Yeah, it takes a little more than that to impress me as a player. So many GMs think that important-sounding words and concepts equate to a sense of profundity and wonder.

It's like, it takes no effort for you to say "it's unlike anything anyone's ever seen, no knowledge roll for you", but that doesn't impress me OOC because apparently it's a bog-standard monster that lives 2 hours away from the town my character grew up in, in the open along an allegedly-bustling trade route. Get me on an epic months-long quest into the wilderness, and okay, maybe we could see something like that and I'd accept it as something other than an excuse for you to not look for monster lore.

It's just so obvious when the GM is being lazy, but expects me to lick his boots regardless for taking the most half-assed shit imaginable and couching it in grandiose language.

Not if you do it right. Do what I did. Make your players classless, average stats, proficient in only a couple of skills. I gave them a +1 bonus in ONE stat, to signify that they were slightly above average in that one thing.

Then focus on investigation and worldplay over combat. Allow combat, but it's not going to be easy, especially if they start out unarmed. Here's how a final fight with a witch went.

I'm GMing right now and threw in a Gregorian calendar system because I can't be bothered to invent or track a new one.

Also, I made excel give me little buttons to press for "+1 day", and then it shows me the new current day in-game. I even know days of the week and month. Did the same thing for tracking hours and minutes of game-time. I like pressing buttons to make time advance as a GM.
