I haven't played with my "competitive" playgroup in a while because of work.
It is less of a playgroup as it is more I go to my LGS and play in the free commander tournament since it is a ten minute walk.

The Nin deck is also something I just made, no idea what the full potential is.

Anyone have suggestions for my Queen Marchesa? It leans a bit towards etb goodstuff because I threw in a few of my favourite cards. It could stand to be more focused maybe on stax/pillowfort or even simple mardu beats. PS I've lost my copies of Anguished and Crackling Doom somewhere

Yeah, he's pretty great. Criminally underrated as a monoblack commander, but I kind of like it that way. It also helps that I was really getting into Magic around the time Torment came out. My first deck was a Pestilence deck, and I soon moved onto MBC for Odyssey Block Constructed. Been loving Chainer and Cabal Coffers ever since. /blog

Also, I prefer Gary, but I run a lot of enchantments to support the devotion subtheme.

IMO it's the weakest of the sac outlets, but there have been games where I was running out of gas and being able to turn extraneous land drops into cards was the difference between winning and losing. The art is pretty great, too.

In other news I finally cut Army of the Damned from my list. I included it as an alternate win condition that didn't rely on graveyards or absurd amounts of mana, but here lately I've never been happy to see it.

Yeah. I've never seen tymaret hit the field apart from me, and I remember him being spoiled and being incredibly excited to try a weird experimental deck revolving around continually restarting the game over and over, sending him to the yard each time he dies.

It won't be competitive, but it'll be fun to try out!
>>
>>49289521
Does Withering Boon count, even though that cat's out of the bag at this point?

>>49289533
Good point. I replaced Spine with Scour from Existence when BfZ dropped, because hot damn is instant speed Vindicate amazing when the mana cost is inconsequential.

The +3 black devotion is a nice side effect, too.

I run Scour, Oblivion Stone, Nevinyrral's Disk, and All is Dust to help deal with enchantments and artifacts, though being able to reanimate Acidic Slime or Reclamation Sage to deal with them is delicious.

So much fuck Rest in Peace, though. I can mostly play around it but when it's dropped and I'm in the middle of setting up my finisher it's pretty unfun. That and Winter Orb are very difficult for my deck to counter.

I run both. Scour and Spine. Though I need more sac outlets, and Sadistic Hypnotist is climbing in price too, when I got him he was only at 50 cents.

And I actually run Withering Boon in my ultra janky Orzhov fat Teysa Voltron deck. The only time I played that card, it saved my life and won me the game.

My friend was about to counter my wincon with a creature to stop it, then he tried to copy my Withering Boon with Reverberate, but then I pointed it out that its only a "counter creature spell". Sweet Victory.

what

I played him before I added in Mind Slash and it was a tough cut. Pinpoint discard is just better in my combo/control meta. Being reanimatable is definitely a plus, though.

What are your thoughts on Sadistic Sacrament as a preemptive combo hoser?

The more I see of Kaladesh vehicles, the more I think thicc Depala will have enough to be at least casually playable. Each one has higher power than cmc, and most have a strong effect, or an alternate use. I hope they devote as many rare slots to dwarves too. Only worth playing for the OG status.
Ask your friends if they want to play some EDH, and when they pull out narset/derevi/oloro (anybody that isn't an original elder dragon) make a sneering, disgusted face. Remind them you offered to play ELDER DRAGON HIGHLANDER

but yeah, build a solid Esper deck that doesn't necessarily need chromium, and when you're so far in the lead it doesn't really matter, go ahead and cast him to beat your opponents to death with for shits n giggles
>>
Why do combofags get so angry when they get teamed up on?
>opponent playing strong deck that will win easily if left unchecked
>I can't handle it alone so I team up with some other decks to keep the combo player off killing us all and ending the game
Do they want people to just roll over for them? And then they get mad when people don't want to ally with them. Yeah, sorry, I don't want to make an ally who will kill everyone, myself included at once. That's the cost of playing combo. You can't engage in politics.

I really wouldn't bother. The OG Elder dragons cost too much mana outside of hard ramp decks, and rampage 2 doesn't bring anything to the table, especially in Esper.

I run pic related. Even in a heavy ramp deck it's hard to get him onto the field, and after a couple removals there's no point in trying outside of super long games.

For other OG Elder Dragons I'd consider Bolas because his hand-killing ability is good if it connects, but there are other commanders i'd rather run in Grixis. The rest simply aren't worth 8 mana plus 3 per turn.

>>
>>49289942

>>
The most fun edh decks to play have a little combo and a lot of interaction, in my opinion

I think you want your deck to be able to disrupt your opponents early on or you're going to hate playing against fast all in combos

But I think you also want to be able to quickly close out the game from a position of advantage or too many games will slip away from you, also it's fun to have big explosive turns

I think it's cause zirilian is one more mana to cast than Kaalia and also 52 bucks cheaper

When you cast Kaalia and she gets removed, the player will generally always just try to ramp into her again and go for the same strategy. When it fails again, it's not worth casting her, as you can just hard cast the beaters by that point. Kaalia also cheats creatures from hand, where zirilian is from deck I believe (only for a turn though)

Zirilian makes the most of firebreathing effects, encourages jank old dragons, and even not worrying about the commander being fucked immediately. Its nice if he survives, but not necessary.

At the end of the day, They are completely different commanders. Sure they both can cheat dragons on the field and have red in the deck, but that's it

>>49289886
I'm the tymaret player! And yeah, me too. Stax is very fun to pilot.
>>
>>49289872

Everybody is trying to win, everybody is trying to make you lose

Combo players just don't want you to give wins to other people out of fear of losing to combo

Whether they are right or your table is right for ganging up on them is something that can only be answered for the specific situation and game in question

I think we can all agree that a weakness of every deck that has synergy with its commander suffers to heavy and repeated removal.
>>
>>49290025

It all comes down to specifics

My friend has a UW control deck with ephara that doesn't have a quick infinite combo win, but the game is essentially over many turns before he actually kills everybody, because once he has a certain amount of cards in hand and mana in play, he can't be beat

Maybe the combo player isn't really the biggest threat to you, sometimes that person playing the attrition deck may already have you nearly beat without having anything too crazy on board

That said, I think the most important thing here is that you can't make allies unless you have something to offer your ally. An all-in combo deck has nothing to offer the team, little removal, few counterspells, no combat damage, so of course their opponents have no reason to ally with them. Even if somebody else was the bigger threat, the combo player is no help as part of the alliance anyway

>>
>>49291093
Five color commanders are boring to me. And I like having the option to exploit artifacts to keep my dragons on the field, where Scion has to play with the graveyard if he wants to do that.

Also I feel like if you're playing dragon tribal and you're not playing mono red you're just doing it wrong. But I do understand his appeal.

My list is near the top, it's getting there. Same idea of mostly using stuff I have lying around. Karakas I got through a decent trade.
Manabases don't have to be expensive, the best mana sources have been printed in supplemental products and there are heaps of duals which see zero play anywhere else
This site has rare ones, but the search engines are your friend http://mtg.trobinson.ca/dualLands.php
>>
>>49291207
Oh, I see, thanks. Looks like the only expensive stuff would be the shock duals and the lorwyn duals but that's it. I use most of the stuff I have lying around in other decks sadly, so every time I want to play something new I have to order everything from scratch.

Reposting from last thread:

>mfw just discovering the power of Sydri
>mfw I have enough of the cards listed on edhrec to bring the price of the deck I want to build down to around 80 bucks

I mean, edhrec pretty much lists most of the combos that go with her. Any secret tech any of you have before I start building this thing?
>>

Caltrops
Staff of Nin
The new Water tower in Kaladesh
Voltaic Construct combos with all your artifacts now, too.
Urza's Armor (nice effect, big ass cost)
Farsight Mask (same thing)
Portcullis
Lethal Vapors
>>
>>49292075
Tunneling geopede
Nettle drone (combo with Ancestral Statue)
Lobber crew (combos kinda with Rakdos)

My favorite fatties when I built the deck were:
The Eldrazi Titans
Maga, Traitor to Mortals
Knollspine Dragon (doubles down on hand dumping)
The red Myojin
Pathrazer of Ulamog

I also made the deck into a game accelerator with all the damage doubling effects, havoc festival, and wound reflection. You're also gonna want card draw and mana fixing - the deck likes playing fatties, but unless you're going eldrazi tribal, fatties tend to like triple-pip colored mana costs.

Disciple of bolas, and any other "draw equal to power" effects are also baller.

>thing works well in 1v1
>thing doesn't work well with 2 other opponents that will stop your bullshit once they see it
Gee who'da thunk

Also you're overextending. Maybe don't blow your load all over one person's face if you can't hit the other people at the same time
>>
>>49293645
You need to start thinking more strategically and stop speeding up the game. EDH games are sometimes fast but have their own pace too compared to other mtg gametypes. If you begin dealing an insane amount of damage asap then unless your opponents are new you WILL be the main target. It's called aggro, right?

The same is true for mill decks. When I play and im in a multiplayer game with Oona I take my time and only mill occasionally or when I get a bit of damage from an opponent. If I'm playing 1v1 though I go full ham.
>>
>>49293747
it's not really overextending as much as "eating every spot removal once i reach full speed"

i don't really know how to make people stop screwing with my stuff besides killing them dead

>>49293806
i don't really know how to play defensively with xenagos. the commander and the deck archetype does bascially nothing if you're not actively smashing shit, and most primers tell you to smash shit immediately. i dont know. i do much better in online play with the same deck, but that might be because i have more time to read card effects and most of the people there dont know how explosive my deck can get

>>
>>49293872
Then you should probably get around to making another deck. Doesn't have to be expensive. But if you play with one deck all the time people easily learn to be able to respond easily to it.
>>
>>49294102
yeah i've been thinking of making one. probably like a polar opposite of xenagos, ie. stax/control that hits everyone, or a lifegainy group slug or something like that. i still like being active and pillow forting disgusts me. i've also liked the deck archetype of getting tons of value from saccing (grave pact, threaten effects, etc)

any budget suggestions? i'm thinking of a 100 dollaridoo budget for it, so it helps if it runs jank that no one else wants and it doesn't matter if it's not super tryhard

Depala is probably only going to be viable in standard constructed with Start Your Engines. There's hardly enough cards to fit with dwarves+vehicles. Ulrich finally got enough werewolves to make werewolf tribal a thing, but even then that took what, 5 sets to fill up and not be janky?

I might try to convince my playgroup to make this an honorary commander

>>49291136
The beauty of EDH is that it's a very casual format and if you don't have the money for a top tier deck, you're still going to be able to have fun. Often when you're playing in a group, the way the format is designed to be played, people focus on taking out the best decks first. You don't need to destroy your wallet to have fun with EDH.

How do you use your Athreos?

I fucking love the Sacrifice/Lifedrain combos. I put out Xathrid, Ayli, Athreos, Blood Traitor and later, Butcher of Malakir, then a 1 CMC Human. Suddenly, I'm sacrificing this human, it's doing 1 damage to each other player, forcing players to Sac a creature, giving me 1 life, and giving me a 2/2 zombie token... all for 1 mana. Then Athreos returns that one human to my hand, unless someone pays 3 life, and I get to repeat that every turn for as long as I have mana.

Not to mention Athreos' artwork is kickass.

I'll post my deck list later for you guys to review.

Martyr's Cause is an all star in the deck and if you use it to save other people every now and then you would be amazed what they would be willing to do for you later. Attrition is also pretty solid.

Athreos is a trap commander. I've been trying to make him work for the same reasons, but 3 life isn't impactful, and anyone will pay it when it matters. More importantly, his ability isn't a *may* ability. He's anti-synergistic with any graveyard combo or even simple things like Bloodghast.
The best way to build him is fleshbag marauder.dec or Shadowborn Apostles. Even then, Ayli or Teysa are always going to be a better option for W/B.

i feel like abusing archetype of endurance is more fitting to a ruric thar deck or something. i might actually rework my xenagos into one at some point if i ever get bored of him

I tend to target Purphoros as well. Having every opponent lose 6 life a turn is kind of anti-fun and anti-politics in my eyes. At least the deck is mono-red, so as long as you keep the commander off the table, the rest of the deck isn't too threatening.
>>49293645
Try more card draw effects, and maybe something like Constant Mists to buy you time to beatdown multiple players. Alternatively, add some tutors to find Hydra Omnivore.

I've been trying to make a deck for each 2 and 3 color combination (pic related). Anyone have any recommended generals/lists? Might convert Brago to Roon and Mazirek to Prossh.

Mill is better in modern and legacy than edh and traumatize is shit for modern and legacy

In a modern mill deck by the time you get to 5 mana, your opponents library is at like 25-35 so you're paying 5 mana to mill like 15 cards, which is garbage
>>
>>49298186
Not a bad start, though I think some more card advantage would help out so you don't run out of gas or get blown out by a wrath.
Some suggestions: Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Omens, Soul of the Harvest, Phyrexian Arena, Underworld Connections, Night's Whipser, Sign in Blood, Ancient Craving, and/or Ambition's Cost.
Since you already have some defenders: Overgrown Battlement, Sylvan Caryatid, and Axebane Guardian provide decent ramp and synergy.
Honestly, I'd cut out the upkeep subtheme. All you're getting for that are vanilla beaters, and Doran already does a better job at making those.

The answer's gonna sound way wackier than it is. Brisela's a single creature on the back of two other creatures. When you have both of these creatures on the board, you turn them over onto their back sides and line them up so they're one creature.

And yes, activated abilities can be activated anytime an instant can unless it says otherwise.

I wasn't sure about going full-lifegain with Ayli but it seems like that might be the best thing to do, actually. Or what's the best thing to do with Ayli? Most spikes seem to love doing combos and dumb sac shit with her but I find tutoring for combos boring as fuck. I've been testing some of those decks out on xmage and they just feel lackluster. I'm gonna test out that cleric deck soon

What's the difference between Ayli and Teysa, Orzhov Scion? I'm guessing Ayli is more about life gain and Teysa is more about stax?

>>
>>49300679
No, you can't use Planeswalkers as commanders unless its stated in the card, or your playgroup is ok with it. EDH is usually pretty flexible.

original Teysa is really good. run a bunch of tokens and sac outlets and combo off.

I have a Daxos deck too and while not very competitive I still like it quite a bit. run a bunch of wraths and enchantments to protect yourself (No Mercy, Blind Obedience, Karmic Justice) and token generators to slowly take over the game (Bitterblossom, Daxos himself, Sigil of the Empty Throne, Ajani's Chosen). I also run Eldrazi Conscription because why not.
>>
>>49300679
Is it you, Chandere?

Ayli is a good start if you aren't sure what you're doing. She's a tiny toolkit in and of herself, and a low-cost commander is just straight up more enjoyable to play.

>>49300756
An adventure mapping out zendikar's ruins sounds about as much fun. No Roil before, no Roil again, finding shattered remnants of previously unexplored places as well as recently ravaged stuff we saw in good shape in original zendikar would be cool.
>>
>>49300679
for just pure Orzhov the best is probably Teysa, Orzhov Scion which builds into a token deck with a combo end game. But the 2015 precon probably has all the most interesting ones as Karlov and Daxos build into decks with unique playstyles. Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim is also a spin on the life gain deck though it goes "tall" with its lifegain by gaining lots of life at once whereas Karlov prefers to go "wide' with lots of individual triggers, no matter how little you actually gain, and the general playstyles are also different with a tuned Ayli probably having a combo wincon involving clerics and infinite life, versus Karlov who tends to play an aggressive Voltron deck which is probably a little weaker but in my opjnion he's more fun to build around due to the nature of requiring a lot of life gain where Ayli doesn't require as much, just that you gain a lot at once which you can get with fewer individual cards than Karlov being thirsty for triggers, especially since she's also a life gain engine herself.
>>
>>49300756
Cosnidering the Eldrazi are both directly and indirectly responsible for most of the ancient ruins and artifacts that define Zendikar I don't think there's a lot of what makes it Zendikar lies in the time before the Eldrazi.

>Ayli is a good start if you aren't sure what you're doing. She's a tiny toolkit in and of herself, and a low-cost commander is just straight up more enjoyable to play.

this is just my opinion but i think yeah, ayli is way easier to utilize but her overall impact is fairly low later on. like, let's look at her overall value

body: 2/3 for 2 mana, decent, but turns very good with deathtouch

ability 1: 1 mana to sac something and gain its toughness as health. decent for putting stuff in the graveyard, and this guarantees you will just about always have a sac outlet. but what you gain from the sac outlet is actually very miniscule in EDH since life is generally a worthless resource as long as it's above 0 with very few exceptions

ability 2: sac something and exile a nonland permanent. seems very good on paper, but then you realize how conditional it is

>you need something to sac
>you need 50 life or more
>you need 1 colorless, 1 white and 1 black mana

and now it's suddenly just a normal recurrable vindicate that costs a creature to sac. it's not bad, but it's not worth building around. it won't even be available when you're getting run down by damage

imo, ayli seems like she works best as a good early defender and guaranteed sac outlet. everything else about her is just bonus and shouldn't really be built around. she is fairly nice in the respect that she's cheap, she'll always be around and no one will bother trying to remove her like many other orzhov commanders. but she does feel a bit "casual" since she doesn't really enable crazy interactions like teysa or whoever

I only have one room in my mono-black deck for one more Sac Outlet.

Sadistic Hypnotist or Carrion Feeder?
>>
>>49301616

I test my decks against each other on tappedout

Used to do some cockatrice but my internet has gotten so bad that I prefer tappedout because if my internet goes out I don't disconnect I can keep playing

I would use XMage but I'm retarded and find the interface really difficult to manage

so I use Untap.in

Pretty good drop on round 4
>>
>>49301871

Honestly they are so different

Sadistic hypnotist is extremely powerful but if you don't have viscera seer or too many other 1-2 drop sac outlets, you may need another low cmc sac outlet

Hypnotist is the better card in edh

Huh

Kinda cool
>>
>>49301919

Better with lotus bloom

Black lotus every turn don't mind if I do

That's gross, I never even thought about that.

>GW

I'd say it's safe
>>
>>49301826

Very safe, your curve is fine and your ramp and land counts are fine

One thing to consider in general though is that land count is going to be affected by the amount of card draw and ramp is going to be affected by mana curve, if that makes sense

High land count won't help you if your curve is too topheavy, you're still doing nothing on too many turns

And two decks with the same mana curve could want different land counts depending on how much card draw and deck manipulation they run. A deck with lots of cantrips and explosive card draw wants a low land count because they want to avoid flooding

The exception would be land drop decks like Azusa that want heavy card draw AND high land count
