I remember this setting that had all the dungeons and evil masterminds and shit managed by an office company. It was called "Parker and Johnson" or some other really generic sounding name. There was only one or two threads about it, but it basically explained why and how this company worked, basically mediating conflicts between adventurers and BBEGS (I think it worked kind of like the Guild of calamitous intent, but I don't remember).

Most of the threads were about office life and various employees, including a mindflayer middle manager, and the CEO who was basically just an awakened housecat

There was a quest I remember, before quest were really a thing, where among other things we started as a corpse of.. something, killed two people and a dog and created something weird that wanted to die out of them, possessed a baby, an apartment and smashed a cop car through the apartment for the baby to play with, all in one lone thread.

I'm not doing it justice, but it was some of the best existential cosmic horror I've read here.

>anon decided to have some fun with a very classic DnD campaign his friend was running. >He joins for his first session with the group but doesn't get introduced to the group until way into the session.
>His character is an crazy skeleton falling from outer space, with major hits of the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's blasting through his com systems, fighting with a poorly-crafted mace made out of space junk.
>He basically falls from space onto one of the BBEG's minion's bases and starts attacking them
>The party soon joins him in the fight.
>The party's paladin smites him as soon as the fight is over, but little did they knew, Major Tom can reform at will !
>From this point onward Major Tom will try his bast to find his place in the world.

A goody from an AdEva game from a few years ago
>Group so far(2-3 sessions) has been 3 pilots, Jeffrey the socially awkward AT Tactician(me), Vincent the cool-guy Pointman, and Boris the spastic Skirmisher, as well as an Operations Director, Khalil.
>We're getting a new group member, a Berserker named Cynthia
>The first time we meet her is right before our first proper sortie against an Angel, since the last one was our introduction to the whole EVA thing.
>The OD introduces us to her, and I, being the socially awkward nerd that I am, just kind of look at her
>"You gonna stand around staring all day?"
>"I wasn't staring."
>Cut to a few minutes later, after we've put on our plugsuits, we meet up again outside the locker rooms before we get in our EVAs and one of the NERV staff gives her our names, since we forgot to earlier.

>What follows are direct quotes from the chatlog

>Jeffrey Warren raises his hand. "I'm Jeffery. He who does not stare."
>Abe Henderson facepalms
>Vincent Divina eye twitch
>Khalil Monsusamadi clears his throat.
>A tumbleweed rolls through the control room
>Cynthia Norndottir: Whatever you say man
>Jeffrey Warren stares. He clearly isn't as well-received as he had hoped.

For the next 2 years, any time someone felt like having a laugh, they'd remind me of that line.

tl;dr, I said something awkward as a joke and forgot to include that it was said sarcastically, it fell flat both in-character and out-of-character, and I didn't hear the end of it for 2 full years

I remember a thread about a way for some sort of tribe that needed to extract blood, without spilling it, for arbitrary reasons.

Some crazy ass anon suggested a large hollow needle with another thinner, longer needle on the inside, and a bellows to make sure you can suck the blood out without spilling it.

That quickly evolved into some sort of stealth vampire monsters that hide in the rafters and ambushes people. They would have those needles mounted on either hand, connected to both a giant repository for the blood and a bellows connected to the opposite arm. They would fight by jabbing the needle into someone, furiously flapping their opposite arm until their blood is drained, and skulk away into the night.

Ever since I've wanted to incorporate those magnificent bastards, but I've never been able to think of a setting where they'd fit.
>>
I've seen some great 40k stuff, like the Walled City inspired neon anti-Tyranid Guardsmen regiment.

I wasn't there for the thread, but The Machine (on 1d4chan) and Afterschool Activities (same) are two of the best horror concepts I've seen.

The Machine has players trying to navigate a giant world sized factory that doesn't give a shit about them. Players tend to die when they fuck up and accidentally stand somewhere when a piston activates or something.
No mechanics, sadly and ironically

Afterschool Activities uses a report card as a character sheet (I like the idea of bringing your own?) and casts the players of students in a besieged boarding school. There's roving "monsters" and a pursuing "shadow" and the basic idea is that skill tests are based on student grades. If a PC is killed or disabled, the player takes over another classmate to join the active party (until the class is wiped out or the scenario is solved).

You mean TLG? I actually really liked him, I wish /tg/ would make him a meme.
>>
>>49652994
Heretical. Love. Quest.

This is what it meant to have a Quest on /tg/ that was actually pretty damn good. Also what it meant to have the QM enter a Magical Realm, then proceed to fuck with the audience in the most spectacular and enjoyable of ways. Remember kids, The Rape train has no breaks, Hat-chan is awesome, and Doomrider is a total bro.
>>
>>49652994
Pretty much everything by MrCulexus? Remember when /tg/ was absolutely heretical at times? I mean, we need more Chaos on /tg/, on many levels. First, our threads are too formulaic, ans bland. Everything is confined to its own general, and we hardly see the level of creativity that /tg/ used to have. Also, the mods shoot down threads at random, from Setting threads to Filename Threads. Nothing is safe.

Hell, I would deal with the /b/-tier shitposts and absolutely madness of an entirely unmoderated board if it meant that we would get that old spark of creativity we used to have.

>>
>>49665669
I could. Didn't the threads get purged when the archives went down?

Also, I sort of made a mistake when I was numbering them. I wanted the 2000 image to be important, so I started letting lower ones share numbers. I'll have to go and order them myself. Of course, then they won't match the image names in the posts so it is probably better to leave them alone.

The Runic Men were pretty crazy, they really got out of hand. You remember how a couple of times they glitched the game and killed more enemies than actually existed on the battlefield? I don't know if I posted it in the threads but a couple of times they did even crazier things. I think during 2 battles when the event selection was chosen the game glitched and had a black popup box telling me there was an error, then it sent me back to the event screen to pick again, with that selection removed. I picked the other selection and it beat the crap out of the enemy that time, same as always, no sweat nothing to worry about. The battle ended and it showed the victory screen, all enemies beat, none wounded on our side, the usual. I clicked continue.

And then it brought me to a second, different victory screen. Once again all were beaten and none of us were hurt, but the loot and amount dead to wounded was different. When I finished with that and went back to the map I had the loot and results from BOTH victories.

Apparently the Runic Men had stats so high they caused an overflow and glitched the event selection, making me pick again. Because of this they were able to win ONE battle TWICE. And they did that TWICE.

They did it again on a non-battle once as well, during that event where the guys are trying to sell you dorf slaves. The Runic Men were so strongly against slavery that they both freed the dwarf slaves and convinced the slave traders to tell their clan to give up slavery and free the slaves. The Runic Men hated slavery SO MUCH that they freed more slaves than existed, creating new free dorfs.

That shit was the best until it devolved into waifuing and namefagging.

Still, just cut out everything involving everyone's snowflake special characters and what you have left is a pretty awesome Chapter that, while still very eccentric in flavor (with their custom deep-sea diver helmets), wouldn't be hugely out of place in 40k proper.

Out of all the things we see Space Marines do, and how every chapter seems to have their own specialty in warfare, we don't see any chapters that focus on boarding actions and fleet combat. The Star Krakens fill that niche, and they do so with a very nebulous nautical flavor.

As long as we're talking about great 40K shit /tg/ has thought up that was eventually derailed by waifuing, The Ship Moves deserves honorable mention. What started out as an extremely original premise and an excellent setting that still managed to retain the grimdark flavor of 40K. All of mankind holds up in an ark the size of a solar system in order to escape xenos and chaos on all sides, as the god captain sails off into the unknown.

The last time I checked the 1d4chan page, half of it was about how the up with the Tau and Eldar building the key systems of the ship, and about how Space Marines could fuck them and anyone else they wanted. Ugh.

Shunned might not be the best word, but admit it: creative writing has at least been hurt. Sure it still lives on in various forms, we fa/tg/uys are creative blokes and quests weren't the be-all and end-all. But they had their value, an interactive format of story telling that's hard to find in any other form or posters will at least be discouraged from.

Tldr: I'm still grumpy about quests, they had a place on mah special board

/tg/'s sue. We made a Goddamn Mary Sue, and we didn't half-ass it either. We went whole hog and did absolutely everything we could to create the worst Sue possible and when we were done... we sent it into 40k. Check the wiki for the thread.

You know what was awesome and deserved better? Uberstadt. I wasn't there for the thread but I came across it on 1d4chan one time and have been kind of obsessed with it ever since. It was such a strong concept with so many cool ideas attached to it:
>Impossibly huge magitek/clockpunk city
>Lawyers as a bounty hunter-ish combat class
>Crazed pit-dwelling tinker elves
Probably the best idea teej ever had. It had everything that made settings like Ankh-Morpork and Ravnica great without feeling too derivative. Mind you, "best idea" isn't the same as "greatest creation-" there were a lot of dumb ideas too, especially with the races. Still, it could have been something truly great if the idea were picked up by a small team of creative, talented people.

I just wish the wiki was still up so I could learn more

I'm reading about this now.
Why are kobolds classy and civilized, while halflings are "insane cannibalistic locusts" "obsessed with being 'fisticated'"? I suppose this is one of the stupider things you mentioned.
>>
>>49684812
Kobolds, as lizards, have far smarter brains then any kind of mammal could possibly have.
>>
>>49684812
It is. It's got that usual /tg/ problem where people who had no business working on the project force their shitty ideas into it so they can say they helped. They tried to have a unique take on each race (except humans for some stupid reason), so most of the problems stem from people's shitty, lazy "subversions" that miss the point entirely. The kobold one really sticks out in my mind, too, since it was so obviously written by kobold fanboys who didn't realize the whole reason people like kobolds is because they're underdogs. On the other hand, I love the high elves since they're still recognizably high elves, but they've been forced by the setting into a role you don't normally see them in.

Like I said, I love it more for the promise it represented than what we actually got

The waifus where basically the special characters of the Star Krakens. Divided into ten or eleven companies or something, they each had their own ships and flavor and specialties and so much history and angst. So much so that they took namefags and started writing exclusively for those characters.

Eventually it go so focused that most of the people on the project just forgot that these were Space Marines and they have to do Space Marine things. You can jack off to your special character all you want, but until you start fleshing out the enemies they might encounter, and detail the combat these marines see, it's all just waifuing and posturing. They forgot about the area of space they were supposed to be protecting and the rather neat enemies that people came up with.

We had a corrupt Rogue Trader, Slaaneshi Sirens that psychic sang ships to their doom, the weird anglerfish aliens, Dark Eldar pirates, and Freebootaz of course.

All others have their children, the bastard children of a dozen stolen styles, amalgams of edge and love and poetry and hate, writhing in the fanfiction.

We would not be so childish, so petty. If this is a game to be played, then we shall hold nothing back, we will not be contented by the tepid mediocrity of the mundane and the forgettable. We will birth into the world a horror of horrors, and she will be beautiful.

Gaze upon the perfection of our daughter. She is a God with a thousand stolen aesthetics, no mere amalgam but a monument to our mastery. There will be no sue but our sue. She has stolen all we have given her to steal, and that which is truly fit to rule cannot have that rule stolen from her. She is worthy of worship because all that can be stolen from her is pain. All will love her and despair under her brilliance.

nothing quite as interesting.

a little over a year ago a couple dozen anons got together and made the '/tg/ Parliament'. there was voting on laws n' shieet, political parties, and mediocre role-play. You had groups like, say, Knights of the Magical Realm, the Homebrewer's Union, and that sort of thing all competing for control of...well the thread I guess.

Bills were passed, newspapers were written, and IRCs were made for the purpose of shady backroom deals.

The unspoken 'win' condition was building enough of a coalition to seize control and reform the government into whatever form that party wanted. Of course, that never actually happened. The threads slowed to a crawl after a while.

The map was a someone's attempt at giving context to the bills, and a few groups slathered their own MS Paint locations all over it as time went on. I don't think that's the final version, either.

I'm a bit leery to do anything on /qst/. I was against the board split and knew it would eventually lead to an outright ban for quests on /tg/.

I'm still around and playing though. Currently in a 5e group as the worst paladin ever.

No joke rolled a 20 on "I want to catch a giant shark" only to have the DM actually throw a giant shark at our level 2 party. It killed three members and nearly sunk the boat. Good times, but everybody now gets a bit antsy when I pull out my rod.

I think I miss the era before general threads the most if I had to pick just one thing. When you could be somewhat lewd and have badwrongfun here, read ludicrous dorf fortress greentext, and generally have a lot more fun here. Times have changed, and not for the better.

It isn't even THAT kind of group, but I did manage to stave off a large group of bandits by flopping it out and getting a 20 on intimidate.

I described it as my 4' holy staff. The DM, seeking to put a damper on it, conducted a roll and determined it was, in fact, only 3' long.

I also successfully used it and got a killing blow in a different fight.

What my party doesn't know is that I secretly worship Umberlee and am planning at some point to feed our resident annoying Mary Sue thief to the fish. Hue.

My plan is to sink the next ship we get on, drop the mic, and never allow myself to play with a group of randoms again.

I have learned my lesson about joining groups advertising at the local store.

Anyways I've got to finish getting plastered so maybe I won't be sober enough to be mad while I watch the iggles BTFO detoilet. Four games into the season and I'm so fed up I just want the pats to win the owl so I can watch the world burn.

Maybe I'll run something on /qst/ if it becomes clear things will never go back to how they were.

Anyone remember that one setting we made that was kinda similar to Snowpiercer? I remember outside the train was complete darkness and there were indestructible robot workers or something along those lines.

You're entitled to that opinion, certainly, but I still think a lot of good worldbuilding and writing got done, and I had a good time with it till (almost) the end. Any idea that gets that large that fast and lasts that long is going to get a little weird and feel a little iffy to some people.
>>
>>49706928
It lasted for a long time, but from the fifth thread it was an insular company that ignored many decent quality ideas that were brought up. The reason it lasted that long is that it was held together by less than a dozen people circlejerking for months.

Oh, knock it off. People who say nothing is created any more are just as wrong now as they were four years ago during the last purge. You're just too lazy to make something cool. What's worse: you're actively ignoring things that are being made right now, like Towergirls. You just don't see any of your edgy, softcore porn being made for you like it was in the old days, and pretend nothing is being made at all.
>>
>>49707810
Towergirls is softcore porn, so I don't know what your point is.

I'm talking about things like Timewizards homebrew, setting creation that wasn't just "how can I imagine my willy getting sucked the best" kind of world building.

Not him, but general threads are a major offender in the lack of quality threads about such subjects. Rather than having different threads that any anon can go into after reading the OP, its a general with a small userbase and nothing inside it will be noticed for its own merits. The entire OP is just a pile of links. Compare that to threads where a new idea is presented and wonder why the quantity and quality has decreased so massively
>>
>>49707877
I have never subscribed to the idea of general threads decreasing the quality of discussion. How could such a claim possibly be proved? And why would a general thread not allow for smaller discussions? That's absurd. There is nothing at all that stops people from posting specific questions. This isn't /vg/.

Anon, I...
>>
Come on people start up some worldbuilding threads I got me a hankering
>>
>>49707895
Let me put it this way. Rather than seeing an interesting blurb, you see a mess of links. How many people post in these sorts of things at a time? About thirty as the maximum. Over the course of a day, that might rotate around to 45-50. In that, there will be several settings being floated, each with a few dozen posts over several hours, before being ignored. And that is the only setting thread on the board. Compare that to the setting threads of early /tg/, where there could be 100+ posters. And there would be half a dozen up at once, all focusing on the setting in the thread, and usually breaking the bump limit when dealing with only that setting
>>49707929
no, i got told to go to /wbg/ when i did that last
>>
>>49707905
It's also got a new pantheon under development, anons helping out each other with development of the setting, and ideas about the game. Now you're just moving the goalposts.
>>
>>49707937
>you guys dont get softcore porn handed to you therefore you're entitled shitlords
>gives example which contains, surprise surprise, catgirl sex
No anon, you are the retard. The moving goalposts is coming from you
>>
>>49707936
> Compare that to the setting threads of early /tg/, where there could be 100+ posters,

That argument is both potentially untrue and certainly misleading.

Consider this, anon. There are far, far more posts on the board now. Threads last less time. WAY less time. The old Tales of the Emperasque threads lasted up to eight days. Why? Because they had a large number of lurkers, and four or five posters, and one OP who did all the work. So there may have been 100+ posts, but you have absolutely no way of knowing how many posters, because this isn't /soc/. A lot of the arguments I see being floated here are arguments which hinge on unprovable facts.
>>
>>49707936
wbg is trash

Its for helping people with their shit, nothing interestings come out of it
>>
>>49707810
>Towergirls
Are you implying that an overblown CYOA about which waifu you want is equivalent to anything other than the worst of /a/ trash?
>>
>>49707951
There is cheesecake in the thread, yes, but you're frankly nuts if you think the old worldbuilding threads didn't have that too. For what it's worth, I tend to ignore it.
>>
>>49652994
I remember a couple of threads in which we thought up a giger-verse, pretty interesting
>>
I give you those, but I've seen the same thing happen over and over again. The only time I've been part of a successful thread that actually produced anything, was when I did the pdf and basically kept on bumping the thread by myself. After that it has been individuals, not masturbating masses, that have put things forward. And I just don't see anything tangible created when people just whack themselves off and leave.
>>
>>49707977
I'm pointing out that it is original content, in direct contravention to what he was claiming. It IS original, he just chose to ignore it. Eversor is making an entire art gallery for it right now on his tumblr and is posting it here.

>>
>>49708016
>thirty posts
Nope, it was three autists who spammed shit for about two and a half hours, and i reported them and tried to ignore them spamming my thread so much that i only got about three replies. Then twelve hours after discussion finally was beginning to start up, the whole thread was deleted, presumably by the mod. No poster was banned messages or anything. Just gone.
>>
>>49708042
Well, that sucks. I'm sorry you got stung like that.

For what it's worth, it's happened to my threads too, and eventually I got success by manually reporting each individual post and going to the IRC to point out the problem to the mods ALTERNATE and dongfix. They're about the only ones who do anything outside their own personal favorite boards these days.

I know that should be unnecessary, but spammers will be spammers. Don't let your bitterness about your own misfortune convince you the rest of the board is unsalvageable, though.

Its that i compare what we have to go through now-board police spammers, a second purge of creatives from the board (disclaimer, i dont quest since predator quest which was like four years ago now, but the entire installment of /qst/ was a clusterfuck where the mod acted like a petulant child when the actual users disliked the idea and it was instituted anyway, followed by current enforcement of rules) and general threads replacing discussion, against what old /tg/ was like with all those years ago before nazimod.

Sure, the board had its problems, spammers still existed and were just as obnoxious etc, but i feel like the soul of the board has died off. If we are forced to have moderation to the level that we are currently under, i would at least appreciate it if troll threads and shitposting were actually cleaned off the board in a timely fashion and community discussion was actually listened to instead of being cavalierly discarded. Sorry to grump up the nostalgia trip with my blogpost, but im drunk and tired.

That sounds like a problem player for certain. They're pulling actions the rest of the group is not okay with and using metagaming ("You can't do anything because your character didn't see me") as a shield to prevent any backlash. It's like that kid in school that stealthily antagonizes other students and uses the presence of the teacher to prevent them from doing anything back.

As forever DM I've learned to watch for this sort of problem player make sure one successful skill check doesn't equal freedom from the consequences of their actions. Hopefully your DM will come to realize this as well.

Honestly, I think we just kinda got tired somewhere near the end of the 3.PF constant hate threads. It has at least caused a greater awareness of non-dnd games but the constant sameness of threads for a year or so just kinda killed interest. Then the whole general thread made exposure to new and interesting weird shit less consistent so our brains aren't sparking as much while stuck in a rut.

Also the age demographic probably went up, we're here forever but working 10 hour/day jobs leaves a lot less enthusiasm to posting stories when we could go play games or sleep.

Mods don't like a lot of the fun things /tg/ used to get up to. In the last month, I've seen a 40k model thread deleted:

A meatbread thread deleted:
http://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/49466661/

A game design thread deleted:

http://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/49328678/

Every single board discussion thread that Hiroshima said was allowed:
http://archive.4plebs.org/tg/search/text/Hiro/deleted/deleted/type/op/

Plus numerous other threads that seem to have only been deleted because a mod didn't like the OP image. A few months ago, a thread with an OP image of a shoe was deleted and the only reason seems to be that the mod has a foot fetish.
>>
not sure if this counts because it was fairly recent and didn't really expand but I enjoyed the idea of 10k hero

The basic premise was that you would start an adventure with a pre-set number of rolls between the party, and if you ran out of rolls before the end, the quest was over and you lost. It kinda split into two different quests as well: Clockwork Knights and the Speedrun Quest

>>
>>49710965
The mods aren't necessarily the problem. Sure they delete threads, but that's not what's really killed /tg/ creativity. It's Apathy.

Not enough people are putting the effort into Writefagging, Homebrew, and art to keep the ball rolling. And even those that do put the effort into it are either shouted down by cynics for it not being the best idea ever, or confine themselves to /gdg/ the Storythread, or /wbg/ and are never seen by the majority of the community.

I'm currently attempting to start a revival movement on /tg/ fluff and game ideas. Starting with the Calvin and Hobbes RPG, I'm going to post a fair amount of Fluff, Homebrew, and other concepts in order to try and revive the spark we lost. From this, Here's what I've realized about /tg/:
>>
>>49711385

1. Generals kill creativity. Generals are containment boards, simple as that. They limit the views on any one idea to a group of like-minded people, which results in a stagnant group mindset. Don't post your idea or story to a general, post it to the main board

2. Daytime /tg/ is bad. Besides being slow, it's entirely filled with people who claim /tg/ is discussion only. These are the guys who always shout that /tg/ OC is shit. What's even worse is their arguments, claiming that "it's better that no content is made at all than have to deal with bad content, even if amazing content is made." Post your threads during the evening, at around 4:00PM MST, and you'll actually get people who won't shit upon your idea.

3. We need more tangential discussion. Threads feel too rigid. We all stick to the original post and rarely deviate. A lot of people forget that our best concepts sprang from an offhand comment halfway down a thread that was focusing on something completely different at the time.

4. /tg/ wants new stories. Desperately. That Guy Threads, Creation Threads, Dwarf/Elf threads. They're all threads that try and pose questions in the slim hopes that someone will come along, take one of their offhand comments, and write an interesting story, or tell something entertaining. Put the effort into taking an idea and writing something on it, and I guarantee you a response. Doesn't even matter if it's good or not. You made the effort.

Actually this, a lot of people drop their ideas into thos threads and then leave (and I'm not saying, that sharing ideas is bad), and only a handful of people remain in those threads, to sort it out and develop it furhter, and they are unable to keep up with other threads being bumped, so the setting general die off in under a week, when those people just can't bump those threads anymore. Not saying that it's horrible, kinda helps to cycle threads out.
