All Christian factions may add units from their orders to it, this includes Protestants and Orthodox Christians. Contributing to a crusade will break a NAP. The land is divided among the highest contributors, The best valuable going to the highest.
Crusades can only target designated regions. They must have an objective, and cannot spill past it.

The Turks easily deflect the Orthodox invasion, but lose to a surprise attack by the Crusader state in the Holy Land.
The Pope's crusade is a massive success. All of Turkish occupied and owned Europe falls to the Crusaders. The banner of Christendom is hoisted over Constantinople.

The real problem is that 4chan wants to play as the Christians or the Pagans. We need a set starting amount of Muslims. The Islam bonuses are probably the strongest and hardest scaling of any of them. I think Catholics also need to be restricted to the west. If Islam can develop in peace, it will become much more threatening, as it has a lot of bonuses. I also want to make it so people don't automatically ally with their religion. There should be Christian and Catholic infighting.

Crusader states do need to be banned. I'm alright with Christians in Anatolia, or North Africa, but no more holy land Christians.
The major problem with Protestantism, is that it competes with both Catholicism, and Orthodoxy.
Orthodoxy is supposed to be Theodosian walls, and be impossible to take.
Catholicism is expansion and Crusades.
Protestants do what the other to do, but in slightly different ways.
If you could ally outside of your religion, that might help.

It's supposed to be that they want to prevent themselves getting reconquered, thus minor bonuses to holding land.

One Idea I had would be making the Crusade, upon victory, form a Crusader state. The Pope can then allocate the lands out as they please, and can manage them while Pope, but cannot annex them himself. Thus the Pope has to pass the title to a successor if he wants to annex a Crusader state.

Sounds a bit complex DESU. I do suggest the Pope doesn't get crusade bonus to help encourage Crusades being something all Catholic states get involved in rather than something the Pope uses to help expand his personal lands.

Actually, now that I think of it, how about Crusades only give a bonus for every Catholic nation that is actually involved in the Crusade. After all an announcement of a Crusade by the Pope doesn't mean much if the various Catholic nations aren't interested.

Just realized the way it works.
There will be an adopter bonus. The bonus is no longer equal to the number of players. Instead, it's based on how early you adopted the religion. Furthermore, when a member of your religion dies, you get a bonus. So you want to join a less popular nation, and you want to kill the weaker followers off, to increase future bonuses.

These are what I have so far:
Kingdoms: So long as you control 4 or more cities that give you +2, your nation is a kingdom. Kingdoms get +5 to defense.
Religions: When you join the game declare your religion. You gain a bonus for as long as you possess that religion. The bonus is equal to how early you adopted it. 1st +5, 2nd +4 3rd +3. After the third adopter, you no longer get an adopter bonus. Whenever a member of your religion is eliminated gain +4 so long as you belong to that religion. Include the religion in your name, and put the adopter bonus behind it, like so: Name Paganism +2. This would represent a 3rd adopter of Paganism. If another Pagan were killed, the bonus would change to: Name Paganism +4. All bonuses from religions go in the religion category. This includes holy cities. Please track these for OP

The Great Heathen Army gets an additional +2 for each pagan in the game, other pagans may support you from their bonuses at no cost that turn. Reinforced land is treated as 50% more effective when defending against the Great Heathen Army.

Islam: +3 vs unoccupied territory. Muslims gain an additional +1 for each Holy City that they control. EG Mecca normally grants +1 to all followers of the religion that controls it, Muslims get +2 instead. Caliph: If a Muslim controls Mecca and Medina, he may declare himself Caliph. The Caliph gets replaces the +1 from holy cities with +2, thus Mecca would grant the Caliph +3, rather than the usual Muslim +2. The Caliph can declare Jihad against another religion, or designate a Muslim an apostate, and declare Jihad against apostates. While a group is a target of a Jihad, all Muslims get +1 for each follower of that religion, and +1 for each Muslim in the game. Apostates do not get to benefit from Jihad, and do not count towards it. The first time a Caliph declares Jihad, all Muslims gain a permanent +3, this bonus goes in the religion category, and will lost upon conversion. While a Jihad is declared, the +3 vs unoccupied territory is lost.

How about this for a crusader mechanic.
>The pope can declare a crusade and select a target city to capture that can either be accessed by sea or through the territory of a catholic nation. Once created, the crusader state is an NPC that automatically expands evenly in all directions. On the first turn of the crusade, the crusader state takes the full bonus of each catholic player as its roll. On subsequent turns, the map update is used as the roll of the crusader state. The crusader state does not benefit from city and resource bonuses. Holy cities controlled by the crusader state grant their bonus to all Catholic nations. A subsequent crusade can be called only after the first crusader state is eliminated from the game.

I like this mechanic a lot. The one problem is that I'm going for a Pope where people have to think whether or not it is in their interests to support them. You can't outright go after the Pope, but if two guys keep bouncing the Papacy and Crusader states between each other, the other Catholics should get upset. This also makes it very hard to justify crusading the Pagans, who will probably be in the North.
