>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.

Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.

>Examples of games that qualify
Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamorka, necromunda, mordeheim).

Terrain. Objectives. Deployment points. Scenarios, like "stop Abdul Goldberg stealing your bloody ship." Plus, drop a concrete patch and put a ship on it and your western town becomes the other kind of frontier outpost. Same with farms, bars, whatever.

Also works for X-COM.
>>
>>48901037
Works in 28mm too, often with some of the same toys. They just become helo equivalents and small shuttles.

There's this one Star Wars TFA toy that's a perfect 28mm skimmer - two crew seats that fit 28mm seated figures and a gun up front with enough space to fit a standing gunner, or replace it with a proper gun because while the rest of the model is nice prepainted metal, the gun's flimsy plastic. It's like £10 from the Disney site - makes a great little patrol/response skimmer. Even comes with a little clear block to sit on as a flying base.

Is there a good pulp game that Danger 5 would fit into?

The GMG guy has just announced his own game that looks set up for 4-7 models per side (plus zombies).
Having watched the vids, it doesn't grip me exactly, and gives the impression of having a fair bit of book-keeping, and I'm not sure I like the statcards, but I like a bunch of the mechanics (like noise and ammo).
The Aggressor and Defender thing in particular is pretty cool - both players do movement, then both players do shooting, but the player that won initiative picks to move first OR shoot first.

I've honestly heard good things about Kings of War. The worst things I've heard is that it is a bit bland and vanilla, but considering how it's supposed to use any minis and make pretty much any army and is meant to be played on mass scales that's not necessarily such a big negative.

Give it a try, I guess.

I quite like it. Has all the strategy and depth of a rank n' file game without the bullshit that made WHFB battles so fucking tedious near the end of its life.

Totally solid set of rules, and I'm excited for the historical book coming out.

>>48907806
I haven't checked tbe updates out. How did Forsaken get nerfed?

I do jave to say that I like the Shadoe caste way more than Fire, but Ice is where it's at, baby.
>>
>>48909575
>How did Forsaken get nerfed?
some nerfed some buffed, biggest example is Warwind 100pts, lost an ap, lost his gun. They've lost all their "good" lieutenant type options. Kinda saint or bust I feel. Like its 3 ap across the board (kept 4 on saints), and more point blank guns rather than a gun and a sword. They feel too vanilla now, and way less interesting than they were. Especially when compared to the just rereleased Kukulkani.
>>
>>48910846
(cont) I think they're trying to streamline especially points costs, everythings in 25 point increments now. And I would assume that the other factions will fall into line at some point, but I definitely feel the jump from Goon to saint is too big in forsaken. But hey I guess I get to use haniels with mary now.
(also medic is now 1 wound and free vp IMHO)
>>
>>48904835
Haven't played it, but got the rules. There are a couple of things I don't like, but I'll try to play a game to see how it is in action, but generally I don't think it'll be my fantasy skirmish of choice.
>>
>>48911610
Think you could give a brief overview of the rules? As long as its better than Frostgrave, that's all I care about. Do the rules feel vague? Are there routing rules?
>>
>>48905290
Warpath, Deadzone, Infinity, Afterlife, One Page sthsth, Fast&Dirty, 40k, lots of possible areas. Basically any game that needs futuristic soldiers.

>>48905787
It's good. It's not Warhamster, so don't play like it. It's more tactical, but lacks the micromanagement of games where you purchase your models independently. Definitely recommended if you want a truly "mass battles" system.

>>48905888
Nope.

>>48906106
If you want to play Warhammer, then yes. I'm not entirely sure I want to.

>>48906189
>The worst things I've heard is that it is a bit bland and vanilla
It's only as bland and vanilla as you make it to be. Couple of guys in my club write a story about basically every battle we fight, and even tho my dorfs are doing pretty much nothing, it's fun.

>>48909575
>historical book
I hope the writers know their shit, and didn't fuck up with historical accuracy. 30 lists seems a lot, but in actuality, it's not that much.
>>
>>48911653
A brief one...you get heroes, companions (lower-level heroes) and minions/monsters. There's no race differentiation for the first two, but you can fine-tune their stats for your tastes to make that warrior a dwarf, or that paladin an elf. You get 4 good and 4 evil, with the same number of companions. For minions, lots of them. Optionswise, it's a bit limited (you can only arm minions with equipment listed in their profile, so your elf dude can get a bow or get a bow), but you can houserule the shit out of it. There are not much spells, and your wizards can't cast too many in any game.

For activation, you get half the number of your warband's activation tokens, plus both players roll, the winner gets the number of tokens equal to the difference in roll, the loser gets half of it - you can use these tokens to get extra activations, bonus for dice, etc. I don't like that you can't activate all your guys in a turn, but I digress.

Can't remember routing, but overall, I'd definitely recommend it over Frostgrave (which was a bit too magic-centric for me, and the d20 made it too random), but wouldn't be my default fantasy skirmish. No campaign tho. I'll read another one, Rack&Ruin next week, it seems promising with fucktons of spells, races, character generation, skills, perks, etc.

And for good measure, here's Otherworld:

Afterlife is the game of Anvil Industry, we're in the future, megacorporations left and right, Earth is ruined, Unity Council gets shit done, Republic doesn't like it, because too much rules, all-out war in the streets. The figures are great tho.

One Page rules are shortened versions of Warhammer, see their website for free rules.

Fast&Dirty is a squad-based scifi skirmish game, easy, can be played with basically any kind of figures, free from their website.

>>
>>48915759
>And then realizing I have no more space for minis, and no friends who would be interested in buying/painting a completely different scale and system.
Unfortunately, the best option is to pick a scale, system and setting, then build a complete set for it. Two opposing forces, some terrain. Invite other people to play. If they get into it and want to buy in, great!

If not, persuade them (somehow) to do the same for another type of game.

You end up with a bunch of people who can put on games for a bunch of topics, some of which have other people who can support them. Better than nothing or a monoculture.
>>
>>48916468
General post-apoc, not fallout-specific: khurasan may be a dick but he's got a good line of minis.

Rebel Minis have some stuff and are cool.

GZG have _some_ stuff that can be used - they're notable for having 15mm horse-mounted scouts in one of their SF ranges, and they have some aliens that look good as mutants (or orks).

it's alright, the 2nd edition which is much, much improved over the first (though still really in need of some polish on the mechanics and consistency) is free so you can just check it out.

It's certainly got a lot of flavour to it, unlike many skirmish games. But you've probably also got to have appreciate for old british tv to really get into it, and be willing to modify far more than what the game lets you within the system itself.

Tomorrow's War, the sci-fi version of Force on Force.

Either TW or one of the Force on Force supplements actually stats out SG-1 and some Goa'uld soldiers, but it wouldn't be hard to do from scratch either (Quality d12, TL2 SG-1 vs Quality 8 / 10, TL3 enemies).

Counterpoint to TW (because TW is ...not an easy game to get into at all): No Stars In Sight.

Basically as TW is to FoF, NSIS is to No End In Sight. And it's a massively easier to read/use system to boot.

Clash On the Fringe might be better for more character-orientated fightan though. Not too sure.

SodaPop did produce a short-lived Tentacle Bento card game, which involved miniatures of a number of characters. But Soccer Moms complained and now we don't have that.

Of course, there's a Consentacle Card Game in the works currently. It's actually strangely fun and has neat mechanics from what playtesters have said, as well as being pretty sex-positive with themes of mutual satisfaction and consent. It's not currently available, but the designers are still working on several extra aspects that need refinement, and it's super indie so it'll take a while.

You can read more about it yourself if you're interested:

>>48927763
We've tried, but they always die out too fast. Not enough people playing and too many trolls which plague every general that isn't well established.
>>
>>48927763

Same reason a lot of other generals don't have sticking power: lack of playerbase, which translates into poster-base.

Infinity's clawed its way up to a constant general, as has Warmachine. Spartan Games gets a new one for a while each new product line, and then it gets lumped into Spartan Games General. Frostgrave gives Fridays the old college try, Mantic had one going for a while, and every smaller game gets a mention every month or so.
>>
>>48928288
Quest threads fill the board with shit, anything but the top 5 games can't sustain a general, then games like 40k have a general when half the board is their bullshit.
>>
There is a board for quest threads, but they're still posted here?

Why? Why are the mods powerless
>>
>>48928437
>>48928479

This isn't the thread for quests.

But there's no real evidence to suggest that removing quests would generate more interest and influx of people onto /tg/ to revitalize these tiny games. I mean there's more often troll threads that kick threads off page 10, and quests usually stick around while in autosage until they make a replacement. Generals do much the same.

40k and MtG of course get a dozen threads all the time because every format and possible playstyle or specific question needs a different thread (sarcasm).
>>
>>48928598
Less quests means a slower board, means weaker threads can survive longer

Any recommendations for medium-large amounts of cost effective civilians? This is for a display board.

Modern to near futuristic. I've looked at model train stuff, and there are some medieval things out there, but the quality isn't spectacular considering the price, and they are very staticly posed. The ideal would be a bunch of monster-movie extras that are fleeing or otherwise in shock/awe. Any recommendations would make my day.

Have I lost my mind if I write a ruleset for a skirmish in a G rated 40's pinup art western setting? someone explain frostgrave to me
>>
>>48944162
What is there to explain? Game is about wizards leading bands of mooks around a frozen city to loot shit. It's got a fairly basic rules system that doesn't really care about anything that isn't a wizard, and if it can be compared to anything it'd be Mordheim: ultra-lite edition now with more snow.
>>
>>48941871
Well, yeah, but it also needs to fit the flavor. If you got a guy with a fun ability to boost troop morale, and he's called something like 'Tracker', it kills it, no matter how brilliant the ability is.

Its also easier to go "this is what I want it to be, how do I make it like that?" most of the time.
>>
>>48898794
Groovy mini's man
>>
>>48944297
"The squad knows that no heretic can escape the gaze of the Tracker. Once he is locked onto them he will know exactly where they are for the rest of his life or until they die. This makes the troops assigned to a tracker extra zealous in their faith, knowing they are cleansing the Earth of another commie heretic for their great empire".

Tell me again how that kills it?
>>
Anyone here tried Wolsung? Heard good things about it and the minis look pretty sick.

Also hoping to start building some of my Heavy Gear stuff soon.
>>
>>48944556
Because it can change the flavor.

>Mastering the secrets of blood, the Blood Priest transfers the vitality of the slain to allies, mending wounds.

>The Paladin calls upon the Light to sear closed wounds and bolster the efforts of an ally, pushing them further into battle.

>Calling on the elements, an Elementalist uses cold, crisp water to sooth an allies pain and calm their frayed nerves.

3 examples that mechanically could all be "A model heals 1 wound.", but with different flavors, some that appeal more to others. If you want the flavor of a Tracker to be a lone wolf hunting his prey, giving him an ability to boost morale to others takes away from it. Its not so much that you can't make it fit, its that its better to know what you want to achieve first rather than forcing something to fit.
>>
>>48945333

A lame game that shilled itself as a new age Mordheim but the only ones that get any exp are your Wizard and his apprentice (who is literally half your wizard, at all times. So even he's not important). You also only gain the most combat exp from your Wizard doing stuff, but he is also the entire reason for your warband to exist. So you can be wreckless and probably get him killed, which fucks you up for the rest of the campaign, or you can have him sit in the back like a pussy but hardly gain in levels....which also helps you lose more scenarios. Also, no routing rules, so games take forever, especially if you're playing with more than just another person.

Buy the minis, not the game. Maybe even the scenario books, but play Song of Blades and Heroes, or any other fantasy skirmish game for that matter.
>>
so what game systems would you recommend for someone interested in Steampunk wargaming(besides the stuff Spartan publishes for Dystopian Wars that is)?

scale isn't absolute, although I think 10 or 15 mm would be the best choices(I've heard most of the good mini ranges for this sort of thing are in those sizes)

>>
>>48949743
like >>48949777 said, "In Her Majesty's Name" for 15mm.

For 10mm you have Timeline 300 which I bet no one plays, or you can just use pick fluff light rulesets like Kings of War (a league of rhordia iron beast is pretty much identical to any other monster), pick a faction that fits the army composition and rename them.

The minis suck? Sculpt wise I think they're spot on, QC is admittingly a mixed bag.

>>
>>48950227
QC's an issue for most mini companies; you'll always get bad casts from even the best ones.
It's really starting to piss me off; many of them have Infinity, Malifaux and others, but they refuse to play anything but Warmahordes. I'm sick and tired of the WAAC attitude associated with WM/H, so I just don't enjoy playing it, especially with them.

They're really good, I just wished they stick to a style/universe and expand on it, right now we have a couple from the animated series, Nolan's movies, Gotham tv show, Arkham Asylum, etc,

With Marvel minis they mostly stick to the style but then pick weird ass versions of a character, like the "superior spider man" and the new Ms Marvel.
>>
>>48950422
Do you think if you picked up a couple of starter sets and offered to demo they would try it? The game speaks for itself. The Joker starter plus Miller Batman and a cop blister is a decent match up.

>>48950462
Yeah honestly this is a bit of a sticking point for me too. On the one hand its a little jarring seeing the animated aesthetic matched up to the game/ TV/ Movie models but at the same time its cast a wide net and gotten people interested that would've passed if it focused just on one universe.

I myself am a comic fan and haven't played the video games at all. Miller Batman having a model was what got me interested.

The game is only as fun as you make it to be.

Soldier's Companion. It's a standalone expansion to Space: 1889, which is basically red-coated brits on mars. It's VSF - Victorian Science Fiction - rather than Steampunk, kind of a precursor? There are flying ships, using Martian liftwood (which is of course a valuable asset), although the natives' are man-powered or sail, storing energy in a flywheel for when they need to go fast. The British ships are solidly coal-powered, although Soldier's Companion isn't a ship game - they have one of those too, and it's compatible.

IIRC the germans use airships and diesel, but they're not a major part.

It's a neat setting, at least the first edition, and Soldier's Companion is a neat standalone game that works with or without weird tech and aliens. The designers' notes are worth a read: http://www.heliograph.com/space1889/scdesignnotes.html

It's written for 28mm figures, but frankly you can use anything. Adjust ranges if you like, or leave them as they are and enjoy a game where the figure scale is closer to the ground scale. Units are about 20 figures, a redcoat unit against a unit or two of irregulars is a fun game IIRC. Maybe three.

It's pretty readily available in PDF (pirated or cheap) and print (I think there's a POD version available through Amazon). For (sky) ships you want Sky Galleons of Mars/Ironclads & Ether Flyers, available similarly. I think there's even a combined POD of both in one volume on Amazon. They have deckplans for a whole lot of ships, some of which are cool as hell.

There's also a new edition of Space 1889, which is a bit shit (for some reason they retconned it so that the confederacy is a thing now?)
>>
>>48950329
>>48950227

Since it doesn't have the airship game, the main Space 1889 book has some pretty pics of the basic ones , pp74-75. Note that SGoM/I&EF has a whole bunch of setting detail on who has what, complete with the few airships on Earth - liftwood being expensive to transport - and how they differ from the Earth designs on Mars. Also a bunch of the Earth factions on Mars have done their best to buy, beg or steal Martian ships, because it's hard to get them.

I have a bit of a crazy idea, and I just want to know what guys think. I'm thinking of running a RPG based around large scale warfare, and using wargaming to represent the battles.
Is this a good idea or will it just end in battles that take too long?

>How? You are supposed to grab the treasure and GTFO

So you don't attempt to stop your friends from getting their three treasures? You just kind of all agree "I've got a chest, don't touch me plz." You move at half speed, and ballistic henchman can fucking destroy. One of my friends had nothing but archers and would just set up his people to wait for someone to get to a treasure and snipe us until we died, or put enough pressure that we had to leave without hardly any.

The games are only fast if you have minimal or no combat, which would be retarded. And even then, it's not very fast because you have to slowly move all your guys off the side you came from, anyway. If the game actually had routing rules, the matches would be incredibly faster.

Any suggestions for cheap terrain? I'm not much of a craftsman so I'm not very confident in making my own, but I'm willing to try it.
>>
>>48955806
Look up The Terrain Tutor on youtube, he did an entire series on cheap and easy terrain.
>>
>>48955906
does he still post shitty videos where he's talking to his wife and kids? I had to unsub when I got sick of him posting videos of his kids stuff while not uploading any decent content he made.

Terranscapes is great as well. He's top tier craftsman and very autistic but he'll inspire you.

Yeah, but those are mostly his Sunday Live shows which I could never watch due to work anyway. His tutorial vids are good and he got a new workspace recently so his content should be getting better.

I get that people want to show off their kid's stuff and be proud and all that but fuck if it isn't aggravating for us who don't give a damn about children, especially the kids of someone we don't even know IRL, and just want the good content.
I'm a long time viewer of his, even hanging out in the livestreams on occasion (good background for building/painting) but any time the kids turn up I'm out until they're gone. His wife is fine though because even when around she's not obnoxious, attention-whoring and loud in the way children are.

Great tutorials though. Really handy experimental stuff going through materials and how they compare, like that epvc thing. Fully recommended for that.

>>48956458
New workspace has definitely improved the vid quality. Though I do appreciate how completely lacking in fancy production the vids are still, because it's just not needed for the subject matter.
>>
>>48945771
I'm thinking of having 3 levels of "quality" in mooks. You'd have the street gang and civilian level guys, cheap, crappy, and with the most limited gear; professional merc level, the average level; and fully trained soldier and specialist level, best training, gear, and the most expensive.

Would you guys recommend Songs of Blades and Heroes, as a good starting point?

I havent played any battle games yet but I'd really like to try something out with my gf.
We got into painting after buying some Zombiecides and after few videos of Mordheim battle reps with great terrain, she told me she could try to play this kind of games (boardless).
I would put her "in-game mechanics knowledge", of ANY kind, at a level of 10 year old as she was never into fantasy nor vidia.
Is SoBaH a good start? Isn't 2 stats too trivial for this kind of game?

My goal in the future is Mordheim, but it'll take some time to gather proper minis so I'm looking for something with smaller starting step.
>>
>>48945771

I've also thought about making it Necromunda, but each gang gets a giant robot.
>>
>>48958886
I seen blogs with fathers playing it with they sons of six years, so I don't see why not. And it isn't Trivial, you can do pretty much what can you do with Mordheim without all the clutter, it's a pretty lean system, tough some times people abuse special rules.

i wish. however i also wish the game had the option for more generic leaders so that you didn't have to be JOKER fighting BATMAN(or similar IMPORTANT NAMED characters). sometimes you just wanna be a random street gang or paramilitary group that tried to take on people. honestly i think Batman Minis could be cool as fuck without the batman trappings.

Also, has anyone tried the marvel system knight models put out?

>I would put her "in-game mechanics knowledge", of ANY kind, at a level of 10 year old

I'm pretty sure there's a video on youtube of a 10 year old teaching you how to play, so I'd say she's good. Then again, you may just want to push her straight into the deep end of the pool and go straight to Mordheim. Just use random books and bits until you can start making cool terrain. That way there's no transition pains on her, because SoBaH has some really BASIC rules compared to Mordheim.

Well as I said Mordheim will be our goal but the difference between it and Sobah is that the second we can play right away with random minis from random games, while for mordheim I need to complete 2 thematic, nice looking warbands. In sobah I can put an elf, dwarf and necromancer together and call it a proper team, no so hard proxying required.

Good thing she's into creating terrain as well, so even if she's not going to be the greatest player, I've got somebody to help me with creative stuff.

How often does CMoN restock Dark Age stuff in their store? Looked into it due to the thread, and really like the look of CORE, but several things are sold out at the moment.

Do they do a decent job of refreshing stock, or is it a lost cause since it's more of a niche game?
>>
Does CMON have a UK branch? They do a lot of stuff but their main website seems US focused
>>
>>48969164
>While for mordheim I need to complete 2 thematic, nice looking warbands

Dude, I used plastic army men with dry erase dots on their heads to tell who was on who's warband before eventually using 40k Orkz and Space Marines. You don't need the figures, no matter how much GW makes you believe you need to. Just need a way to tell who's what and has what.

>>
>>48970724

>>48970772
I've ordered from them quite a lot.

Generally if everything you ordered is marked as in stock when you order it you won't have any problems.

However if anything is marked as out of stock you could be in for a long wait as their restocks are very unpredictable.

Also they tend to be a bit iffy with preorders, so I'd avoid that if possible.
>>
>>48970864
>However if anything is marked as out of stock you could be in for a long wait as their restocks are very unpredictable.

That can happen everywhere though. There is a reason that items are marked as "in stock" and as "sold out".
>>
>>48970772

>>
>>48970884
There have been instances where items have been 'out of stock' for very long periods of time or even vanished from the store altogether.

I believe in that latter case they will refund you though.

Basically Wayland are reliable if you make certain everything is in stock when you order.
>>
>>48970904
I have a shit load of their sweeties too.. They have great customer service.

That said I also sell stuff on ebay and use Warlord games as a distro. They're fantastic too.

>Basically Wayland are reliable if you make certain everything is in stock when you order.
´
As you should do all the time if you want a certain item fast.

>even vanished from the store altogether.

Thats whats happening for japanese hobby stuff alot of times. The longest wait was like 9 month for a Tamiya King Tiger i ordered when the store had marked it as "restock".

But i can hardly blame them if Tamiya isn't casting new kits, what can they do..
>>
>>48970951
Japan is weird though. They produce a shit load of kits but in a cycle. If it's not within a year you're waiting on a re-cast which they announce a few months ahead of time. Considering they still recast kits from the 80s, it's quite fast of a cycle.
>>
>>48970246
Check some other stores for product, though IIRC they restock somewhat regularly. If you're US based warstore has dark age

>>
>>48970484
I'm not falling for GW meme. And I wasn't saying about 2 complete warbands using GW models. The only time I look at their models is when I'm looking for a cheaper, similar proxy.

But I like aesthetics, while keeping it cheap I want humans represented as humans, el capitano being at least a little bit more heroic than a henchman. Using army soldiers, with paint drop on them, is ok when you only want to play a game at all cost.
I wan't to play keeping the visual atractivnes. That's why I'm going with system that allows me to utilize models that I have now (like sobah).
Mordheim can wait a month or two.
>>
>>48951400

My biggest problem with how spells work (beyond how poorly balanced they are) is that they are pretty difficult to cast.

You can go whole games without casting anything and of course failing to cast stuff by a certain amount means you wound yourself as well.
>>
>>48972446
The d20 basically fucks it up.
>>
>>48972446
>dice are bad in dice games

ok
>>
>>48972477

Yeah, FG basically uses D20's for no other reason than nostalgia and a it fucks up the whole thing.
>>
a 60% cast rate on 2d6 is still equal to a 60% cast rate on 1d20
>>
>>48972483

Where did I say that?
>>
>>48972606
Well, yeah, but it builds up entirely differently. With a d20, to roll a 7, you have a 1:20 chance, with 2d6...I won't calculate it, but from Catan I know it's the most common result on a 2d6, and most results have multiple components (like you can get 7 by rolling a 3 and a 4, 6 and 1, 5 and 2...). Frostgrave with its 20 makes the game MUCH more random than if it would be based on 2d6. If you like it, fine, but eh, it's random enough with 1-2d6.
>>
>>48972847
>I actually don't understand probability

Thank you for proving my point.
>>
>>48972887
As a whole the d20 makes it much more random. There are 20 possible results instead of 12. It's like how "guess which number I'm thinking of between 1 and n" is much easier if n is 10 than if it's 100.

Tho I'm not sure what we're arguing about. A 60% is 60%, doesn't matter what. FG is more random, and thus not as good for many people because of it, including me, after two of my treasure carriers got headshot because my opponent rolled two twenties and I could cast a single spell in the entire game.
>>
2D10 is the most common house rule for the dice system in Frostgrave.

Keeps the same result range basically but it has a bit of a bell curve.
