of the totem pole. Waterborne diseases kill more people far more quickly because they infect a lot of people.

Also the plague was a classic disease which turned them into zambies.

>Now imagine the plague breaking out in Capital city, Stratholme, hearthglen, tyr's hand and assorted villages at the same time.

And you'd do that how with water?
No you can't infect large lakes like Lordamere and Darrowmere. That is just silly. Then you might as well say "We infected the air supply with the plague, now the winds will carry it all over the eastern kingdoms."

Water isn't brought from Andorhal to Stratholme.
Grain is.
Infecting the water in Andorhal does nothing to stratholme, infecting the grain does.

For water to work you'd have to make the plague more ptoent and you'd have a lot more starting points of the grain, probably every well in the kingdom.
I'm not sure how exactly it was created, but I imagine it's a little harder then pouring a potion into the well.
Maybe you need your cult of the damned acolytes to stand around and chant around the well for a while to create the plague and that is for sure bound to draw some attention.

>andorhal
they targeted andorhal because it was the breadbasket of lordaeron and an important shipping center for grain, not farmland itself. They infested the granaries.

You can absolutely infect water supplies in a number of cities via members of the cult of the damned.. Relatively large bodies of water can be easily infected or even better, infecting wells and small waterways that are downstream. You can stop a shipment of plagued grain and buy food to feed your nation

You cannot do the same with water which is far more necessary for daily survival and is far more difficult to be transported.

>it will draw attention.
About as much as the central town in lordaeron being overrun by the undead and the cult of the damned during harvest season and no one giving a fuck.

The grain was infected when it was moved into storage, which requires a lot of cultists actively poisoning the grain. It also was powerful enough to actively blight the ground where it was stored. It is pretty fucking powerful.
