It is 333 years since the Battle of Vienna, which took place after the Imperial city of Vienna had been besieged by the Ottoman Empire for two months. The battle was fought by the Habsburg Monarchy, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire, under the command of King John III Sobieski against the invading Muslim Ottoman Empire and its vassal and tributary states, and took place at Kahlenberg Mountain near Vienna. The Viennese garrison was led by Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg, an Austrian subject of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I. The battle marked the first time Poland and the Holy Roman Empire had cooperated militarily against the Turks, and it is often seen as a turning point in history, after which "the Ottoman Turks ceased to be a menace to the Christian world".

The opposing military forces were commanded by Grand Vizier Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha. The Ottoman army numbered approximately 90,000–300,000 men (according to documents on the order of battle found in Kara Mustafa's tent, initial strength at the start of the campaign was 170,000 men). They began the siege on 14 July 1683. The Turkish forces consisted, among other units, of 60 ortas of Janissaries (12,000 men paper-strength) with an observation army of c. 70,000 men watching the countryside. The decisive battle took place on 11 September, after the united relief army had arrived.

Historians suggest the battle marked the turning point in the Ottoman–Habsburg wars, a 300-year struggle between the Holy Roman and Ottoman Empires. In fact, during the 16 years following the battle, the Austrian Habsburgs gradually recovered and dominated southern Hungary and Transylvania, which had been largely cleared of Turkish forces. The battle is also noted for including the largest known cavalry charge in history.

The battle started before all units were fully deployed. At 4:00 am, the Ottomans attacked, seeking to interfere with the deployment of the Holy League troops. Charles of Lorraine moved forward with the Imperial army on the left and the other Imperial forces in the center and, after heavy fighting, took several key positions. By noon the Imperial army had already severely mauled the Turks and come close to breakthrough. Though shattered, the Ottoman army did not crumble at that moment.

Mustafa Pasha launched his counterattacks with most of his force, but held back some of the elite Janissary and Sipahi units for a simultaneous assault on the city. The Ottoman commanders had intended to take Vienna before Sobieski arrived, but time ran out. Their sappers had prepared a large, final detonation under the Löbelbastei to breach the walls. In total, ten mines were set to explode but they were located by the defenders and disarmed.

In the early afternoon a large battle started on the other side of the battlefield as the Polish infantry advanced on the Ottoman right flank. Instead of concentrating on the battle with the relief army, the Ottomans continued their efforts to force their way into the city. Hence, the Poles could make good progress, and by 4:00 pm they had taken the village of Gersthof, which would serve as a base for their massive cavalry charge. The Ottomans were in a desperate position, between the Polish and Imperial forces. Charles of Lorraine and John III Sobieski both decided on their own to resume the offensive and finish off the enemy.

The Imperials resumed the offensive on the left front at 3:30 pm. At first they encountered fierce resistance and were stopped. This did not last long, however, and by 5:00 pm they had made further gains and were now very close to the central Turkish position. As they were preparing to storm it, they could see the Polish cavalry in action.
>>
>>49292038
It is recorded that the Polish cavalry slowly emerged from the forest to the cheers of the onlooking infantry, which had been anticipating their arrival. At 4:00 pm the Polish hussars first entered into action, battering the Turkish lines. At that point the Turkish vizier decided to leave this position and retreat to his headquarters in the main camp further south. However, by then many Ottomans were already leaving the battlefield.

At around 6:00 pm the Polish king ordered the cavalry attack in four groups, three Polish and one from the Holy Roman Empire. Eighteen thousand horsemen charged down the hills, the largest cavalry charges in history. John III Sobieski led the charge at the head of 3,000 Polish heavy lancers, the famed "Winged Hussars". The Lipka Tatars who fought on the Polish side wore a sprig of straw in their helmets to distinguish themselves from the Tatars fighting on the Ottoman side. The charge easily broke the lines of the Ottomans, who were exhausted and demoralized and soon started to flee the battlefield. The cavalry headed straight for the Ottoman camps and Kara Mustafa's headquarters, while the remaining Viennese garrison sallied out of its defenses to join in the assault.

The Ottoman troops were tired and dispirited following the failure of both the attempt at sapping and the assault on the city and the advance of the Holy League infantry. The cavalry charge was one last deadly blow. Less than three hours after the cavalry attack, the Christian forces had won the battle and saved Vienna. The first Christian officer who entered Vienna was Margrave Ludwig of Baden, at the head of his dragoons. Afterwards Sobieski paraphrased Julius Caesar's famous quotation (Veni, vidi, vici) by saying "Veni, vidi, Deus vicit"--"I came, I saw, God conquered".

The Ottomans lost at least 20,000 men during the siege, while their losses during the battle with Sobieski's forces amounted to around 15,000 dead and 5,000 captured. Casualties of the allied relief force under Sobieski's command were much smaller, amounting to approximately 3,500 dead and wounded, including 1,300 Poles.

The Holy League troops and the Viennese took a large amount of loot from the Ottoman army, which King John Sobieski vividly described in a letter to his wife a few days after the battle: "Ours are treasures unheard of . . . tents, sheep, cattle and no small number of camels . . . it is victory as nobody ever knew before, the enemy now completely ruined, everything lost for them. They must run for their sheer lives . . . General Starhemberg hugged and kissed me and called me his saviour."

On 25 December 1683, Kara Mustafa Pasha was executed in Belgrade in the approved manner, by strangulation with a silk rope pulled by several men on each end, by order of the commander of the Janissaries.

This is a truly historic battle with a great deal of strategic nuance, calling on every aspect of pike-and-shot warfare. Both armies are exotic and colorful with a diverse range of troops, and there's a real cinematic glory to the whole thing. By Fire And Sword is a dedicated ruleset for the era, curious players should give it a look.

It is 73 years since the raid on Gran Sasso, called Operation Eiche ("Oak"), which was the rescue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini by German paratroopers led by Major Otto-Harald Mors and Waffen-SS commandos. The airborne operation was personally ordered by Adolf Hitler, planned by Harald Mors, and approved by General Kurt Student.

On the night between 24 and 25 July 1943, a few weeks after the Allied invasion of Sicily and bombing of Rome, the Italian Grand Council of Fascism voted a motion of no confidence against Mussolini. On the same day, the king replaced him with Marshal Pietro Badoglio and had him arrested. Mussolini was being transported around Italy by his captors, while Otto Skorzeny was tracking him.

Intercepting a coded Italian radio message, Skorzeny used the reconnaissance provided by agents and informants to determine that Mussolini was being imprisoned at Campo Imperatore Hotel, a ski resort at Campo Imperatore in Italy's Gran Sasso massif, high in the Apennine Mountains. Skorzeny's 26 SS troopers joined the team of 82 Fallschirmjäger to rescue Mussolini in a high-risk glider mission. The commandos landed their dozen DFS 230 gliders on the mountain; only one crashed, causing minor injuries. The Fallschirmjäger and Skorzeny's special troopers then overwhelmed Mussolini's captors (200 well-equipped Carabinieri guards) without a single shot being fired; this was also due to the fact that General Fernando Soleti of the Polizia, who flew in with Skorzeny, told them to stand down or be executed for treason. Skorzeny attacked the radio operator and his equipment, then he formally greeted Mussolini with "Duce, the Führer has sent me to set you free!", to which Mussolini replied "I knew that my friend would not forsake me!"

Mussolini was flown from Campo Imperatore to Vienna, where he stayed overnight at the Hotel Imperial and was given a hero's welcome. The operation on the ground at Campo Imperatore was in fact led by First Lieutenant Baron Georg Freiherr von Berlepsch, commanded by Major Otto-Harald Mors and under orders from General Kurt Student, all Fallschirmjäger officers; but Skorzeny stewarded the Italian leader first into Rome and eventually into Berlin, right in front of the cameras. After a pro-SS propaganda coup at the behest of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler and propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, Skorzeny and his Special Forces (SS-Sonderverband z. b. V. "Friedenthal") of the Waffen-SS were granted the majority of the credit for the operation. The Friedenthaler of the SS-Reichssicherheitshauptamt were for the Waffen-SS what the Brandenburgers were for the Wehrmacht and Abwehr.

The operation granted a rare late-war public relations opportunity to Hermann Göring. Mussolini was made leader of the Italian Social Republic (a German puppet state consisting of the German-occupied portion of Italy). Otto Skorzeny gained a large amount of success from this mission; he received a promotion to Sturmbannführer, the award of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and fame that led to his "most dangerous man in Europe" image. Winston Churchill himself described the mission as "one of great daring".

This is an exciting and novel operation that could have gone wrong in a hundred different ways- making it perfect for the tabletop. Refer to PDF related for some gaming tips.

Ideas for the next project are welcome. Some from the last thread include 'Civilians', 'Wildlife' and 'that-boring-arse-unit-you-can-normally-never-be-bothered-with'.

With a spare weekend and a few days to go until the end of the project, I picked up a Perry AWI commander model to paint up as the leader of my force in the 7YW. I suck at painting faces, think I need a 'redder' undercoat (and to thin my fucking paints and not to drown it in washes). I am really happy with the red by now though, and the yellow is getting better.

Bitches love desiccated coconut...

I bought a big pack of Woodland Scenics tree armatures and one of fine leaf foliage. There any good online guides for this shit?
>>
>>49292258
wait so its actually desiccated coconut?

Either way I would recommend making a thick paste of flock and PVA, probably 50/50, and applying it - gives a flatter less powdery look, and it will look like their feet are actually sinking in and making marks instead of looking like the snow is being sucked up their legs like some kind of gas. Just a suggestion, I guess you've already done most of your minis like this so it might break consistency, but it gives a much more realistic appearance imo.

Nah mate, just that somebody already made that joke.
I use citadel snow mixed with PVA glue 50/50 and then I sprinkle more snow on top when it's on the base. It looks better than anything I've done before so I'm kinda proud, but also realize that I'm not doing it correctly and that it could look better.

Also this is probably personal preference but I always like the side of the bases to be clean, gives a nice border to the miniature as a whole. solid black band around the edge will make the snow pop.

I'm doing a bit of a terrain binge, going to snow flock these tomorrow, will post pics. They look pretty bare now, but the bases will be snow covered, as well as all the upper surfaces.

Yeah, me too. It's only very hard not to hit the borders with at least some glue and then when I sprinkle it sticks. But as I said, for me it works.

So I missed the last thread, and this thread says the 12th, but it's still the 11th for me which means I have my own unusual hwg anniversary.

Whilst reorganising some of my old wip picture folders a few days ago I noticed this. This means on the 11th of September 2014 I posted my first miniatures after what had then been 5 years out of miniature wargaming, and they looked like shit in honesty. You were all very supportive though so now I thought I'd get all that I'd painted since then to show you, and myself, just how much I've done in the last 2 years hobby wise. I also finished the 28mm Indians I've been posting here, so it's a good time to post it all together.

I need to decide on 7 of the grunts to be unit leaders for the M&T rules, so if anyone looks at any and thinks they would make better leaders than the others, and of a good unobtrusive way to mark them out as such I'd love to hear it.

I don't think so, but there are a number of black powder skirmish games with a focus on characters, that could re-create the feel:

They're not compatible for the most part because they're all by different authors. Osprey is merely publishing them, has nothing to do with the systems themselves other than giving some people an avenue to put out a much higher quality (visually) book than they could otherwise.

In general they are simply OK, many suffer from lack of external playtesting and revision, for some this is not too bad, for others it's renders the game practically unusable without significant effort in houserules (looking at you on the seven seas).
Basically, there's no consistency in terms of how they work, and if they're good or not, outside of presentation.

If you are looking for buildings, some companies sell of ruined (or complete) mdf houses pretty cheap. (compared to 4grounds for example)

You can build them yourself quite easy too, just get a few sheets of balsa wood or plastic card and cut out the walls in a way you want.

Hedges and bushes can be made from sponges easily, bristles of brooms or brushes can be used for plants too

The detail is pretty damn good, real easy to build kits, good balance of price to quantity and quality.
Both kits were double kits, so 2 in each. Definitely made for wargamers. Would recommend if anyone needs 1/72 BT-7s or BA-6's. I've found those particular vehicles difficult to find in large quantities and for reasonable price so pretty happy with pegasus in that respect.

Just finished the first coat of the green paint, but here's them all assembled (minus 2 BA-6s)

Will post the finished vehicles some time in the next few days

>ramrod through the neck

In modern ECW battle reenactments, the anachronistic command "check your scouring stick" is given prior to opening the pan and giving fire. This follows a few incidents in the early days of ECW reenactment societies, whereby a(t least one) reenactor and an audience member were actually shot in separate incidents by some dozy twonks who neglected to remove their ramrods from the barrel. One of them got it through the knee, I think. After this, musket safety was taken more seriously, and there are very rarely any incidents nowadays.

Alan Larson, the person who played Wellington in last year's Waterloo bicentenary reenactment, was injured by musketfire during a reenactment a few years ago(ACW I think). Some ramrods are wooden poles with a metal head attached, and in this situation the metal head broke off in the barrel. Alan got shot in the neck, severing an artery. Thankfully, there just so happened to be a former army medic in the rank behind him who leapt into action. The medic ripped open Alan's neck and pinched the artery shut by hand. This saved his life, although he now has a rather ugly scar.
>>
>>49299567

Ronin is good for what it is. Barely playtested in some places, though (Weapon balance is .... peculiar, and some warbands are crappy by design).

The combat system is very nice, though. Sadly, the "campaign" rules for a Mordheim-like game are clunky and quite clearly an afterthought. It's a good game, but limited.

That said, can I ask again if someone has Dux Bellorum from Osprey? Danke!

Nasty stuff. There's some memorable descriptions from the era talking about the "whooping" sound of ramrods spinning through the air because some bloke forgot to take it out when he fired. I recall reading about a sergeant who suggested that any man who fired off his would be sent to fetch it back.

I can't recall the name but I'm sure there was a senior British officer, perhaps a colonel, who was killed at Toulouse 1814 when a random flying ramrod pierced his heart.

I started work on my IJN stuff for the Java Sea. Finished the destroyers I had this past Friday, started on a Sendai class cruiser today to keep them company.

Doing Japanese ships is kind of irritating, because Japan was divided up into five naval districts, each centered around a naval arsenal which has it's own particular shade of gray. Figuring out which ship was associated with which arsenal hasn't always been easy, and it means doing the ships I have in batches based on arsenal so that they all look consistent.

This batch were all built under the Yokuska Naval Aresenal, which is a dark blue-gray. I kinda worry that I got the paint a bit too dark for the scale. Anybody else familiar with IJN colors that could comment?
>>
>>49307057
Eh, I just go with a roughly uniform shade of grey for my IJN stuff.
That also makes them nicely uniform on the tabletop.

Speaking of the Java Sea, I'll probably be playing some Naval War against the ruleset's developer this weekend using my ABDA forces.
A report (and hopefully pics) will follow afterwards.

I'll definitely have to give doing that some thought. It'd be a hell of a lot easier. I'll be looking forward to reading a new report! Have they had their kid yet? I really need to break out my RM and MN stuff and play some games so that I can give some kind of meaningful feedback about them, so that he has something to look at when he isn't as busy. Wish for points values, but I guess just have to wing it. Pic related is my Regia Marina backlog of things to repaint and base. RM is a strong favorite of mine, but there's a reason I've been working through all the other stuff I have besides having decent looking ships to do demos with at unspecified future points. Tax return season will probably see it get even worse as I have so much stuff in my Shapeways wishlists that it hurts.

Unfortunately that's factory paint. The Italian stuff is some of the better overall stuff that was put out in the War at Sea line. They actually look pretty good for prepaints in a CMG line. I aim for the same though, but I need to invest in some of that Tamiya masking tape I've heard such good things about. I can do one or two lines looking crisp on a model, but I've got no illusions about doing that many and having them be uniform in size and sharpness.

Victory at Sea is a pretty accessible first naval wargame, and as a bonus, it and the expansion are in the Naval mediafire in the OP.

Both books come with counter sheets you could print in the meantime. Common scales are 1/2400 and 1/3000. Some folks also like 1/6000, 1/1200, and 1/1800. You'd have to check to see what folks around you are playing if you want to kind of keep in with them, but if you anticipate just collecting various forces, just pick a scale that you like and go to town. GHQ and Panzerschiffe both offer pretty broad ranges of WWII models in 1/2400. Alnavco is a distributor that carries models from a bunch of different ranges and scales. Shapeways is also a good option, as many of the designers offer their models in multiple scales.

Most folks go with rectangular bases, apply water effects to them and drag the ships through while still wet to create the wakes, and paint afterwards. How much if any information you add to the bases is entirely up to you and your tastes. Some people don't even base at all.

Download Victory at Sea and futz around with some counters for a bit and sea how it strikes you. If you enjoy it, and can get others into it, check out General Quarters 3, also in the OP. It's got more of a learning curve, but once you get over the hump, it will let you fight many more kinds of actions in a higher level of detail. If you've got more questions, ask away!

Not to jump in, but here's the difference between a GHQ model and a Panzerschiffe model.

SMS Straslund is from GHQ, and the other three are from Panzerschiffe (don't ask why 3/4 ships in the same squadron are from PZ and the other's from GHQ - long story).

You must not be aware that Warmachine is the game where all terrain must be 2D for maximum playability or angry gamers will berate you for wanting a table that looks good but "plays like shit".

I've never had to make terrain so my terrain making muscles are untrained and weak.
>>
>>49311133
Not the guy you're replying to: I haven't played Warmachine in quite a while, mainly for the reasons I haven't done much of any gaming in a good while. If it's come to that, it's pretty sad. I remember when the Warmachine community used to value the hobby aspect, including terrain. I can tell you it would bug the hell out of me if someone tried to tell me that, especially if it was a friendly rather than competitive game.

I've got a 60-piece Khador Warmachine army that hasn't seen a table in almost three years, partially for this exact reason. Nothing but flat boards, and all terrain was felt fabric. Green felt for forests. Grey felt for buildings. Brown felt for generic "rough terrain". Blue felt for water. If you brought "real" terrain you were asked to put it away, because it limited people's ability to put miniatures on it.

It was just a visually miserable experience.

(Other reason I got out was the people. It's a 50/50 mix locally whether you're going to play against a cool person, or a person who takes Page 5 as an excuse to be an asshole. Up to and including people who intentionally "accidentally" break models, and then complain to TOs that you're fielding an unassembled model and should have to forfeit...and that argument WORKS)

>>
>>49311687
Page 5 was a bit of what was supposed to be tongue in cheek braggadocio and posturing. Unfortunately, some people are absolutely tone deaf and took it as a call to win at all costs.
>>
>>49311762
The problem there is nobody ever thinks they themselves are the asshole so they just assume that doesn't apply to them.
>>
>>49311762

The 1e Page 5 was much more...liberal...about that. 2e and onwards they've outright said "don't be a dick"; you're correct. But there's a lot of dick-ish long-term players, and Warmachine has that reputation for a reason.

>>49311693
>dat spoiler

I agree, but I actually understand where the WAAC people are coming from. It's designed as a very competitive game to start with (as in, "not casual"), and when you added in the Page 5 text, I can completely see how it would snowball into "WAAC, sportsmanship be damned."

>>49311804
>Where do you play?

Cincinnati area. Generally, Lexington, Louisville, Indianapolis, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincy. Most of the meta issues I've experienced were in the Kentucky cities, plus Dayton. There's a guy up in Dayton who keeps a scoreboard showing how many newbies he's made quit the game.

(He did it for Infinity too, until he more or less was asked to not come back to Cincy game stores for that reason.)

Anyway, this whole thing is why I like Historicals and stuff that is similar in playstyle (such as BattleTech). I play games to have fun, not to establish dominance. I'll admit I'm somewhat concerned about getting into Bolt Action because it *is* somewhat more competitive than other historicals I've played...but I'm dragging 10 other Cincy BattleTech players into it as well, so I'll at least have a guaranteed playgroup that has a 10-year history of NOT being WAAC assholes.

To add context to what NEA's saying. Look at the Mark 2 version there, and mentally delete points 3, 4, and 5 (the whole right-hand column). Then apply that to a group of people who are self-selected to be win-at-all-costs personalities anyway.

You can likely see how it got out of hand, and necessitated the verbiage in the Mark 2 version.

So I've decided that if I do branch out in land-based historicals, one of the things I'd like to do is a group of WWII era Seabees, either as a standalone or an accompaniment to a Marine force. I've got absolutely no knowledge of what system it would be appropriate to run something like this in (meaning no idea about scale), and no knowledge about what sort of kit Seabees used to carry (meaning no idea where to start for models). anybody have some advice? I tried digging around in the MF, but the only Osprey I could find that was somewhat related was for US Army combat engineers.

What's the deal with the equipment on the Chinese troops in Ronin? Captain and soldier have both medium armour, but the captain has a shield while the soldier doesn't. Should the captain have heavy armour or should the soldiers have shields?

Seems odd that they'd have medium armour stock, when that's what heavy infantry has when they exchange their shield for a weapon. Also seems weird that the captain doesn't have to exchange his shield when taking another weapon, while all the other models do.

Would it make sense to rule soldiers and captain as having light armour stock plus a shield (so medium armour), and taking a second weapon means they're losing the shield?

Actually let me rephrase the question, does anyone have any book suggestions for learning about ancient Greece any time frame is good leading up to roman conquest. I wanna learn about the aetolgical origins , rise of city states the various league wars, colonies, etc
Also Napoleonic wars someone once suggested some soldiers memoirs but i forget the title

>aetiology
Are you sure this is what you are after? Unless you are using it in a way unfamiliar to how I use it you are interested in stories used to describe the origins of the present day situation (for example the Aeneid was an aetiological for a lot of Roman history, Rome had long claimed to be descended from Trojans and the conflict with Dido presages the Punic Wars).

Anyway a book I liked, not aetiological I must add, was Van Wees's Greek Warfare: Myths and Reality. It's a very good book for "Homeric" Greek Warfare.

yeah, I may have misused it, but its part of what im looking for, 2 reasons. 1 its part of the culture and 2 go back far enough theres not enough information so i like learning about foundation myths, some lewd wolf titty sucking you know what i mean

>>49329385
I should have added, I have a very "storyteller" focused mindset (anathema to any historiography) and my autism tells me i need to learn about the beginning first before i can go on to the next event

>Would it make sense to rule soldiers and captain as having light armour stock plus a shield (so medium armour), and taking a second weapon means they're losing the shield?

Yeah I think the soldier is meant to be light armor without a shield or medium with. Also you should be able to strip the armor for -4 points (thus Light or No armor), as I believe you could see regular Ming foot soldiers armorless.

The captain probably should be the same, though I wouldn't mind him having the option to have a unique hoplite fightin' style.

Does anyone know of a database of the colours worn by military orders in the crusades?

I want to paint my Milites Christi in something other than white/red or black/white.

Annoyingly the only other player in my area has painted his in the colours of the order of St Lazarus so that's out.

The even more irritating part is they're using "Oh we want our own miniatures line in 1/1800" as an excuse to hold everything up. While that would be nice, because that's the scale I collect, it shouldn't be any reason to not put out rules that are done. The ACW variant has been done for nearly two years, and they still haven't released it either, and I very much doubt they're trying to find a model maker for that too. In the meantime, they've killed all of the hype, and now they're working on the goodwill of their customers. It's absolutely baffling to me.

>so i like learning about foundation myths, some lewd wolf titty sucking you know what i mean
I do, I was fascinated with Roman reference to foundation myth during my degrees, wrote several essays on it.

I presented a paper on Roman foundation mythology under Augusts at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research

I'm no expert on Greek Aetiology but I'm sure you could find lots on it.

Yes, of course. Just that trading their light armour for no armour shouldn't negate their shields as well.

I live in the north of England at the moment, never really had any problems. As other anons have said, it's just pewter and plastic. So long as you're not being disrespectful, I don't see a problem with wargaming anything, no matter how recent etc.

Really new here. I'm looking for wargames that can be played using counters instead of miniatures (poor, live in a town without any boardgaming shops, and shipping to my country would cost more than the miniature itself). The eras that interest me the most are high medieval, pike and shot, and mid-to-late 18th century. Could you please reccommend me some games? I have never really wargamed and am dying to get into it (really fond of history).
>>
>>49330376
For a start, try Kings of War with army lists from The Hour of Wolves and Shattered Shields site - you can use cards of sufficient size with either the unit names and stats written on it, or you can download/make some paper figures to make it a bit more interesting visually. Then, I can recommend the Warlord systems like Hail Caesar and Pike and Shot as you can play those with paper cutouts easily - which is true for most element based games to be honest, but those are the ones I can recommend.

Also, hex and chit, lot of games in the folders you can download and print for yourself.

There's a set of English civil war paper soldier and terrain pdfs which are really well done, I think they're out of print but I have them

On my phone now but I'll upload later if you're interested, they would work for TYW/80 years war easily enough I think

You can use them for any ruleset which doesn't use individual basing and resize them if you want to use a smaller scale

>systems like Hail Caesar and Pike and Shot as you can play those with paper cutouts easily - which is true for most element based games to be honest, but those are the ones I can recommend.

This is true, I made a bunch of "cards" (pic related) and put them in MTG sleeves, then taped the sleeves together either two horizontally or three vertically to represent the unit's "footprint" to play Hail Caesar on the cheap (the rulebook includes handy guidelines on required base-frontages and estimates of depths for different unit types and sizes, in MM)

This would probably work for just about any rule-system, you might with some creativity even be able to fiddle it into warhammer ancient battles just using casualty-markers instead of removing figures
>>

>Let me know if it doesn't work or didn't compress right
It doesn't work - left click, get link or something, be sure to copy the one with the key added.

Also, can you upload the cards to somewhere? Even tho I have minis for it, they could come in handy.

https://mega.nz/#!QRUj0TqY!n_Evd8hHdsFjH4wAfcMfFkL9e5NBK-eYP6GJ4FRTBvs

this should work, i was trying to be lazy and not make an account

the hail caesar cards are kind of a giant disorganized mess but I might get around to organizing/compressing/uploading them in a day or two

they have really varying artwork and sometimes I customized the stats or created units that werent in the HC lists (giving certain units special rules, for example) which I haven't thoroughly playtested or balanced

They were also only made for Hellenistic Successors armies to recreate the wars of the Diadochoi, so mostly Macedonian units with mercenaries/eastern auxiliaries

Things I should have realised before I started painting my Samurai:

It's not easy. This is directly related to the other points.
There's a lot of colours.
No, more colours than that.
Fuck, even trying to cut down to colours visible from a distance, there's too many colours.
Seriously, when can I get to the ashigaru so I don't have to worry about so many colours.
If I ever do a proper army, I am doing it in 10mm.

I got the Samurai Battles game last christmas, did a quick job (still took about 8 maybe 12 hours) on assembling everything and played a whole bunch of games of it back then, decided since I've nothing better to work on, I might as well properly assemble and paint everything now. And at some point stick everything on something magnetic and use magnetic sheet on some bases so storage and set up isn't as much of a pain in the arse.

Still, better than doing it in 28mm. Got a 'Never Again' thing going with 28mm and mass battle games after my ECW army...

>>

You can paint a tank up to table standards by spraying the base coat, giving it a wash and drybrushing/painting another light coat.

Infantry requires painting more than one or two colours and actually requires you to paint something other than basically flat surfaces.
