Historical fantasy edition

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

>Examples of games that qualify
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_miniature_wargames
Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).

>How did you get into non-GW games?

GW prices got higher and the rules got worse.

Took a long time to find alternative games I liked and even longer to find groups who played them but it was worth it in the end.
>>
>>49325935
>How did you get into non-GW games?

Got into historicals via something looking interesting and a couple of the slightly older crowd at GW going 'ooh' and playing it, and I followed because I've always been one to go after games I find interesting rather than just play what the majority do. From there it was just no looking back, because once free of the need to keep up with whatever was going on with 40k/fantasy, other stuff just got more play time, and there was no bias against doing things other than historicals either.

The only thing that didn't cause it to happen even sooner was the lack of good internet coverage, both in terms of connections and actual pages for stuff.

I never got into GW games, since all my friends are ex-GW players and scared me off.

Otherwise, I'm pretty new, I got interested in historicals a bit ago and now I'm mostly lurking this thread to check out the misc other things.

No need to be into geedubs games to be into non-GW games, but usually those are the most recognized and cited names when you mention you are into wargaming.

Pretty much what >>49330382 said. Warfare is 90% kilt, and Paolo is running around shitting out game systems and models trying to be somewhat productive and save a game he cant help but kill.

That said, the Babylon models were really quite nice, and if you can find the Warfare books I highly recommend trying it out. Tactics is okay, but Dust Battlefield is Warfare Lite and therefore shit.

Still love the models, though I wish they weren't made out of that rubbery plastic shit.

Well, Paolo made Dust Tactics. Tile based, sorta meh, but fun. Then Andy Chambers sticks his dick in and makes Warfare, and it's a ton of fun - rules aren't too complicated, list building is fun, and overall it's a solid skirmish game.

Paolo does not like people enjoying something he didn't directly create. I'm fuzzy on the details, but support gets pulled, game gets tossed around a company or two, and sort of peters off. Dust Battlefield comes along, and it's essentially Tactics without the tiles - where Warfare was it's own, unique game, Battlefield feels sort of...vacant? Certainly not terribly fun, but that's my opinion as a biased Warfare fanboy, so take it with a grain of salt.

A kickstarter occurs at some point with the aforementioned Babylon expansion, and suddenly there's Dust everywhere.

>>49330643
This, too. Konflict '47 is showing a lot of promise, and I like their walkers a lot. Could definitely try that too.

Oh well, I was overstating a bit...there's one guy here who's enthusiastic about Malifaux and convinced me to try a game, so I'll soon have a Kaeris starter, plus I already got from another guy a box of Metal Gamin.

>Do you think there'd be any problems using walkers from one for the other?

I have not seen them side by side, so I'm not sure. However, from the vid I saw on Beasts of War of the playthrough game, the Allied light walker looked like it could work.
>>
>>49331005
Is that flyer yoooge af? I mean, 32mm?
>>
>>49331119
They're not terribly large - and that one's converted a bit.
Trying to think of something close to it...if you're familiar with 40k, it's got a similar wingspan to a valkyrie. Hell, I can post pics when I get home, if folks are curious about scale.
>>
>>49331189
Having some awg pics in thread is always welcome! But take em at your own pace, no hurry
>>
I know this is probably more a /hwg/ question, but if I wanted to play Bolt Action (and therefore Konflict 47 maybe) do people play with official models or just any 28mm WW2 minis?
>>
>>49331349
Any 28mm WW2 minis are fine. People use 1/48 tanks all the time, as they look more in scale with the figures. Bolt Action uses 1/72 planes however, similar to how Flames of War uses 1/115 planes.

>>
>>49331406
Oooh, that's actually a pretty damn awesome model! Really nice weathered, dusty metal, look to it, 5/5. But won't it be tricky to make the transfers look worn?
>>
>>49331487
Yeah, very probably. I jumped the gun a bit because I didn't think to ask folks in the WIP threads if they knew of any DAK transfers in that scale. Was halfway through weathering when someone gave me a link.

It'll probably look sloppy, but I've got a mound of vehicles here. We'll just say he was the newest guy out of the factory or something.
>>
>>49331487
Not him, but that's really not that hard, even if you apply them yourself. Paint the basecoat, apply some shiny varnish to where you want to put the transfer, wait till it dries, apply matte varnish, and the edges won't be visible. Then just weather the model with your chosen technique, and make chipping on the transfer too with the base color. This could work after painting the entire model, but it'll be more tricky to do.

>>49331535
Check Perry and Warlord, and I'm pretty sure you can find lots of 1:48 decals.

I don't think so at all. At least K47 has no problems if you use walkers (or anything) from different manufacturers.
I don't know how specific the Dust rules are with weapons etc, but in K47 you have stuff like "light AT gun" without a more specific definition how that thing actually looks like.
>>
>>49331535
check Rubicon models. They sell (not cheap sadly) for example pic related.
Technically its 1/56, but the difference between those two scales is minimal, especially when it comes to decals.

I have, it's an OK system but I can't help but think they've missed a trick by making actual miniatures.

The bikes are fair enough since getting those in scale is next to impossible but rather than make cars I would have just made weapons and armour packs you can use with regular hot wheels cars, it'd make the game massively customisable out of the box.

I just wish they had released the infantry in actual decent, unpainted plastics instead of the "painted" one we got.

By painted I mean that they're cast is a very flimsy, rubbery plastic that doesn't handle details well, are glued together so that it's extra hard to reach large parts of the model if you try to paint it, and are sprayed with a thick layer of primer to conceal even more details, but shows off the mold-lines very well. And then they stick decals on top of the primer. But if you just paint the faces pink and give them a wash, you get finely sculpted models (and poorly produced) that look okay if you view them from afar and lower your standards.

Yes, I'm a bit bitter. DUST was such a waste of good sculpts. It's as if they couldn't decide between painted and unpainted models, so they went for the worst of both worlds and cast it in the worst plastic they could find. The vehicles are gorgeous, though.
>>
>>49340338
Haha! Small world then. I was wondering when you'd get back to me on those Heavy Infantry. Been a bit busy getting things together for a convention I'm demoing WZR at this weekend though, so I haven't been searching for my Light Infantry. I'll make sure to dig them out of the garage tomorrow morning when I get home from work. I may have less than 2 full squads like I thought, but I know I'll have enough for a full squad to send to you, and enough for myself to recast for my own needs.

Looking forward to those pictures, mate.
>>
>>49340338
I get to play with people every now and then, but it's nice to be able to play with my toys whenever I want. Because scheduling games is a hassle.
>>
>>49340377
Sent the pics...a small world indeed, but I guess the two of us are interested in old Warzone in this thread, so no big surprise. And for what its worth, I'd be perfectly fine with recasts too, I'm not too fussed about original models if they do the job and of great quality - some originals were surprisingly shitty quality, mostly the minis from the US, has a box of US and UK/Europe Etoiles Mortants, the US had lots of holes, miscasts on the rank and file (sergeant and hero was fine), while the other box is perfectly cast with no deformations.
>>
>>49340345
Is there any particular system of theirs you'd recommend, or should I just go with what fits the genres I like?
>>
>>49340443

Go with what you like: they have somenthing for everyone: From Dinosaur Safaris to Space Dogfights (not literally).

They have mostly skirmish rulesets & some large scale ones - but those aren't all that great, IMHO.
>>
>>49340414
Yeah, recasts don't bother me either, so long as they're competently made. I got a story of my own for the old minis, I had bought a sealed box of Etoiles Mortants(beautifully scultped by Kev White) and a few loose minis. When I brke the seal and had a look through my haul I found that the Etoiles captain was missing her right arm! Her sword was there but the arm itself was missing, I was more amused than annoyed at that, 20 years on and I get a mispack.

Just my bloody luck, eh?
>>
>>49340490
I'm tempted by their post-apocalyptic system, I've been looking for something to scratch my Mad Max and Fallout itch in tabletop form. It will have to wait until I can afford $15 for a PDF, though.

Are the rules different from each other, or do they use basically the same core rules for every game, and then swap out some extra rules to fit the specific genre?
>>
>>49340362

was no option to get them on sprues?
i saw primed and premium, but assumed there was still 'raw'
wow, that'd suck for me.
>>
>>49340527
Heh, that really sucks, especially that you can't write an email to Excelsior or Target to send you a replacement...thankfully both of my boxes were complete, and for the second one, I bought it as part of a bigger army, so I also got a Valerie Duval and a flamethrower specialist too, both great models. I need to order some grenadiers and LFT specialists from Prince August to make two full squads, thank fuck he sells those.
>>
>>49340534

All of their rulesets are (mostly) based on Chain Reaction & Swordplay rulesets (available for free) - but with wrinkles of their own.

You can easily start by downloading those two, and 'juicing them up' to your liking.
>>
>>49340546
No, not what I remember. There was an option to order pro-painted models (presumably cast in a decent material) from their website, but that was of course really, really expensive.
>>
>>49340573
Thanks, this looks like great stuff.
>>
>>49340558
Indeed, I've got the grenadier girl and the light flame thrower, need a Valerie of my own, but I'm pretty happy with the new resin one that Prodos does, so it doesn't bother me much. Just wish she had a bit more of dynamic pose, nothing flashy, but more exciting than standing almost awkwardly in the open.
>>

PA sells the Valerie mini too, a really great mini, but the photo sucks ass...it's in an awkward phose when it comes to photography, the old one looks much better on picture.

The new one looks like it has really long limbs to me, I don't like it. Same goes for the standard ETs - do you have a pic for the new Valerie with the old figures? Also, the newer Siege of the Citadel pose isn't anything to write home about either, but it's not that bad.
>>
>>49340636
I can take some pictures of Val and the girls tomorrow with the light infantry. I think the long limbs thing you're experiencing is the difference in scale, old school warzone was always heroic scale like GW, whereas Prodos' is more of a truescale, well, for most of their stuff at least.

I'm hesitant about backing Siege of the Citadel, on one hand I want to play that game, on the other I keep to one rule when it comes to KS, no games, the sheer amount of projects I've seen come to a screeching halt, become backed up with delays, fall apart in a mess of dogey dealings just leaves me not wanting to deal with that stress. It's why I stick to comic books on that platform. And yeah, the Bauhaus character do look pretty weak sculpt wise. I think the best ones are the Mishima character followed by the Imperials, I really dig that Sean Gallagher they've got.
>>
>>49340362
I have made my peace with DUST simply by ignoring rules and infantry and all their pre-painted "premium" stuff. I just pretend its a nice line of vehicles (which are luckily available as kit as well these days) and bought a few i like.
>>
>>49340718
Thanks.

As for Siege...well, Modiphius might be slow, but they deliver. I went in for the basic pledge since nothing really groundbreaking was announced for the 150$ level.
>>
>>49340724
The vehicles are fantastic, and cast in a much better, hard plastic. The decals-on-primer thing feels a lot less weird with vehicles, too. I don't remember if the smaller details like guns and such were cast in the shitty rubber, it's been a while.

My dad is really into DUST, and collects the models (but rarely plays). He even bought the comic book, but it's pretty garbage. There's surprisingly little mecha fights, the main focus is on pretty boring softcore porn and the usual Nazi BDSM cliches (although for some weird reason, DUST makes a point that the Germans aren't actually Nazis anymore. They look and act exactly the same so I have no idea why they even decided to make that part of the lore). The fluff of DUST is pretty bad in general. Great robots, though.
>>
>>49340768
Their postage rates to Australia are pretty good, so I may jump in on it. Though I did go pretty deep in on the new Lady Death comic kickstarter, so it'll be tight squeezing them both in.
>>
>>49340802
>the main focus is on pretty boring softcore porn and the usual Nazi BDSM cliches

Now i have to buy the comic book too i guess...

>DUST makes a point that the Germans aren't actually Nazis anymore

To sell more stuff, especially in Germany. There is the somewhat popular (and very trashy) novel series "Stahlfront" (and several spinoffs) in Germany, and the first thing they established was that the heroes of these books, i.e. Germans with flying saucers hiding in Neuschwabenland/Antarctica are in fact not Nazis... basically a requirement to sell the books in public without them getting banned from book stores (or maybe even consequences for the writer/publisher).

>I don't remember if the smaller details like guns and such were cast in the shitty rubber, it's been a while.

I have the not-IS-3 tank and a self-propelled heavy mortar and they are 100% hard plastic, even the tiny machine guns.

I intend to get at least 2 of the german walkers as well, the Luthers just look to good to ignore them.
>>
>>49340853
>Now i have to buy the comic book too i guess...
Spare your wallet and your eyes. I bought it too, and it is truly garbage. It cemented for me that Paolo is a hack that should stick to just drawing things.
>>
>>49340853
It's not even that much of the lesbian Nazi torture stuff, just one scene from what I remember. Honestly, if you want Nazi BDSM porn, there's a ton of better stuff out there. I got the feeling that DUST just did that because it's one of the stock Weird World War tropes you have to check off for some reason, like cyborg gorillas, Nazi zombies, Tesla tanks and gasmasks everywhere.
And I'm not a prude, I don't mind fanservice. But that's also kind of the only thing the comic has going for it, the rest is just boring.
>>
>>49340890

Yeah, it was a bizarre choice on their part - you think it'd be cheaper to release them unprimed. That's my biggest gripe - the rubbery plastic sucks, but I could deal with that if it wasn't covered in an inch of primer.

Still trying to find a safe way of stripping them that doesn't damage the material.
>>

>and all women look like they're constantly constipated.

So...like all of their female models then?

Seriously, Dust has the worst female face sculpts I've ever seen.

I've seen worse, but they're definitely not good.
And the rubber doesn't help. Not even painting them helps.
I'm pretty sure the painter replaced the barrel with a metal rod, because otherwise it would be bent like a banana.
>>
>>49340935
It's not even worth the time spent searching and downloading it.
>>
>>49341045
Tina looks quite nice actually. But not nice enough to justify the 12€ they are asking for that mini (unpainted).
>>
>>49341594
To be fair, the newer sculpts (Babylon, etc) are of a higher quality than the older stuff - at least, it is where they didn't re-use assets.
>>
That one game that you really want to play, and maybe you even bought and painted a few models for it, but you know you will never find another person who've even heard about it.
Which game is it?

Alternatively, which relatively obscure game did a friend convince you to buy models for ("So I have someone to play with. It will be great!"), only for him to change his mind and lose interest before you even got started? The latter is Dystopian Wars for me.
>>
>>49342551
Freebooters Fate.

I have a box of the Amazons and a box of the Imperial Armada, I got the expansions, but I got no one in my city to play it with nor will anyone I know want to try it out. It's a shame, because the models are lovely and the system is damn fun.
>>
>How did you get into non-GW games?
A buddy of mine had the idea of running a GoT game with heavy focus on politics and war, and I had the idea that we should get some miniatures and incorporate wargaming into the campaign.
The campaign idea fell through, but I was halfway through homebrewing some rules and thought "Fuck it, me and my other buddy will just buy some models and have fun wargaming. " now we bought some models for /hwg/ and we're what to branch out into fantasy and sci-fi.

Honestly though, I just like painting models.
>>
>>49342723
Freebooters Fate has gorgeous models, but I've never even heard about anyone playing it, even online. Which is the problem with most miniature games.
I really like that it has a distinctive theme that sets it apart from all the other obscure skirmish games (especially since the majority of all miniature games the past fifteen years go for the same steampunk, "dark fantasy" or generic sci fi themes).
>>
>>49343079
>>49342723
I'd kill to see a video of dudes actually playing freebooters fate. Also really enjoy the goblin crews mixed in with the random orcs.

Nothing wrong with having a GoT-themed SAGA army.

Tusk is ancient but good fun for hunting. I recently found my copy of Adventures in Jimland, which has expeditions exploring unknown land - each player's expedition is independent (down to one player), and if you don't have someone to play hostile encounters they tend to be fairly straightforward to resolve.

Two Hour Wargames have a bunch of solo stuff and are good for campaign systems.

Don Featherstone's Solo Wargaming is a good book, as is the Solo Wargaming Guide, but both are more aimed at military campaigns. Tony Bath's Setting Up a Wargames Campaign is good too.

One recommendation that pops up a lot is to assign named generals to your forces and your opposition, often going down to individual unit commanders. Give them quality ratings, a personality trait, and let that influence how you play. If someone's a brash idiot and their overall commander isn't that organised, they might be put in a position where they can do something tremendously stupid, for example.

Pulp Alley is excellent. Haven't seen the solo deck yet, but it's a wonderful game with 1-5 players, in my experience.

FiveCore, of course. He's just put out two new supplements, one for FiveCore about patrolling an occupied city, one for his latest (non-FiveCore) SF game about exploring mostly-barren worlds. That one I have tried, despite not owning the rules it's aimed at - turns out if you write the word "MAGIC" in various places, it does run well for exploratory parties of low-level OD&D adventurers scouting small bodies floating throughout the planes on behalf of powerful wizards.

Can you post some opinions if you do? I'm doing 28mm these days, but I'm not above doubling ranges and using a big board... or just abstracting stuff and not caring that a rifle has a 12" range or whatever.

>How did you get into non-GW games?
I started in 40k, but my store always had a selection of other shiny game models. So as their price went up I branched out and looked after whatever new thing came out.

Scientifically accurate bikini barbarian intense simulator full of math here has two solo scenarios (one being a generic dungeon crawl with random encounter blips and the other being a ripoff of the bit in Conan where he and Subotai turtle the fuck up to fight the numerically superior bad guys who are trying to re kidnap the Princess of whatever). I'm making paper bits for the former currently.

I used to play Covenant, way back in the day. Last local player moved away, ended up selling my fleet.

Hopefully they're blowing up Prussians and the Polish in some far away land.

Pic related, my TDO. Used to whore myself out on their forums a bit. I do miss the game, it was great fun.

I did hold a few test games when my friend left, but most folks dont have the patience to learn a whole new system it seems. Had some folks pop by, say how fun it looked, then never come back. Such is life it seems, but hey, good memories in any case.

Still miffed they changed my Colossus Robots from lasers to guns. That killed one of my favorite strategies for the Euclid - drop a quartet way in the back on some out of the way terrain piece, and have fun tossing out RB4 dice on small targets. But nooo, now they have guns. Bah.

Eh, they nerfed the shit out of the euclid, too. 300 points before you add the robots.

Every time I was playing with my old group, I'd get several people commenting how good the game looked, but no-one ever took it up.

Don't even know where to look to start a new group. The old group was a uni group, so it was a mixed bunch. Around here it seems to be specific rpg/boardgame/wargaming groups. I know wargamers should be the easiest to get into it, but I often had more luck with the boardgame folk.

Hey there /awg/ dudes, do you know of any good guides for learning how to paint minis?
>>
>>49347147
Warhammer TV on youtube has some pretty simple yet good beginner tutorials if you ignore all the obvious citadel product placements.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwdh3MTrFq3sXlB4ct8B-Fg

Besides that, /WIP/ has lots of stuff in the OP that might be useful.

Besides that: other youtube channels, i like these two, but they are not as beginner friendly as Duncan on WarhammerTV

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG2Wj3xRJPqAAOOsJ5Q6ssQ

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3MqSyG5HkjKseY5QLhS4dA

Besides that, just paint. Watching videos and reading guides helps you only so much. You need to paint yourself to learn.
Get some nice minis you like and start.
