I'm looking at a brick wall right now.
Don't know what to do next.
In my opinion the lord heads (don't have normal ones right now, but I will buy some soonish) are not looking good.

I also attached the second wraithlord I'm experimenting with (no clean up so far, I'm sorry).
The not snake one should hover over the ground, not sure how I will make that work tho.

Problems for both of them: The back pieces, see picture, how to fill the gaps? And the heads. PLZ HALP.

Also thanks for responding earlier.

I'm using these etched brass.

Since those minis were already painted (and they were to plain for my taste), i had to paint this sprue of etched brass separately and then glue the leaf on them.

I'll make all my legionaries with the ivy/leaf motif, and those are unpainted, so it will be easier.
But it's a shame for these ones, it's not how i imagine they would be.
>>
>>49204895
Did you bend and shape the brass on a spare separate pauldron before applying?

It looks like just another version of the sigmarine style helmet. It's not a great deviation, so it could work. If you're ok with Blood Angels Blood drops all over the helmet.

Tonight, with some dedication (and some liquid courage) I'm going to attempt my first armor plate for my Warlord Titan. Something small, just to try to build confidence going forward. A little freehand lava and some reds and metals. But to do this I need to cross that gap of fear I have so I'm gunna try something off the cuff. On my way home from work I'm picking up a few paints, some primers, some painters tape and am going to go all out.

Anyone know of a good Lava crack or ember style tutorial for my titan that doesn't require an airbrush?

Is Astrogranite texture paint from GW a good way of doing concrete and other roads or am I fucked?
>>
>>49208317
you can get textured mediums in different grades of roughness from any art supply store that are probably gonna be a much better deal.
Vallejo does texture pastes too.

That said, no for this particular thing they're not very good imo because you want an even surface.
The best I've seen was somebody mixing sand into mortar, casting a thin plate, then using a brass brush to roughen up the surface a bit and then breaking it and glueing it wherever.
Cheaper alternatives would be cork tiles or something along those lines.
You could also just glue down some fine grade sandpaper or try to glue fine sand down as even as possible if you are working on scenery.
You can also mix sand with your pant.
>>
>>49208302

okay thats fine, in that case i'd probably suggest a flesh tone line across the lower part of the eye, just to make him look like the eyes are squinting a bit (he should be screaming with that pose so they should be really narrow)

I'm working on painting some stormcast eternals, these are the first minis I've ever painted so I can only compare to what I've seen itt and on YouTube. So far I've only really got the basecoat done, which was much more difficult to get a smooth even coat than I was led to believe imo. >>
>>49208578
This is one of the GW plastic bases. The textured look it has is just due to drybrushing.

Anyway, if you want bases like that I'd thoroughly recommend looking at the products that are being made for Infinity and the stuff Anvil Industry sells.
There are a bunch of really good urban bases that are cheaper than the GW ones too.

Seriously though I don't think getting this would be hard.
If you mix water into milliput you get a think paste with a somewhat rougher texture.
You could cut boardwalks like this from foamcore, plastic card or mdf, carve the paving in and then cover it in a thin layer of milliput or something similar to give it a bit of texture.

Unless you want something really specific though I'd say getting resin bases might even be a better deal for your money vs time.

So ill ask again, what did you do for those lovely bases?

>>
>>49208638
It would seem a little artifical, but if you like that armor mark best why not?
You could also try getting your hands on some more mk6 stuff from bits sellers since the mk is not universally loved.
Or go full hog and get some FW mk6 dudes.

Having any number of the variant in your army makes total sense, having them all do something similar might look weird, but in the end you have to know what you like best.

Cadianfag here posting from my phone. Excuse the slightly potato image.

For a while now I've had some rather badly painted tauroxes but no real motivation to do anything with them. When the Hellrain formation rules showed up I figured I might as well see what I could do to make it not shit.

I stripped it, tore off the sno-cat track pods and replaced them with some wheels from Zinge industries, and moved the hot shot volley gun array to the turret so it wouldn't retardedly shoot past the door. This required me to magnetize the turret, but no real challenge compared to getting the wheels to be straight, parallel and even. Green stuff is your friend.

I tried to do the old kasrkin paint scheme to differentiate it from my other vehicles. I'll try something similar with my scions, I think; it came out good.

A side effect of the fact that it's a repaint. The original was spray painted badly, and I wasn't able to get all the old paint off. I didn't want to use anything too strong, so I simply tried to blend it into the new scheme.
>>
>>49208578
Find a terracotta tile, piece of sand stone, anything with the texture you like that is flat (I would suggest a kitchen whetstone for this desu). Get some /miliput. Wet the texture, push the putty into it as even and as flat as you can, the bigger the area the better. Let it dry. Now you have a mild you can use to make the texture, and cut to whatever shape you want, as thin or thick as you want.

Attempting to paint up some tau in Sa Cea sept colors.

I am not a fan of how the cloth and the gun blend in together.

Was thinking or going with a kakie cloth but i like the look of the gray.

I tried black on the darker parts of the gun but it still looks very offputting.

Though about doing it in leadbealcher but tau do not have a lot of flashy metal showing.

What do?
>>
>>49209361
you could alternate the black and blue parts on the gun.
Just keep the black on the grip blue and put the black somewhere else to balance it.
Or paint the fingers of the gloved blue too.
>>
>>49209361just lighten up the dark grey a bit on either the gun or the cloth (the gun would probably look better) and that would give you a different look without much change to the overall look of the scheme.
>>
>>49203815
It isn't difficult, just time consuming and requires a little more care and patience than usual. The chap I was responding to was saying I should do everything on the yellow quarters to completion, then go back and do everything on the red quarters to completion. I opined that that was a bad idea.
>>
>>49209487

Blue fingers would seam like armored bits to me.

I am going for a quick paint job because i plan on using army painter dark tone on these guys to get them done quick. After a dullcoat i can highlight as time permits to make them a little more fancy.

I had thought of putting some brown on the hands and the boots like pic related. But something just seams off about that to me.
>>
>>49209615
Red covers better over yellow than the other way around.
Painting yellow first means you can be as sloppy as you want then go back with your red base and paint a clean checkern. Stay inside the lines while painting the reds and you are good.
If you prime white and use inks and glazes painting the yellow should be fairly trivial.

desu I think you are overthinking this quite a bit.
If you push the highlights on the fingers a shade lighter you'll get the visual distinction you want.

Or as the other anon mentioned, do something like on the standard Tau scheme. They got a mix of sand and terracota, just add a darker shade of blue to the greyblue in the same way and use this where you have a problem with the contrast.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EH9121G/ref=dra_a_cs_mr_hn_xx_P3033_100?tag=dradisplay0bb-21&ascsubtag=42dd41985165ad404bc52ee831b65cc5_S

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aluminium-Flight-450x310x240mm-Internal-Divider/dp/B00BEHASU0/ref=sr_1_18?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1472853775&sr=1-18&keywords=aluminium+case

first one looks like have more space also for tools, dices, paints, etc, but it's made in poor plastic; the other one looks less handy but it is in solid aluminum.
What do?

Just started painting my first miniatures and I'm worried they're not gonna come out great, I can't reproduce the crisp lines I see itt or at my lgs, and in some areas the paint is a bit too thick. Something I noticed far too late.

What do you guys think ? Sorry for image quality all I've got is my phone
>>
>>49211192
Top shop for a first try. You will hate it years from now, but the whole point of the first try is to do it wrong so you don't do it again.

You're within the lines, you're not streaking, and it is a bit thick in places but you're not losing any real detail. Wash it, take the time to clean it up, and keep practicing.
>>
>>49205320
I did the same exact thing with mine and it a purple cape it looks pretty good give me a minute to go dig him out and find them
>>
>>49211273
Where are the places that you see it being thick? I know it's not shown in the pic but I ruined his parchment with paint, seriously just trying to basecoat it. But I want to know what other areas, the shoulder probably? I planned on shading everything and then doing some of the easier edge highlights (ie. Not the frigging lightning bolts). Eshin grey probably goes best with the black I'd wager. Anyway, thanks for the constructive criticism! The painting aspect was keeping me out of the hobby for some time and I was beating myself up over it not looking fantastic (I think the models look great and want to do them justice)
>>
>>49207397
Yeah, it's a cool bit of kit. I don't rate lobbas because I need stuff that's going to get in faces and artillery isn't fast enuff.

I reckon I'll get a couple of Super Skorcha trukks in though for laffs.
>>

Not the same anon, but the pauldrons look a little bit thick. Try the word of our lord and savior and apply multiple thin coats instead of one, thick coat.

Yes, but MkII/MkIII are incompatible with other suits, and MkIV is imcompatible with all other suits. Though, with them being an Iron Hands successor chaoter you could argue that the skill of their Iron-Fathers they could jury-rig them to work with eachother. Though, by 40k suits of MkII-IV would be considered sacred relics of the old times.

So far today I sat down and actually painted my three dead space marines. These guys serve me as objective markers. Later I think I might put squad numbers on the shoulderpads to serve as objective numbers, that way I don't have to stick a dice next to them.

One is face down in a pool of his own blood, another is shot in the torso, and the last is a spooky skellyman.

Only thing left to do is some layering with elysian green on two of them, to get them a bit more shiny. Also.. More in the next post.

The Wolf gray and Bone color primers they make are a fucking godsend.

Did up a 2k point deathwing army over a long weekend with the dip method.

and then over a week i painted up a 1850 space wolf army by priming everything with their wolf grey.

The yellow (demonic maybe?) sucks balls.
Not a fan of their metalic either. Though the quality was good i thought it was too bright.

The darker red is great for khorne stuff or flesh tearers basecoat. the lighter red is eh though.

Have not used their black or white.

But if you are looking for a good white spray paint then i shit you not get the $0.96 a can spray from wal mart (for those of us in the USA)

What are you needing colored primer for?

well i know in a lot of mechanics, instead of using vibration dampeners from the store they attach hocky pucks to the feet of the compressor, then attach that to the concrete. Maybe if you use some of that acoustic foam, a rubber mat, and a bit of plywood like pic related you can get something working
would need to all be tightly fitting and the compressor pretty firmly attached. Sofa foam instead of acoustic foam could also work

You're getting into your own head too much. If you can freehand Eldar Harlequins you can freehand on a giant surface like that.
If you've got an airbrush, use it!
Painter's/masking tape is your friend. You can get it in lots of different sizes.

Don't forget to carefully prep it for painting, anon. Clean sprue chunks and mold lines off of each and every piece, and then wash each and every piece with soap, water, and a toothbrush for some light scrubbing.

Don't forget that if you fuck up an armor panel, you can always go back and strip it and redo it.
Watch some vids of people painting Titans online to get your confidence up. You'll feel better when you've actually got the brush in your hand and you're sitting in front of the mini.

Good luck! Post some pics of it in its' current state if you can.

Sculpting it is a possibility.
Not hard to do, just takes a little patience. If you can do fur you can do fire.
You can also get effects from armorcast for flamethrowers that are premade.

Brückenkopf has an article on this topic. They recommended the spraypaints from toom.
You should be able to get those easy in berlin (i have a toom 15 minutes on foot away).

Need a bit of advice, /wip/. I'm doing a dark metallic colour scheme on some marines, and I've discovered that graphite powder produces the most spectacular effect, a perfectly smooth finish which you can buff up to a shine so good you can see your face in it, it's fucking perfect. Problem is that it's graphite, and it will come off on your fingers when handling. Everything I've tried fixing it with so far has killed the effect and flattened it out substantially, even gloss varnish. I've got an airbrush coming in the post, so I'm going to try spraying some white spirits over it, anyone got any other ideas on how to seal it at least a bit without losing the metallic shine?

Yeah there are a bunch of smaller shops scattered all over the city.
And there are - i think - three GW stores in Berlin too.
Couldn't tell you which ones are big enough to host games.
The Funtainment near Warschauer Straße has a few tables.
There are also gaming clubs. Dice Knights is the only one I know though since the guys at battlefield berlin packed a flyer into one of my orders once.
Brückenkopf has a map and a register for gaming clubs too I think.

I really don't like Agrax Earthshade on White.
Way too dark and dirty.
Makes your Whites look chalky.

Try the Seraphim Sephia wash on instead, it's much lighter but still gives shadow.
Try and run it on the recesses only, the edges of the armor should be highlighted, not shaded.

Try a which or light blue drybrush inside the mortar barrel to give a brighter glowing effect.

blend the earthmarks a bit, stipple with highly watered down browns to soften and 'feather' the edges a bit more, it looks a little too artificial up close. Perhaps, and this is preference only, vary the metal a bit? It seems like large swathes of the left leg are metal/wash/drybrush-- which looks good, dont get me wrong, but it may be a case of too much. A blue wash or some weathering of black/brown stipple should fix that up.
But hey, opinions. Looks really nice otherwise, man. Keep it up!

White drybrush over a light Blue or White that was washed with a Blue wash looks good.

If you look at the bottom 2 pictures the right hand one has a piece that runs the length of the rhino's roof I'm pretty sure that's what he means is missing.

>>

Will it behave exactly the same: nope, theirs is probably formulated specifically for it, not made from regular paint.
Will it serve a similar function: yup, it should work just fine though. But experiment, it may take a while to find the correct consistency/mix.

I got a bunch of Khorne guys but didnt want to paint them the usual. Saw this guys army online where they're all glowing and wanted to try emulate it. Any tips?
I tried it out on a test guy, ignore the base its actually for a different model, just thought it'd look coolerif he was standing on something.
>>
>>49222638
It looks strange because the glow isn't actually coming from anywhere, it seems randomly placed.
I won't comment on the weird gritty texture because I assume it's a spare test model and so it doesn't matter so much.

I'd advise deciding beforehand where you want the glow to emanate from and then look up some tutorial on object source lighting to let you get the effect you want.

For example, the glow could be coming from all the gaps in his armour, or from his flesh, etc.

As it looks now it just doesn't look particularly good or convincing.

looks like you need a bit of cleanup of a few mold-lines. Also can't see for sure but you might want to greenstuff the gap between the arm on the bike and the Lord. As for adding anything the only thing I might suggest is strapping some bolters to the front-end.

Needs some more angles to tell for sure.

Paint it how you want.

>>

under that helbrute plate needs something.

capes and waist join need gap filling. cape needs some more cleanup where the arm normally attaches.

needs a pauldron. csm box has plenty.

might want to clean up that DA symbols.

I'm converting Astorath into a Night Lords praetor/centurion. I'll be giving him one of the previous edition's chaos raptor jump packs (the slightly curved one), and I'll replace the BA iconography with some FW brass, but I'm having trouble on settling on a sword to give him.
I'm thinking he might look good with either a dark eldar or dark elf weapon. His pose more or less requires the weapon to be fairly large, so maybe an incubus glaive?

On a related note, I'd like to flavor-up the rest of the army. Do you think dark elf corsair swords would look alright if held by Night Lords marines?
Also, can anyone suggest good bits for trophies? I'm talking about severed heads and chains and such.

The helmet has like 5 shades of black to grey on it but it doesn't pick up on the camera.

I had some freehand on the cloak but I wasn't keen on it, it looks better with a simple black shade and acts as a frame for the rest of the model.

It's not a vox-caster, it's his bolter's magazine - a font of wisdom!

If you look at the model from the top, you can see the bolts loaded into it.

>but i've no idea how to find/search for one (i don't play 40k). any help/links?

Good luck. I know Noble Knight Games sells them on eBay occasionally, but he charges a lot and his selection, while organized, is almost like a random treasure hunt; it's like shopping in one of those used book stores. I suspect he has (or maybe had) a brick-and-mortar game store and was accepting people's old models in exchange for store credit, then turning around and selling those old models on eBay to chumps like us who will pay big bucks for them.

But you want to search? Be my guest. Here's my eBay query string (I'm partial to Blood Angels):

(oop,"rouge trader","rogue trader",metal, vintage) ("space marines","space marine","blood angels","blood angel","space mariens","blood angles") -chaos -epic -atax -kenner -ccg -maelstrom -cryomek -grendel -void -vasa -dirtside

You can limit your search to s specific country by using the advanced options, so I run one against the United Kingdom and one against the United States. Every once in a while I'll run it against Canada, Germany, or Australia, but some combination of the price, high shipping costs, and poor selection has so far stymied my ability to find anything in those three countries worth buying.

Hey anon i'll try and give you some advice. I'm by no means the best painter.
Good:
>The basecoat seems okay. Doesn't look like this is where you made huge mistakes.
>You tried
>cool idea with the lava
Bad:
Everything is huge and splotchy. Seriously invest in some wee tiny brushes and take your time and get everything nice and small. It looks like you attempted to highlight but the areas which are a lighter green are just huge.

For the most part you know what colors what should be but you aren't really coloring in the lines. Lots of silver where it should be green, your boss nigga has black on his bling.

Now while the lava is a cool idea.... the application is poor. Right now it looks like red circles that someone threw an orange at. Lava isn't circles, it's more like pic. It's coming out of the cracks and its fucking hot and glowing. Not zits with orange puss. I would stick to painting flames on your rank and file dudes and do the lava effect on your HQs.

I can keep going if you want. Don't be upset i'm just trying to give you CC. My old marines make me want to smash them.

>implying variety isn't the spice of life
WIP started as raw "post pics of your shit" threads. If there ain't one up and someone wants to talk shop, I'm sure we'll be able to survive a single thread without a wall of links in the OP.

>painter in video applies two coats and is left with a perfect colour
>I apply 20 coats and still see the black primer beneath

I swear I'm not thinning that much.

Thanks for the advice, anon. Good luck finding a resin Astorath. It looks like there's one for sale on ebay right now for $11, but it's from China so I'm %99 it's a recast, if that matters.

Has there been a single word from her since she started the FW job?
I don't use tumblr or hardly any other social media so I can't follow what she's doing on there.

Yeah I had built a bunch of them back in the day and only finished the rest of the box of 30 a year ago. Not a ton of detail but they were still fun to convert and paint.

Did you use greenstuff for the highlights? Because that shit is thick.
Base coat looks alright but those highlights are so thick they belong in a chubby thread on /b/

It looks fine, very practical color scheme. It'll make them all look like in-human mooks though if there isn't some small way to individualize them. Maybe add something to their guns? Kill markings, shoulder badges? Otherwise pretty solid.
