Last thread, some anon asked:

>what do you guys store models in?

Just so happens, we're getting rid of the spare bed in the computer room today, under which I store nearly all of my painted models, so, now that they are exposed to the light, I thought I'd include a picture along with the explanation:

I have one large old-style GW carrying case, and two of the smaller ones, as well as the box from an HP monitor I rescued from the "recycle" pile at the office and fitted with custom foam I carved myself to carry tanks, attack bikes, and dreadnoughts.

Scale 75 SC-77 Kunzite Alchemy is a pink metallic, SC-70 Amethyst Alchemy is a purple one (though fairly light).
SC-76 Tourmaline Alchemy is a brighter pink metallic.

Apparently it's quite a nice little game. I bought these guys blind, I'm not really clued up on the various D&D board games and miniature ranges, but it was £10 for the full lot of models, plus the 4 heroes and Hobgoblins from the MB game Dark World, which I did want.

Ahoy, /wip/. I need ideas.

I want to buy a Praetor Armored Assault Launcher (pic related) and magnetize it, such that the missile rack can be removed and replaced with a triple-barreled mortar, as per the Dominus Siege Bombard (which is built off the same chassis).

There's no official art or model of the Dominus, so I'm wondering what bits or such could be used to make a triple-barreled mortar cannon.
>>
>>49598025
Could bash together some Griffon guns.
>>
>>49598103
I did entertain the possibility. But where would I get the Griffon guns, short of ripping up some farm-fresh Griffons?

Kitbashing is thrifty at heart, and I'd rather not drop nearly $100 on bits.

In addition, I've seen the heavy mortar and it seems a bit small for the Dominus's statline (S10 AP3).

I have a barely used bottle of this and I'm almost tempted to throw it out already.

It's awful. The pigment and the base seperate rapidly, so it has to be shaken all the fucking time, and there are fucking -always- bubbles in it.

Adhesion to the model is inconsistent, no matter how much I clean it beforehand. Tiny bit will flake off raised edges with only minor provocation.

Coverage isn't even good.

I have literally nothing positive to say about this bottle of watered down spunk.
>>
>>49598025
What could work is getting some demolisher cannons from the baneblade kit. They're hull mounted so they can be bashed together with some plasticard to look like emplaced guns
>>

I spot a Rogue Trader land raider, and that makes me happy.
>>
>>49598331
That's on the shortlist, then. I can get the bits for rather cheap, too, though the gun is a bit short for my liking. I might lengthen it with some PVC. Any other thoughts?

a lot of the smaller items in the book like escape hatches, ammo dumps, basic barricades and tanglewire fences dont have models, and no one can ever agree on how big exactly an ammo dump should be-

I have a Necron scheme in mind, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it, and I'd like to hear some feedback/ideas.

>Overlord painted up very fancy. Gold and silver, shiny, glowing green, proper gem paint where possible.
>Elites in similar condition, but minor wear. Some heat stains, but minimal. Duller green glow. Heavy and Fast Attack in similar condition. These guys will vary a bit within the tier.
>Basic warriors/Immortals heat-stained all over, blasted by sunlight and UV radiation. Once were ornate gold and silver, now bare, heat-stained metal.

Would this be unified enough to use in a single army? And how would I go about doing it? I imagine washes over Leadbelcher?

they look alright mate but there's not a lot to criticize really. the basecoat looks a tiny but thick, but it's always hard to thin metallics especially when you're starting off and dont have shit like thinners.
if you have them, give them a wash with a shade like agrax earthshade or nuln oil, and then go over the raised areas again lightly with that silver, and you'll have the main body of work done fine. then it's just picking details.

No local stores carry the correct Windsor & Newton brushes, so I went with a Royal & Langnickel round brush and hoped for the best. Painting is fun but if there was a magical spray can that did perfect basecoating, shading and highlighting all in one I would use it on everything except characters. Once you've got a painting method down for an army, every duplicate of anything you paint feels dull and repetitive. Any shortcut that still looks good helps alleviate that.

No need to lie man, we all know you're the guy from last week who recasted an endless WAAAGH of orkz, and we support you're decision.

Also, army painter stuff might be good for that. Most people who paint large blobs of Nids use their stuff.

I can suggest this stuff, but you might be better off just to go buy another brush. I occasionally use Royal & Langnickel brushes myself, but I get them so cheaply that when they wear out, I just relegate them to drybrushing, mixing, or paint-moving duty.

Indeed! A couple of threads ago I explained the use of the [overpriced] Citadel mold line remover, but Micro Mark also sells a tool called a "seam scraper" (pic related) that does a similar job.

This just in: I can't highlight for dicks.

Better lighting, though. The shin plates have a coat of Coelia Greenshade on them, and I think it looks a lot better than the flat Castellan Green of the rest; should I clean up the Castellan elsewhere on the model and give the rest a coat of Greenshade? Closer to the color I was going for, but it's very... swirly, compared to plain Castellan. Not that that's a bad thing, this is a color test model for Diver Suit marines

Going to start painting my tau army, I just have a squad of fire warriors but I've decided on a hunter/ranger green forest scheme. Any idea on how to make forest (or jungle could probably work) bases? I saw a couple videos on YouTube but wasn't thrilled with how they came out.

Also what's a good brush and primer brand? I've been using citadel brushes and primer and it's insanely expensive
>>
>>49597532
I imagine they used plasticard, sprue bits and small rocks for a lot of them.
Base sculpting itself is probably done with greenstuff, or perhaps a cheaper alternative (like milliput), as it doesn't need to hold as fine details as a model would.

There's a lot of freedom involved in designing your bases, if it looks right, then it's the right material really.
You're painting over it most of the time anyway.
>>
>>49599581
Well, the Space Wolf homeworld is a frozen hellscape (there's a Fenris base on the image), that would be their home turf.
You can literally deploy them anywhere you'd like though.
But given that the 40k Wolves have lots of furs and such everywhere, perhaps winter landscape bases would work best?

I think it would absolutely work. Personally I would:
>Base everything Leadbealcher, shade with Nuln oil.
>Highlight Overlord to pure silver. Use Ironbreaker and Runefang steel.
>Repeat on Elites, but use less silver. Maybe a recess shade of Agrax earthshade.
>Use more Agrax on Troops, possibly an all over shade after the Nuln oil dries. You could even let the shades mix a bit while still wet. Edge highlight with silver, make it uneven and worn.
I find that simple colour schemes are the best ones for a clean, consistent result.

Just basic Guardsmen?

Personally I'd go for chinaman. I imagine they would have that kit.

Otherwise the standard for home casting seems to be oomoo silicone and "liquid Plastic" (aka Smooth-On)

"How to cast MiniaturesHQ.pdf" covers the basics of home casting. Personally though my experiences with homecasting led me to just give up. It requires a lot of money to be invested to make it worthwhile and the initial trial and error further adds to the cost. unless you need like 200+ dudes might be cheaper to just buy the geedubs.

Or you can use a pen that you take the ink out of, but pretty much any cylinder will give you the same effect, and to be honest, it's nurgle, the messier the better. I'm considering doing a small nurgle force just to practice my sculpting on.
>>
>>49603602
>>49603592
>>49603334
Not the anon you were talking to, but you are falling into the most common, and fucking dumbest mistake that people do when sculpting nurgle stuff on top of armor. They just leave a blob of misshapen shit on it.

Look at the Plague-marines, both Forge-worlds and Games Workshops. They have growths going on, but they are either Blended into the armor, covered up by armor or breaking through armor.

it annoys the living shit out of me when people don't blend it together and just leaves a chunky mess, "because that's nurgle". Nurgle isn't about looking like a fucking hardened bowl of pudding fasted to the side of someones shoulder. Don't get lazy, blend those tumors in with the tank, then once hardened, use green stuff to make it look like it's been pushed out from between the armor plates.
>>
>>49603736
Thanks for the input. I will keep it I mind next time I work with green stuff
>>
>>49603652
Mech is even more ineffective to cast.

Homecasting is really only worthwhile if you need to make a ton of models. Ork Boyz, Guardsmen and gaunts are really where they can shine.
>>
>>49603807
>>49603736
Liquid greens stuff is the best if you want to nurgleize something. just slap it on around those tumors to get a disgusting affect.

It's terrible for gap filling but for getting that dirty nurgle look it's amazing.

very standard: dirt with flock.
making it look better: add in some stuff like rocks, or rusted half-buried bits of metal or pipes.
basically look at completed models and see how people do the basing, theres no real end really with how far you can go.

I like that theme. Just a bunch of bad blokes in hoods. There's big hood, standard hood, more-than-normally-ghostly hood, and little hood who cant into conceal face.

First go at a Terminator, 4th model for the army. How'd I do?
>>
>>49605597
I would focus on the fundamentals of painting before you start trying the fancy stuff. Work on your layering and shading, to make sure your colours are smooth and vivid, then learn how to highlight properly, then you can start with the OSL
>>
>>49605597
Realised I sound like an asshole. Looks great for your 4th model but you've tried to do too much too soon, like the kid who buys a £1000 guitar but a really shit amp. On the left leg you've shaded your off-white armour and not cleaned it up afterwards by layering over it. Simple things like that, you're nearly there though.

How'd y'all like my spooky scary skull clowns?

Nearly finished my final dark troupe for my masque of midnight sorrow. Only ones still to do are the 2 leftmost clowns who are just basecoated and washey washed. Then just transfers and sealing before onto their starweaver.

Daylight troupe of the masque are all smiling, and the twilight ones all have the doctors masks.

Agreed. Works fine in an airbrush. It is with noting a primer doesn't need to totally cover the model in one coat. It is there just to provide a good surface for your basecoat to cling to.

That dried mud effect on the Realm of Death base... is that sculpted, or has some bright spark brought out a "crackle" paint?
>>
>>49607279
Lately, DBZ abridged
>>
>>49607356
Crackle Paint, GW has their own these days, in a two colours.
Given the colour, I'd say that's Agrellan Earth, apply it thick and let it dry.
The thicker the layer is, the bigger the cracks will get.
If you put another colour underneath it'll be visible through the cracks, you can make lava field bases that way for instance.

The other colour is Martian Ironearth, which is Mars red as you might imagine.

weapons: if they interfere with your ability to paint the model, leave them off. If they don't, then it's personal preference.
bases: I prefer to leave them off, but again it's probably preference.

Finally finished my Vindicare Assassin after 3 tries. Getting the right tone of black-blue was murder.

Camera won't even capture the detail I put so much effort into getting. At least I got the spy mask right.

Please don't be potato on me, phone...
>>
>>49608071
Looks pretty good
maybe add some more accents on the metal?
>>
>>49608071
Your metallics look ridiculously grainy in that pic. That might just be the camera, as metallics are notoriously difficult to photograph, but if they look like that IRL then I might suggest thinning them down more and doing multiple thin coats. If that doesn't work, then try another brand, because metallics should not look like that.
>>
>>49603913
I had the same idea. Was going to make some drones, use micro LEDs, carefully drill space for wires in a flying stand, coin battery under the base, etc. Never got around to it but in theory should work and look awesome.
>>
>sideways
Well, at least it's not upside down.

>>49608107
I wanted to deliberately mute the assassin. He's supposed to be stealthy; it made sense to me for his base and background to be 'louder' than him. Except for the mask, obviously.
>>
>>49608128
Don't worry, it's almost certainly the camera. It even completely missed the soft blue highlighting I did; the only place it's even remotely visible is the right shoulder.

I use Vallejo droppers with a wet pallete; most of the metals in that image had to go on twice to avoid streaking.

>>
>>49608144
There's a difference between 'muted' and being lost in solid black. Change up the hues on select details and you'd be surprised how much better the model looks. Even just making the rifle a slightly different shade of black can make a difference.
>>
>>49607425
Damn. Ive been out of the hobby for a long time but thats a really good innovation.
>>
>>49608225
Crackle medium is a little more flexible (in that you can colour it as you see fit), but GW knows what they're doing when it comes to offering convenience.

Same goes for the new "jewel" paints, which are translucent gel paints for making gemstones, much easier than a multi-stage highlight.
>>
>>49608225
You're entirely right, and I actually tried to do that. The gun is highlighted with a different color than the suit.

Unfortunately it looks like the camera pretty much ate my highlights. You'll have to take my word for it, I don't have anything better.
>>
>>49608310

>>49608222
>>
>>49608225
Likewise. The amount of things I can do with this makes me at least semi-erect.

>>49607425
How do these handle colour blends? Normal paint will obviously mess with the process, but how badly? Are there other brands with more 'common' colours?
>>
>>49608257
Well that answers my question, and holy shit gem paints. Only issue is they come in even shittier pots these days, I might have to see if I still have some empty glass paint jars around and syringe the contents over.
>>
>>49608373
>>49608474
>How do these handle colour blends? Normal paint will obviously mess with the process, but how badly? Are there other brands with more 'common' colours?

A) You can simply paint over the end result
B) Mixing the paint with other colours works, but I imagine that it'll weaken the effect somewhat.
C) Vallejo for instance makes a transparent Crackle Medium, which does the same thing, but it's colourless, so you won't see it if you paint over it.

Just keep in mind that the crackle effect is quite delicate, don't put too much pressure on it, or it may break.
>>
>>49599747
one of the players at my local club liked playing green tides in apoc games, and to make sure we'd deploy in time he'd bring a bucket full of them and just pour hundreds of boys directly on the table.

When moving them he'd just take the backfield line of boys and put them on the fronlines and call it a movement.

All painted. Terribly painted, but painted.
>>
>>49608474
Take a good look around, there's quite a few neat technological innovations (often carried over from the more serious modelling side of our hobby).
Some of which GW has released themselves as Technicals, but plenty more exist.
>>
>>49608186

>>
>>49609003
>Head to toe bright orange rust

Plague Marines that love Papa Nurgle so much they spend all their time polishing his beloved symbol, while the rest of their armour crumbles away around them.
>>
>>49609029
Yeah i think its the red samurai looking armour plates and the almost kabuki looking face
>>
>>49609212
I get the rust and decaying part. And frankly I like the clean nurgle symbol. But what I am thinking off is the base colours, the colours they were before becoming plauge marines.
>>
>>49609003
When you say you don't want death guard... do you mean how they're usually depicted (green) or how they're actually meant to look (white)?

When I played Nurgle I did what most people did and went all-out with pus and slime and rainbow mutations. But I think a more sombre, washed out corpselike palette could be very effective.
