I used to have a massive HQ range of characters for my 5th ed codex Necrons: 27 crypteks, 10 lords and an Overlord.

Then suddenly 7th codex comes out, nukes the HQ section to remove most of the options and make most of what's left shit. Pretty much just Orikan and D-Lords are any good other than taking a bare bones Cryptek as a minimalist tax.

Killed my enthusiasm for playing the army, honestly. And after I found out I basically couldn't lose because everything else's durability was buffed into the stratosphere even without the idiot superformation, I just gave up on the faction.
>>
>>49292228

Not much for now for any of them (Fireblade, Ethereal, Commander) yet. I've some ideas for the Sept, but not for important individuals. I think I will search for some non-stereotypical Soviet/Chinese commissar for the Ethereal. Commander would be a Soviet general or Chinese warlord, and I have no idea about the Cadre Fireblade yet.

>>
>>49292319
3rd ed codexes were very basic and lacking in options for a number of armies. The chaos book was essentially marines -1 similar to chaos is now. Weapon and unit selection was diabolical and most things were over costed while underperforming. Unique chaos units were limited to the cult troops and obliterators. Even compared to the bland lacklustre armies of the time chaos was considered very weak. The 3.5 book was rushed out afterwards to fix multiple issues along with new assault rules.

3.5 had flavor. Rules for all of the traitor legions.
I know this comes up time and time again, but I still don't know why they can do it for loyalists but making a sort of "chapter tactics" for CSMs is beyond them.

Hell, they wouldn't have to really be legion-specific. General dedications or something beyond the marks that get the idea across.

Powers out. Were supposed to try out kill team an hour after sunset. Might as well Bolt myself. How much "better" have CSMs been treated in this format? SEEMS LIKE Fearless is kind of a big deal for break tests. I was supposed to bring AM myself.

It is annoying that there are space marines in cool ranch and spicy nacho.

Honestly if you want to play marines with nit noid specialties and USR's sprinkled all over them, 30k is the better alternative.

Both ends of games workshop don't need whole studios dedicated to giving marines special snowflake ammunition, rules and units.

I'd rather see more exploration of eldar craft worlds, tyranid hive fleets, Tau auxiliaries, IG regiments, and ork WAAUGGHHS than CSM getting more fleshed out. The setting doesn't need it, and the game is always going to have broken bullshit. If CSM aren't it, sorry I guess?

Convert some hades autocannon rapiers, get some vindicators and obliterators, and some skull cannons and get shooting.

>>
>>49292618
Forgeworld still has that chapter approved feel to me where it's more about the hobby. Their campaigns just play in the setting and I think they're pretty well written. The intro to the first Tau book was rad; some imperial bureaucrat discovered a tax irregularity in the once in a couple hundred years audit, discovered folks were fraudulently trafficking goods with aliens, sent in some marines, and the whole thing escalated from there. Arbites and planetary militia get involved, there's maps, it's awesome! They do good work over at FW, I wish GW followed suit.

The lack of good artwork, the pictures of the studio minis for the unit entries...a lot of the GW releases in the past couple years have been pretty aesthetically dead. I miss the moody black and white codices with a brief hobby section and a bunch of artwork and fluff for inspiration.

I will say the time lines they put out are cool. There a ton of cool little one or two sentence mini stories that would great jumping off points and have good examples of how to play with setting.

FW is where all the enthusiasts that worked for GW went (those who didnt give GW the middle finger, that is)

FW is the last bastion for warhammer

In fact I suspect FW paints the models badly and does poor showcases for a reason, because GW doesnt let them. Because a lot of people would migrate from GW to FW

If Forge World starts showcasing the entirety of their armies, painting models like the Eavy Metal team, fixing their website so it looks better, etc.. There would be a massive migration from GW, because FW provides what 40k fans like and always liked.

That or there would be massive complains towards GW

I'd like to see the obliterator virus and cults spread. It would help give CSM forces flavor that deviates more from their loyalist counterparts. For examples:

Create unique daemon-fueled weapons for Obliterators to form. They've already started giving CSM ectoplasma stuff. Go more in that direction. Bring back the Kai Gun and other more varied daemon weapons.

Allow vehicles access to these daemon-weapons and/or an obliterator-like upgrade. Could require daemonic possession first.

Add an option to possessed allowing them to take a lesser form of the virus to represent those early in their transformation. Maybe it replaces their mutation chart for another.

Add and option for Daemon Princes where they may purchase the obliterator virus, allowing them to form ranged weapons in the same or similar way to obliterators. Could also grant 2+ armour save. Make it so that it cannot be combined with wings.

Should I nab the Eldar Start Collecting or look at that box deal with the Harlequins in it?
>>
>>49294431

Easiest way to give CSM flavor is to update weapon options for tanks.

You have 10k year old heretics who still use standard Phobos pattern land raiders and other STCs? no hades autocannon sponsons? no ectoplasma cannon sponsons? no Baleflamer turret preds? Defiler still has all the same options as it had in 3rd (half are template or blast that can't be fired if you shot your main gun since they change how ordinance works) Hellbrutes have to follow loyalist Ferrum Dread pattern and have 1 gun minimum instead of saying it has two fists, here are some options, go nuts. They made up all these new things for 6th then left all the old stuff alone.

(Yes I know this is because they don't have gun models for them but it's one fucking upgrade sprue they could sell for 20$ it could have 7 guns and some sponson bits)

No variant Legion Astrates rule to show they are space marines but lack the same reasons for fighting? Let them always rally at full leadership and act normally when they rally. They can still be run down, break, and have to make the test to rally but they act like space marines.

You have 10 millennia for divergent evolution of tech and they just take the latest Space Marine codex and just strip all the rules add in daemon engines and call it a day.
>>
>>49294768

Depends on what you have and what you want to play.

Are you new? Do you want to play Harliquins?
What kind of Eldar do you want to play?

All the start collecting boxes are good deals. You just need to look at whether they have the units you want to run.

It's just how the Guard Army works. The platoon itself is the troops choice, and what you do is you customize it with 2-5 infantry, 1 PCS, 0-5 Heavy Weapons Squads, 0-1 conscript squad, and 0-1 special weapons squads.

Your a horde army, so you get in a single troops choice more models than most regular armies put together. That said, it is typical to run with the minimum infantry squads, no special weapons squads, the PCS, and then your choice of Heavy Weapons Squads and maybe a conscript squad. The conscripts are for bubble wrapping and tar-pitting melee units (they need a commissar or priest, though) and the heavy weapons teams form the backbone of your firepower. Infantry squads are ok but not very specialized, while special weapons squads are overshadowed by Veteran Squads and thus generally ignored. As for the Platoon Command Squads, you want more of those when possible as they can double the infantry's ROF and allow your heavy weapons troopers to move and shoot on the same turn.

I just read through the 4 page AoS rules and the General's Handbook. I realize that this is as skub as hell, but I think they could import a few of the AoS rules to 40k and address a lot of the problems with 7th edition.

1. Formations cost points. A fucking obvious fix.

2. Summoned units cost points. Instead of free units, you get to do some mid-game list building/ deepstrike.

3. No more initiative stats. I'm biased though. I play Orks.

4. Monstrous creatures get weaker and slower as they take wounds.

I also prefer the start of game alternating deployment method.

What core rule changes would you like to see in 8th edition?
>>
>>49295666
No more of this everything's a monsterous creature bullshit. If it's got a pilot its a walker. If it's a beast or a possessed machine its a MC. I don't care how "advanced" a side's tech is: If it's got servos you can jam them, if its got a crew you can give them whiplash, and if its got ammo it can be cooked off.

My local game store is having a 1500pt tournament for new players with the following rules:

"We will only be using 1 CAD for this tournament, no formations.
A LoW choice is allowed so long as it does not violate any of the following:
It has a larger than 5″ blast D Weapon.
It has a Hellstorm Template weapon with Torrent.
It has a larger than 5″ blast weapon that ignores cover.
Not a Super Heavy Flyer or Flying Gargantuan Creature or Gargantuan Creature.
It has a “Titan” stat line. We mean by this LoW that have a stat line similar to or better than any of the Titan class Super Heavy Vehicles (Warhound, Revenant, etc.), Titan class Gargantuan Creatures (Hierophant), or Daemon Lords.
No Super Heavy/Gargantuan LoW allowed for this event."

I'm coming back from 5th ed and I'm struggling to fit everything I want into 1500 points. My models of note are:

He's a 1 wound model. If you destroyed his legs with something that something probably killed him. Same applies for most results of a vehicle damage chart if applied to an infantryman. But your multiwound models are allowed to move freely without regard of rather important things like severed electronics, detonating ammo storage, or immobilization. Also, for all your defenses against being properly branded as walkers, I doubt your happy about poisoned weapons hurting your crew through a sealed crises suit.

Only in the Word Bearers were Chaplains religious positions. Originally, when they were the Imperial Heralds, Chaplains were those who told a world to come under compliance, or suffer the wrath of the Emperor.

After/during the Hersy, most chaplains in traitor legions were killed or simply stopped being chaplains if they remained loyal to the Warmaster, as the position of Chaplain was one where they decladed themselves loyal to the Emperor and acted as councilors, fonts of wisdom, and an inspiring presence.

The Iron Warriors, Blood Angels, and Space Wolves refused to accept the Chaplains the Word Bearers sent after the Edict of Nikaea, as the Chaplains sent were both to work as councilors for the brothers trained as Psykers, and to instill the traitoris Warrior Lodges.

The Iron Warriors refused, as they had their own secret club where all the Warsmiths and Grand Company leaders went and played Great Crusade and 30k, and so told the Word Bearer to leave, or else.

The Blood Angels refused as they had Sanguinary Priests already.

The Space Wolves refused because they too, had their own shamans.

After/durinf the heresy, only the Word Bearers of all the traitor legions kept their Chaplains, as they were of a legitimate spiritual importance to them, and held positions of respect and power among the Word Bearers, where they became known as Dark Apostles during this time and even in the 41st millenium.

Fun fact: Chaplain's armor has always been black with a Skull helm. Ever since the Word Bearers were the Imperial Heralds, and even during the Heresy did they remain that way.

A shame BaC doesn't give the Dark Apostle a skull helmet though.

Tau battlesuits are connected directly to their spine/brain. In older fluff, there was something like "Battlesuit Psychosis" (I don't remember the term), where battlesuit users end up experiencing hallucinations and withdraw, to the point that they believe that they are still inside a battlesuit. You can imagine a Tau jumping off the hospital attempting to engage his rocket engines.

>>49295933

An XV8 Crisis Battlesuit pilot sits in a foetal position within the central torso section of the Battlesuit, and pilots the Battlesuit through a neural link that connects the Fire Warrior’s brain to the Battlesuit's control interface through a monofilament needle inserted through the back of the head. This disrupts the nervous system of the pilot and temporarily disconnects the body from the pilot's brain from the neck down. The Battlesuit control system then interprets movement signals from the pilot’s brain as the movements of the Battlesuit’s body, effectively making the Battlesuit the pilot’s new ‘body’.

In theory, damage to the Battlesuit unit, whether it be through the lopping off of limbs, the firing of bullets into the chassis, electrocution, burning, or the "beheading" of the primary optic sensor, will not cause pain or discomfort to the pilot inside. However, veteran Battlesuit pilots have been known to develop ho’or-ata-t’chel, which are sympathetic ghost pains and phantom reactions to external damage. This condition is also known as Battlesuit Neurosis, and can cause serious problems in the lives of Battlesuit pilots outside their Battlesuit. Fire Warriors have been known to be so traumatised at losing their Battlesuit's sensor cluster "head" that they have spent months in a psychosomatic coma. Some Battlesuit veterans at the end of their careers may also develop quirks such as trying to fly without their Battlesuit, or not being able to understand why they walk or move properly in normal life when their Battlesuit was damaged.

Their officers use Daemon weapons yes, though the librarian and chaplains keep a vigil on them ready to end them if they are posessed.

They ended up excommunicated and going into the EoT, there's argument whether it was fleeing or simply going after the source of Daemon weapons and a daemons/traitors to used them on.

I don't think so. It's mostly just marines, chaos marines, orks, maybe eldar and recently 'nids - so, the big four "main" factions and 'nids. Tau haven't been in a video game in a while now. I think the most recent official thing was just the battlesuit commander DLC in the survival mode of DoW2: Retribution.

If you're running CSM DPs then wings, armour and the burning brand of skalathrax turns you into a more expensive and less potent but more versatile Heldrake. Generally slap on the Black Mace on one and slam into CC.

I love my lootasI, I love my min mob of MANz in a trukk, and I anticipate loving the wazbom blastajet I'm working on painting. I wish I loved my Stompa more though.
>>
>>49298159
>>49298162
And that's where you are both wrong, I didn't say I was playing Tau, I said I was painting their mini, not the same thing. My favorite faction is Necron but I find Tau mini more fun to paint, although I must concede Tau in the lore are fucking annoying, with their "muh superior technology" and their "muh experienced soldier"
Any questions ?
>>
>>49298171
Take units XYZ, get special rules for them. If you are playing competitively they are very important but in a self-limiting meta CADs will do fine.
>>
>>49298250
>any questions?
Why do I keep coming back to these awful threads?
>>
>>49298171
a formation is a list of units you need to have in your army to get buff/bonus
this being one of the most Broken ones
>>
>>49298171
A 'bound' army must be made out of formations/detachments, these require a minimum number of units.
The standard detachment is the 'combined arms detachment', it requires you to take one HQ and two troops and gives you extra slots for fast attack and heavy support and all that. As a reward for using that detachment/formations all units taken as part of it again a reward/extra special rules to benefit them.

Formations are just non-standard stuff like, "take 1-3 deff dreads". Sometimes they ask for specific units or just give you 'slots' like 0-3 fast attack.

What would be a good wh40k thread then ?

Do Lamenters count, or does their inclusion in Codex Blood Angels mean that they count as having their own rules/models by way of BA? I prefer to ignore the fluff that says they got their BA Curse back anyway. That was dumb.

>No assumptions on whether someone fields cheese units in a faction that holds cheese units

On that note, are Knight Titans and other Superheavies really all that common? Is there any way to deal with them that doesn't involve having my own giant action figure?
>>
>>49292731
Forgeworld actually intentionally paints to a tabletop level because they don't want to intimidate painters. They have cool displays on much of their products that show a wide range of different painting skills, so you know how to build your way up to a good centerpiece. Then if you want to cross the bridge and become a master painter, they offer all of the resources needed to go well above what GW tells you.

Meltaguns and d-guns.

Chapter Master Lias Issodon is guaranteed #3 on the Strategic Table, Master of Ambushes. You can then use him to infiltrate 41 dudes in power armour. Which is HIM. Whatever squad you attach him to so they benefit from his infiltrate. And three other squads of your choice.

Remember that characters confer infiltrate to their squad, but squads don't confer infiltrate to characters. So if you have extra IC's, it's better to give infiltrate to the IC's to further increase your number of models.

Also remember that Infiltrate ALSO grants you OUTFLANK. So if you go up against a heavy gunline, you can just decide after your opponent deploys to go for outflanking and just bypass his gunline entirely. I did this to great effect when I went up against a Renegades and Heretics army that brought a shitload of Heavy Mortar teams, and I outflanked directly into his minimum range so he couldn't target me.
>>
>>49298425
Knights. Wraithknigths and Stormsurge are, the rest aren't (in my experience anyway). Knights are pretty susceptible to melta, haywire and everything else that kills vehicles, Stormsurges and Wraithknights will die to grav and D but otherwise require far more high strength low AP firepower than their points cost.
>>
>>49298524
>Remember that characters confer infiltrate to their squad, but squads don't confer infiltrate to characters. So if you have extra IC's, it's better to give infiltrate to the IC's to further increase your number of models.

Didn't the FAQ change that?

I am looking to try and get into 40k, and have had experiences in online games that have resulted in me putting my foot in my mouth and getting ostracized.

It was clarified in the FAQ. Again, a Character with Infiltrate can be attached to a squad, and the squad benefits from it, since infiltrate is one of the (MANY) rules that apply if only a single model has it.

However, an IC WITHOUT infiltrate cannot join a squad that does have infiltrate. Hence the strange situation of a squad doesn't give a character infiltrate, but a character grants a squad infiltrate.
>>
>>49298591
I dunno. Only advice I can give you is don't try to WAAC.

Win At All Costs, that is. Very unsportsmanlike, not fun for either of you.

No shitposting is possible because shitposting thrives on people replying to it and eating up bait. If people here want the general to be good, they must all do their part. Make it a part of the OP maybe.

it depends on the LGS

Look up the local shops, see if they have wargaming nights, then go and check them out.
>>
>>49298619
For example in WoW, the moment I hop on vent (I avoid it like the plague for this reason) people find out my gender and everyone treats me differently.

Or, when explaining about how I make slutty avatars because I don't act that way IRL and it's fun I immediately get branded as that. It's like I shouldn't talk lol
>>
>>49298591
Just play herohammer, and stop giving a fuck. Play 40k to enjoy the hobby, have fun, and socialize. Make some friends, hang out with them, and create awesome stories through this game. You'll fit right in as long as you're not some edgy retard. Of course you'll get treated different at first if you're a woman, but that's just the way nerds work.

Nerds automatically assume that all females are not nerds. You have to prove otherwise by fitting in with our little insular cultures before you can be considered one of us.
>>
>>49298652
Meh, that's just regular online autistic sperging. At an FLGS, unless it's filled with neckbeards, fedoras, and all sorts of autists, which is highly unlikely despite all the memes, people are going to have to socialize and learn how not to sperg. Which is a good thing.

What army are you interested in?

Emperor's children, but I don't know about Chaos Marines. I like space marines, can you do loyalist splinter factions?
>>
>>49298591
Just don't whine about the dice when you're losing. The occasional 'my dice hate me today' or similar when you make a particularly poor roll is fine, and everyone does that. But at least in my experience, there's a good proportion of players who will not shut up every single time they make a slightly below average roll, and as the game goes on it really drags the fun out of things to hear a paragraph about how bad their luck has been this game every other dice roll.
>>
>>49298674
Pretty much this. I honestly wouldn't care. I mean of course I'd raise an eyebrow at a girl playing 40k but that's normal because it's a guy-dominated hobby. The only experience I have with girls in my LGS is the odd girlfriend of some M:tG 16 year old who has his rich parents buy him 200 euros worth of booster packs every week. I would unfortunately also assume there might be something... quirky about you. Maybe you jerk it to horses, or you have daddy issues because again, that's what I've seen before.

I still wouldn't treat you differently though, you're just another player. As long as you don't play WAAC and actually can keep up a conversation like a regular well-adjusted human being, I'd play and befriend you easily. Your having a vagina should never matter considering we play make-believe war with plastic mandudes.
>>
>>49298719
Yeah, but you're going to have to say they're from indeterminate stock or descended from another Legion/Chapter, and that it's a secret they're loyalist ECs. Maybe only the Chapter Masters know or something.

Remember to make a good backstory for your dudes.
>>
>>49298719
You can and unfortunately many CSM players do. I don't but I'm anal about it.

It would be a bit hard doing something Slaaneshy with loyalists though. It's not like Khorne or Tzeentch where CC and Magic can be technically done by anyone, nor Nurgle who is focused on toughness. Slaanesh is very much defined by shit like Noise weaponry.
>>
>>49298747
I just like the Fulgrim book, and love their colors.
>>
>>49298719
>Emperor's Children
Oh boy. Chaos Space Marines have been in a bad position for a long time now, but you could definitely come up with your own loyalist chapter that has ties to loyalist EC from the Horus Heresy.

I'd just flat out say to use the 30k Emperor's Children rules, or just the regular Space Marine book.

Sorry if this post is in anyway confusing though.
>>
>>49298701
If you want to play for fun, Eldar is absolutely not the way to go. They are an ultra-high power level army that is literally impossible to play at anything other than a competitive level even with the weakest of lists, and that's assuming you bash your head against a wall to drop your IQ by about 50 points. Even then you will table people without even trying, until people start refusing to play against you.

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is Tyranids. You will quickly find out that they're an NPC faction that's not fun to play. Every game you play will end if you getting tabled. By everyone. Unless you play the most unfun lists possible, at which point it's not fun to play against and people will stop wanting to play against you.

The difference though should be what you want to play. If you're a competitive gamer, then tyranids are not for you, and eldar are absolutely what you would want to play. However if you play casual, then tyranids are an 'okay' choice.
>>
>>49298757
Then I'd say go for regular ECs, and have fun with it, don't worry about winning.
>>
>>49298652
Nah it shouldn't be too bad. While women are by no means the majority in this hobby they are present. The owner of my local GW is a woman and it's just business as usual. She converted up some bitchin CSM with lizardmen heads too.
>>
>>49298769
Slaanesh CSM isn't actually as bad as some other types. Ignores Cover is quite lovely, just that Salvo neuters it a bit. Definitely better than berzerkers or Rubrics though (I know what I'm talking about, I play rubrics. heaven help me my 2 basic squads and mandatory Sorc HQ is like 600 points base).
>>
>>49298777
Do the 40k EC guys look like the horus heresy version? Deep purple and gold is what I liked.
>>
>>49298814
No, 40k EC are bright fleshy pink and black, but nothing's stopping you from playing a Slaaneshy warband composed of EC fragments. Most of the legions broke up into separate warbands post-heresy.

I'd say if you want the Horus Heresy colors, you should do a Horus Heresy army. Nothing stopping you from playing it in 40k, and it's army list is a lot better than the Chaos Space Marine one.

If you like Emperor's Children and want to run Chaos you could use the Black Legion decurion for a decent base. (Found here::)

just use normal CSM and get Slaanesh banners for FNP which will add some survivability.

If you want to run EC Noise Marines, your gonna have a bad time.

If you're interested in 30k head over to the 30k General. Folks there are really nice and Cruze Fag will be thrilled to have another girl there.

>>49298870

>>
>>49298852
Yeah that's how I run my Thousand Sons as well, to my eternal frustration. Solo CSM are doable, just don't expect to be good against anything but fairly casual play.

I'd honestly get started in the hobby by checking out your local clubs and shops and perhaps making some friends in the scene. I wouldn't recommend starting 40k if your scene is full of sheisters, twats and WAACfags. Take it from me, I have 4 armies and nobody to play with, it's pointless.

I play 40k fairly regularly with a friend who loves chomping numbers and mathammer but ultimately doesn't pay too much attention to objectives. Usually I play around in my backfield and, when he charges on through, I tie him up and go capture his undefended objectives.

Sometimes I feel a little too ridged when it comes to sticking to playing for objectives to win rather than going all out. It may be boring but I like winning (and not just because my lists are OP, I play guard!).

>I like space marines, can you do loyalist splinter factions?
Yes and no. The imperium would never allow a chapter that outright states it's a successor of a traitor legion, but despite that, it happens all the time. In fact, I believe every traitor legion except word bearers has a loyalist descendant.

For the EC it's the red scorpions, who are obessed with purity. They also get fuck loads of love from FW, and their chapter tactics are pretty sweet.
Now, if you want to be a son of fulgrim and have their color scheme, just make a custom chapter that's unknown origin (because they're loyalist EC), paint em pink and use Red scorpions tactics because that's the closest to EC, for obvious reasons. If anyone asks why the imperium allows such obvious EC descendants to exist, just excuse it as an oversight by the Administratum, because galaxy wide bureaucracy.
>>
>>49292275
Ditto. I had converted 5 warriors into one of each Cryptek type for 6th. Seemed so fun and flavourful. Then 7th came and removed all those options. What's the nfucking point? You turned a boring one-sided army with no wargear or guns into a huge awesome army... then removed a lot of the personality you wanted to add in the first place..
>>
>>49299117
No. Precedent is the ruling on the skyhammer annihilation force. Which is a good thing, because otherwise you'd have stuff like Dragio charging out of DS, which the world does not need.
>>
>>49299085

nah 1500 and I mainly derive fun from casting Boon as much as possible and hope I don't get tabled. Mostly I was just happy to be able to play. I did cause the meta to de-escalate to semi competitive because standard lists would table me. Also people who played me would usually just go through their models and pick ones that never got played.

I haven't played much since I had to move back home but I was regarded as borderline insane at my old store since I ran fluffy Thousand Sons for most games and 8 helbrutes for the monthly 1k tournies.

play with more varied missions

maelstrom objectives are great
table quarters are great
linebreaker missions are great
singular point holds are great
getting stuck in a grand melee grinding your forces down in kill points or victory points is great too

Playing any one mission type too often is not great. Grab older books (3e, 4e, 5e), grab campaign books, grab the horus heresy books. They're full of different kinds of scenarios that are perfectly applicable in modern 40k.
